Chapter 3: Yumi
Sora and Mike were sitting on the couch with apprehensive looks on their faces when Yumi walked in.
"You want to talk to me?"
"Yes, darling." Sora softly tapped on the empty space between her and Mike. "Please, sit here."
"Okay." She replied rather nervous, but sat anyway.
"So Mike and I have been talking and decided to move to England."
"What?! Mom!"
"I know you have your friends here and everything, but you're gonna love London. I promise."
"Why do we have to go?"
"Mike has to go back and we don't want to be away from each other."
"Can't you stay?" She turned around and looked at him with desperate eyes.
"No, Yumi. I'm sorry. He has his job there and he's gone long enough."
"You have the flower shop!" Yumi tried desperately to change her mother's mind.
"That's true. Mimi agreed to help me while I'm away. I'll ask for Taichi's help too."
"I don't want to go, mom."
"You have no choice, sweetie. We're leaving in two days."
"Two days?!" Tears appeared in the corner of her eyes. "I will barely have time to say goodbye to my friends."
"I'm sorry, Yumi. You can still talk to them through phone or video calls."
"That's not the same, mom." She stood up and ran crying to her bedroom.
"Are you sure about this?" Mike approached his girlfriend and grabbed her hands gently.
"Yes." She said firmly, but her eyes said otherwise. "Not really. But it's the right thing to do. I can't live with the idea of Yamato ever knowing he has a daughter."
"Have you talked to someone about this?"
"To Mimi only. She thinks I shouldn't run away like this."
"I agree with her. It's better to tell him. Maybe you can clear everything out with him and finally move on completely."
"Oh I have moved on."
"Sora."
"Is it so hard to believe me?"
"Your face is telling something different. You are so desperate to walk away thinking it's the best for everyone, but deep down you know it's not. You are so sure you're gonna lose Yumi, and you won't."
"I can't risk it, Mike."
"I know. I know." He pulled her closer and hugged her. "I hope you know you're taking away her chance to meet her real father. And she might not forgive you if she finds out. The same works for him."
"I know, but I'm doing this for her. Yamato is not a good influence for her. She's only 7, can you imagine how she would be if she finds out about him? He's gonna want to teach her how to play guitar and turn her into a little rockstar."
"Aren't you exaggerating a little here? By the way, you just sounded like your mother. Wasn't she the one who wanted you to follow her steps when you were a child?"
"These are completely different situations. My father didn't run away."
"I know he didn't, and that's not what I mean."
"I know, I know." Sora sighed. "I'm just nervous these days. I'm sorry for taking this on you."
"You didn't." He pulled her closer and embraced her. "I love you."
"I love you, too."
Yumi was sitting on a bench in the hallway waiting for Kimi, her best friend. She's had a sad look on her face since she arrived at school.
"Hey, are you okay?" A blonde man knelt down in front of her. The music teacher.
"I will be." She looked up at him with tearful eyes. "I'm moving to another country tomorrow and I don't wanna go."
"I'm sorry to hear that, but maybe it will be a good thing for you in the end."
"I don't want to go. All my friends are here. Can't you talk to her?"
"I…I…" He couldn't find words to say. "Why don't you try talking to her about how you're feeling? Maybe this will help you."
"She won't change her mind. She never listens to me."
"What's her name?"
"It's…" She was interrupted by Kimi. "I'm sorry, I have to go." She stood up and gave him a smile. "But thanks for talking to me. I feel a little better now."
The man stood up. "You're welcome. I hope everything works out for you." He smiled a little and whispered to himself. "What a nice little girl."
He watched them walk away for a while as he his mind returned to his childhood/teenage days. Yumi reminded him of someone who used to be very important to him. Could it be?
"Nah." He mumbled to himself once again as he turned to head back to the music room. "It's probably just a coincidence."
Sora was at the back of her store with Mimi as they waited for Taichi to arrive, so she could give them instructions on how to manage the store.
"So, how did Yumi react to the news?"
"Badly, but I was already expecting it. My heart was broken, but this is for the best."
"Sora, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure." She looked up from the notebook and stared at her friend.
"Why are you still insisting on this?"
"Mimi, please."
"Look at you! It's written all over your face that you don't want to move away."
"I'm protecting my daughter."
"I think you're running away from Yamato because you still have feelings for him!"
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?" Sora placed both hands on the table and pushed the chair away with her butt and legs, standing up and leaning forward.
"You still have feelings for him! You're still hurt over what he did to you seven years ago."
"Whoa, what's going on over here?" Taichi walked in and saw the two women ready to jump on each other's throats. "Our screams can be heard from the street."
"Taichi, thank God you're here! I'm trying to convince her not to run away."
"I'm not running away, Mimi! I said I'm protecting my daughter."
"No one believes that, Sora. I think not even you do. You're taking Yumi's right to know her father away from her."
"She's seven years old! She will thank me later."
"Or maybe she won't."
"Stop trying to turn my daughter against me."
"I'm not trying to turn her against you! I'm trying to make you see what you're doing here." Mimi looked at Taichi. "Please help me change her mind."
"Don't you dare do that, Taichi." Sora also looked at him. "For the sake of our friendship, you don't want to do that."
"I'm hand-tight."
"Oh you're such a moron." The brunette turned her attention back to her best friend. "Sora, please."
"It's already decided, Mimi. There's no turning back now. You two can't understand it now, but you will someday."
"Of course you can still turn back."
"Mimi, I'm gonna say this one last time and I hope we won't have this conversation ever again. I don't want to turn back. I want to go to England with Mike and Yumi."
Yamato arrived home after a very long day. He placed his bag on the couch and went to the kitchen.
"Something smells good."
"Thanks, I'm trying a new recipe I found in the internet."
"You cook now? Wow, things really changed around here."
"I had to learn if I wanted to survive. Mom was often out and either I would die from starvation or learn how to make my own food. Dying wasn't in my plans, so..."
"I can't wait to try it."
"Are you sure?" Takeru looked at him with a sort of mischievous face.
"Oh God! You're gonna prank me!"
"I still didn't forget that you put pepper on my food when I stayed over here back when we were teenagers, but dad ended up eating it."
"Oh my God!" Yamato started laughing. "He was so pissed! He wouldn't let me cook for two weeks."
"I don't blame him."
"Neither would I if I were in his place." The older blonde smiled. "So, when does your internship start again?"
"In about two weeks." Takeru pulled a chair and sat down. "How's the searching of our apartment going?"
"I'm still looking, but haven't found anything yet. I'm actually going to visit one tomorrow, if you want to come."
"Sure." He took a sip of his tea. "Have you realized that this is the first time we'll be living together after many years?"
"That's true. We mostly grew up away from each other. It will be cool to live with you and without our parents. How's mom dealing with it?"
"Honestly, better than I expected. I have a feeling she'll be moving here after I move out."
"Really?"
"I think she might have feelings for dad again." Takeru looked at his brother and his expression summed up what he was feeling. "Exactly."
"Well, if it makes her happy."
"I just hope she won't be disappointed later."
"Me too. But that's bound to happen, I guess."
"Do you think we should talk to her?"
"Nah. I think she's grown enough to know where she's stepping into. Plus, I think she knows how dad works. He hasn't changed that much, from what I can see."
"We never thought they'd be hooking up again after so many years either."
"You have a point." Yamato looked away for a bit.
"What's going on?"
"Have you…" The older blonde looked back at his brother. "Have you ever had a feeling you might know someone?"
"What? I'm not following."
"Today I saw a little girl at school. She was crying and upset that she had to move away with her parents, though she didn't want to."
"Okay, so…?"
"She reminded me so much of…" He closed his eyes and shook his head. The idea seemed unreal, even for him. "She reminded me so much of her."
"Her?" Takeru knew exactly whom he was referring to. "You think she might be her daughter?"
"I don't know. It might just be a coincidence. You never heard of her possibly having a child, right?"
"Well, we lost touch not too long after you left. I guess being around us was too much for her."
"I wish she wouldn't have gone through this. She didn't deserve it."
"No, she didn't. But you made your choice on what mattered to you the most back then."
"She mattered a lot to me, Takeru."
"I know. But so did touring with the Teenage Wolves."
"I know it sounds weird, but I'd do things differently now."
"That's not weird, Yamato. That's mature. You're expected to do things in a different way after growing up and evolving."
"When did you become the most reasonable person in this family?"
"I always have been, you just never realized it."
"My gosh, I think your ego just touched the sky."
"Not quite." Takeru became serious right away. "If you feel like you'd do things differently, why don't you call her?"
"Nah, it's been too many years. She's probably married to another guy. It's naïve to think she'd wait for me."
"You never know."
"You really liked her, didn't you?"
"Yeah, but you know that already. She would always look out for me and take care of me."
"Yeah, that's one of the things that made me fall in love with her."
"Makes."
"What?"
"You should see your face when you said that phrase."
"Takeru, you're delusional."
"I am not. So are you going to call her or will I have to do it myself?"
"Ugh, you can be so annoying sometimes, you know?"
"If that means seeing my brother happy with the woman he loves, then yes I can."
"Fine. I'll try to find out where she works and maybe show up by surprise. But I'm warning you that if she attacks me or something, I'm going after you when I come back."
"She won't. Trust me."
The lounge was unusually crowded for a morning. The couple went to check-in and the rest of the group headed to the chairs.
"So this is it, right?" Mimi was the first one to speak when Sora and Mike returned.
"Yes."
"I'm gonna miss you so much! How can I stay here without my best friend?"
"I know, it'll be hard for me too. But I promise we can talk through video calls twice a week maybe."
"Maybe? You're lucky I'm not asking for a daily call."
"As you shouldn't." Taichi said. "She's only doing this for me."
"WHAT?" The brunette asked loudly.
"I'm also her best friend, remember? And have been longer than you." He replied in a rather playful tone.
"This is not fair, Sora!"
"Mimi, he's only joking. We won't be talking everyday."
"Oh good."
"When's the flight?" Hikari asked. "Do you have some more time or…"
She was cut off by the voice in the speaker announcing the flight 445 to London.
"I guess I have my answer."
"Noooooooo!" Mimi cried. "Please don't leave me."
"Mimi, stop being so dramatic. It's not like I'm dying or something."
"I know, I know. But it's still sad. I will miss you."
"I'll miss you too. But technology is here to help us." Sora turned to her daughter. "Are you ready?"
Yumi simply looked up at her and nodded slowly. Her eyes were still teary and red from crying. Sora's heart broke in a million pieces, but reminded herself this was for the best.
"You're gonna love travelling by plane." It was Mike who spoke, trying to make things easier for them. "I'll even let you sit by the window."
The little girl smiled shyly, but still avoided eye contact with them. Sora looked at her boyfriend and whispered a "thank you". He smiled back and grabbed her hand.
"We're in this together."
They hugged their friends and walked towards the gate and to the airplane.
"So, this is it."
"Are we really doing this? She's gonna be so pissed when she finds out."
"Have you seen Yumi's face? She was devastated." Mimi said.
"But still, this is not our problem, Mimi." Hikari stated. "None of us would like to have our lives invaded this way."
"She has a point." Koushiro said. "They are the ones who need to solve this thing."
"Look, Sora is running away from it. She doesn't want to solve it. I've tried to talk to her about this many times and she wouldn't listen. I don't like doing it, but I see no solution. You two don't need to take part in this if you don't want to."
"We came this far, didn't we?"
"Hikari, did you get Takeru's number?"
"Well, we haven't talked for a long time. So I don't know if it's still his number. But we can try."
She handed Mimi the paper containing his number and the brunette dialed it and turned on the speaker, so everyone could listen to what was happening.
"It's ringing!"
"Hello?"
