Conan's first week at the Mouris was very busy.
First of all, he had come across two murders, in one week, along with two other separate cases. You'd think it's because he's now living in a detective agency, but only one of the cases had actually been from a client, with Conan coming across the others himself. (He started to think he became cursed or something.) And Conan had thought Kogoro was bad in the company daughter's kidnapping case, but that was no where close to how he was in the Okino Yoko case. He kept dismissing people as suspects or completely blaming people for the murder, with no evidence whatsoever. At least he couldn't blame Kogoro for not being able to solve the case; it was quite difficult to figure out. Well, for his first murder he thought he had done a pretty good job. (Who decides to make their suicide look like a murder, anyway; from the crime shows he's seen, it's usually the other way around.) At least it wasn't the first dead body he's seen. But, that was the first time he'd been that close or involved, so it had still been quite a shock.
During investigations, he kept on having to try and disguise the hints he was giving as just silly, childish antics. Conan was quite a reserved and quiet child, who hated attention, so this new persona he had to take on was exhausting to keep up. Edogawa Conan was supposed to be a bright, curious and social child with a bit of an overactive imagination, while actual Conan was, at least, definitely not social. He was already fed up with his new identity after just one week.
On the bright side, he'd managed to get a lead on the men in black, or what he and Agasa so call the Black Organization (which Conan thought was a stupid name, honestly). But, it wasn't too big of a lead. He'd only managed to find out that they name their members after alcohols, with the two he saw being Gin and Vodka. However, he then had to go on a time consuming escapade trying to find a bomb so he and everyone on the train wouldn't die, which left him very exhausted at the end of the day.
Second of all, along with all the cases, he also had to deal with enrolling into school. He was quite nervous about that, because, having just created a new identity, he didn't have the information or documents that a school would probably need. Thankfully, Agasa was able to take care of that. He'd made some pretty convincing fakes (Conan wondered where he learned that) and created the false information that was needed. But, fortunately, Conan was now successfully enrolled in school.. or maybe unfortunately. Conan tended to be smarter than the average seven year old, so the typical school curriculum was quite boring to him, and the homework was just plain tedious.
Along with school, came getting used to his new name. He was fine with Conan of course, but often the teachers would use the name Edogawa instead. It took some time to get used to responding to that name, and he had gotten in trouble a few times for not paying attention during class when the teachers called on him. He also had a hard time with the name Shinichi when he was with Agasa, who he had been trying to avoid, not wanting his intricate lie to be unfolded by someone who actually knew Shinichi.
Conan also had to deal with his new "friends", the so-called Detective Boys (who just so happened to be the kids who prevented him from going on the Mystery Coaster). They weren't bad kids, they were just.. way too energetic for him to handle. After school, they'd always drag him places that he had no interest in, depleting even more of his free time. (They'd somehow managed to catch some infamous Italian robber group, within the first few days of knowing them.) However, he wouldn't dare to ditch them, lest he want to suffer the wrath of Ran. When he first did, she had given him a glare that could almost rival Gin's.
While staying at the Mouri's, he learned that Shinichi was actually with Ran that day at Tropical Land. Conan wondered why he thought differently before. Usually people go with a friend or someone when they go to an amusement park, not by themselves like Conan had.
Conan was brought out of his thoughts of reminiscing about the past week when Ran called out to him from the other side of the couch, "Do you need help with your homework?"
"Huh?" Conan had done exceptional in his first few days of school and he'd breezed through all his homework so far, so why would she ask if he was struggling? Oh. He just realized he has been blankly staring at his half finished math worksheet while lost in thought.
"Oh, I'm fine, Ran.." She glared at him. "-neechan!" He quickly added.
She had been adamant that he remember to use honorifics. Since he had only been in Japan for a little while, he hasn't gotten used to them yet. After a couple days, Ran had given him an hour long lecture which had been ingrained in his mind. If Conan valued his life, he was going to use honorifics.
"Well, if you're sure." She said, giving him a concerning look.
Conan quickly got back to doing his math homework, as boring as it was. He pushed up his glasses, whose weight he had eventually gotten used to on his nose.
They had been hard to adjust to at first. He often completely forgot to wear them at times, having Ran needing to remind him about them by plainly asking where they were. He has given the excuse that he had just recently got them and wasn't used to them yet (which technically wasn't false), and that his eyesight wasn't even that bad, so the glasses didn't even make much difference. (Agasa had actually put lenses in them, with a very slight curve that wouldn't hurt his eyes, so his story was more believable.)
He was interrupted from his math when the doorbell to the agency buzzed.
"I'll get it!" Conan said as he walked over to the door, wanting a break from the tedious homework.
However, when he opened the door he was met with a face full of boxes, making him fall to the floor.
"S-sorry, little boy." The client said stretching out his hand to help. Conan noticed a peculiar mark on his finger which, from what he remembered from a show he saw a while back, meant that he was a surgeon. Well, it could probably mean something else, but Conan just decided to assume he was a doctor. He put that information in his mind for later.
"Are you okay?" The man said.
"Yeah.." He said, taking his hand.
Conan and Ran helped him pick up the boxes of what seemed to be.. only toys, and put them on the coffee table. Kogoro, after waking up from his nap, went over and sat on the opposite couch.
The client, Ogawa, then began to talk about his problem; every month, for about two years, he was sent toys and money like clockwork. Conan mostly stayed out of the conversation, only interjecting with hints to help move them along to the right direction. Ran kept giving him.. strange looks. He didn't think he'd done anything wrong; he'd used honorifics whenever needed. So, he wondered why she was looking at him like that. He paid extra attention in being good and staying out of Ran's bad side for the rest of the day. She's scary when she's mad.
After Conan suggested they go to the hospital the client worked at, they headed outside and hailed a taxi. Conan dejectedly plopped down on the car seat next to Ran. He had plans today after he finished his homework, but a case just had to come in. (Well, he couldn't be too mad because he was living at a detective agency.) He was planning on searching through the rest of Shinichi's house (who he started to refer to by his first name in his head. He started to feel.. closer to the detective after pretending to be him for a week.) Of course he made sure to keep the AC off and to not use any of the water to keep the meter the same, and made sure everything looked relatively untouched. If the men in black had come to Shinichi's house to investigate after his death wasn't announced, he didn't want them to notice anything out of place. (He still didn't know what Shinichi was actually up to. He figured he was probably in hiding somewhere, but that wasn't really any of his concern.)
The library was so large it took up the majority of his time, leaving the rest of the house mostly unsearched. But, He's already found out that Shinichi was quite arrogant and attention-seeking, the polar opposite of himself, from the many detention and referral notes he found. (But Conan could easily deal. After supposedly going through something like that, he figured Shinichi would want to keep a low profile and keep the attention away from himself. Conan was also a bit arrogant already, although he didn't really like to admit it, so that shouldn't be a problem.)
The Kudo family also seemed to be a bit.. crazy. Looking through their extensive library and archives, he found a lot of speeding tickets, all from Shinichi's mom, Yukiko, scattered around. And, from Shinichi's old kindergarten diary assignments, he'd found that his dad, Yusaku, had given him access to case files, including the photos of dead bodies, when he was just five. (There were some concerning notes from the teacher on that one.)
He'd also looked through the many case files, learning about some childhood memories Conan should have if he was supposed to be Shinichi. Apparently, Ran had almost been kidnapped by her teacher when she was in kindergarten, and would've been if not for Shinichi being suspicious of him. He'd also read into his first few cases, the one on the plane and the one in New York, and some of his most well known cases, like when he got the mayor arrested.
Shinichi also seemed to be even more of a Sherlock fan than Conan had thought. He had multiple copies of almost every book in the series, and they were used often too, if the wear and tear on them was anything to go by. Many of the books had been dog-eared and had lots of sticky notes with Shinichi's thoughts on them. The Sign of the Four seemed to be Shinichi's favorite; it was the most used and had lots of positive notes about it. Conan had never been a die-hard fan of Sherlock, but he had always been a little interested, and what better time to start reading than now. So he had previously stuffed some of the books in his backpack to read them later (which he still hasn't had a chance to thanks to the detective boys).
He'd also vaguely searched through Shinichi's room and the kitchen, and had found out a few things. There were various soccer trophies and equipment scattered in his room, giving him something new he had to learn. Shinichi also seemed to be either bad at cooking or just too lazy to do so. There wasn't much food in the fridge, and the trash consisted mostly of takeout and cup-ramen. In the kitchen, he also found lots of packages of fancy, expensive coffee, so he could assume he had a caffeine addiction and was quite rich, which was to be expected. Both his parents were rich and famous, and Shinichi's house was a very large and expensive looking mansion.
The taxi stopped, breaking Conan out of his line of thought; they'd finally arrived at the hospital. It was huge and bustling with patients. Ogawa led them towards where the painting was kept, but they were stopped by a nurse who handed the doctor a bouquet of morning glories. Apparently, along with the toys and money, he was sent those flowers on the 19th of February. That date was obviously important, so Conan made sure to remember it.
Conan then brought up the idea of checking the patient records, but Ogawa had fervently denied, saying it was against the rules. However, with little convincing from Kogoro he finally caved.
He brought them to a room with an "Authorized Personnel Only" sign on it, and nervously rushed them in. When he took out the records, Kogoro had only roughly looked through one volume before, for some reason, deciding it wasn't important and asking to look at the painting. Conan sighed. Kogoro was being stupid yet again. Well, this turned out better for Conan, as it would let him look through the records himself. He was planning to fade into the background and let everyone leave without him, but Ran had been extra observant of him today.
"You're not coming with, Conan?" Ran asked.
"Yeah, I'll just stay here." He said, looking completely innocent.
"Okay! Just don't cause any trouble." Ran said as she left and quietly closed the door.
Conan sighed in relief, thanking the universe for giving him a chance to look at classified patient records.
He rushed back towards the table and began searching. He flipped through the pages at lightning fast speeds, paying special attention to anything that happened on or around February 19th, between the year Ogawa started working at the hospital and when the presents started being sent. He found eight patients who were treated by him that had to do with that date, and was about to finish looking through the last volume when a loud shout startled him out of his search.
"Hey!"
He jumped, turning around to see Ran, who was.. arguably worse to be caught by than some hospital employee.
"R-Ran-neechan..." He stuttered out.
"You know you aren't allowed to look at those!"
"Sorry." He looked downwards dejectedly, expecting to be scolded even more.
"So, what did you find out?" Ran then asked.
"Huh?" He looked up at her, confused. He wasn't expecting that. She wasn't mad at him, and, even more, was asking for his opinion?
"A-ah.. well," He began his deduction. He explained his previous reasoning and suggested that maybe the sender was thanking him with all these presents.
"But if you can deduce that much, that's very impressive..." She said. "That's... That's impressive, Shinichi!"
"It's nothing!" He blurted out.
Then, with a jolt, he realized his mistake. He cursed his past self for conditioning him to respond to that name.
Oh, so that was why Ran had been staring at him all day.
"W-what are you talking about, Ran-neechan!" He said with a shaky voice. "My name's Conan. Co-na-n." He spelled out, trying to convince her.
Well, Conan himself didn't particularly mind if she thought he was Shinichi (he could add more to the list) but he figured the real one might. He probably wouldn't want someone he was so close to to be in danger from knowing about the Black Organization. Conan had some empathy for the detective, so he was going to try and keep Ran as ignorant of their existence as possible.
Then, to convince her further, he did the most childish thing he could think of off the top of his head.
"Wow! It's Game Man! They even have Yaiba's Adventure!" He said with an annoyingly high voice, as he ran over to the pile of toys and started playing with a random video game. He inwardly cringed at the sickeningly sweet sound of his own voice. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a confused expression on Ran's face. It seemed his embarrassing plan worked.
He took his attention away from Ran and continued playing the game. He quickly got a game over because he wasn't.. the best at playing video games. He was more of a TV watcher or book reader than anything else.
Then, he noticed that the save file already had a name, Ogino Toyoma. But, if he remembered correctly, Ogawa's son was Yuuta. He then realized that the game was pre-owned, and, after looking at the rest of the toys, they seemed to be too.
But he swore he recognized that name somewhere. Where did he..? Ogino Toyoma... Oh! That's it! The patient records!
He rushed back to the table and flipped through the pages again. And.. he found it! Ogino Toyoma, five years old. He died from appendicitis after Dr. Ogawa operated on him three years ago on February 19th.
He then realized with a jolt the true meaning of the once a month presents. Ogawa's son was in danger.
But.. what could he do about it? He was just a child. No one would believe him. Well, if he explained himself, maybe... He does have good reasoning.
What would Shinichi do?
He'd probably do anything he could to save the boy, without any thought. Conan himself was definitely more.. hesitant. But he was trying to be Shinichi, and what's the worst that could happen?
So, it was decided.
"Ran-neechan!" He shouted. "Bring Dr. Ogawa here!"
"Huh?"
"Hurry! There's no time!"
"O-okay!" She said and ran out the door.
On their way to the kindergarten, they found Yuuta. He was playing with a shady looking man, wearing sunglasses and a large coat. They then noticed he had a knife hidden behind his back, ready to stab the boy. Conan frantically looked around, looking for anything that could help save Yuuta. There was a group of kids playing soccer close by.
That could work. Conan crouched down and activated his new kick-enhancing shoes made by the Professor (which he still had no idea how they worked. Agasa had given him some sort of vague explanation, saying it manipulated his muscles and used pressure points to make his legs stronger, but Conan wondered if he had secret magical powers or something instead, because that sounded like bullshit.)
He rushed over to the kids, jumped upside-down in the air, and kicked the ball as hard as he could, trying his best to aim towards where the man was. It hit him straight in the legs, knocking him over. Well, that wasn't exactly where he was aiming; he wanted to hit the knife out of his hand, but that was good enough.
He silently thanked Agasa for making him such powerful shoes. (He could've at least warned him though; when he first got them, he almost killed one of his poor classmates while testing out the shoes during a school soccer game.)
But, honestly, Agasa wasn't as bad an inventor as Shinichi had cracked him up to be. Well yeah, some of his inventions weren't exactly.. up to par, and seemed to to be as susceptible to explosion as some sort of volatile chemical. But, many of his inventions were very good. Conan is still boggled at how he managed to create a voice changer, a watch with a hidden tranquilizer dart (which he's pretty sure isn't even legal), and the shoes in such a short amount of time. Like, the bow tie could mimic any, any voice at all, with such little mechanics. And, it also seemed to mask his own voice; he had to raise his voice quite a lot for some deductions but he still couldn't hear it over Kogoro's.
Anyways, after the man had been stopped, they rushed over to the scene. He said that he felt as if Ogawa had killed his son, not trying hard enough to save him, and wanted him to feel the same pain, which Conan thought was quite stupid. It was obvious that there was nothing they could do by the time he was brought to the hospital, but he guessed the man was just blindsided by grief.
Ogawa had decided to forgive him and let him go, which was definitely odd. He literally just tried to kill his son, but whatever. Conan didn't particularly mind. He didn't want to go through a whole police questioning anyway.
Ogawa thanked Kogoro and started heading home with his son. Kogoro, Ran, and Conan also headed off.
Kogoro had brought up, "But.. I wonder why he waited so long?"
"He was probably waiting until Yuuta turned five, like when his own son died." Conan dryly answered.
"Oh. Yeah, makes sense."
"Wow! An impressive deduction as usual." Ran said sarcastically, glaring at Conan.
Oh, right. She still thought he was Shinichi. Maybe he should do something about that.
"Ah-!" He suddenly blurted. "I just remembered. I have.. something.. to do." He turned around and ran off towards Agasa's house. "Bye!" He shouted back.
When he got there, the sun had already set, making it officially night. Conan opened the door and walked straight over to Agasa, who was leaned over working on putting together some sort of contraption.
"Oh, Shinichi! What are you doing here so late." Agasa looked up from his work.
He was about to tell him how Ran was suspecting he was Shinichi and ask him to call her as him using the bow tie, but suddenly had a moment of empathy towards the real one.
"A-ah... I just wanted to say.. the shoes you made worked really well!"
He realized that Shinichi may want to make Ran think he died or mysteriously appeared to keep her safe. He didn't want to be the one to let Ran know Shinichi was still alive if he could help it. He'd leave that to him.
"I stopped a criminal with them just now." He continued.
"That's good." Agasa replied. "Are you going to spend some time in your house again." He gave him a concerned look.
"No, it's too late. I should probably head back soon."
"Oh, yeah. I'm sure you're.. going through a lot right now.. but, I don't think you should spend much time over there."
Oh. Of course he would think he's grieving his old life or something.
"Wouldn't those guys come looking for you once they realized your death was unconfirmed?"
"Oh, don't worry!" He reassured. "I've been careful to leave no evidence that I was even there. And I don't think anyone's even been there yet."
He wouldn't let Agasa stop him from his search. He still had a fair bit of the house left.
"Well.. if you're sure..."
"Anyways!" He stopped the conversation. "I should probably get going or Ran'll get worried."
"Alright."
He turned and went out the door, heading back to the detective agency.
Conan quietly opened the door, slowly peeking inside. He hoped to avoid Ran, at least for tonight, but she had other plans.
"Welcome home, Conan-kun!" She greeted cheerfully, already waiting for him in the office.
He inwardly grimaced. It seemed she wasn't going to let him go.
"H-hi, Ran-neechan." He carefully greeted back.
"Where's uncle?" He asked
"He's already asleep. You should get to bet too; it's pretty late."
Hmm... She was planning something.
"Ah!" She suddenly said. "I left my school book on the table. Sorry, could you get it?"
"Uh.. sure." He didn't see any underhanded purpose.
He headed over to the table and picked out a copy of Jane Eyre, which he remembered seeing on Shinichi's desk, among various other books. He walked over to Ran.
"Here." He said holding it out.
Ran suddenly slammed the door shut, startling Conan.
"How did you know that was the book I was reading for school?" She asked with a sly grin.
Shit! How could he miss that?
"W-well, I.. uh..." He stammered. "I saw you reading it!" He lied.
"No you didn't." Ran deflected. "There were other books on the table, and I only ever read that book at school and in my room, where you have never been!"
"O-oh.. I uh.. i-it was the only that looked like it was for school!"
"Don't lie!" She shouted. "It looks the same as the other books. The only way you'd know is if you went to the same high school class as me!"
"You're Shinichi, aren't you!" She yelled. "Admit it!"
"W-well.. y-you see..."
"Fess up, Shinichi!"
Conan gave up. If she was so adamant about it, then he'll just tell her. It was Shinichi's problem anyway, not his.
But then the phone rang.
"Ph-phone." He meekly pointed out.
"Just let it ring." She growled.
"B-but..."
"Ugh! Fine, it's annoying!" She marched over to the desk and yanked out the phone.
"Mouri detective agenc-" She suddenly stopped.
After a few seconds, she yelled out, "Sh-Shinichi!?"
Wait, Shinichi!? Conan looked at her, surprised. Well, wasn't that convenient.
Ran whipped around to look at Conan. "B-but, I thought you were..." She stammered out with confusion written on her face.
After a few seconds of staring at Conan, with Shinichi presumably talking on the other end, a softer more relieved look fell over Ran.
"I must be stupid or something!" She exclaimed. "It seems I was a little confused. ...Oh it's nothing, don't worry about it. Anyways, Shinichi-" She said, continuing the conversation.
Conan sighed in relief. Crisis averted.
He quietly sneaked out the door and went to his and Kogoro's room, leaving Ran to talk with Shinichi.
Shinichi had gotten back to Ran far earlier than expected. He actually thought he wouldn't at all. Conan thought it would be a better idea to not contact anyone and just let them assume he's died or disappeared, rather than be in some sort of limbo with people thinking you're alive and others thinking you're dead.
Well, it was Shinichi's decision, not his.
Ugh, Conan would have to explain all this to Agasa, wouldn't he. Well, that was something the future him would have to deal with.
