Two days later, it was time to take Bellhound and Dancer to the rescue. In those two days, Emma had come to realize what truly terrific dogs they were. They had given her absolutely no trouble. They were spectacularly silent (except the first time she returned to the flat after going out to put petrol in the car, and even then, it was only a single, soft bark from each of them), heeled beautifully on walks, and slept warmly against her each night.
More than once during the past two days, she'd tried to work out how she could keep them, but in the end had come to same conclusion as earlier: she certainly couldn't take them with her on assignments, and even though they had each other, she couldn't exactly leave them alone in her flat for days, or even weeks, at a time.
She toyed with the idea of hiring a dog walker, and even went so far as to contact Pedigree Kennels again to get some names, but when it came right down to it, she knew the dogs deserved better than she could give them.
As Emma's heart was breaking again, the doorbell interrupted her reverie. She knew who it was.
"Steed, come in." He was here to take her to the rescue, having grudgingly admitted that the Bentley fit the four of them better than her little Lotus Elan. He had promised her dinner at Le Gavroche afterwards to help console her, so Emma knew he was not without compassion for what she had to do, but she was completely gobsmacked when she turned and looked at him.
He was wearing the chartreuse tie.
End.
