So! Just to clarify, the story will diverge from the main canon, especially after vol 3. Because one: Spoilers, and two: Spoilers, and three: RT ruined RWBY after vol 4, and in order to make Subaru's contributions and existence matter, I have take it upon myself to change the canon, just a bit.
Vivid visions are the only things Subaru can see, accompanied by hushes and muffled voices with incomprehensible meaning. He can feel the sadness and anguish of the voices he heard, as he lay dormant in a colorless void that surrounds him like a raging but somewhat streamlined storm of memories, if you can call it that. He regretted leaving them behind, worried of their safety as he is stuck here in this new world.
He wondered what would happen to them when they found out that he and his spirit went missing. At this point, that would be a mystery with an unanswerable question, as the river of the future splits into an infinite and endless stream. He is worried for them, yet cannot do anything. He is powerless, weak and pathetic.
Sorrow, regret, and worry. Those words repeat inside his mind as he lay there in the ocean of dreams.
Subaru: I feel pathetic.
And with those words, his real self began to wake up, as the muffled deep whistling became louder and clearer, vanquishing the other voices he heard inside his head, and the colorless raging storm being replaced by an ever expanding light in front of his eyes. Natsuki Subaru had decided to pause his deep pondering slumber right there, for now.
He awakened his eyes to the sight of the girl he came to know as Ruby Rose, whistling loudly and energetically waking up her teammates. As he lay there on a borrowed blanket he used as a makeshift futon, he switched his focus towards Beatrice sleeping beside him, hugging him tightly as she tried to sleep peacefully, trying to ignore the annoying screech of Ruby's whistle. No one really questioned her action here, as she just said to them "To keep Betty's Subaru from having terrible nightmares, I suppose!" And no one attempted to argue from then on.
Ruby: Wake up! Time to get ready! First class is about to start in an hour!
Ruby kept up being annoying and forcefully waking up everyone, Weiss was the first to get ready as she exited the bathroom already in her uniform while Blake was waiting by the door. Yang however, she is still sleeping, scratching her belly even.
Subaru decided to ignore her antics and focused on waking up his Beako with his own way.
Beatrice: Kyaaa!
By stretching her hair drills apart of course. It is an effective strategy as it energized her immediately after waking up. Subaru slyly smiled upon his success, trying to hide the fact that he is currently feeling a bit down and worried today.
Beatrice: Subaru, that is harassment, I suppose!
She began to try and fail adorably at hitting him as Subaru stood up, head patted her, and waited by the door to the bathroom, leaving the pouting Beatrice on the makeshift futon. Blake, who was second at exiting the bathroom, noticed him there, and noticed the pouting Beako as well.
Blake: What happened?
Subaru: It's nothing special! Just our daily ritual of drill-hair pulling!
He slyly smiled once again, earning a confused look from her as he entered the bathroom, uniform in tow which he picked up from a chair near him. Blake went on to question his spirit partner about that "daily ritual", but before she could ask, the loli already answered.
Beatrice: It is not true, in fact! Subaru should apologize, I suppose!
Yang: Shut up you drill-haired loli! I'm trying to sleep!
Beatrice: You shut up, in fact! Wake up, I suppose! Even Betty's Subaru is better than you!
Ruby: She's right Yang, wake up before you pass out again!
Yang groaned as she sat up and scratched her messy hair, adding a yawn in the process as she went to the door and picked up her uniform to get ready. Subaru was almost done with the preparations, only needing to practice his smile a little, which worried Yang a little who caught him doing such an act. Who would practice such a trivial thing like that?
She sighed and decided to ignore it for now. She needs to get ready or her little sister will scold him again.
Yang: *Damn that whistle she had*
The first class Subaru had arrived in is what came to be known by him as "Combat Class" taught by Professor Goodwitch. His first impressions of her lectures was that they were very detailed and had some very clear effort put into them, so that the complicated learning material wasn't going to fall on deaf ears, and on the plus side he does understand at least some of the more advanced material taught here. He even took some notes in order to learn something from this, such as how to deliver a proper combination attack and how to keep being mobile against larger or slower but stronger opponents, all that kind of stuff. For Beatrice however, he would guess that hand to hand combat and the like is not to her interest, she is a spellcaster after all.
Speaking of magic, Subaru is currently taking some notes regarding aura as she is currently reviewing said material. He can't believe how weird and unique of a concept it is for him to learn this, even Beatrice was quite surprised and interested. The concept of a sort of magical barrier procured from the very soul of an individual as a defense mechanism, as he understood it at least, is very intriguing and will definitely be beneficial. He would need to find a way on how he could activate this, it may save him from using EMM so many times in this unknown world.
Currently he is sitting behind team RWBY on a higher row, next to his Beatrice of course, who is paying attention for the sake of it. The team he is staying with right now are quite a contrast for each member. Ruby is energetic and does not like to pay attention to lessons that are not interesting to her, reminding him a lot of Garfiel. Weiss is quite the opposite, paying attention thoroughly and diligently, a model student definitely. Yang and Blake are the ones he can call "normal" in their team, their traits are quite subtle, at least to him.
For who is sitting next to, is a single white haired girl, similar to Weiss in its hair length, though totally not looking like her either since she has a different eye colour and body structure. To him, she is very much so fully developed body-wise. But right now, his first impressions just from sitting next to her can make him feel cold, and intimidated. He knows that this girl is not to be messed with. Though still he kept on eyeing her just to make sure, a force of habit after dying to an assassin so many times.
Beatrice: Subaru, why aren't you paying attention to class, I suppose?
Beatrice's sudden intrusion alerted him by surprise, him straightening his gaze to the lesson immediately as to not get caught. However, because of her intrusion the white haired girl noticed them, though she still kept quiet about it and continued to watch the lecture given by Professor Goodwitch. Her eyes glancing ever so slightly to the boy that is noting down the lessons and material, in an unknown language. Her eyes immediately widen at the sight, and she is urging herself to ask what he is writing.
But in a quick fashion, her attempt at ignoring it fails. She nudged his shoulder, taking away Subaru's attention from class to her.
Subaru: Yes?
Girl: What are those symbols that you write in?
Subaru quickly glanced over his notes and grew beet red, did he just write in lugunican? From the looks of it, it is unfortunately true. Beatrice taking notice as well as Subaru began to panic, though herself did not really understand why. Does this mean this world she is now in does not have the same language? It is possible, but it's her first time being in another world, so it's still a surprise even to her.
Girl: Well, are you going to answer?
She continued her advance in questioning him, pressuring the panicking Subaru to answer at least something. Her cold and intimidating aura and tone only reinforced her question, which sounds like a demand to most people here. Subaru gazed at her, still panicking.
Subaru: T-th...Uhhh..
The girl only hummed in frustration, he is only stuttering, clearly panicking, and somewhat scared of her. No, scratch that, definitely scared. So she decided to retreat for now, before suddenly they were interrupted by the teacher below them. Professor Glynda Goodwitch, staring up towards their brief exchange, a stern look can be seen on her face as the rest of the class also begins to look at the direction she is looking at.
Glynda: Mr. Natsuki, Ms. Indigo, what is it that you are discussing that it managed to interrupt the lesson?
The girl, known to Subaru currently as Indigo, is internally panicking and decided to sit away from him for the moment. Fortunately for Subaru, that means he would not need to answer her question. But, he is unfortunately unlucky enough to be questioned by an arguably more terrifying woman in this very class. Panic began to reawaken within him after a brief sigh of relief.
After Professor Goodwitch's class was finished, it was time for the second activity to commence, lunch time. Hundreds of students are chattering with each other and eating their meals after suffering through what is called studying. The more diligent students use this as an opportunity to both eat and review some material, while others tend to hang out and talk about the things that are not related to those lessons they have learned. Even in this other world, Subaru felt like he was at home, it felt familiar, but still it is not the same.
He is worried and afraid, but did not show it publicly. Only quietly eating and staring at the crowd in the dining hall. Beatrice is right beside him, and usually he will not ignore her, but right now he is keeping quiet, trying to. The team he is staying with are both eating and chatting together, but still he kept silent and ignored them as he thought about his dream that morning.
Is it possible that he can return to his old friends? Are they worried sick that he and Beatrice are missing? What would happen if he were not with them? What would happen if they were not with him? All of the questions inside his mind never to answered. But one thing is certain, he is homesick.
He wonders how Beatrice can be so...normal right now. This was her first time in another world, she should be nervous! Yet she is speaking to the people around her, albeit irritatingly, only answering some questions and throwing insults in between. She's a rude little girl, but she is social nonetheless. Why can't he be more like her right now? He was easily the most energetic in the camp. Must've been the fact that he is a very lonely person, even though he was surrounded by people that he held dear. Now those people, the pillars of support that kept him from being in despair are gone, with only one left right beside him.
He looked towards her, the drill hair curls bobbing about as it was pulled by the blonde girl, Yang, out of annoyance of her constant insults. She looked cute, always so wise yet so naive. Almost like a little sister, no, definitely a little sister. Beatrice is the only one he has left now. After pondering about his worry and how to solve his apparent loneliness and despair, he concluded one thing out of many problems he is facing internally as of this time.
He has to protect her from harm, his Beako. She is the only one that he had right beside him, and he will make sure to hold her dear. He remembered that last loop where she begged him for her to be his number one. Even though Emilia is still in that spot, with the blue haired girl as the second, he began to ponder whether he should temporarily place his favorite spirit as number one for now. After all, he's not sure if he can actually return to his comrades back home.
Subaru: They must've been worried sick...
Then suddenly, he felt the sleeve of his uniform being pulled. The drill-haired loli Beatrice, looking at him with worried eyes, even the four girls that made team RWBY were concerned too. Did he accidentally reveal his brooding self? Should he damage control or should he just reveal the truth? But after thinking about it, Beatrice must've been ignoring him all this time to maintain privacy, not the vice versa. She actually cared about him to that level, just like a little sister.
Beatrice: Subaru, what's wrong I suppose?
The look of his contracted spirit's face began to switch from a concerned face to a more comforting one, trying to ease him of his worry and despair as her small hand that was pulling his sleeve was caressing his back. She must've known that he is going through a tough time. After all, no human can live a normal life separated from the norm they had gone used to. Even a spirit knows that.
Subaru: It's just…
Subaru thought hard about his next response, he doesn't want his Beako to be worried further.
Subaru: How should I say it…
None of the girls from the four girl team decided to interrupt. Instead, they are just slowly finishing their meals while glancing from time to time. Even they know what he is going through, at least a semblance of it.
Beatrice: Do you want us to talk about it in private, I suppose?
Subaru looked towards her with surprised eyes. Smiling at hearing her guess of what he wants.
Subaru: Y-yeah, probably. I don't want to worry you all of a sudden!
He began to place his hand upon her head, giving her a head pat she deserves. She accepted it, of course. It is a tradition they have practiced thousands of times.
Subaru: But, thanks Beako, for worrying about me. I'm fine, for now..
Those last words he uttered under his breath. But, it was enough for Beatrice to be finally smiling again, snuggling close to him. The four girls, especially Yang, were smiling at the sight of the two being like siblings.
However, due to the fact that their concerns have passed by, the team leader of RWBY, Ruby Rose, had decided to change the topic at hand. Her hands slamming the table, gaining the attention of the rest of the team plus two who had been recently having their moment together.
Ruby: So! Topic change!
All of them looked at her pausing, confused as to what's going on.
Weiss: What is it?
Blake hummed, thinking of what to talk about. At a moment's notice her cat ears that are hidden with a bow on her head, perking up as she raised her finger.
Ruby: No Blake, the tuna supply is not running out, no shopping spree at the fish market!
Her ears began to perk down again as the team leader shut her attempt down. Today is not the day she would get that Special Salmon Sashimi at the fish market.
Weiss: Oh, I know! We should refill our dust supply! It's a great opportunity to actually invite these two to Vale too!
Weiss gestured her arms towards the two, and the mention of dust interested both of them at the same time as well.
Subaru: Dust? The saw dust kind or the mostly dried human skin kind?
Yang: You don't know about dust!?
Subaru: I have two months plus experience of being a butler! I know what they are! It's hard to not know them when you are forced to indulge in and clean them!
Beatrice sighed as she began a response to correct her partner.
Beatrice: Subaru, I think she's referring to this land's equivalent magic crystals, I suppose. The ones that can hold great spirits, in fact!
Subaru: That is a weird name for an object you guys should've told me sooner about!
Beatrice sighed once again, but smiling at the end of it. At least her contractor is back to being himself again.
Beatrice: How about we visit the library I heard about after this "school", I suppose? We may learn something or two about this place.
He head patted her again, a logical solution to the problem at hand. But he soon realized another problem.
Subaru: If you say so, Beako. But are you sure? You may not understand the language here you know!?
She huffed and puffed up her chest in a prideful stance.
Beatrice: I'm a great spirit, I can understand anything, I suppose!
Yang: Oh please, you're just a kid you pipsqueak! Can't even handle hot sauce!
Yang laughed her ass off as Beatrice squealed in anger trying to reach for her ears in retaliation. Subaru and the rest only smiled it off as they joked around for the rest of the lunch time period they have at this time. The first day at Beacon Academy for Subaru and Beatrice went off fine after that.
