Chapter 2
Life and Death
The car went tumbling down the hill. Aang regained consciousness as the car rolled down at a dangerous speed and was stopped abruptly when it was slammed into a tree. It was the longest three minutes of his life.
He pulled his keys from his pocket and used the jagged edge to cut himself free from the seatbelt. He looked at Suki, who was completely unresponsive. He tried opening the door before slamming into it, forcing it open. The door fell off its hinges.
He got out and spent a few minutes pushing the car back into an upright position.
After wiping the sweat off him, he went and opened Suki's door with more aggravation than opening his own. The driver's side was deformed and had a massive dent. The car was totaled, but the driver's side was hit. He reached his hand in and released Suki's belt and pulled her out of the car.
He was exhausted.
He laid her on the ground, wiped the blood off her head and put pressure on the wound.
He breathed shakily, then finally felt for a pulse.
He put his fingers on her neck and gasped.
'No no no no, she can't be-' he thought as he panicked. He couldn't feel anything.
Then he laid his head on her chest. He exhaled with a sigh of relief. He heard a heartbeat, but it was weak.
He began giving her CPR, pushing her chest down to pump her blood for her, aiding her in her weakened state.
'...28 … 29 … 30' he thought to himself. He then repositioned his head over hers.
He opened her mouth, closed his eyes and put his lips on hers and breathed for her. He was watching her chest rise and fall as he did when he remembered that she was in the midst of telling him something.
He continued keeping her alive, but he was fatiguing quickly.
"...7 … 8 … nin-" he said aloud as he slowed down.
She woke up, coughing up blood and gasping for air.
"SUKI!"
She grabbed his shirt and pulled herself up to him. He helped her up and wiped her face.
"Suki, can you talk?" Aang asked desperately.
She coughed up a clot and inhaled deeply.
"A-Aang?" she said, her voice rough. Aang dialed 9-1-1, then pulled Suki into a hug.
They sat and waited in one another's arms, keeping warm until help came. For the next hour they waited, while both cried from the trauma and pain they were in.
Aang ripped a piece of his shirt and made it a bandage for Suki's head wound.
When help finally came, they were hoisted out and rushed to the hospital.
Aang was sad to hear Suki got the worst of it. She was rushed into surgery for head trauma, in addition to her broken arm, leg and two fractured ribs, while he only had a broken wrist and a mild concussion.
He was taken to a room. He laid in the bed for the next eight hours in a cold sweat, waiting for Suki to be out of surgery.
His mother showed up, as well as Suki's parents. Jinora, his mother, walked into the room and hugged her son tightly.
"Aang, are you okay? We were so worried, and then we got the call-" Jinora said in a still worried voice. She was crying.
"Mom, I'm fine, really. Where's Suki? Are her parents here?" He was really worried.
"Do you want to see her?" she asked softly. Aang nodded.
She helped him into a wheelchair and pushed him to Suki's room where he was met by her parents.
As her mother came up to him, he saw Suki. He was devastated, seeing her lay there helplessly hooked up to machines keeping her alive.
Her mother knelt down to Aang's level and hugged him.
"Thank you for saving my baby," she said, her eyes full of tears. She let him go. Suki's dad was less than happy.
"Why did you guys get hit?" He interrogated.
"I- I don't k-know?" Aang stuttered. Her dad approached him.
"WHAT were you doing when you got hit?" He spat. Aang was panicking.
"N-nothing s-s-sir.. we just- just- jus-"
His wife stepped in, stopping her husband from coming at a hyperventilating Aang.
Jinora rolled Aang back to his room, and then he heard Suki's parents start fighting and broke down.
They got back to the room and Aang crawled into bed. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.
He could still hear the fighting from his room and eventually her parents were escorted out of the hospital. His mother left when she saw him asleep, even though he woke up an hour after closing his eyes. When he woke up, he asked to stay in Suki's room.
He waited alone in there for the night, falling asleep in the chair. Later the next day, a new visitor came.
"Katara?" He asked. She looked at him sadly.
"Aang, what happened? You weren't at school today and then I heard there was a crash-" she sat in a chair next to him. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, but no," he replied with obvious pain. Hesitantly, she asked.
"Do you, like, like her?" He buried his face in his hands. "Oh Aang- i'm sure she's gonna be fine."
He said nothing.
Three hours passed, Katara had fallen asleep while Aang stayed up.
He noticed Suki beginning to move a bit, so he got up and limped to the call button. The nurse came and tried to bring Aang back to his room but he wouldn't leave. Katara went to Aangs room and waited.
They ran tests on her to make sure she was okay from the surgery. Forty-five minutes later, the two were alone. They looked at each other and laughed and cried.
"Hey Aang, c'mere," she said, then coughed. "I didnt finish what I was saying before". Aang walked over towards her, leaning on the bed rail.
"Closer" she whispered.
He leaned closer and she grabbed his head, pulling him towards her lips and kissed him. Aang was red in the face, but he kissed her back.
"I never got to sat that I like you" she told him after they let each other go.
"Yeah, well I like you too," he said with a newfound confidence. She blushed.
"So does that mean we're-"
"I think so-" he replied. "I should head to my room before…"
She pouted.
He blew her a kiss and walked out, back to his room.
"Someones in a good mood" Katara said. Aang blushed. "She's okay?" she asked.
"Mhmm" he replied. He then got into bed and laid down. They all fell asleep again.
When Aang woke up on the next day, he was left with a note.
'Hey Aang,
Sorry I had to run. The doctors said that they'd be discharging you tomorrow morning, and Suki in a few weeks. I left my number, we should hang out sometime. Which reminds me, I saw a flyer for a Battle of the Bands at school the other day and well- Anyway, just text me later and i'll tell you. Cya in school, loverboy.
-Kat'
His mother showed up in his room again with his doctor to discharge him, but he chose to remain as a visitor to stay with Suki. He was unsure if her parents were coming back to visit her today.
He entered her room and took a chair next to her bed. She looked a lot more comfortable now that she was in a new room. He sat next to her, took her hand and they talked the whole day while watching television.
Suki's mother came later in the day and offered to drive Aang home but Sokka and Katara showed up again.
"Need a ride?" Sokka asked.
"Sure" Aang replied, following Sokka and Katara to the car.
They got in and Sokka drove off.
"So, what was that thing you were telling me about?" Aang asked.
"Oh, well, I saw the flyer and thought maybe you'd want to start a band for it. I think you'd do really well," Katara answered.
"Yeah but, I'm like, the only musician like that I know." Aang replied.
This, of course, was a lie. He knew Suki also played guitar. They'd always get together on weekends and play together. He didn't want to oust his now girlfriend.
"That sounds like a fun idea though," he said.
"That's great! Now all we need is to find a second guitarist" Katara replied, excited.
"Wait, what?" Aang said in a confused tone.
"Oh, I never told you. I'm a singer and Sokka's a-" she chuckled a bit. "A bassist." Aang snorted.
"I- You guys- SHUDDAP!" Sokka exclaimed, flushed. The three of them laughed.
They dropped Aang off.
"Thanks for the ride man."
"Anytime" Sokka replied. Aang smiled and waved.
"Let me know if we're doing this or not," Katara added before he left.
"Got it Kat. Talk later" Aang said, then Sokka drove off.
Aang walked inside the house and was met with his mother.
"So, she's awful nice," Jinora said.
"She is, but-" Aang was grinning. She looked at him sideways.
"Oh?" she said questioningly. Aang nodded. "Hey, look at you! I told you it would happen someday." He laughed, then retired to his room.
He called Suki.
"Hey Suki."
"Heyyy, what's up?" Suki replied.
"Nothin' much, how are you?" He answered.
"Good. In pain but still alive, y'know?" She told him. He laughed. "I miss you already" she said in a pleading-esque voice.
"I miss you too, but don't worry, I'll visit every day. By the way, can I ask you something?" he asked.
"Sure, what is it?" she answered with great curiosity.
"Wanna join a band?"
