Lin had barely been keeping her head above water since she started her new job. It wasn't that the work was much harder or more than she had done in LA but it was a new city, new people and a new system to learn. She hadn't spoken with Tenzin other than a few texts they had exchanged over the week. She knew he had the kids who were being a handful as usual according to him. They really needed to talk. They had both chickened out of doing before she started her new job. She was so confused on how they had ended up here in the first place, just like she had been 15 years ago when it fell apart. Both had been a whirlwind to her, she knew that.
Pema's picking kids up at 5 on friday if you want to come over- Tenzin
Sure see you then- Lin
-20 something years ago
Tenzin was hanging out with Lin and his older sibling why he didn't know because that always ended with him being the butt of every joke. He had been picked on by his sibling his whole life. His brother was one of the cool kids, he was funny and bigger than Tenzin and more athletic. Kya was popular, she always had plenty of friends and was invited everywhere. He was just a tall nerdy asian kid. Today was no exception, there was never any exception.
"Well the way Tenzin's going he's going to be 30 by the time he gets his first girlfriend." Bumi ribbed him. Kya and Lin both laughed.
"I can get a girlfriend if I want." tenzin shot back.
"That involves talking to a girl other than Lin." Kya pointed out as Bumi snickered at him.
"I can! I just haven't." He snapped at Kya.
"Well, what's holding you back?" Lin drawled unhelpfully. Tenzin glared at all of them now, unable to give them a good answer.
"Don't worry, Tenny. You just have to get rich and be okay with some chick cheating on you during the week." Bumi continued to tease him. Kya and Lin both cracked up at that. "Don't worry lil brother, I'll be your wingman." Bumi told him. Tenzin thought that might not be a good idea.
"You?! Please, you've never had a relationship last past the second date." Kya shot back.
"Well I don't see you offering any help." Bumi snarked back at his little sister.
"Neither of you are any help." Lin said coolly.
"Yes!" Tenzin agreed.
"I'll set him up with one of my friends." Lin said.
"Wait what?" Tenzin said surprised.
"Well Lil bro?" Bumi asked him.
"Um, sure that would be great." Was all he could say now.
"Hey" she says as she steps through the door.
"Hey" he returned before kissing her as closed the door. "Did you eat?" He asked as they walked into the town house.
"Nope." Lin said sitting down at the counter.
"Well, I can offer you dinosaur chicken nuggets or spaghetti." Tenzin said
Lin laughed. "Fancy tonight. Spaghetti's fine." They chatted lightly for a little while over dinner as Lin worked up to actually talking to Tenzin about what was on her mind.
"Are you okay with this?" She finally said gesturing in between them. Still this didn't know what to call them dating didn't seem right and given their history nothing else seemed right. She really wasn't sure about dating in general right now never mind him.
"Yes of course. What do you mean?" Tenzin asked, giving her a slightly confused look.
"What are we doing, Tenzin?" Lin asked.
Tenzin looked at her carefully. "What are you getting at because I doubt eating dinner is the right answer." he said.
"No it's not. What are we doing with this? Don't play dumb." Lin told him, narrowing her eyes at him playing for time.
"We're reconnecting, seeing where this goes Lin." Tenzin replied seriously.
"Ten, we said causal this is not causal, it wasn't causal last week." Lin argued.
"I like you, Lin." Tenzin told her, slightly irritated, she could tell. "We're seeing how it goes. It's not like I've ever slept around and certainly not now." Tenzin said to her.
"You know exactly what I mean Tenzin." Lin said coolly. He looked away and she was glad. They both were well aware of what she was getting at and didn't want to deal with that even if they should have sorted out the skeletons in their closet before ever jumping back into this relationship.
"Do you want to end it?" he asked quietly.
"What? No it just…" She didn't know what to say, didn't know how to explain or sooth her hesitations.
"Causal right? no expectation, Lin. I don't have any." Tenzin said to her. "Do you?"
Lin really really wished he hadn't turned that question on her. "No I just want to be sure this isn't something it's not." She said.
-20 year ago 2 weeks later
"Owe Lin!" Tenzin yelped as Lin smacked his head with a rolled up piece of paper. He had been peacefully minding his own business when his best friend attacked him.
"This is what I get for setting you up with my friend! How could you fuck it up! Ten, you said you liked her and you have been whining about not having a girlfriend for weeks!" Lin yelled at him. Tenzin covered his head and tried to duck out of her reach. He winced, yeah he knew what this was about and he probably deserved it.
"I didn't mean to- Owe!" Tenzin tried to explain as she got his arm.
"Really? Then why did you ruin it! Blowing her off! its not fucking rocket science, Tenzin." Lin ranted. "One of my best friends!" Tenzin just tried to block her blow. It wasn't that he could tell her the real reason he had blown off her friend Leilah was because he knew he didn't like her and he actually liked Lin. No that was definitely not something he was ready to tell Lin yet. So he let her hit him once more before she finally relented to his 'I'm sorry's.
Tenzin really really had hoped Kya hadn't heard about his break up and he really really had hoped that his sibling would have something better to think about than annoying him about his life. That was never the case and there was never any exceptions.
"How's your girlfriend?" Bumi asked, popping down on the coach near him and stuffed chips into his mouth and chewing obnoxiously.
Tenzin didn't look up from the book he was reading. Kya however chimed in from the other end of the coach. "He broke up with her." Tenzin did look up this time to glare at his sister.
Bumi let out a low whistle. "Wow little brother and just two weeks ago me and Beifong were helping you get that girl too." Then he sat up and knocked the book out of his hand. "Wait a minute what did you do to Beifong's friend to get her to dump you in a week?" Bumi asked. Tenzin didn't respond only glared at him.
"Oh no no no, Bumi, She didn't break up with him. He dumped her." Kya said oh so helpfully.
"Ooo, What?" Bumi exclaimed. "Okay little brother spill I need details."
"It's none of your business Bumi." Tenzin grumbled leaving the room.
"Fine be like that." Bumi called after him.
Tenzin was lying on his bed reading when Kya entered later. "Hey, are you okay though?" She asked. His siblings always gave him a hard time but both were occasionally kind or even protective of him.
"Yeah I'm fine like you said I ended it." Tenzin muttered to her not looking up from his book.
Kya stepped further into the room closing the door. "But why though Tenzin? It sounded like you liked her."
"I don't think I do. I didn't." Tenzin said he had stopped reading but still refused to look up at his older sister.
"Well why didn't you just tell Lin. She would have understood and probably not have gotten mad at you." Kya pointed out.
Tenzin was silent; he didn't know what to tell her and the truth seemed too embarrassing. "I didn't know what to say to get out of it." he said eventually technically it was the truth.
"You could have just told her who you like honestly I thought she already knew that and that was why she set you up with her friend." Kya said, then it clicked in her head and once again his book was knocked out of his hand. "Wait you don't have a crush on her do you? You do!" she squealed.
"Shut up Kya." Tenzin scowled at her.
"You didn't deny it." Kya said, almost gloating at guessing right. "What's wrong? You know she's hot right?"
"Can we just forget about this?" Tenzin muttered.
"No Tenizn! You should tell her I think you guys would be cute together and it's not like you aren't almost dating anyway." Kya pointed out.
"What if she doesn't like me?" Tenzin said softly.
"That's what you're worried about Tenzin this is Lin she's been your best friend since you were five!"
"Exactly I don't want to, you know screw it up." Tenzin told her. It scared him the idea of ruining their friendship for the off chance she liked him back.
"Well you're better than that kid David she was kinda dating a few months ago." Kya said. Tenzin nodded agreeing with her David hadn't lasted long mainly because the dude's ego couldn't be quantified. "Look, trust me, tell her I think you might be surprised." Kya told him.
Tenzin knew damn well what she had been asking and getting at over dinner. But he didn't think rehashing their history would be helpful. He had moved on so had she. He looked at this like a new page; they weren't the same people or in the same place they had been 15 years ago when they broke up. That being said he was nervous over how this was going to but it also felt like they were on a ride and couldn't get off it. They hadn't parted on bad terms by the end they both had seen the end to go their separate ways but that didn't mean that they didn't have unresolved issues that he prayed wouldn't come up on. He knew Lin was probably right about whatever they were doing, they should probably actually deal with and define what they wanted and were doing now. But he felt like a boulder careening down hill picking up more and more speed each time he saw her again. It worried him as he, like her, had thought about the possible problems about it during the week but the thing is that his mind went blank of all of those as soon as she had walked through the door tonight. He was happy talking with her, he was interested in almost everything she said. He enjoyed spending time with her again too much to care about all of those logical problems he had thought about during the week. He was happy talking with her, he was interested in almost everything she said.
It wasn't until those logical problems reared their ugly head in the middle of the following week that it hit him like a ton of bricks that he was quickly falling back in love with her if he hadn't already.
-20 something years ago
"Can I tell you something?" Tenzin said one night to her as they walked back towards Lin's house. Tenzin had adamant that he wasn't going to say anything but Kya's words were playing in his head non stop. He finally thought he worked up enough courage to actually tell her.
He could hear his heart pounding in his ears as she said. "Yeah," Lin said easily.
"You have to promise to not stop talking to me or anything. If this is wrong or anything cause I don't want you to stop being my friend or anything." Tenzin rambled.
Lin stopped walking and looked at him weird. "What are you talking about Ten?" She asked, confused.
"I like you." He said in a rush
"Really?" Lin asked, he could hear the surprise in her voice. He was studying his feet when her hand slipped into his. "I like you too, have for a little while now actually." She said equally as awkwardly as he had but it didn't matter. That made his heart soar.
