Judy had been waiting out in the lobby, for the past 10 minutes. Nick still hadn't shown up for work today, nor had he called. She thought about calling him...
No.
She did call him.
The suspense was intensified with each ring of her phone. She waited and waited, but no answer. The call went to Nick's voicemail.
"Hey, you've reached Nicholas Wilde. I'll call you back later if I want to. Bye!"
In the past few months that Nick had worked at the ZPD, he had never missed a day of work. It made her worried, especially since he hasn't been feeling all that great yesterday.
Thinking of what she should do, she started pacing back and forth. Judy was almost positive that the chief would ask where he was. With that, it was a possibility that she could convince-
Her phone rang.
Judy was quick to hold up her phone to see who the caller was. Much to her dismay, it wasn't Nick. It was a random number that had been trying to call her ever since yesterday evening. Hesitantly, she finally decided to answer the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hello. Is this Judy Hopps?"
"Yes?"
"Last night we had Nicholas Wilde admitted into the hospital. Are you associated with him?"
Judy's heart began to race. Nick had been admitted into the hospital? When? For how long? Oh god, why hadn't she answered this phone call sooner?!
"I-I'm h-his-"
Deep breath, Judy.
"I'm his friend and his partner at the ZPD."
"Well, Judy, since you are one of his emergency contacts, I have to notify you with what has happened. Last night, we received an emergency call that he had been unresponsive. Once we got him here, we did a multiple tests on him, one of the first being a blood glucose test. Do you know what that is, Judy?"
"N-No." Judy's voice was shaky.
"Well, it's a test that can see how much sugar is in someone's blood. The average blood sugar can be anywhere from 70 to 100. Last night when Nick came in, it was in the low 20s, which is very bad."
Judy's eyes widened.
"I-Is he okay?!"
"Yes, dear, right now he's resting. But, we had to give him a glucagon injection to bump it up. Now he's been in the 70s, which is good improvement."
"When's the soonest I can see him?"
"About a half-hour."
"Thank you."
She hung up.
Judy raced through the lobby, catching the attention of multiple animals, including Benjamin Clawhauser. As soon as she was about to reach the doors, she heard his familiar voice.
"Judy, where are going?"
Judy stopped in her tracks. After taking a few breaths to calm herself, she walked back to Clawhauser's desk. She felt her eyes begin to water as she tried to muster up the courage to speak.
"Nick's in the hospital." she strained. "I have to go see him."
When the nurse led Judy to Nick's room, she was surprised to see Finnick sitting in one the chairs next to his bed. His gaze rose from Nick to her.
"Took you long enough." he grumbled.
The nurse left the room, leaving the three alone. Judy sat in the other chair next to Nick's bed. She suddenly felt guilty about everything. The tears were about to come...
"Don't cry, Judy." Finnick ordered with a glare in his eyes. "You think I cried when I had to call for an ambulance? Do you, Judy?"
Judy couldn't even responded to that. She hadn't known that Finnick had been the one to call. The fennec crossed his arms angrily and he turned away.
"Well, I tried my best not to..." he mumbled.
Judy suddenly felt bad for the small fox. If someone like Finnick had to try to hold back tears, it must've really hurt him. He could've been somewhat traumatized when he saw his friend dropping to unconsciousness.
"Your the one who called..."
He nodded.
"We had a late night. We were just catching up with each other and hanging out. Obviously, doing nothing bad, since he's a cop now."
Judy nodded.
"After a while, he started acting all weird. He got real quiet and looked all nervous. Little did we know... it was because his blood sugar was dropping." Finnick sighed sadly.
Judy looked to Nick, who, surprisingly, was still sleeping. She figured with all the talking he would've woken up by now. But, there he was, hooked up to multiple machines and conked out.
"I didn't know he was diabetic."
The fennec shook his head.
"He's not."
"That's correct." a new voice said.
Both Finnick and Judy looked to the door. A male tiger with a white lab coat came walking in. He stopped just beside Nick's bed, glancing at the screens of the monitors that were attached to him.
"Nicholas, here, in fact, is not diabetic. But, he went into a phase of what most people refer to as hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar."
Judy nodded, remembering that the lady on the phone from earlier had told her something about Nicks blood sugar being too low. It had been in the low 20s, was what the lady had said.
"His glucose level was as low as 22. Quite frankly, you can consider him lucky to not be in a coma." the doctor smiled.
Judy smiled back at the doctor. She felt so thankfully that Nick was alive, and so far, doing well. She stuck out her tiny paw for him to shake.
"Officer Hopps."
"Dr. Deckley."
"Well look who's finally decided to join the living." Judy joked as she motioned to the just awoken Nick.
"Hey, Carrots." Nick smiled softly.
"Finnick left about forty-five minutes ago, in case you're wondering. He said that he was tired of watching you sleep like a baby."
Nick laughed.
"That's okay. I got a chance to talk to him earlier, but I was in and out alot."
Nick forced himself upwards with paws and repositioned himself so he was sitting up rather than laying down.
"I'm hungry."
Judy smirked.
"Oh, I'm sure. You haven't eaten at all since yesterday."
As if on cue a wolf nurse walked in. He wore a dark blue uniform and had a badge clipped to the collar of it. In his paw, he carried a small black pouch. He held it in the air so Nick could see it.
"Can you guess what time it is, Wilde?" the nurse asked, obviously goofing around.
"Indeed, I can, Nurse Gregerson." Nick replied joining the game.
Judy watched as Nurse Gregerson unzipped the black pouch. Inside was a bunch of new things that Judy had never seen before. There was a oval shaped screen, a small cylinder with a dial in the end, and a small oddly shaped box.
"Now, watch and learn, Carrots." Nick smirked.
The wolf nurse pulled out an alcohol wipe from his pocket, once he had ripped it open, he took Nick's second finger and cleaned the top of it. After that, Nurse Gregerson messed with the dial on the cylinder. He pressed the bottom of it onto Nick's finger and clicked the button down that was on top the small cylinder.
Nick looked to Judy and winked. He obviously thought that this was pretty cool stuff.
Nurse Gregerson opened the small oddly shaped box and pulled out a small white rectangle piece of... something. He put the 'something' in the bottom of the oval shaped screen and it beeped. The nurse brought both items over to Nick. The end of the 'something' was placed on Nick's finger. Another beep was heard.
"Boom!" Nick said sarcastically while making an explosion gesture with his paws. "You get all that, Carrots?"
It was clear that she didn't.
"Uh..."
"That's okay. You'll learn." Nick said as he playfully pat the top of her head. "It makes it easy when he's in here doing this every hour."
Nurse Gregerson laughed at that. He abruptly brought the oval shaped screen to his face, looking at whatever was on there.
"What are we at, Gregerson?" Nick asked.
"63."
Judy caught on quickly.
"That's his blood sugar right now?" she asked curiously.
"Clever Bunny." Nick teased.
"Yep." replied the nurse. "But, that is a bit too low. How about some food, Wilde? That should bring it back up."
"You read my mind." Nick smiled.
Hey guys. I'm thinking about ditching the first two chapters and just starting things out with the third. What are your thoughts?
