Chapter 3: Story of my life
Dean follows his brother out of the door. Today is Tuesday, that means that Sam would go and meet with a friend form a different school. They would meet up in the library, maybe followed by a burger or a movie or something else fun. He loves to follow his brother around when he does something else then studying. Dean is proud that his brother is the best in his class, and he likes the time in the library but sometimes it gets boring.
Following his father to his job is very interesting. He had seen him fix up many cars, too many to count. But the more modern cars aren't as interesting as a classic car like the Impala. When his father had one of those cars in the garage Dean would go to work with him, on the other days he is with Sam in school. He likes school in some way. Learning all the different things, seeing the other kids play, sneaking into the teacher's offices when they lock the doors behind them.
Dean found many ways to occupy himself over the years. It took him a while to understand that he isn't growing and even longer that this is not normal. Watching his baby brother grow up and become taller than he is, that shouldn't happen. Dean is the big brother not Sam. But it doesn't change a thing even when he wants to grow up he stays like he is. 4 years old, wearing a pyjama and bare foot. He likes his pyjama but he would like to try on other clothes too. But it´s the same with clothes and everything else, Dean can´t touch a thing.
He can walk on the ground, sit in cars and on chairs, take an elevator to an upper flour but he can´t touch people or pick up things, push or even move a single item. And worst of all no one can see him. Until he met the strange nurse with the stranger name in the scary hospital. Dean doesn't like this hospital, especially the room his father and brother go every week. He always waits outside. He doesn't want to see what´s in there. The last time was different. This man, Cas, could see him, talk to him.
Since that night noting had touched Dean like that. The feeling of being there of existing is like flying. Like that time dad had thrown him into the air and caught him. That moment in the air, when nothing except the wind touches him. It felt like that and Dean wants to feel like it again. He wants to talk to Cas and maybe he can help him talk to his brother and father.
Castiel is filling out papers from his last patient. Documenting everything he did and everything else that is important as he sees the ghost again. Or better, the ghost of Dean Winchester is visiting him in the nurse station. His father and brother are probably here to visit the body of the boy unaware of the soul following them every day.
"Hey Cas." Dean smiles at him, brightly.
"Hello Dean. How are you?" Cas hopes that no one would come in and see him talking to thin air. He doesn't want to be the crazy guy again.
"What are you doing?" Dean walks right through the door and stands next to him. Looking at the document.
"I´m working and that isn't something you should see." Cas shuts the file and hides the patients information from curious eyes.
"Why?"
"Because that are the information about another person and only the stuff is allowed to see them."
"Fine." Dean turns and looks around the office. "Can we play something?"
Castiel wonders what is keeping the boy in this world. He had seen the file and the boy should have died that night. There is no way his body would recover, there is no soul in it. The soul is wandering around like one of the restless ghosts that got surprised by their death. Maybe Dean needs help to move on? "What would you like to play?" Castiel´s ability has to be useful for something.
"Don´t know. There is noting I can touch. Maybe hide and seek?" Cas thinks about it. He could try it.
"We can but when someone else is around us I have to be quiet. Most people react bad when you talk to someone they can´t see." He looks at Dean´s big doe eyes. "Sorry, but I will be the first one to count ok. You go hide." Dean´s smile returns and he runs off as Cas says ONE.
There has to be a way to get Dean move on. As he gets up to walk around the hall to find Dean a thought appears suddenly in his mind. Maybe Dean doesn't move on because he isn't really dead. Maybe he can bring the soul back to his body. Maybe Dean would wake up. On the other hand this body didn't have a soul for 16 years. Would it even be possible to fuse the two parts together again?
Cas has to decide what he is doing next. In reality there are two ways this could go. One Dean wakes up and lives and the other his soul moves and his body dies. Whatever keeps Dean in this form has to be solved. He doesn't want the child´s soul becoming a restless spirit.
