Chapter 3
Olivia let out a deep breath as she exited the O.R. She leaned against the wall next to the door and slid down as she slipped off her scrub cap. Her feet were sore and she was in desperate need of something to eat. You'd think that doctors got used to long hours in surgery but it was tiring every single time. Relief washed over her knowing her shift had ended, she would do some post-op checks and then go home.
"Are you okay there?" Doctor Gonzales, Enzo Gonzales asked her as he walked out of the O.R opposite hers.
"Yeah, thanks. Just a long day and had to sit down a moment." She smiled at her friend appreciatively.
"Ah, yes. I know how you feel." He extended his arm with a warm smile. She took his hand gracefully and he helped her up to standing. "Want to go for a drink?"
"Oh, I appreciate the offer, but I have a date with my bed tonight." Olivia laughed as she walked beside him.
"Come on now! You actually have a day off tomorrow, how can you not want to celebrate that with a hangover?" He joined her laughter, nudging her with his elbow.
"You are such a bad influence." Olivia shook her head playfully.
"No, I am the best influence."
Her green eyes gleamed up at him playfully. "Really?" They reached the attendings lounge and she immediately opened the fridge, remembering the pasta salad she had put in it for her lunch break, which due to surgery she never got. Diving in, she took a big bite and closed her eyes in bliss.
"Attractive." Enzo snorted as he grabbed his bag. "I'm heading out. If you change your mind about drinks, you know where to find me."

Spencer sat up in his bed, staring blankly at his phone. It had been hours since the team had left and he hadn't heard a thing since. Somehow, he had anticipated them to call, ask him questions and raid his brain. Frowning, he put his phone on the bedside table beside him and looked out of the window. It was dark out, but he could not switch off. He picked up the kindle Garcia had given him and started to scroll through the many options of books.
His eyes snapped to the door when it opened, his lips stretching into a polite smile.
"Doctor Reid!" Olivia exclaimed as she entered with a smile.
"Doctor Boswell." He greeted back, watching her as she happily approached him. She glanced at the monitor briefly before smiling down at him once more.
"How are you feeling?" She asked him gently.
"I am alright." He answered, then pressing his lips together in a thin line and looking back at his kindle.
Olivia nodded, smiling somewhat awkwardly. Some patients were easier to talk to than others and she would not force a conversation. She knew if there had been any abnormalities Doctor Howards would have notified her. Her eyes fell onto the bunch of flowers on his bedside table.
"Oh, would you look at that! You really do have a lovely work team." Spencer's eyes followed hers.
"Oh!" He straightened up and opened his mouth once more, but no words came out. His eyes fell back onto Olivia and he forced a smile. She raised her eyebrows in return, confused by his reaction.
"They, uh. They are actually not for me." He explained. The confusion on Olivia's face only grew, prompting him to carry on.
"I had someone get them, for you. For saving my life." He concluded. He sat up in his seat and reached for them before handing them to her. "Thank you."
Olivia's lips twitched into a wide smile as she accepted the flowers.
"I, wow, I did not expect this." She blurted out as her eyes looked at the many different flowers. She looked back at Spencer, her beaming smile never leaving her face. "I only did my job."
"Whether it is your job or not, you saved my life." He insisted.
"Well, thank you. It's very thoughtful Doctor Reid."
"You're welcome." He said quietly as he looked back at his kindle. Silence filled the room and he tapped the kindle.
"You read a lot?" Olivia asked as she inspected the device in front of him.
"Yes. In fact, it helps a lot with my work." He replied, his face somewhat impassive.
"How so?" Olivia moved and sat in the chair by the side of his bed, intrigued by the profiler.
He looked at her, his eyes wide for a short moment before regaining his composure. He was not used to women showing an interest.
"Well, see, I have an eidetic memory, which means I can gather and remember extraordinary detail in information." He replied, his hands waving around as he explained himself. She found it very endearing and leaned in a tad closer to listen.
"So, basically, you are a genius?"
"If I was, I wouldn't be here." Spencer's handsome face grimaced, his eyebrows furrowing in a frown.
Olivia's smile also turned into a frown. "I don't know what happened, but it wasn't your fault."
"I wasn't prepared enough. Got jumped by the unsub we were trying to find and locked in a freezer by him, just like his previous victims had been." He ranted, angry at himself.
"Unsub?" She questioned, tilting her head to the side.
"Unknown subject."
"So the Ice Queen maker is the person who attacked you." It was more of a statement than a question.
"Occupational hazard, I guess. You know about him?" He asked as his head turned, hazel eyes looking at her intently.
"I mean, it's all over the news." She said nonchalantly.
"Of course." Spencer laughed lightly at himself, rolling his eyes at himself. So much for being a genius. A blush crept up his neck, embarrassed by his silly question. "Anyway, I don't mean to bore you and I am sure you have somewhere important to be."
"You're not boring me at all, Doctor Reid." She answered honestly, a bit taken aback by her own response. There was something about this man, it made her curious.
"You can call me Spencer."
"Well then, I am Olivia." She smiled and he returned it, for the first time since he had been there, a full smile.
"Do you play chess?" He asked randomly as he eyed up his go bag. He knew JJ had gone by his apartment to pack his chess board.
"Um, no. Well, I never have." She replied as her eyes followed his.
"What, never?!" He responded, his expression adorably shocked. "Want me to teach you?" Excitement bubbled up within him as he was intent sharing one of his interests. He got up out of bed and grabbed the board game from his bag and started to set it up.
"Wait, let me set it up. Teach me." She pulled the chair in close to his bed where he began setting up the game. He smiled at her suggestion, showing her how to set up the board.
They began to play chess, Spencer patiently explaining the game to her. It wasn't until the sun rose early the next morning that they realised how long they had spoken and played chess for.
