Two chapters in one day? How unusual!

I watched JP3 yesterday, so I've been inspired. We get into actually movie events in this chapter and you'll even get to see a bit of the signature Grant fiery temper. Enjoy!

Emily stepped in front of her bathroom mirror and straightened her suit jacket. It was June 12th, and the speech she'd scheduled with Claire was in roughly ten minutes.

The paleontologist fixed the collar of her white button up shirt and grabbed her satchel, stuffing her phone inside as she headed for the door. She slipped into her light gray flats, the same color as her jacket and pants.

By 8:00, Emily was standing just off the stage in the Innovation Center, notes in hand. Mr. Buffett, a park investor, had just finished a short introduction speech and said, "For our first speaker, the park's one and only consulting paleontologist. Please welcome Dr. Emily Grant!"

The auditorium crowd clapped and cheered far louder than they had for Mr. Buffett, and Emily thought she knew why. But she just fixed a pleasant smile on her face and stepped on stage.

The applause only increased as she walked across to the podium and spoke into the microphone, "Thank you Mr. Buffett, for the warm welcome."

He only nodded and walked off the stage. Emily gave the crowd a moment to calm down and set her notes on the podium.

And with a deep breath, she began.

"Two years ago, before I accepted this job, I spent my time outside, digging up 65-million-year-old dinosaur bones. And now I get to see and work with their living counterparts every day. If you'd told me this at the age of nine, I would've told you you were crazy and gone back to my plastic dinosaur toys."

"For most of you, that idea is not as far fetched as I once thought it was. However, being a paleontologist, it's hard to forget where these creatures came from, and how Jurassic World would not have gotten very far without all of the research and excavation behind it."

"It all started when John Hammond's workers excavated that first piece of amber…"

Twenty minutes later, Emily pulled her hair up into a bun in the public bathroom, tourists crowded around her, and shouldered her satchel.

Her speech had been a huge success and given that it was only the third speech she'd ever given at Jurassic World, Emily was pretty happy with it. Unsurprisingly, she'd had a plethora of Jurassic Park related questions, but as per usual, she'd just politely turned them down.

Emily worked her way out of the bathroom and down the hallway to the employee exit, which led to the employee parking lot. Stepping out into the early morning sunshine, heat and humidity of Isla Nublar, she was glad she'd changed into a green tank top, green flannel and jean shorts.

Emily made her way to her jeep, started it and backed out of her spot. In less than a minute, the jungle was speeding by, and she took the turn to the raptor paddock. Parking, she cracked her jeep's windows open a little and turned off the car, putting on her hat as she got out.

Barry and Lizzy waved at her from the catwalk, Owen going into the holding cage. And to Emily's great disappointment, Hoskins was behind him. The paleontologist rolled her eyes and walked to the base of the catwalk, avoiding Hoskins by walking up the metal stairs to meet Barry and Lizzy.

Lizzy greeted her with a grin, "How'd your speech go?"

"Great, minus the plethora of Jurassic Park questions."

Barry laughed, walking past Emily and down the stairs, "You should have come to expect those."

"You'd think I-"

Emily was cut off by one of the workers yelling, "Pig lose! Pig lose!"

Lizzy just muttered, "Uh oh," and hurried back up the catwalk, Emily at her heels.

Which was when Emily heard the scream of the man as he fell off the catwalk. The raptors immediately turned towards the noise and screeched. The noise reached Emily's ears and it took all of her willpower not to flinch. God, she heard those screeches in her nightmares, in her memories. Her hands found the railing of the catwalk as Owen ran out into the cage, shouting at ACU to hold their fire.

He's going to die; he's going to die-

Emily cut off her own thoughts, knees shaking and knuckles white.

Owen simply raised his hands, using them to keep the raptors at bay. To Emily's relief, they listened, and Barry helped the man who had fallen out of the cage.

But Owen's brief moment of control didn't last long, and Blue sank down, raising her claws. Unbidden, a memory came back to Emily, of a raptor doing the same thing before it leaped onto the T-Rex in the visitor's center at Jurassic Park.

"Are you crazy?!" Barry snapped her out of it by yelling at Owen, who just responded with,

"Just trust me."

Emily barely processed as Barry hit a button and started closing the gate to the enclosure. Her breathing was quick, Delta was sinking into the attack stance now, Charlie would probably follow.

The gate kept lowering, and just before it closed, Owen rolled backward and under it. The four raptors slammed against the bars, snarling and Emily let out a shaky breath.

Turning, Emily hurried down the stairs, and over to Owen. Now that he was out of the cage, and she knew he was fine, Emily could feel her fear being joined by anger. The paleontologist marched up to Owen, "Do not ever do that again Owen Grady!"

Owen turned to face her, wryly saying, "I don't plan to."

"I mean it! Do you even realize how dangerous that was, Owen?!" Emily paused for a breath, "You could've been killed!"

Owen's wry smile had vanished, "Hey, I won't do it again. And I'm fine. You, on the other hand, look like you've seen a ghost."

Emily scoffed, "I'm not the one who was just in a cage with some of the most dangerous animals on the planet." But Owen was right, Emily felt like she had seen a ghost, a ghost of her past. Hearing the raptors hunting like that, seeing them hunt like that… It had brought her more than just panic.

Lizzy put a hand on Emily's shoulder, "Why don't you go sit in the office, get some water and calm down."

Emily just let Lizzy steer her towards the office, wiping her clammy hands on her shorts.

Once inside, Lizzy handed her a bottle of water, "I know that scared you, but Owen is fine, and nobody was hurt."

"Right…"

Lizzy just smiled slightly and headed for the door, "Take all the time you need. And feel free to bother Owen about how stupid that was."

Emily managed a grin, "Oh I will." Lizzy left the office, leaving Emily to her thoughts. But the assistant raptor trainer was right. Owen was safe, and nobody had been hurt.

Emily slapped her forearm, killing the mosquito that had just landed there. She wiped her hand on her shorts and grabbed her Coca-Cola, taking a swig in an attempt to combat the heat.

Next to her, Lizzy tipped her head back, "Why does it have to be so hot…?"

"Don't forget the humidity," Owen called over his shoulder from where he was in the middle of repairing his Triumph Scrambler.

"Ugh, don't remind me."

Emily just chuckled. Her panic and fear from earlier were mostly gone, but she was still a little shaky and would definitely be having nightmares tonight. Still, she had to admit, what Owen had done was impressive. Foolish, but impressive.

The paleontologist took another drink and adjusted her fedora, so it shaded more of her face.

"I need to get one of those," Lizzy said before finishing the last of her Coke.

"Hmm?" Emily set down her bottle.

"A hat. I keep forgetting to put sunscreen on my face."

Owen set down his wrench, "That sounds like a personal problem Lizzy."

Lizzy stuck her tongue out at him, and Emily laughed, rolling her eyes. They all sat there, Owen working on his motorcycle, just enjoying each other's company and the companionable silence, which was only punctuated by the occasional distant dinosaur call.

That is, until the sound of car tires on gravel reached their ears.

Emily set her bottle down on the step beside her and turned to look at the road. An immaculate white coupé pulled up and the driver's door opened to reveal Claire Dearing, dressed in all white.

Emily sighed as Lizzy muttered, "Well this should be interesting."

Claire walked over, somehow managing to not trip on the uneven ground, despite her heeled shoes, "Mr. Grady, Ms. Greene, Dr. Grant, I need you to come take a look at something."

Owen set down a part from his motorcycle, "Why are you calling me Mr. Grady?"

Emily rolled her eyes.

"Owen." Claire gestured with her hands, then added, "If you're not too busy."

'I'm pretty busy."

Claire just continued, "We have an attraction."

"That's not what you said the last time I saw you." Owen stood up, and turned to face Claire, walking towards her.

"I'm talking about the dinosaurs Mr. Grady."

"Owen."

"A new species," Claire ducked to the side, swatting at a fly, "we've made."

Owen grabbed the fly out of the air and Claire flashed him an appreciative smile. He then walked toward his bungalow, "You just went and made a new dinosaur?"

"Yeah, it's, uh, kinda what we do here. The exhibit opens to the public in three weeks and Mr. Masrani wanted me to consult with you."

Owen raised his eyebrows, "You wanna consult here, or in my bungalow?"

"That's not funny."

Owen laughed a little, "It's a little funny." He took the front steps two at a time, squeezing past Emily and Lizzy.

"We'd like you to evaluate the paddock for vulnerabilities."

"Why me?"

"Well, Dr. Grant is always over critical of these things and is our consulting paleontologist, and I guess since Mr. Masrani thinks since you and Ms. Greene able to control the raptors…" Claire mounted the steps after Owen.

"See, it's all about control with you." Owen turned back around and stepped up in front of Claire.

Lizzy added, "We don't control the raptors, it's a relationship."

"It's based on mutual respect. That's why you and I never had a second date," Owen twisted a tool in his hands and went back down steps to his bike.

"Excuse me, I never wanted a second date," Claire sounded offended.

Emily stood up, "As amusing as this is, what is this dinosaur?"

"The make-up of the asset would be classified until you've looked over the paddock."

"The asset? These are living creatures Ms. Dearing," Lizzy stood up next to Emily.

Claire watched the three of them, "I'm fully aware they're alive."

Emily stepped in, "We'll look over your paddock, but we need to be assured of a few things."

"And what would those be Dr. Grant?"

"What this thing is. And if we identify an issue, it needs to be remedied."

Claire nodded, "I can arrange for both of those."

Owen set down his tool, "When are we looking over this paddock?"

Claire came down the steps and stopped in front of Owen, "Right now. And I suggest you change your shirt, it's sensitive to smell."

Lizzy snorted a laugh as Claire returned to her coupé.

Owen called after Claire, "I'll change it then," and promptly pulled off his shirt and mounted the steps to his bungalow, ducking inside.

Emily sighed in exasperation, drank the last of her Coke and followed Lizzy to Claire's coupé. As Owen finally joined them and they pulled away, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that there was something about this 'asset' that Claire wasn't telling them.

I hope you can forgive me for getting rid of some of Owen's more explicit jokes and replacing it with him just pulling off his shirt when he knows Claire can see him do so.

I had a lot of fun writing this chapter, and I hope you liked it.

Please review, it really does help with motivation!
