Chapter 3: It's a 'date'

Bree's POV

Is it weird if I thought about this as if it was a date? Can I call it that? Screw it, it's a date to me! Maybe I like him. I don't think he would like me, to be honest, I don't even know if he likes any girl. I bet he's just always thinking about schoolwork. He seems pretty close to me recently. Maybe because he just sees me as a friend… well we wouldn't have linked arms if he just saw me as a friend… okay maybe I was the one who linked our arms but that doesn't matter; he would've broken it by now.

"So have you thought about what ice cream you're getting?" Chase said. That's a great question he's just asked me though. I haven't actually thought. I know! I'll get a sundae to share and share with Chase! It makes it sort of like a date then. Damn, I never thought I'd be the one slowly falling for Chase, I thought he'd be the one that would fall for me. Or, maybe neither of us falling for each other was more likely to me. I'm going off-topic! I know he's got a sweet tooth, even if he only goes on about healthy foods all the time, and he especially has a sweet tooth for chocolate. So I think I'll a half chocolate one, with something that I like on the other side.

"Oh I've got a good idea," I chuckle, knowing what I'll get and how I'll surprise him. He looks at me and just smiles.

"Bree," he starts, "I like spending time with you. And I just wanted to say sorry again for ruining your test. So because of those two things, I was wondering if I… could buy you a bit more than just a sundae to say sorry?"

Wow, I never thought awkward little Chasey would manage to get over his little trouble with girls to ask me out on a sort of date. Well, I'd say it's definitely a date if he's taking me out to more than just a sundae.

Chase's POV

Excellent! Part six of this seventeen part plan has successfully been executed, and I have managed to secure Bree for an extended period of time beyond the ice cream parlour. Maybe I'll take her to the mall and buy her something? Or to the movies and we can watch the new Pig Zombie. Wait, she hates that genre. Maybe another movie? I know she loves those romantic comedies but I suppose that would be a bit weird if I take her to that. Maybe she'd catch onto something? I would not like that.

"What did you wanna do after?" Bree asked.

"I can't spoil that can I lover girl?" I teased. 'Lover girl' was a favourite nickname for me for her. She proceeded to blush when I named her that. Clearly, I chose the correct name for her there.

"Shut up and tell me Mr. Know It All! I have a right to know!" she said back, punching my arm gently. I would assume this would be the beginning of part seven to my genius and perfect plan; commence flirting between the two of us.

"Look at you and me," she laughed. It is incorrect grammar, but I do not care. The main thing I was focused on was that she said you and me; it was as if to her we were an item. I feel that I'm maybe overthinking this. I completely blowing things out of the water. However, I will continue to do so, because I enjoy the concept of working hard to get what I want. If I succeed, it's another boost to my recently flailing self-esteem. So we've begun the seventh step of this plan.

"It's amazing, isn't it? I feel we've gotten closer and it means a lot to me to have you around. I don't often get to talk to cute girls," I said. Wait, I said she was cute. That was not something I meant to say. This will make things incredibly awkward. Hold on; I assumed she would stop walking and go "Ewwww" and tell me to go away and mock me for this, but she's giggling? This must mean something.

"Well I don't often talk to adorable little guys like you, even if you are the most awkward and arrogant guy I know," she said. "I may not say this ever but you're one of the most important people to me. You've saved my life so many times and always been the best of friends to me."

Bree's POV

As soon as I said that, he just went quiet. Did I make him feel awkward or something? I hope not...

"Chase, are you okay?" I asked.

"Yeah it's just… not many people say nice things to me at all, and even then it's never anywhere near as nice as that," he replied. He stopped and looked at me. "Thank you so much, Bree. That meant so much to me. Just like you do." He pulled me into a tight hug. Wow. For all the mocking we do, he is so strong. I've noticed he's been working on his body recently. Well, ever since we've found out we aren't siblings. You know, he does look really good. Like, super good.

We get to the ice cream parlour a few minutes before Chase thought we would. Bet he must feel a bit ordinary about making a human error. Maybe he won't look into it.

"Hello and welcome, what can I get you?" the cashier asks

"Please be kind to my wallet Speedy," he begs.

I chuckle and slap his arm and say, "Could I get a large sundae, but half vanilla and half chocolate?" Chase looks clearly confused, so I say, "with two spoons please!"
He smiles. I think now he knows we're sharing the sundae and he seems happy with that. We find a nice two-seater table where we plant down and relax. And finally, the sundae arrives. And it is ENORMOUS.

"Woah! I didn't think it would be this big! It's a good thing I got two spoons," I say. He giggles a little.

"Yeah, I don't know why you need two though," he said.

"So you can help me, silly. For the smartest guy in the world, you sure don't logic around girls do you?" I tease. His face lights up when he realises the chocolate side is for him. Whilst we tucked into it, we casually talk about things we want to do later in life. It's amazing we spent so long in the lab together and yet we barely know about things we want to do when we grow up and move out of the Davenport household.

Chase's POV

"I love how we're so much closer since the whole situation where we found out we're not related. It's just really nice talking to you more," I begin. "I've never been this close to anyone, as a friend or anyone in general. You've always been so good to me when it matters."

"I feel the same, Chase. It's hard to believe but you're probably the closest guy to me. Weird, considering you're my best friend and I'm clearly a hit with the guys," she laughs. I laugh a bit back to her, but I zone in on the fact she called me "best friend" instead of brother makes me feel maybe I have a chance with her if she sees me as a friend more than a brother. Talking to her brightens my mood instantly. Since that dream I had this morning, my emotions and feelings about her have been extremely up and down, but I think my decision is final; I am falling in love with Bree Davenport. There is something I'd never thought I'd say. I think maybe I should say something. This has been tearing me up for the whole day.

"Bree, there's something I wanted to tell you," I began.

She puts down her spoon and looks over at me and smiles. "What was it?"

"I think I-"
I was abruptly cut out by a loud BANG. An extremely large shockwave blast shattered the windows of the ice cream parlour and the structure of the building began to collapse. As people ran out of the rapidly collapsing building, which we were going to attempt to hold together until emergency services arrived, a maniacal laugh was detected by my bionic hearing, and it was gradually getting louder.
And of course, oh, of course, it had to be him.
