Sonny headed to the lead mines for his second day, he arrived and saw some trucks full of lead. "Hello Sonny." The manager said as he walked up to the Haydock Foundry Well-Tank, "We got some trucks that need to be taken to Brendam. Would you be able to take a long and heavy load?" "Yes gov'nor." Sonny replied with a smile on his face. He was coupled up to the line of trucks and headed off. Sonny puffed down the line and he began to sing a poem.
"Oranges and lemons,
Says the bells of St. Clement's.
You owe me five farthings
Say the bells of St. Martin's."
Sonny puffed into Wellsworth where he ran into Edward. "Ello gov'nor." Sonny said, "Is this the way to Brendam?" "Oh yes." Edward replied, "You must be this 'Sonny' Percy told me about. I heard you accidently took his train by accident on your first day. But don't worry, everyone makes mistakes." "Thanks." Sonny finished as he continued his way, he went over the points and headed down the Brendam branch. The Brendam branch had some steep hills, so certain engines had do struggle when going up and down the line with heavy loads. Sonny approached one hill outside Suddery, he trundled along up.
"Oh my." Came a voice, it was BoCo who was coming the same way, "Can you handle that many trucks? You might need a banker." "No thanks gov'nor." Sonny replied, I have a special piston valve that can make pull heavy trucks up steep inclines. I've done this many times before back in my days at the coal mines near London." BoCo watched on as Sonny reached the peak of the hill and went down it. "My." The diesel said, "An engine with a special piston valve. He also seems to be quite a nice and hard-working engine."
Sonny arrived at Brendam station and headed for the docks, the lead was unloaded and was informed of a shipment of some mining supplies that need to be taken to the lead mines. "I'll take em gov'nor." Sonny replied gleefully. "Well these trucks are heavy, so you'll probably need a banker to help you up some of the hills." A dock worker said, "We'll get BoCo to help you when you get there." Sonny was coupled up to the trucks and headed up the branch line again. He approached the steep incline again. He puffed and pulled, but some of the trucks were too heavy. BoCo then came up behind Sonny. "Hello." He said, "Are you there, coal mine engine?" Sonny replied with a peep of his whistle.
BoCo approached the break van and pushed hard, Sonny pulled the heavy load of supplies, his driver and fireman checked his gauge and changed his piston valve to release more steam. "I'm doin' it. I'm doin' it." Sonny pronounced as he came closer and closer to the peak, BoCo continued to push until he heard a splutter, "Oh no." He said, "Not now." The force of the heavy trucks was making BoCo's engine strain, then it happened. BoCo's vents were emitting black smoke and he stalled at the hill. Sonny noticed the green diesel staying behind, this made the cockney engine concerned. He went over the hill and stopped at Wellsworth.
"Hello Sonny." Edward said. Before he could say anything else, Sonny butted in, "You takes these supplies to the lead mine gov'nor, my banker has stalled at the hill. If the manager tells where I am, inform him that I'm heading to the works to help an engine." Edward was surprised. Sonny was uncoupled from his train and headed back to the incline, BoCo waited until he heard a whistle. The navy blue engine was coupled to the diesel and they headed off to the works. Since Sonny never knew where the works were, BoCo had to assist him guiding him.
That night, The Fat Controller came to see Sonny. "Sonny, I heard that you abandoned your duties." Sonny looked down at his buffers "I know that, and I'm sorry gov'nor, I mean sir." "I know you are sorry." The Fat Controller continued, "But I was told by BoCo's driver that you helped him get to the works when his engine stalled at the Suddery Incline. That is something to be proud of. As a reward, you will be given new paint." Sonny gleamed from buffer to buffer, "Oh thank you sir." The next day, Sonny was sent to the works to be given new paint, while he picked the same colour he was, he was given the letters NWR on his coal bunker. When he passed through Wellsworth, BoCo came by and thanked him for sending him to the works. "No worries gov'nor" Sonny said as he puffed towards the Toryreck lead mines.
