Chapter Three: Food and unease

Walking into the restaurant, I am hit with the aromas of the place. The green tea is a calming smell that makes me happy.

My stomach growls at the smells of the food being prepared and eaten.

"Well, sounds like we need to feed the tiger." I hear Keith joke next to me. With a fake expression of annoyance, he somehow gets lightly pushed away from me by my hips.

Not sure how that happened.

Have I mentioned Keith is the brother I never wanted but somehow needed? Probably not.

One of the workers comes and leads us to a booth near the kitchen. Keith sits with Keiran while Jenna sits with me in the booth. I was sitting across from Keiran and Jenna in front of Keith.

Since I already know what I want, I don't even read the menu. Jenna does the same. Keiran and Keith are looking over the menu, talking to each other, debating what to get for themselves. I take this opportunity to chat with Jenna.

"So, how much notice did you get that this was happening tonight, dear Jen?"

She laughs and smiles. "Honestly, I didn't know it might happen until Keith messaged me he was at the shop and someone was with him. Maybe two minutes."

I laugh because it sounds like something he would do if he did not want to deal with the wrath of his wife.

"Busted! What makes you think Keiran here is someone I had to meet?" I look over at Keiran and his expression almost creeps me out.

He is looking me up and down with a smile that doesn't seem real. Almost demonic.

I glimpse over at Jenna to make it known that I was uncomfortable, and I think she notices. I base that on the face she gives me back, like she was unsure as well.

"Maggie, tell me about yourself and your family? Do you have siblings?" I peer at Keiran, who was trying to make small talk. What a great subject.

Both Jenna and Keith look at me and are afraid of my answer.

"I have a mom, dad, and a younger sister. They live in our family home, about ten minutes from here. We are not close and have not been for years." Keiran nods and I question him. "What about you? What do you do? When did you meet each other?"

"I work for the FBI, mainly with arsonists. I started with them about six months after I got out of the Navy. I love what I do, bringing arsonists to justice."

I try to smile at Keiran. "That sounds like a rewarding job. How did you meet Keith and do you live around here?" I ask, kind of hoping that he is just visiting.

"I have known Keith here since basic training. We were stationed together a lot and served a few tours together. Classified, of course." He looks at Keith and they give each other a handshake of some kind.

"Keith, you never told me you were in the Navy. Jenna, you never told me either! How rude!" Jenna laughs at me and I roll my eyes.

"It's not my story to tell, Mags. Honestly." Jenna looks at her husband and gives him a loving smile. "Plus, I don't know much about his time in the service other than it counts towards his retirement with the Police Station. Smart move for him, since he was in for nearly ten years from what the man tells me." Jenna looks at Keith with pride.

"It was a good ride and I could have retired from the Navy after I met my Jenna and you in Pensacola, Florida that 'Spring Break' you both took. It's the best vacation that I ever took in my life, I might add. I wanted to be with her all the time. I did not want Jenna to worry about deployments or worry for my safety. The easiest decision I ever made was to marry this gift, A.S.A.P. We both knew it was love when we met. Thankfully, Florida has that no waiting for non-residents law, so we got our license, and the next day you and Jenna got your dresses and I got a nice pair of khakis and a white button-down. I found one of the base chaplains and a friend and married at sunset on the beach. One of the best days of my life."

I smile as I remember that day. "Yeah, your friend hoped that we would have the same luck, but it didn't work out. Unfortunately for him. What was his name? Sebastian?" I ask.

"Close, we called him Flounder. Because he was in the Navy and somehow was not a graceful swimmer. Quite sad actually." Keith says with a laugh.

"That man is an idiot! Nearly got us killed on whatever boat they trained us on! Good thing that he ended up in NCIS. He would have never fared well on a ship." Keiran mutters.

"I would never make a good sea lass. NEVER," Jenna says with a laugh. "Hell, this one would be worse. She can swim and all, but not that well."

I think that all three of us remembered when I nearly got taken out to the Gulf of Mexico by a wicked rip tide.

"Well, the rip tides there can be intense. Some of the most dangerous in the world, depending on where," Keith said solemnly.

"I can imagine. I am grateful for your quick work in saving my ass from myself. My hero." I sing, making Keith snort his beer.

"I swear, I am not sure that I like that you talk with Keith how you do. Jenna, how can you stand it?" Keiran asks.

"Honestly, they fight like siblings most of the time. The closest to naked he's seen her is when she went to the hospital after that near-drowning. Mags would never be a part of an affair." Jenna is pissed. "If our food wasn't already nearly here, I would think that this outing is over."

As she speaks, I notice our server brings our many plates filled with food. I was so excited to see the food, but almost not wanting to eat anything.

Something was not right with Keiran.

I just hope that it does not come back and haunt me.
