Later at midnight, Lincoln is walking back home alone in his normal clothes after a brief encounter he just made. His clothes were covered in dirt and his expression looks exhausted. As he finally made it to the house, he opened it despite his exhaustion. "I'm back home-Huh?!"
He was shocked and stunned to see his his younger sisters, and a Lori, all comfortable in the living room. Lori saw him with her own eyes and was calm about this, put did bring up a smile on her face.
"Hey, little bro." Lori greeted. "Miss me?"
"L-Lori? What are you doing here?" Lincoln asked, still stunned.
"Well, Lori here was telling us a story about a cockroach monster attacking at a city. Even if he watched it in the news." Lola explained. "And believe me, she finished it anyway."
"And it was awesome!" Lana cut in, with excitement. "You should've seen it her and Carol, they were all- Bam! Boosh! Ka-pow! And that cockroach freak was all-Oof! Ugh! Bam! Pow!" she said with much more excitement. "But this guy came, and pointed his guns at it, and a bunch of bullets or whatever they're called came out of it, blasting like a turret!" she explained the last, part which almost got her older brother's attention. "You should've seen it, it was so cool!"
"W-w-well, I get the feeling that I just did." Lincoln nervously said, not even spilling the part that it was him who came as assistance and helped Lori and Carol.
"Lori! Girls!" a male voice called out in the kitchen. "Is that Lincoln? Where is he?"
"Oh, he's here, Dad." Lori said. "He just came back from his usual routine after school." she added.
"No wonder..." a female voice muttered also in the kitchen. "Well, he needs to take a shower first. No one doesn't want to smell rotten fish while eating their meal."
"Well, Lincoln, you got a few minutes left I guess to take a shower, before Dad's Brussel Sprout Surprise is out in the oven." Lori insisted.
"Yeah, I think that should be it." Lincoln agreed, and head upstairs to take a shower.
While heading upstairs, he can barely hear his other sisters spending their time together, chatting and making some racket like it was normal in their household. As Lincoln finally reached the bathroom, he found a letter on his pocket, and it read. "Meet me at Paradise Beach, at 7."
THE ACING HEROES
CHAPTER 3
TRAIN FOR IT
Paradise Beach. Daytime. 7:19 AM
As Axis Fighter, in his health condition-ish form, waited for Lincoln to arrive at the beach, he remembered that he left a note the young Loud boy, before departing their ways. He checked his watch, only to find out that it's been fifteen minutes around seven. Somehow, he heard an exhausted panting that can be heard very loudly as the voice came closer and closer and easily be audible.
Axis Fighter turned his head to see Lincoln getting exhausted. "Ah, young Loud. I was a bit worried about you. But again, it's okay if you don't want to come here at all. It's fine, really." he insisted. "You don't have to push yourself."
Lincoln, still panting, raised a finger in explanation. "No... it's not... that..."
Flashback from earlier, Lincoln was about to reach the bus, only to get left behind once it leaves. He tried for the second time, but was too late. Third and fourth time, it made him even more left behind. The fourth bus was like a trick move for him to make him tie his shoes, and disappear in the road. End of flashback.
"My boy, were you even aware about the bus schedules?" Axis Fighter reminded.
"I was aware but the bus doesn't wait for passengers who are a few seconds behind." Lincoln said.
"No wonder." Axis Fighter wondered. "I did remember that I was once left behind by the bus once. Guess my alarm didn't go off that time." He sheepishly remembered a memory of his own. "But that was from the past. Walking and taking trains are much better."
"So, anyway, why'd you call me here?" Lincoln asked.
"Well, young boy," he started off. "as far as I can go, and I can say, today is your first training to become a stable user of your sudden abilities." Axis Fighter.
"Wait, what sudden abilities?" Lincoln asked.
"Remember when you fought that insect monster?" Axis Fighter recalled, remembering how Lincoln was in the town, wielding his blasters at it, and releasing a number of blasts and fighting with his batons. "When you used your equipment and skills at it, I can easily say that I believe that you have the potential of being a hero in the future. You show that even you almost got yourself killed, and saved two Public Heroes from getting killed, you still managed to fight, even if it will cause your own life." He stated. "And that's something that I'm surprised about. Which also gave me this opportunity to train you."
"Oh, I see..." Lincoln realized it now of what he meant. "Though, now that you mentioned it, I guess that blast from my guns did a big number on it. I have to get back to my old group to let them fix it."
"That's exactly why I told you to come here." Axis Fighter calmly said.
"So, uh, when do I get my powers?"
"Young man, patience is the key to everything in life." He said as if he was a wise monk. "To get what you want, you need to earn it. But in my case, you have to train for it in order to get it."
"So, is this going to be like school work? Because I've done plenty of that." Lincoln asked.
"This is nothing like school. Having powers is also about having responsibility. As a wise man once said..." Axis Fighter said. "With great power, comes with great responsibility."
"Did you just say that from a comic book?" Lincoln asked. "As in literally, a comic book that everyone is familiar with."
"Why yes, it is." Axis Fighter responded. "Why you asked?"
Lincoln made a deadpanned look, and a supportive smile to not make it look suspicious. "…No reason." He responded. "Anyway, where does my training start?"
"Right here, in Paradise Beach." The Heroic Fighter gestured his hand to a pile of garbage that looked few. "Right over there."
Not only he felt dumbfounded by the comic book reference he gave off, but Lincoln felt a little bit more dumbfounded. "This looks easy." he said, with a tone of an exaggerated teen. "I can be done with this in ten minutes."
"Look again."
Raising his eyebrow, he walked further, only to see that the pile from his distance was an illusion. As he got close, the trash he saw is like a scale of a mountain in the beach. He was shocked to see many trashes and junk, all piled up in every place in one area. He even had his mouth open.
"This… this is my training?" Lincoln asked. "That's a lot of trash! Are you trying to make me do community service all because of what I did?"
"No, for that last question." Axis Fighter answered with a normal looking expression. "And yes, this is all of the trash in this beach."
"Please don't tell me I have to swim in it because my little sister already does that" Lincoln said, shuddering from the memory.
"Not exactly. This actually and basically how your training will start." Axis Fighter stated.
"Oh man, there's even a bunch of laundry machines out there." Lincoln slightly complained, but he kept his composure. "Uh, don't mind me asking, but, how did you managed to get all that trash here in the first place?"
"Well, I used up all my powers just to get them here." Axis Fighter gestured to a pick-up truck. "Also, I drove some of them here with that truck."
"Oh..." Lincoln let out a sigh. "Figures..." he muttered. "But why do I have to this? I thought it was just a normal workout routine, like dumbbells or a treadmill. I mean, why not we do that kind of routine instead."
"Cleaning Paradise Beach with all the trash in it is a great way to strengthen your body to be in great shape to handle the powers that you might have. Or in this case, powers that are mine." Axis Fighter stated.
"What do you mean?" Lincoln asked, feeling curious of what he just said.
"Ever heard of a superpower called an Odic Ability?" He asked.
"No. Not really." Lincoln answered honestly. But as curiosity killed the cat, he made a wild guess. ""Wait, you're telling me that's what the Odic Ability is all about?" Lincoln asked, feeling like this was the explanation of the Odic Ability.
"No. Not really." Axis Fighter answered, with no hesitation. "That's actually quite different. I was just saying all that to make you feel motivated." He cleared his throat. "You see, I myself have my Odic Ability, which gives me the full will to use my Strike Technique. My powers didn't just all start from the big symbol on back." Suddenly, his body, via his Odic Ability, turned him into his real, muscular form. "It was given to me as a gift from the previous Odic Users."
"And who were they?" Lincoln asked, getting the full knowledge about his idol's power's history.
"My family." Axis Fighter, with a slight croak on his tone that can't be heard, answered.
"Wait, as in biological or..."
"Not really biological." he corrected. "They were the ones who gave me the opportunity to be one, but they are still my family," he paused for a second. "but... the rest is history." he ended. "Now, let's get your body in shape in order for you to obtain the same abilities as mine. But don't think your powers will be the same as mine. Who knows, it might be a better one than mine." he laughed heartedly.
Lincoln looked at his hand, and gripped, which only means he's up to the test.
And so, in the start of his training, Lincoln did all the impossible that he can somehow do in order to obtain his own Odic Ability, just like his mentor. Although, his intense training schedule was... well intense and something that almost tire him out. Like pulling an old laundry machine with his body, even a fridge or a 50s TV. Sorting the old tires in order, lifting more trash with his back, and the cycle goes on. Sometimes, while having some trouble with the work, the Heroic Fighter would always sometimes impress the women with his looks, with of course, much to the boy's dismay.
An addition to his training schedule is that he talked to his dad, who's also a public hero, in giving him a healthy diet for his intense training schedule. He even convinced his mom, also a pubic hero, in giving out some tips about his intense training. At school, he also works hard in his academics before the end of the semester just to get a better head of life. And lastly, the same cycle goes on and on for the coming months.
But unfortunately, it will last up to ten months in order for him to get in good shape to handle a powerful ability just like his favorite hero.
During his intense, and hardworking training, Axis Fighter noticed Lincoln overdoing his schedule. He overworked himself, sweating furiously, and his arms and legs feeling like jelly. He didn't follow the directions that he was given at all.
Which starts to let him fall to the ground.
Luckily, Axis Fighter caught by surprise, saving the boy in time. "Young man, what on Earth are you doing to yourself?" Axis Fighter's tone became like a strict parent. "Don't you have any idea what you're doing?!"
"I... I..." Lincoln tried to speak, but despite on how hard he overworked himself, he can't speak normally. "I was just... doing what you said..."
"Yes, but overworking yourself won't be the best to do so." his tone was still strict again, but it was for the best. He carefully let him stand to catch his breath. "I told you that you need to follow the directions I gave you, and not overwork yourself to death! What would your parents and family think about this? Your safety and health matters most." he sighed to release some steam. "Why are you even doing it? Aren't you aware about how you look now?"
"Axis Fighter, when you said that you can be a hero like you, I was given a spark of hope that I can do better." he said, with his voice weaker but he still kept going. "I wanted to be like you. And every hero in this world. I wanted to become the strongest hero, and I will keep overworking myself to obtain your power. Because... I need to train for it. I'll keep pushing hard and train hard for it!" he said, with confidence on his soul and voice.
Axis Fighter was thinking that this was going to kill him, or making him delusional all because he wasn't born with powers or was never considered a hero by the public during his vigilante days.
No. Not at all.
This was something that he knew from him. Axis Fighter sees great potential in the young, white haired boy. He believes that if he pushes hard to the limits on himself, it just might be worth it in the end.
Axis Fighter smiled, calmly. "Okay then, young Loud." he started. "Let's modify your work schedule then."
He was motivated. Motivated to help him achieving his dream.
"Wait. Really?" Lincoln was confused by his sudden response. "You're serious?"
"Yes, I am, young man." He said, with a smile. "You've got spunk, and it seems like you really want to work hard for this." He put his usual smile for the white-haired boy. "Leave it to this old, spunky man, right here."
"You don't look kinda old to me at all, you know?"
And with that, he let out his usual laugh, knowing that he made the right decision for the young boy.
Nighttime at the Loud residence, Lori is cleaning the dishes while the younger sisters are watching a movie together, and their parents went out to spend their time together outside the house. She was still staying at her former home for a quite some time now, or maybe approximately 9 weeks in her stay. She did said before Lincoln came back during the first time, she'll be staying for a couple of months just to see her family for a while, since she seldom received any tasks given by RECON.
Lori did even noticed Lincoln during past few months that he's been doing his intense training lately. Jogging at weekend mornings, doing some laps at afternoons, and push-ups and ab crunches every night. Eventually, she decided to ask herself 'why is doing all of this?'. She needed answers.
Lori finished her last dish for the night, and walked in the living room. "Hey guys, have you seen Lincoln around?" she asked.
"Lincoln's doing his usual routine every night around 8." Lola answered. "I think he's been doing some exercising again." The power ring bearer took a bite of her Snickers bar. "Although, now did I mention about that, I guess I can say Lincoln's getting odd about this whole exercise thing."
"Yeah..." Lana spoke out, feeling suspicious. "What's he even planning for? I bet he's trying to impress some girl, which could be totally lame. My only answer stands to this is that he wants to look cool. Or he has secret workout tips and won't share any of it." Lana guessed, shrugging it off.
"He must be planning for some occasion." Lucy pondered. "Who knows, maybe he wanted to have a new appearance and wanted a new style in his life."
"I think he has secret workout tips and won't share any of it." Lana said. "I mean, who knows, he and Lynn are close since she's two years older than Linc."
"Well, that doesn't kinda matter. Whatever Lincoln is doing isn't something that can change his life forever. I mean, not every girl wants that." Lucy stated. She faced Lori. "By the way, he's at the front yard."
"He is?" Lori was a bit dumbfounded. Of all the places, outside of their own house. She wondered if he was ever gonna be at. Like the gym or probably in his room.
"Yeah. Look." The goth with undead powers said, gesturing her index finger to the window.
Lori walked towards to the window and glance at it, as she saw a sweaty and exhausted Lincoln doing his evening routine. Lori wasn't sure to be either mad, disappointed, or confused after seeing his brother for the first time work out in the evening, and I mean, during his first start when he accepted that deal from Axis Fighter.
"I wonder what you're up to." Lori wondered suspiciously. She exited the house, and just made like five or seven steps, and stopped as she watched Lincoln exercise
Lincoln continues exercises as Lori exited the house, and watched her brother kept going by the porch she's seating at. She decided to make a move after three minutes, and spoke. "So, how long has it been since you've been exercising?"
"About six months." Lincoln wiped his sweat, ending his exercise routine and grabbing his water jug. "Why?" He asked as he drank some water to cool of some steam from his body.
"Well, it's just that, I've never seen you exercise this great." Lori was impressed. "I mean, back in my RECON training days, Bobby was a great runner in the lap. I mean, you kinda heard that story once, right?"
"Yeah. it was even a bad thing though, since his leg got all scratched up." Lincoln brought up that last part. It was true. Bobby was a great runner during his and Lori's first day of RECON. All the sudden, he lost focus on his speed, and scratched his leg, badly.
Lori chuckled a bit nervously. "Yeah... That's also... one..." she said.
Lincoln was starting to get curious about Lori sneaking up on him just now. Even if it's something that his remaining family did as well, this was different. Lori was one of the few people to ask about how his exercise routine been going up. Of course, even him has the right to ask this.
"What's this all about, Lori?" Lincoln asked, shifting his tone to something like a young, mature adult. "Why are you even asking this. You know you're the first person to ask that for months, and no one ever did."
"Well, I was caught up with other stuff and going around places to notice anything." Lori said. "Plus, I was getting suspicious about your routine every day, and every night. So, I was kinda hoping what's the occasion for?"
"What for? Why would you even ask that?" Lincoln asked. "Or the fact that you've been here already for six months, and in two days, you'll be leaving back to RECON." Lincoln stated. "Besides, it's obvious that I won't be able to be in a hero program after a new semester, in a different school."
Lori sighed, knowing that Lincoln knew what he meant is really something. "Lincoln, you're not going to a hero program." she said firmly.
"And why not?" Lincoln asked, now in a slight angry tone. "You know, I've been working hard on myself, and in school, just to get in to a hero school that I always dreamed in going."
"You mean the same hero school that I once studied at?" Lori reminded. She chuckled, slyly. "Lincoln, what makes you think you can train hard for this? You know, you're not even that compatible in becoming one."
"What? Of course I am." Lincoln said. "Look, I've been working out. What do you think I've been doing?"
"That's not what I meant." Lori misinterpret on what he said. Sighing once again in frustration, she calmed down. "Lincoln. Hero schools are no joke. It's not like the normal, everyday middle school you're at with Mr. Bolhofner, new classroom inside the school included." she cleared her throat. "It's not even close as a "dream school" as everyone would say it. Hero programs are a lot to take in, and there's no telling when you're gonna say that you'll give it all up, or just keep trying until you look like an idiot in the rest of the new semester."
"Really, Lori?" Lincoln asked, sarcastically. "An idiot?"
"Well, not really, but –" Lori was about to say.
But she was cut off by Lincoln. "It's fine, I know you didn't mean that. You think I was a fool to follow my dreams, just to become a hero?" Lincoln continued. "Lori, you were the first people to be a hero, followed by our other sisters. And I was hoping I can be the next in line. But all of you guys, and everyone who knew me, said that I can't be a hero, cause it'll kill me." Lincoln wiped some more sweat from his body, but he can feel his body heating up knowing his upset. "Look, I don't care what people will tell me if I made the wrong decision in life, cause it's happening already. I can decide on my own, right now. Which is why I'm doing this so I can get into the entrance exam in A.H Academy."
"A.H Academy?" Lori was confused after what her brother just said now. "Lincoln, that school isn't a normal school like everyone wanted to enroll at." she stopped for awhile. "Look, I get it. You wanted to follow your dreams, I get it, and I'm sorry, but... I don't think being a hero in the future is right for you. It takes a lot of responsibility, and I don't think you want that. Right? Besides, I talked to mom and dad did said that if you're ever gonna go in an entrance exam and fail, just give it up."
"No, Lori. It's what I wanted." Lincoln corrected. "And it's my choice. Whether you like it or not. And I'm not going to fail in my first day, or make a bad impression when I'm in there. I'm gonna prove to the people who looked me down, that I managed to do this."
"I'm telling you as your big sis, please don't push yourself beyond your limits. We all have limits and when you push yourself beyond them, you're only hurting yourself even more." Lori reasoned.
"But you didn't even see me done it yet." Lincoln made a valid point somehow. "Look, it's getting late. You need some rest, Lori. See you in the morning."
And with that, Lincoln headed back inside his house to grab himself a nice shower and some good sleep to start tomorrow, or whatever will it be since tomorrow is Saturday. Lori is still left outside as she walked to the porch and took a seat. Sighing from their not-so much of an argument, Lori felt worried about Lincoln's decision by enrolling into a hero school, but as now, it didn't mattered anymore. She doesn't want to ruin the last two days of her vacation.
"I just hope you made the right choice." Lori internally said, hoping for the best for her brother.
The sound of water sprinkling in the shower is now off. After drying himself off and putting on some fresh underwear and shorts for sleeping, Lincoln grabbed his towel and still proceeded to dry his hair with it. After completely drying himself off, he went to his room and put on a fresh, orange shirt that's left on his bed. Before doing anything else while it's still 8:30, Lincoln glance at his backpack, which almost seems to be stuffed a lot. It only goes to show that it wasn't stored in properly.
"That's odd. I never seen my backpack looking like that." Lincoln felt suspicious, and decided to open his backpack. His eyes widen a bit and his mouth agape as he saw his pair of weapons, which is his modified blaster pistol/baton, inside his bag, fully repaired after his previous battle with the cockroach villain.
Focused at looking at his repaired weapons, he even glance something peaking out. He grabbed it and checked what it was. "A note? What for?" Lincoln said to himself in curiosity, but he decided to read what's in it. "Dear Lincoln, here are your weapons, which are now fully repaired and ready when you use it. Your friend, the Gunsmith. P.S: In case if you break them, accident or not, I placed in the blueprints for the weapons for you to repair on your own." He finished reading. Lincoln searched his bag for the blueprints as said in the note. Once he found it, he opened it, only to see a mix of complicated parts and instructions of the blueprints. This made his mouth dropped in pure shock.
"Oh great…" the white-haired vigilante said in sarcasm. "Thanks… I guess."
August 29. The final month…
As the sun is set, the same truck is seen to be parked at Paradise Beach. The driver, Axis Fighter, got out of the truck and started walking, even he is aware that he parked the truck about a mile away, giving him only about fifteen to twenty minutes of his time, since his going to the trash pile area by foot.
"It's already the end of the month by now. I hope the young boy doesn't have any complications to himself." Axis Fighter sighed. "I can't blame him nor myself if that ever happened, but it was his choice."
As he finally reached to the trash pile in the beach, he realized that the trash pile is no longer a trash pile. Everything was sorted in neatness, the area is free from all the junk scattered in the beach, and mostly, it's all pilled up in one area only. This confuses Axis Fighter for a bit, as he looked up to the top of the pile, only to see a figure standing on top of it, screaming. And it's all coming from Lincoln, covered in sweat and exhaustion, which sums up his intense workout routine.
The Heroic Fighter in the World widen his eyes in shock as he observed the beach. "No way…" he was tone was justified from the view. "He cleaned it all up! He even cleaned up the entrance of it! Not even a speck of dust! I can't believe it!" he said, now impressed by the white-haired vigilante's effort. "I just can't believe it." He repeated.
"Oh my… Oh my…" and then, his smile widened with pride and joy. "Goodness!"
The white-haired boy almost fell from the top of all the junk pile, but was saved by his mentor in a blink of an eye. The Heroic Fighter was pleased to see the young boy saved once again from his fall, but was more pleased to see that he managed to push to the limits in the end of the month, that he succeeded.
"Hey… I did it." Lincoln said weakly, due to the intense and final workout he had accomplished. "I finally did it, Axis Fighter!" He gave off a weak smile.
"Of course, you did, you entertainer! You really did, impressed me today." He put him down for him to stand on his feet. He grabbed his phone and showed it to Lincoln. "Here. Take a look. Here's a picture of you during your first day."
Lincoln looks at the picture in his phone. An old picture of an white-haired boy that lay on the sand's ground, with an sad expression on his face that almost had tears flowing out of it.
"Is that…"
"It's you. Ten months ago." Axis Fighter proclaimed. "But now… You did good. You really did! It may not be that visible, but you have certainly made it this far till the end!"
It was true from what he said. The former body of the white-haired vigilante wasn't that toned and built enough, despite being a vigilante for about a year ago. But now, it was toned down to into a perfect form for him to inherit his own ability like his mentor. Despite not being too muscular like Axis Fighter himself, he was certainly perfect enough to inherit his own powers.
Lincoln weakly looks at his seemingly shaking hand, with a smile that creep out on his face. "It feels like I was cheating…" he stated. "… but after all this. After all the hard work I've been through… I feel like it was all worth it." He said, almost tearing up, knowing that this is was a moment for him.
"You really did a lot of effort to make this through." Axis Fighter admitted. "But at least you managed to not give it all up, otherwise, it will all be for nothing."
"Yeah. You're right." Lincoln agreed to the Heroic Fighter's words.
"Now enough of that. It is time for the award ceremony!" Axis Fighter declared. This is the moment that Lincoln is waiting for. "It's time for you to have your own powers."
Lincoln's smile widened from the news that he delivered. "Wait? Really! Oh man, this is… all going to fast! I wonder what will my powers will be! I hope it's like yours, or something completely different! Or maybe something that focuses on flight or-" He realized he was stammering in front of Axis Fighter, like the inner nerd he is, but he remained calm and kept his composure calm. "Sorry, force of habit." He was embarrassed. "It's just that… This is kinda like a new thing for me."
"Don't have to apologize at all." Axis Fighter stated. "Now, take this to heart. This is the power that you earned because of your own effort, strength, and spirit."
Gripping his hand into a fist and having an eager look, he was ready of what will he be given after all the training he have been through. Somehow, he took that reality that would be surprising, even in comics. Or… mostly in comics.
"You're power…"
Here it comes. He reached out his hand, and placed his palm directly to his shoulder. Afterwards, he let go after a faint glow disappeared.
"… is now in you!"
… Huh?
"Huh?" Lincoln answered, mixed with his and combined dumbfounded and confused tone, smile and shrink-like pupils. He was wondering right now that all that training that he went through where all to nothing. "What did you just do?"
"I gave you your powers! That's what I did!" the hero laughed heartedly.
"But… I don't feel anything at all."
Axis Fighter shouldn't probably have said that. He was a bit to forward to that part. But instead… "Uh… Wait! Uh…" he stuttered. "It doesn't matter what it is or what powers you have. As long as it will come you feel it, you will eventually know what powers you have." He explained at his best.
"How can I tell when it will come out?" Lincoln asked. "Do I feel it? Or… let it all out or somehow?"
"Don't you mean how long will it take." Axis Fighter corrected. "It may take up to days or weeks." Axis Fighter answered. "What matters most is that it will be in your body as long it will process."
"But –"
"Now that's enough questions for now, young boy." Axis Fighter interrupted. "You're intense training has finally ended now. Although, you need to be ready for school in about six days." He reminded. "If you have any other questions, or anything important. Please, come here again at the same time. I got hero work to do, you know."
Lincoln didn't want to waste the time of his mentor who helped him for the past ten months of his life. So, what he did is he just followed without saying another word, but what he did said is. "Well, I don't wanna interrupt you or stop you. Sure you still got your duties up ahead."
"I'm just glad you understand, young boy." Axis Fighter said. "Good luck in the entrance exam now!"
"Yeah." Lincoln responded. "By the way…"
Suddenly, a dash of superhuman speed created a gust of wind, which made Axis Fighter running on his way to presume his hero duties. Without letting him finish what he's about to say next.
"… how does it work?"
