Skye walked down the corridor with hurried, steady strides, stopping just before the opening. She pressed her fingers to her earpiece. "Anybody copy?"
"Do not engage." Steve whispered. "Wait for the signal."
She craned her head around the corner, and spotted three men sneaking her direction. HYDRA. She tussled with her orders to stay put as they approached. Any closer, and she would have no choice but to engage. That, or give up her location.
And that, she was most definitely not going to do.
As they crept closer, she opened her hands, bending energy ready to fire.
"Looking for someone?" Skye taunted. She raised her hands, sending all three men high into the air, then hurling them to the back wall.
Drawn to the commotion, Wanda rushed onto the scene, red flaring in the palm of her hands.
Skye instinctively did the same. "Wait."
"You're like me." Wanda added.
"Everything okay Skye?" Tony crackled from her earpiece.
"Oh, uh, yeah everything is-"
"Someone engaged before the signal." Wanda eyed her.
"Sorry Mr. Stark they were coming closer and I-"
"It's fine. Just wait for the signal next time. We'll be there in a minute."
"So." Wanda made a gesture towards Skye's hands. "How did you get your powers?"
"I was at an experiment base for HYDRA. I got my powers from the Mind Stone. I was the only experiment to survive."
"But me."
Skye stared at her in awe. "What do you mean?"
"I'm the other experiment. My brother and I used to serve them."
"I still have memories about my assignments." A shiver ran up Skye's spine.
"Why did you become an Avenger?"
Skye paused for a moment and looked at Wanda with pain in her eyes.
"I got tired of hurting peopleā¦. I wondered if I could be a hero."
Skye's attention was drawn to gunshots ringing from the banister of the second floor.
Steve was in hot pursuit of the gunmen. "Skye, cut him off!" He shouted.
"On it!" She lifted off the ground, and slid in before him, stopping him in his tracks.
"What do you think you're doing little girl?" The man snapped.
Steve halted on the other side along with Nat, trapping the gunmen between them and Skye.
With a hasty pivot, he whipped around and aimed it precisely at the two.
Click, click.
Just as he pulled the trigger, Skye charged into the path of the bullet, tumbling and landing at their feet.
She glanced down where the bullet glazed her left shoulder; blood was already seeping out.
Swift as a ninja, she popped up, threw the man off the banister, and leaped down after he plummeted, his fall broken by the concrete floor.
Skylar raced towards him, countering his blows and overpowering him.
But suddenly, from his pack he drew a sleek, shimmering dagger, turning the tides in the heat of the skirmish.
He raised it triumphantly in the air, and ember streaks of energy were drawn from Skye's body.
Skye weakly collapsed to the ground, Wanda rushing to her side.
Moments later, the mysterious man darted away.
Skye sat up and pounded the floor with her fist. She shook her head and mumbled underneath her breath.
"What was that?" Tony guacked.
"A deadly weapon of my creation."
