Okay, let's get one thing straight: Blinky is his best friend. Yes, he just admitted that. No, he's not too fond of telling people of the fact. And he's not too fond of the fact that the red ghost now knows about his past life.
He didn't mean on telling him. Not exactly, anyways. He did intend on telling the red ghost, and everyone else, just not so soon. And not how it went down. Definitely not how it went down.
They'd been chatting about some part of Blinky's past. He had no idea how they'd ventured on to that topic, but he went along with it. The red ghost offhandedly mentioned how he'd be beaten up by some of the local bullies basically everyday after school, to which he replied with, "Just like my father does to me." He'd never forget the look of horror on the red ghost's face. Ever.
Alright, so he slipped up. Big fat hairy deal. It's not like he did it in front of one of the only people he actually tried his hardest around. Yeah, that totally did not happen. Not at all. Definitely not. Absolutely not. Nope. Nay. Negatory. Nix.
. . . .
Okay, alright, fine. Yes, he was lying. Yes, he actually told Blinky. Yes, he really tried his best around his closest friends. Yes, it was really embarrassing. Yes, he wanted to dig a 10 ft hole into the ground and die. Yes, he was close to tears. Yes, he was kind-of-maybe crying in front of Blinky. No, he was not too happy. At all.
He could run and hide. Thing is, Blinky could probably stop him before he got too far, so what's the point of trying? Although, maybe, he could catch the red ghost off guard and quickly disappear. That might work. Or not. Hey, it's not like he could read the future or anything.
Blinky was staring at him. He didn't like it. He didn't like it at all. It felt too judgemental and too suffocation and too pitiful. It was too harsh and too blank and too suffocating to look at, so he turned his head and stared at the line of trees in front of them, rays of sunlight streaming into and stinging his eyes.
"Inky?"
He winced. He didn't like that tone of voice. It sounded too croaky, too pitiful. It sounded like he was trying not to cry but was failing miserably. He still didn't turn around. He was still staring determinedly at the trees, at the sun, at the horizon, whatever wasn't Blinky's gaze.
Maybe if he pretended to not have heard Blinky, he'll drop it.
No such luck.
"I'm so sorry."
That got him to turn around. It was a very rare case in which the red ghost would apologize. And why was he apologizing for something that wasn't his fault? "What?" He kind of wheezed it out a bit, trying not to laugh. "Why are you apologizing?"
Blinky glanced down for a few seconds, before mumbling, "You shouldn't have had to go through that."
He snorted. "I know that. Tell that to my father. He's the one who needs to get that through his thick head."
Blinky sort of laughed at that. It sounded a bit forced, though. But it also didn't at the same time, if that made any sense. A half not-forced laugh was better than a full-forced laugh. Right? Right.
He started laughing. Actually, it started more as a kind of a strangled chuckle, before he was doubled over wheezing and coughing. His lungs were burning and he couldn't breathe.
He couldn't help it. It was like when you were crying and you keep telling yourself to stop, but no matter what you do, the tears keep coming. It was like that, except he couldn't stop laughing.
Blinky was staring at him again. This time it was with an expression of disbelief.
"Why are you laughing?" he asked, a smile threatening to leak onto his face.
He didn't answer. He just sort of wheezed at him. And then Blinky started laughing. And soon they were both doubling over, laughing and crying their hearts out. It felt good. Like when you finally let yourself cry after a long, hard day. It felt strangely refreshing.
"Why are we laughing?" Blinky wheezed through each laugh.
"I don't know!" Inky cackled madly. "I don't know!"
He knew that if anyone were to come around the corner, they'd either be freaked or weirded out. Either way, they'd still run away. So it didn't really matter.
It felt good. It was nice to be able to laugh. It felt good to have a reason to actually laugh, even if the reason was stupid and unknown. Even if this might be the last time he'd ever laugh for a while.
They stayed like that. For how long, the blue ghost would never know. It felt like hours, or maybe an eternity, to him.
Anyways, afterwards, they started to wind down. Just enough for them to catch their breath.
"Alright," Blinky said, his words sort of breathless and heaving, "why didn't you tell anyone?"
Inky choked down another laugh. He knew he'd had to answer the 'Question'. That didn't mean he had to look forward to it.
He sighed. "I was going to tell you. Eventually. I was just waiting for the right time. But the longer I waited, less opportunities popped up."
Blinky nodded, looking as if he understood. Maybe he did. Maybe he was harboring a terrible secret of his past and was waiting for the best moment to spring it upon everyone. Or not. Maybe he was just trying to make Inkky feel better. It was kind of working, but failing at the same time.
They sat in silence. The kind of silence when you were talking to a close friend and ran out of things to say. Not very awkward, but not exactly comfortable, either.
"Thanks for telling me this."
Inky half-cough half-chuckled. "Intentionally unintended," he said wryly.
The red ghost laughed again. And soon, so did the blue ghost. It was a stupid reason to laugh, but they couldn't help it. They couldn't help it as much as Pac couldn't help being the only yellow one.
So let's get one thing straight: Blinky is his best friend. Yes, he just admitted that. No, he wasn't afraid to admit it. Not to himself, anyways.
Inky could tell him anything. Well, maybe just the bigger secrets. You've got to keep some things to yourself, otherwise, there'd be no point in letting anyone get to know you.
Blinky is his best friend. Today he was the day that he had proved it.
