chapter 3: hierarchy in Slytherin and 1st day at class.
Harry shook his head as he followed the Prefects commands of standing in a line and following him, his mind was going through several things all at once, and thanks to his occumelency training and eidetic memory, it was very much easy thing for him and allowed to run several thoughts at once.
The prime matter that troubled him was Dumbledore's last announcement of not going to the third floor corridor, the old man might be a senile, meddling and manipulative but he was also a very clever and cunning politician who had ruled the Wizengamot and the ICW for the last forty years, which means he very well knew what he was saying, when and where, so announcing something 'that' dangerous in a hall full of curious children who will no doubt try to explore the ancient castle on the first chance they get was something beyond simple senility...and that was indeed a troubling thing.
The prefects lead them all down to the dungeons, where they stopped in front of a blank stretch of wall, with the portrait of lady Amanda on it. 'The password is, "Veni, vidi, vici".' 'The literal translation is "I came, I saw, I conquered." 'We as Slytherins are meant to do exactly that'. The prefect said the password again and the wall opened
The common room was a large rectangular room with a low ceiling and lamps that gave off a greenish glow. Hadrian assumed it was because the dungeons are partially under the lake. The floor was made of nice looking black and grey stones. He looked up and noticed that there were four large chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The room was full of dark green leather couches with bookshelves covering the walls in dark wood. It has a grand atmosphere and was warmer than Hadrian would have thought it would be, he attributed it to the four large roaring fireplaces. In front of the fireplaces were large black leather chairs and love seats with green and silver throw pillows. There were several large tables with high backed chairs, Hadrian assumed they were used for doing homework and several portraits hung on the walls.
Once they reached the Slytherin common room, the prefects told them to wait there because Professor Snape wanted to talk to them before they went to bed. Not much later said man rushed into the room his robes billowing behind him probably to intimidate the first years.
"You have all been sorted into the noble House of Slytherin" he started while still walking before he stopped and turned around to face them, his voice a mere whisper but it caught the attention of everyone with ease. "And that means following certain rules. For one, while you are in the common room you can act or fight with each other as you see fit, however once you step out of the common room and into the halls of Hogwarts, you will show unity.
The house of Slytherin already has a bad standing with the other houses as it is and I will not tolerate you showing any weakness towards them. Second, whatever you do…do not get caught. Should any of you lose house points because said person thinks that school rules do not apply to him or her and is stupid enough to get caught for it said person will have to answer to me, is that clear?" he asked getting fearful nods in return. Only Hadrian and Malfoy nodded confidently.
"Good, Should there be any problems, be it personal or with the curriculum do not hesitate to ask either the prefects or me. For questions of any kind, my door always open for you. Any more questions?" silence was the only response. "Very well, I advise you to go to your rooms and sleep because school will start up tomorrow morning. You will find the girl rooms on the right and the boys on the left. Your luggage will be waiting for you when you go down, Goodnight." With that Snape left. Hadrian relaxed and went to sit in the sofa in the corner.
Oi Potter," A voice said, Hadrian turned to see what looked like a sixth year student walking up to him. "I can't help but wonder what you're doing in the snake pit." He said, looking at Harry, like he was a bothersome insect.
"I'm sorry?" Harry asked, raising an eyebrow. Harry was well aware that the whole common room was now looking at him and the sixth year.
"What's a son of mud blood like you doing in here?" The boy all but demanded to know.
"The hat decided that Slytherin was best for me," Harry shrugged. "that's about it."
"You probably tricked the hat" the boy demanded
"Kinda thing a slytherin would do" harry smirked.
The boy inched forward and grabbed his collar pulling him up. Harry was forced on to stand on his tip-toes. "Listen up I don't know what makes you think that we welcome you to snake pit and we are members of noble house of Slytherin Don't even think we would worship the land you walks on because you are boy who..
Whatever the Slytherin was about to say was cut short when he was thrown across the common room. Entire common room who watched the exchange become stunned silence. Draco Malfoy who seen this bellowed ' expelliarmus' due to anger and embarrassment caused by friendship rejection. Hadrian who seen this in corner of an eye sidestepped and whispered 'Incarcerous , Pertrificus totalus' to direction of Draco and stunning spell to the sixth year student. cords sprung from his wand tying the Draco up. All this happened in blink of an eye. All students in students in common room looked at Hadrian with fear and awe, disbelief. Noticing the look he decided to assert his dominance.
"How pathetic,...I find myself disappointed" Harry confessed "I mean, I enter the house of the cunning and ambitious and the first thing I see is one gut trying to belittle me and other guy to start hexing me. I expected Slytherin to be more...civilised. I fell like I can work with it. But it is disappointing, I mean all of you Slytherins go on and on about how smart you are. Then boy-who-lived walks into your den and you charge like a Gryffindor instead of biding your time and assessing the threat he poses. Though I can understand why, you're all older and more experienced and you thought you can bend me to your will and use me. Well if anyone of you have any plan I telling you to crumble it and put it in your pocket." He whispered in a sharp tone though due to silence everyone heard it.
He then turned to the rest of the house. "This is a message to all of you, do not underestimate me, do not test me, and do not disturb me. You lot are the most self -centred and bigoted people I've ever seen. And you tarnish the name of Slytherin. Come to me after you've fixed yourself and while I am here for the next 7 years I going pluck out the weeds in this house."
Harry calmly walked up to Daphne and Tracy, the girls were in a corner and couldn't back away as he approached.
"Ladies" Harry said "I shall see you tomorrow" He gave them a short bow and smile before walking off and up to the first year boy rooms.
In Slytherin each boy had their own room, once he entered he put several alerting and silencing ward around the room and set up wardrobe when exhaustion hit him so he stripped off his clothes and went to bed.
The next morning, Harry found himself on the grounds, running around the perimeter of the Black Lake. He had been running ever since he was seven, so his stamina had built up over time. After thirty minutes, he felt hot and sweaty. He liked running he felt so free from all the world. his shirt, he sighed in contentment as the cool air hit his bare chest as he ran and practised martial arts for another hour. He was studying from a sensei since seven Once he was finished with his daily workout, he made his way back to the tower to take a bath. His housemates gave him curious looks and subtle glance from older students when they saw him all sweaty and pink in the face.
When he returned he saw Daphne in the corner of common room, he gave a pleasant smile to her when she noticed.
you made quite an impression yesterday." Daphne commented idly.
"Really?" Harry asked in an amused voice.
"Yeah," Tracy said just as she and Blaise came down to common room "I heard older students talking about it after you went to sleep" She said
"Alright, I am going to great hall " he asked you guys coming
"But you don't know the way" Daphne pointed out "we have to wait for a prefect"
"Actually I do know the way" Harry replied "I memorised it last night. Trust me, you guys coming" with that he walked off from the common room. They followed him nonetheless while Daphne muttered "if I am late for class I going to frost your bits off potter"
A few minutes later they arrived in the great hall.
"Wow, you actually did remember" Tracy said with a bit of surprise in her voice.
"Of course if I don't I wouldn't let two lovely ladies to follow me" he said indignantly while Tracey blushed but there is no visible reaction from Daphne.
they sat down and they began consuming breakfast, they took their time as they had to wait there until their schedules arrived. They chat and lightly talked with each other as the other students arrived. Many of the students, especially the Slytherins were surprised to see the group already sitting there. Shrugging they went with their breakfast even though older years sent subtle glance at him which he noticed.
When they finished and decided to get up, Snape went along the table and handed out the timetables. Hadrian took his with a polite "Thank you." and saw that they had Transfiguration first with griffs , followed by charms with claws, break and History with griffs and Defence against dark arts with puffs, all in all not a bad day. The worst day however would be Wednesday when they had not only double History of Magic, but also Astronomy in the middle of the night. Not that Hadrian hated History, quite the contrary actually but according to everyone, Binns not only long dead but also taught them History in the most boring way that everyone had a very hard time not falling asleep. He loved History he believed 'those who don't know the history will repeat the same mistake twice'. He grew up with reading family histories and goblin wars.
After a few more minutes, Hadrian and his friends got up, picked up their bags and left the great hall and to walk over to the transfiguration classroom on 4th floor. He sat in 3rd row with Daphne. He saw a tabby cat on the desk of professor McGonagall. He went closer to examine the cat as cat's gaze narrowed at him.
He observed more and found spectacle markings around its eyes. He smirked at the cat and whispered, "Amazing technique Professor. There is no better way to demonstrate Transfiguration better than an animagus transformation isn't it? I'm impressed" he mouthed to the wide-eyed cat and sat down with his friends.
the rest of the class started taking their seats. Harry saw one boy, Neville Longbottom, deciding where to sit. Harry gestured the empty seat at his side and Neville looked very nervous but sat down next to him.
A few minutes later, Ron weasley and Seamus Finnigan burst into the room and smiled when they saw that no teachers were there.
"We're lucky" said Seamus "McGonagall would have killed us if we were late"
"I know" Ron nodded "can you imagine the look on her face if we were late?"
"You won't have to imagine for too long" Harry said, catching both boys attention.
"What do you mean?" Ron asked
"She's right there" Harry pointed to the cat on the desk.
"Are you even senile?" Ron laughed "that's just a stupid cat"
Before more could be said the 'stupid cat' jumped off the desk and transformed into the stern Professor McGonagall. Ron's jaw dropped and Harry looked very smug.
"Ten points to Slytherin for deduction Mr Potter" She said before turning to the other two "now may I ask why you were late?"
"We...woke up late" Ron admitted
"Well perhaps next time I can transform one of you into a pocket watch, that way at least one of you can be able to get here on time. Now find your seats
Mr Potter. How did you recognise me?" she asked.
Harry gave a small smile and said "we are in a transfiguration class, a class where we learn to change things into other things. Plus that cat is far too behaved, also it has patches on it's eyes that could be glasses. If I had to guess, I would say that the professor is an animagus, a witch or wizard with the ability to transform into an animal. Correct Professor?"
Correct" Professor McGonagall said with a small smile on her thin lips "excellent reasoning Mr Potter
"Thank you Professor" Harry smiled back. He could sense the reactions of everyone around him, even if he didn't react to them. Tracy and Daphne didn't know what to think of him, as of the moment they were surprised. Some people were surprised, while others were jealous of him. He could practically feel it oozing of Hermione Granger.
Soon Professor McGonagall went through an introduction of the class, explaining the dangers of the subject and telling the class how she would basically not have any messing about. After that she turned her desk into a pig and back, she gave them notes.
Then she taught them theMutatio spell showing it's correct wand movement before flicking her wand, conjuring a single wooden matchstick in front of every student. "You all have the time till the end of this class to convert this matchstick into a steel needle. Always remember, the three things needed are- Will Power, Imagination and Focus. Now begin!"
Harry simply spoke the incantation, waving his wand over the matchstick and it turned into a perfect needle. "Well done, Mr Potter. That will be 10 points to Slytherin." Harry nodded, and helped Daphne, who was sat next to him. When they both had finished, Harry continued to style his needle further, changing it to green with silver stripes and adding the Slytherin crest to the side. When he had finished, McGonagall was shocked. All that from a first-year student and on his first attempt. Regaining her composure, she stopped in front of his table. "Fabulous work Mr Potter. Even your father did not do as well as this on his first attempt, despite the fact that he was a prodigy in transfiguration." Harry beamed inside at the mention of his father, but did not let this show on His face.
However, he soon found a way to enjoy himself once more. "Professor," he began innocently, "why is that girl over there glaring at me? Did I do something wrong?" he was pointing at the resident know-it-all, Hermione Granger. She had wondered how he had done the transfiguration so quickly, especially when she had been studying non-stop since the day she had received her Hogwarts letter.
"You did not, Mr Potter. Miss Granger, why are you glaring at Mr Potter?" McGonagall was all too familiar with the gleam in Harry's eyes- she had seen it a few too many times in the eyes of the Marauders and the Weasley twins. Though she was not convinced by the innocent tone in his voice, she knew his complaint was completely valid.
Hermione, realising she had been caught, tried to stop glaring but found that she couldn't. "I wasn't Professor."
When professor McGonagall carefully observed the needle , she noticed a glint of silver in the needle he transfigured "stay behind the class" she said
Thank you Professor" Harry smiled at her, and once she left he began helping Nott and Tracy who had eventually got it as well. Granger came close, but not as good as Harry or his friends. Neville was still having difficulties and Harry couldn't seem to work out why.
After the class finished, he went over to professor "Mr Potter how in the merlin did you have the control over magic to put silver in your transfiguration" She asked
Every metal want different magical control and magic to conjure. Copper and silver is the metals that want high magical control and core, While the former want more magic but less control latter want high magical control and core . That is why only masters in transfiguration can do it. McGonagall herself got magically exhausted after conjuring silver stool. The boy in front of her put silver in his transfiguration is truly remarkable. If the boy can understand magic behind the transfiguration and manipulate it he can achieve mastery easily and if push hard he can be at grand sorcerer level. If he wish She can teach the son of her two favourite students to improve the understanding of transfiguration to certain level. She was determined to not lose the diamond in the dirt.
"During childhood I had an accidental magic and I lose control so I had control my magic before further using." He replied which is partially true
At the age of five , they broke the binding of magical core placed by Albus Dumbledore, fortunately for them the magical burst during break along the sacrificial protection of his mother destroyed the soul fragment reside in his scar. He lost his control over magic. It took him five years to regain the control. Until he regain control of his magic he decided to attend mundane school and study martial arts thanks to his eidetic memory, At the age of nine he covered high school with distinction. His favourite subjects are chemistry and mathematics, during the summer he heard from a local while traveling through China, there is a monk teaches magic over a hill so as a any teenager would do he went there to investigate. Harry remembered the incident as clear as day
Chinese monks made sure their secrets weren't exposed to everyone, so if someone wanted to watch or learn Chinese magic, they had to learn it from a monk and then promise to keep it a secret. Outsiders rarely knew about it because the monks are terribly hard to convince that a learner was trustworthy, and the lessons itself were very taxing for those who weren't familiar to the discipline from their
The monk was called Master Chi. And he was a right bastard.
When Harry asked the old man that He wanted to learn, he merely glanced at him and went back meditating, ignoring him completely expecting the child to go away after few minutes. But Harry was as stubborn as they came. He decided to wait until Master wake up from meditation, he has a portkey to the take him to America.
When Master Chi finished his meditation after three hours, he was irritated, and a little intrigued by the boy waiting quietly.
"What do you want, child?" he asked. Harry wanted to scowl at being called a child, but he didn't.
"I want to learn." He replied flatly. The old Master shook his head.
"You cannot learn." He said in a dismissive way.
"Why not?" Harry shot back.
"You do not have the power or skill."
"You couldn't walk when you were born. Did your mother refuse to teach you how to walk because of that?" Harry said irritably, not caring if the man was offended. Master Chi, however, was simply amused. He was above being offended by mundane words.
"I will consider if you pass a test." He said and the teen perked up.
"Bring it on!" he said with enthusiasm.
"Run down this hill and then climb back up without stopping. If you stop, you can take that portkey and go away." He smirked at the boy, knowing that he would most probably faint on the way. If he didn't flee before that. The view of the two kilometres jagged, uneven climb was quite discouraging.
Thanks to practice of martial arts his stamina is quite high. After two hours, Harry was panting like a dog in front of a thoroughly surprised Master Chi. The boy should have fainted several times the way he ran up and down the mountain. Quickly, he gave him a cup of tea to drink. Wordlessly, he chugged the whole cup, burning his tongue in the process, but the effect was instantaneous. His breathing slowed down and he stood up straight, looking like he had merely taken a short walk in the park.
"Couldn't give something cooler, could you?" he said darkly to the Master, who chuckled. This one held lots of promises.
"What is your name, child?" he asked the young boy.
"Harry Potter."
He studied earth and air magic along with mind magic to control his magic. He lived with master for 2 years and learned to control his magic. He was quite intrigued by the working of magical community in China and culture.
"You have a excellent control over your magic and potential to a transfiguration Master so I don't wish to waste it, from now own I intend to improve your understanding which means when I tell the students to transfigure a ball to spoon, I wish you to transfigure it into a silver or copper spoon. Do you understand Mr Potter?" she asked. He nodded and went to next class.
Harry and the other Slytherin first years made their way to charms class, Harry was admittedly excited at the fact that he was going to charms class.
Harry had also been told by Daphne that not only was Professor Flitwick a great teacher, he was also a former duelling champion. Even though his mother is a prodigy in charms he has problems with charms so he decided to pay attention to the classes of professor Flitwick.
Harry had sat between Nott and Daphne once they had entered the class, the Ravenclaws followed after.
Eventually Professor Flitwick arrived, the professor was without doubt the smallest person Harry had ever met, not including goblins, in Harry's eyes that just made it more impressive. It was amazing to know that despite being physically smaller, the man was still one of the best teachers in the school and a powerful wizard. With that being said Professor Flitwick still had to stand on top of a pile of books. He started by doing a roll call of all the students, when he got to Harry's name his eyes quickly darted to Harry and he fell off his books.
After a few students helped him up, the roll call and then the lesson continued.
"Now everyone," Professor Flitwick said after the roll call. "as this is the first lesson, I am not expecting very advanced spells from you all, all I ask is that you try your best. I want to start you all off with a simple but useful spell, the wand lighting spell. An example for when it can be used is if you ever find yourself standing in the dark. The spell creates a small light on the tip of your wand, I should warn you that it is fairly warm so be careful that you don't use it near something that can easily catch fire, it's a very small risk but still possible. The incantation for this spell is " Lumos." Upon saying the incantation, Professor Flitwick's wand tip lit up and small white light rested on the tip. "There you see, now I want you all to try."
Professor Flitwick had the class practice the spell and also the spell 'Nox', which was the wand extinguishing charm, AKA the counter to Lumos. Once Professor Flitwick had done that he had them go over some theory of spells, admittedly Harry wished they could learn more spells but he understood the need to at least do some theory.
After lunch, it was History of Magic. Professor Binns, the ghost teacher, went on and on about goblin rebellions but didn't seem to teach the actual history of witches and wizards. There was so much about their past that people needed to know. History was one of Harry's favourite subjects, but this was beyond ridiculous.
He didn't bother listening to the ghost. He took out his book on Advanced occumelency and started reading. He had come across a wonderful charm a few months back. He could mask the book and its pages so that no one would figure out that he wasn't reading the first year textbooks. It would also give him an avenue to read in most of his classes after he finished his work. Merlin knows he would be bored otherwise. Just as He walked outed out of room Ron weasley along Seamus Finnigan stopped him.
"I can't believe boy who lived is a slimy snake." Ron said
"Believe what you want, hopefully you'll end up believing something that might match with our reality." Harry replied in a calm voice.
"But you are meant to be a Gryffindor where your parents went " Ron said with indignantly
"We are not always our parents Mr weasley" harry replied and continued to walk to next class
The next class was Defence. Harry couldn't put his finger on it, but there was something definitely wrong with Professor Quirrell. His stutter didn't sound natural. Professor Quirrell seemed to be afraid of his own shadow and Harry was deeply disappointed that such an important subject was wasted on the fool. The class have a smell of garlic. Professor Quirrell said the stutter came from the encounter between him and a vampire in Albania, Harry didn't believe him of course. He knew There is something wrong with Professor, all his instinct told him to neutralize the man hard and fast.
'why Dumbledore gave to this stuttering fool instead of an Auror, surely Dumbledore should've some Aurors in his pocket? Why did professor keep stuttering when there is potion to cure it? Didn't stuttering have problem with spell casting? Could Dumbledore be more senile?' he thought dryly.
