Dumbledore continued on his journey until he reached a new, darker street. He wanted to come back and check on Lily and James one more time before casting the Fidelius Charm. Also he wanted to make sure they were home so he could check on the unborn child's power level. If it was too high he'd cast a infertility curse on Lily Potter. Because, only he should be the most powerful wizard of them all. He walked on the dead leaves that littered the sidewalk, until he arrived at the Potter's large stone cottage with a scowl on his face as he plotted, and planned on what to say and do once inside. The curtains were still open, and he could see inside the home.
Inside the home was almost empty, it was if they were planning to go somewhere. Lily was running back and forth through the house making sure they haven't forgot anything. While, James sat on the couch somewhat impatiently as he watched his wife run ragged and wearing herself out. James finally had enough of this, and got up from the couch, and caught up to his wife who was now in the kitchen.
James called out from behind her, "Lily-flower you need to calm down. We aren't leaving for America for another three days."
Lily jumped slightly and was startled from the sound of his voice since, she was deep in thought, "James, you startled me. Besides I know that, I just want to make sure we haven't forgot anything." As she said this, she was ransacking the cupboards taking things out and puting them into boxes.
James shook his head fondly at his wife, he hoped things would never change. "Lily, the house elves can finish packing everything else. You should sit down and relax this isn't good for our unborn child's health."
James called out, "Tippy!"
With a pop a house elf appeared. It was wearing a apron with the Potter Family Crest on it. It said in a high sqeaky voice as it bowed, "Master James called Tippy."
James cleared his voice, "Tippy can you finish packing the cupboards for us?"
Tippy bowed again, "Of course. Tippy will be happy to do that for you Master James."
Tippy snapped its fingers and the cupboards opened, and the dishes were floating out of them. Tippy continued to do this while Lily sat down next to her husband. Lily sighed as she sat there, while she didn't want to move, she felt it was the only way to escape Voldemort and his Death Eaters. She didn't want to be constantly on the lookout for them once their child is born. She still had some doubts about leaving.
James saw the look on his wife's face, he reached out, and grabbed her hand and asked, "Lily are you okay?"
Lily turned to look at him, squeezed his hand with a sad look on her face and responded, "James are we doing the right thing leaving England? I know it will be safer in America but, we are leaving all our friends behind. What if we never see them again?"
When James heard this from he was suprised. He had no idea she felt this way, since she had never said anything before now. He weighted the options on what to say in his mind. He felt the same way too. But he also didn't want anything to happen to his friends and they weren't here if anything happened. He would be crushed with guilt. He just then had an apitheny and decided to share his idea with her.
James then said his idea to her, "Lily, I know how you feel. I feel the same way. I don't want to leave them behind either. But, I was just thinking, what if we invited Sirius and Remus to come with us. We can ask them to come once we get settled in our new home."
Lily looked at him suprised but, with a pleased smile. "Really James you mean it. It would make me feel so much better."
James responed with a grin on his face, "Of course I do Lily, your happiness means the world to me."
Lily squealed with delight, and was about to give him a great big kiss. But, she was interrupted by a knock on the front door. She sighed in disappointment at being interrupted.
James saw the look on her face and quickly said, "Don't worry I'll get it. Perhaps we can finish once they leave."
James got up and gave her a quick peck on the lips, and went to see who was knocking at the door this late.
Outside the house, Dumbledore was quickly getting annoyed at having to wait to come inside. So he knocked again this time even harder, and if he wasn't let inside anytime soon he felt he was going to blast the door down.
"Who's there?" James said in a tense voice from the other side of the door. He hoped it wasn't a Death Eater. You could never be sure nowadays.
"James? It is I, Albus Dumbledore." said Dumbledore in his fake grandfatherly voice.
James was almost relieved hearing his voice but, it could have been a Death Eater in disguise. So he decided to ask him something that only a few people knew.
James cautiously asked, "If you are really Albus Dumbledore, tell me what is my animagus form?"
Dumbledore was furious now, most people would have let him in merely by him telling people his name. He was this close to cursing someone, since this wasn't his night. But, he decided to play James's game for now after all he's only one of many pawns in his grand game of chess.
Dumbledore cleared his throat and tried not to growl as he responded, "James your animagus is a stag."
James opened the door with a relieved sigh. It was really him and not someone else. "Dumbledore, I thought you said you wouldn't be able to come until later." He stepped back to allow the old wizard in.
Dumbledore used his grandfatherly smile that he's perfected over the years and said, "I come with grave news that couldn't wait."
James gave him a concerned look and called out,"Lily, It's ok. It's Dumbledore."
Dumbledore heard a sigh of relief from the next room before he entered the house to greet her.
"Professor Dumbledore, sir?" she politely asked.
"Lily dear, how many times do I have to remind you to call me Albus?" he replied keeping his smile in place.
Lily smiled, and even with the bags under her eyes and her strained tiredness, it was a lovely smile.
"Oh, I don't think I'll ever get out of the habit of calling you 'professor,'" she replied, her memories of sheltered protection at Hogwarts suddenly seeming very distant.
"What brings you here professor?" she asked in a curious way. They weren't expecting him to come here tonight after all.
"I just wanted to check in on you both before casting the Fidelius Charm," he explained. "I'm sorry this had to happen, but..."
James interruped him before he could continue, "Proffesor, why do you need to cast the Fidelius Charm? We are planning to leave the country in a few days so, there is no reason to cast it."
Once he heard this he was shocked and angry. How dare they leave without telling him besides he needs them here for the prophecy to be fullfilled. Perhaps he should tell them the prophecy maybe that will change their minds. Yes thats exactly what he should do. Also discretly scan Lily, and check the power level of their unborn child.
Dumbledore took a deep breath to compose himself and started to explan, "A few days ago, I found out there was a prophecy, and I believe it involves either you or the Longbottoms. It says that a child born at the end of July would defeat the dark lord. And this child would be born to those who have defied him three times. I believe Voldemort knows part of the prophecy, and once your child is born he will be in grave danger."
James and Lily looked at each other in horror and disbelief, that they couldn't believe that their soon to be born son would be the subject to horrible fate. It made their resolve to get out of the country even stronger. They would do anything to protect him.
"The prophecy that you mentioned... do you really think it's talking about our unborn son?" James asked abruptly.
Dumbledore nodded in false sorrow as he responed, "Yes I really do."
"But he's just a baby," Lily said upset. "Why did it have to be MY baby?"
James comforted his wife as she cried into his shoulder. He couldn't believe it either but, if Dumbledore says its true it has to be. Neither one of them noticed Dumbledore discreetly taking out his wand and casting a spell on Lily. When Dumbledore got the results back he was relieved that he didn't need to kill an unborn child. The child's power level was average just enough to make him the perfect pawn. Once the child was old enough he'd send him to the Dursley's where he knew that the child would be blissfully unaware of the Wizarding World. He would believe whatever he was told and sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Dumbledore cleared his throat and Lily looked up from James's lap and he spoke, "Now you know why it's important to have the Fidelius Charm cast. It will protect you from Voldemort. Will you let me do this for you?"
James shook his head, "No thank you Albus, we still believe that we will believe that both us will be safer out of the country. But, thank you for the offer."
Dumbledore inwardly scowled at that answer, but he decided to ask one more time to make sure. "Are you absolutely sure, I can't get you to change your minds."
Lily answered this time, " No sorry Proffesor, we are still planning to leave. Thanks anyways."
Dumbledore was now fuming at this point, there had to be someway to get them to change their minds. He thought for a moment and suddenly he had idea. But, he will wait a few days to make it happen.
Dumbledore bowed slightly, "I understand completely, well I have to going. I hope you have a safe trip."
James smiled and shook his hand, "We will, and thanks for coming and warning us Albus."
Dumbledore put the spell back on his eyes as he responded, "Of course my boy."
*Outside*
If anyone was peeking through their shutters, spying on the lone man, they made no noise, for the silence hung over the whole village, like a great canopy, shielding the inhabitants. If anyone had been observing him, they would have seen him walk to the kissing gate that surrounded the cemetery. His deep purple robes swept along the ground after him, and his hair fell down his back, blowing softly in the wind.
Making his way under the arch that led to the graves, he walked amongst them, a living soul striding about the resting spirits of the dead. Leaves rustled beneath his feet, twigs snapped. Those were the only signs that someone was in the deserted graveyard.
He seemed to know where he was going, for he strode confidently past the newer graves, and slowed his pace only when he had almost reached the furthest corner of the lonely place. He drew to a halt at the end of a row of crumbling headstones and abruptly turned into it. Stopping at a grave somewhere in the middle, the man knelt down. He conjured up a bouquet of flowers and placed them on the headstone as he felt his eyes prickle with tears.
He did not try to fight it; he had been fighting it for too long. Instead, he let his tears flow. Tilting his body towards the neighboring grave, he gasped as more tears threatened to fall.
