Chapter Three

"Luke!" Sarah Jane called, chasing after her son. She could hear Jacqueline's footsteps behind her. Briefly, Sarah Jane wondered how the woman could possibly be running in those four-inch heels of hers. "Luke, stop! Please! Luke!"

"Get away from me!" he shouted over his shoulder, continuing to flee. Sarah Jane gritted her teeth and pushed herself harder, speeding to catch up with him. She tailed him until finally, out of breath, Luke slowed to a halt and spun around to face her.

"How could you do that? Don't you remember what she did to us? What she did to me? I can't believe you just kissed her like that, M – Sarah Jane!"

Sarah Jane swallowed the emotion the use of her first name instead of "Mum" brought, hiding the hurt she felt at his disregard for their bond. If she wasn't his mother, and he didn't consider Mrs. Wormwood to be his mother either…

"Luke, it wasn't what it looked like. I had to distract her."

"I wasn't aware distractions had to last for more than twenty seconds."

They both jumped at the sound of Jacqueline's voice. The redhead came into view for Sarah Jane, her skin flushed pink – from the run, fight, or the kiss? – and her hair hanging loose around her shoulders. Though she would never admit it aloud, Sarah Jane felt she looked almost… pretty.

"Well," Sarah Jane huffed, trying in vain to hide her growing blush from both Luke and Jacqueline. "It was a distraction nonetheless." Turning back to Luke, she said, "Luke, where's Maria?"

Luke shifted his weight between his feet. "At home, where you left us. I came looking for you after she pointed out you'd been gone longer than usual. And then… Jeez, Mum, I didn't know you liked making out with our bloody enemies. Want me to call up the Doctor and ask if he's got any you can seduce in your free time?"

Both women flushed at that. Sarah Jane held her breath for a moment in hopes that her blush would disperse. It didn't.

"Luke, I'm sorry for any confusion I might've caused you, but I was not kissing her by choice!"

"Oh, right. I forgot. You just kiss anyone you like. Hey, how 'bout instead of asking the Doc for enemies, you offer to kiss him instead?"

"Luke!"

"Mum, for all the bloody – Hold on, shouldn't your alien-detector thingy be going off like crazy if Miss Kill-Us-All is standing so close?"

Sarah Jane had barely noticed how close she and Jacqueline had subconsciously gotten. She took a few steps forward, toward Luke, while Mrs. Wormwood backed up. Sarah Jane then pulled out her "alien-detector", as Luke called it, and listened for beeping.

"See? Not going off."

Sarah Jane frowned. "Maybe it's broken," she said, and shrugged. She held it a little closer to Jacqueline. It still made no noise. Sarah Jane took out her spare (she always carried extra) and repeated the process.

"What does it mean?" asked Luke, all betrayal from earlier forgotten. He and Jacqueline both peered at the words on the screen: No alien life detected.

"The odds of it being wrong are impossible," said Sarah Jane, pocketing the device and looking at the two curious onlookers. "So the only possible conclusion is," Sarah Jane turned to Jacqueline.

"You're not an alien anymore."

What do you guys think happens next? I have no plot so feel free to give me ideas, if you think more chapters are needed. I might just end it here, though, so if that's the case, thanks for reading!
