Chapter 2: Knowledge

(Later that afternoon)

Andorra was busy sitting at a fountain in the nearby park, tossing small pebbles into the water in a dejected and defeated manner, sighing heavily every few moments.

Welp, her plan to catch her parents in a ruse had backfired.

Apparently Roran was only her half brother. It seemed Daddy had been married before but his ex died of an overdose leaving him with a toddler Roran. And then they met and had her, blah blah blah...

And on top of that, her mother was supposedly an angel? Or had been, at one time. She was Fallen, now. Whatever that meant. They wouldn't explain any further other than she'd broken the rules.

Which meant she must have fucked up severely.

And the Sparda family were apparently demons.

Which, to Andorra, made a couple of things seem clear.

That's why Vergil was such an ass to her. Demons and angels go together like oil and water, no wonder they haven't gotten along since his demon woke up and matured.

She imagined it would only get worse, once her inner angel did the same thing.

She was glad for one thing.

The wedding wasn't an actual wedding. It was still a marriage, but not like any she was used to.

"Merging the powers within the two of you. It's an ancient technique, but you both have to be prepared for it. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and so forth. It will be very taxing on the both of you."

She recalled the explanation. Oh well, at least she still had a few months to prepare. Because they couldn't start until she matured, due to the insane strain the training would take on them.

"At least we don't have to pretend to like each other for the public's sake..." She murmured as she tossed another rock into the fountain pool, watching the ripples as they slowly spread across the water before being interrupted by the spray that geysered upwards.

"Yes, thank your heavens for that." She heard a voice behind her that immediately brought a curled lip scowl to her face.

"What do you want?" She asked, not even turning around to face Vergil. He should be able to tell by her tone she was annoyed he was even here.

"Nothing. I came at your parents request. They assumed, correctly, that you would be here and asked if I could confirm. Now that I have, I will leave." He explained, that disdainful voice grating on her ears. She hated how he always sounded like it was so beneath him to speak to her. Especially given how close they were just a few months prior...

Although he didn't immediately turn to walk away.

Because, somehow, he knew that she was going to say something. And as much as they annoyed each other, they did need to speak on the matter at hand.

"What do you think about all this?" She asked, scooting the rest of the pebbles into the water and turning around so that she was facing him, emerald eyes full of things he'd never seen in them before.

Fear, trepidation, confusion, anger...

This was not the Andorra he knew.

"We have a duty to uphold." Was all he said, as if that were the only answer.

"How'd I know you would say that..." She murmured, hanging her head. Only because she didn't want to look at him any longer.

Those angelic looks, those electric eyes, that regal looking spiked hair he liked to keep and maintain so much.

"That's not what you want to say, I know it and you know it. Now, I can understand your demon or whatever not liking me cuz I'm an angel or whatnot, and that's why you've been so different towards me, but-"

"That is not the reason." He interrupted her. "You are letting Hollywood supernatural stereotypes contort your way of thinking. My dislike of you has nothing to do with what you are."

The girl blinked, confused for a second.

"Then.. then why have you been such an ass to me the past few months?!" She asked, unfolding herself and getting to her feet. "Ever since winter break ended, you've just been the biggest douche bag to me and I don't know what I did to deserve it!"

"You do not?" He asked. Though it was a question, he held no hint of shock or surprise in his tone. Instead it dripped with sarcasm. Which was unusual for him. At least, to her. The old Vergil, anyways, would never have used that tone with her. "How unexpected. You never did know where the line between right and wrong was. I guess your fallen mother's morals were passed onto you."

"Say one more word against my mother and I swear I will break both of your fucking kneecaps, Vergy."

The two just locked eyes and stared at each other. They both knew...

The nickname Vergy was only used by her and it was, in the past, only used in playfulness. Nowadays, it was used to show just how pissed off she was. She meant business. If he would let, she actually would break his knees.

And all he needed to goad her on was one simple phrase. But he would save it... For now.

"As I stated before, for an intelligent person, you can be quite dense." He spoke instead, shaking his head slowly, as though a parent disappointed in their child. "That, or you simply did not see any wrong in your actions. Either way-"

"What the fuck are you talking about?" She asked. "What actions? I didn't do anything over winter break. I was out of the fucking state. Our families were supposed to vacation together, but yours pulled out last minute."

"Do not lie to me, Andorra!" He yelled at her, another very uncharacteristic trait of him, as was him reaching out and grabbing her shoulder and pulling her closer until their faces were mere inches apart.

"Ow, hey let go!" She demanded, trying to wrench her arm free, but his grip was like iron and would not let go.

"Not until you admit what you did."

"What do you mean?! I didn't do anything!" What was wrong with him?! What was he on about?! Admit what?!

With an annoyed growl he let go, pushing her backwards slightly. Though he didn't mean to be so forceful, she did stumble back a few steps, ending up back on her ass on the edge of the fountain.

"Why not speak with your current bed partner, Dawn?" He said, giving her a clue. "Or is there even any speaking going on when you're together?"

Why was his voice the one that sounded wounded? Why did he seem the most pissed off? Was he wrong? No... He knew when people were lying. And he was damned if he would stand here and let her lie straight to his face.

Andorra looked confused as hell. There was no embarrassment or shame on her face. There was no sly grin of sneakiness, no pride.

Was he wrong?

No... His source had been telling the truth.

"Dawn?" She echoed the name. "As in, Mister Senior Running back with a full ride to the best football school in the country with his all star hot cheerleader girlfriend Dawn? Why are you mad at me because of him?"

All her questions only served to anger him further.

"Do not play stupid with me! You know what I am talking about, just admit it!"

"ADMIT WHAT?!" She screamed, now at the point of frustration that all she wanted to do was scream until her throat tore and cracked. She didn't understand!

By now a small group of people had stopped and we're staring at them, some had their phones out and we're recording the altercation.

"Are you that stupid?" He asked her. "What, was his dick that good it gave you memory loss?"

It took a full five seconds for her to register what he just accused her of. And the gasps of shock and several 'oohs' from the crowd were distracting.

"Are, are you accusing me of sleeping with Dawn!?" She asked, getting back up.

"Bingo." He said. "Took you long enough to remember."

"I can't remember something that never happened." She stated, folding her arms over her chest. "Now, take it back or so help me I'll-"

"You'll what?" He demanded, stepping closer to her, and she was reminded of just how tall he really was for a teenager. Not that she was a midget, but damn she felt so small right now... "You can not best me in a physical altercation. Do not embarrass yourself further by trying. Admit what you did."

"I will not admit to something I didn't do." She said, determination not wavering. She'd be damned if she would do that.

"Hard headed little wench. Fine. Believe your own lies. You waltz around like you do not care, your deeds will catch up to you. I will not go through with anything until you have admitted your wrong doings." And with that, he turned, and strode away, leaving her flabbergasted.

"Awe, I wanted to see a fight." Someone in the crowd stated.

Andorra immediately whipped her head in their direction, causing some of the people to step back.

"Don't you people have anything better to do?!" She demanded before hurrying off after Vergil.

Only she couldn't find him.

Damn, he couldn't have gone that far already, could he? Where was he?

Why would accuse her sleeping with someone? Especially an upperclassman? And if Vergil believed it... Who else did too?

Was... Was that why people were so different towards her? She just thought it was because she'd smarted off to someone one day and the social structure in the school was very quick to change.

But what if it wasn't because of her attitude on one day?

She needed to find the source...
