A Light in the Darkness Chapter 3

The minutes passed and Matthew and Jess hadn't moved, they sat simply sat silently before Matt broke the silence

"You know we could just stay right here." Suggested Matthew.

"Sure because you know you know we don't have jobs or anything."

"Well we're not exactly 9 to 5'ers are we."

"Well you used to be, until the coma." She said sarcastically.

"Yeah, well. I'm pretty sure the 9 to 5 life wasn't for me anyway.

Jessica turned and stared at him. "You'd give up being a lawyer?"

"Maybe I…I don't know I don't suppose I've ever really thought about it." He told her, but in fact he had been thinking about it more and more and he knew that Jessica wasn't buying his answer and she immediately called him out.

"That's bullshit and we both know!" Jessica exclaimed as she stood up

Matt stared at her as he tried to stand, but struggled to follow "Jessi…"

She shook her head as she picked up her messenger bag as she put over head, resting it on her shoulder.

"You're going to give up a career, one I know for a fact you've worked hard for, for some vigilante bullshit. Imagine you get caught and they find out who you really are, that you're Daredevil, every one of your convictions, even the legitiment ones will come under the spot light. They could get over turned, people who don't deserve to be released could be released.

"Jess I.."

"And you know what, what about your friends? Nelson and Page. "You don't think they'll come after them?"

"I'm sorry I didn't mean"

"You're an idiot Murdock." She said as she opened the door.

"You're leaving." He asked

"I got to work and you need time to think about what you want." She said closing the door leaving Matt to his thoughts.

"Damn it" He muttered throwing his rose coloured glasses across the room.

Jessica exited his apartment building and just started walking. It wasn't like she had a case she was working on right now or somewhere urgent she needed to be. She just started mumbling to herself about what idiot Murdock was being. Soon enough she found herself at Luke's bar.

"Rough Day?" Commented Luke as he poured a glass of whisky infront of her.

Jess downed the shot before responding. "More like a rough week. Murdock's alive."

Luke stopped. "What!" He exclaimed a bit too loud attracting attention. He dropped his voice "Murdock is alive? How did….What!"

"Yeah" She picked up the shot and slammed it back. "He's alive I've been helping him since he woke up and yeah he's still an arsehole."

"How did you even survive a whole building fell on him?" He asked as he poured another shot for Jess and himself.

"No idea, and probably some of that mediation bullshit. But he's alive."

"You've been with him all week? You should have called I would have helped you. I can't believe you took care of him on your own."

"Took care of him" (Jess laughed) "More like trying to stop him from killing himself again by doing things too fast. Stubborn ass. He's already up and moving around and even cooked breakfast for both of us and is already back making stupid decisions."

Luke looked at her concerned. "What do you mean stupid decisions?"

Not wanting to have this conversation again she didn't respond but Luke asked her again.

"Jess, what do you mean stupid decisions."

"It's stupid, doesn't matter, we had a fight over it and I left."

"About the stupid decisions?"

"Yeah"

Luke gave her the "time to give me an explanation" look.

"Fine" Jessica gave in. "He was thinking about giving up being a lawyer and just doing the vigilante bullshit."

Luke stayed silent for a moment. "Okay, so he wants to give up the lawyer life. Why are you so upset over it."

Jess pondered over it for a moment. Why did she care, it wasn't like it was going affect her life, but I did affect Matt and she cared. She cared. About him. Shit!

Jess grabbed her bag and threw it over her body and stood up off the stool. "I gotta go" and quickly exited the bar.

Matt was pacing back and forth going over in his head about what had happened between them. She was right. About everything. He had a way, a legitimate way to help people, a career that he had worked hard for. He knew deep down that he didn't want to give up being a lawyer not just for himself but for Foggy and Karen and everything that they had built with Nelson and Murdock, but also for Jessica. This was something he didn't expect but the more time he spent with her the stronger this feeling had gotten.

He had never needed anyone before. Since going blind and losing his dad at a young age he had always found a way to do everything himself, but to be honest since working together to defeat The Hand and then waking up to find her here with him, it felt good, he wanted her to be here, to be with him.

He grabbed his glasses off the floor, grabbed his cane and headed out of his apartment building to find what he wanted.

Jess had arrived home, dropped her bag down and cracked open her laptop and started to look through her emails and tried to put her focus on anything except for Matthew Murdock who lately had been the one thing consuming all of her thoughts.

Matt had been struggling as he walked across the city to her place. He wasn't sure how long he had been walking when he stopped suddenly. He could sense her. She was trying to focus but he could sense your attention wasn't completely focused on the task she was trying to distract herself with.

He walked into the building and stepped into the elevator using the braille on the elevator buttons to select the right floor as he focused completely on her. The elevator dinged as he stepped out into the long corridor and started walking towards her door. He stopped just outside and raised his hand knocking on the door which startled her out of what she was doing.

Matt knocked again just to be sure she had heard him as he didn't hear any movement inside.

As he rested against the door frame he could hear her chair move as it slid back against the hard floor and her footsteps get louder as she walked towards the door. He pushed himself back upright wincing slightly as she threw the door open.

"Murdock! What the hell are you doing here? How the….you should be at home."

"You left." He breathed slightly heavier than he would have liked. "And you told me to think about what I wanted." He took a step towards her and he could feel her heart rate increase.

"And you here almost killing yourself along the way because"

"You"

"What."

He closed the gap between them capturing her lips softly. "You, I chose you."
