Remus's POV
She just ran.
As in, legged it out the dorm, no explanation as to where she was going, she just left.
But then I smelt it.
Blood.
And then I knew why she'd ran and where she'd run to.
The Forbidden Forest.
So, without thinking, I ran, out the dorm, following her scent, all the way out to the only place she could go, ignoring the shouts of the girls and the chorus of 'Oi, where are you off to?' from the boys.
I got to the edge of the wood, the familiar trees swaying in the chilly breeze, the leaves rustling, the sound would've been calming almost, had I not been looking for a Vampire, one who was most likely out of control.
I don't even know why I was out here, I didn't like Lucinda, we hated each other, she was a Vampire and I was a Werewolf, so why was I trying to save her arse? Did I care? Somewhere deep down I must've, because despite our supposed hatred of one another, I ventured further into the forest, listening intently for anything that could be her.
There came a scratching noise, a sound I knew all too well, it was claws against bark.
I followed the echo, coming to a stop in a glade, which would have been very pretty, had it not been for the Vampire at the side, who was shredding the trunk of a tree to pieces.
I took a cautious step forward, careful not to startle her, and unfortunately there just had to be a oh so very cliche twig below my foot as I walked. The twig had snapped and I was now face to face with an angry, yet sad Lucinda, who no longer looked as she should, but instead, her skin was as white as the milk they serve with your cereal at breakfast, her teeth, or rather her canines, were elongated as she snarled and smirked at me and her eyes...
Her eyes were something out of a fairy tale book.
They were ethereal.
So dark that even if the entire world was on fire, there would be no reflection in her irises.
But there was something else, because as she stared at me, debating whether to feed off me most likely, the glassy orbs tinted themselves red and in doing so they made her look menacing. Though to me, they looked beautiful, they were enticing, like she was pulling me into a never ending abyss of beauty.
I looked at her, surprised I was still alive, and for a split second, she looked like a scared teenage girl, who did not want to harm anybody and who had simply lost her control, but it only flashed across her features before is was, once again, replaced by the pure hunger for blood.
I took a deep breath and thought over what I was about to do.
"Cindi?" I asked, trying to keep my ever growing fear in check.
The girl snarled at me again before speaking.
"Who is Cindi?" She asked and it was then that I realised, Vampires couldn't remember who they are during a transformation, just like Werewolves.
"You, you're Cindi, Lucinda Constantine, friend of the Marauders." I replied.
"What is a Marauder?" She questioned, her tone now more inquisitive than threatening.
"The Marauders are a group of boys who cause mischief, at Hogwarts, and you're mates with them." I answered.
"What is Hogwarts?" She inquired.
She was extremely curious, more so than I expected.
"A magic school for Witches and Wizards, which you attend, because you're a Witch." I explained and I almost let out a sigh of relief when some recognition contorted on her face.
"No, I'm a monster, not a Witch." She said, taking a step back as the real Cindi slowly began to resurface.
"You are not a monster, Cindi." I spoke, my tone soft as I took a step forward.
"Get away from me, Remus." Her voice was panicked now.
"I'm not going anywhere, okay." I stated.
"Please," She begged, tears streaming down her face. "I don't want to hurt you."
"You're not going to." I said as I closed the gap between us and embraced her in the most comforting hug I could give.
And she did not break away, or hurt me, but simply sobbed into my chest as we sunk to the floor.
She was no longer a Vampire, she was Cindi again.
For some reason, seeing her like this made me feel guilty, about all the things I've said and done to her over the past few months. She didn't deserve that treatment, or did she? Was she really as bad as the myths say? Would she kill me if she got the chance? That last question I didn't think applied anymore, she'd had the perfect opportunity to end my miserable, insignificant life, just then, but she'd spared me, because that wasn't who she was. I still struggled to look past her last name though, she was a Constantine.
And I'd hated the Constantine's for my whole life, even more so after I became what I am.
Because, one of her ancestors, I was unaware to which one, had ended my Mothers life, she had been a meal, they'd fed on her, as if she was nothing more than a rabbit or a sheep.
And I'd watched as she fell to the floor, lifeless.
I hadn't just lost my Mother that night, I'd lost my childhood.
My Father took her death hard, seeking comfort in the bottle, our home quickly becoming filled with empty firewhisky bottles and the shouts of his nightmares as he slept. He hadn't worked for a good few years now, I'd tried convincing him to get sober, rebuild his life, many a time, but he'd refused, probably because he'd barley been conscious every time I asked, but there wasn't a time when he wasn't drunk or with a drink in his hand. So, during the summer before fourth year, when I was old enough, I went and got a job as a waiter in the local pub. My wages were small, but if I saved up there was enough to get my Father through the autumn months, though the money would mostly be spent on alcohol. Then when Christmas came around and I went home, I worked longer hours, again saving up, knowing that he would again go and blow it all on his drinking habit.
Cindi's sobs lessened and I felt her relax in my arms, but that was short lived as she tensed again when there came another cliche twig snapping, just a few feet away.
"Cindi?" Lily called out softly.
The girl in my arms turned her face, which was red and blotchy from her tears, towards the redhead, who was not alone, but flanked by Marlene, Mary, James, Sirius and Peter.
"I'm sorry." She whispered, though to whom she spoke I couldn't tell.
I let go of her as Lily, Mary and Marlene came over, bending down in the grass and hugging her comfortingly. I took that as my cue to leave and I went and stood next to the boys who were stood, shocked into silence, by a group of baby sapling trees.
"I'm guessing you saw everything." I stated, facing forward, watching the scene in front of me unfold.
"Yeah." James answered, he too kept his face in front of him.
"Is she really a Vampire?" Peter asked, a slight tremble to his voice.
"Yeah, she is." I replied, my face stoic.
The girls had managed to get a smile out of Cindi now and they were giggling about something Marlene had said. I looked at the Vampire girl, her face was no longer that of a tomato, but every time I looked into those dark, reddened eyes all I could see was the same eyes as my Mother's murderer and then on Cindi's face was the look of fear my Mother had worn in her last moments.
I blinked, ridding myself of the memory that too often haunted me and turned to face the boys, who seemed to have made some sort of peace with the idea that two of their friends were dark magical creatures.
"You're okay with it, right?" I questioned, wanting to make sure they were accepting of her.
Because they'd be hypocrites if they didn't.
"Of course we are Remus, it was just... unexpected." James reassured me, a small smile on his face.
"It actually explains a lot." Sirius chipped in.
"How so?" I asked.
"Well, she's a nutcase, and now we know why." The boy answered, smirking.
"Takes one to know one, Black."
The four of us turned at the sound of her voice.
She looked completely normal now, her cheeks weren't white, nor were they red, but they had returned to their original peachy colour and her demeanor seemed a lot more happy, the navy of her eyes were alight with love and acceptance.
"Well, at least we know never to take you to a Hospital." Sirius retorted and everybody else held their breath as they waited for her reply.
"Well, at least whenever I go swimming I don't smell like a wet dog for hours afterwards." She responded, flipping him the bird and smirking as she walked away, out the forest and towards the castle, the girls following along behind her.
"Shit, does she know!" Sirius exclaimed.
"She knows about me." I said, startling all three of them.
"What!" They all but shouted in unison.
"She's a Vampire and I'm a Werewolf, why do you think we hate each other?" I asked rhetorically before making my way back up to the school.
The entire journey back I had to explain to the three of them about the prejudice between our species, I left out the part about my Mother though, I didn't want anybody knowing that, not even them.
I would soon learn that the incident in the forest that day wouldn't be the only time I 'd have to calm her down and that there would be multiple times in the future where she'd do the same thing for me.
Because we seemed to be the only ones that understood one another.
And deep down, we cared for each other.
We were both animals.
We were both monsters.
And neither of us liked being who we were.
So, I guess, we're more alike than I originally thought.
