Will was right. After that first good interaction with El, she came to him with different questions on dancing. "What is that move called," or "Can we try that Will?"
Sometimes, if he was lucky, El would ask him different questions. Nothing about dancing. That was in just their first week in their new town. Since they had moved to town mid-week. The principal of the school would let them start next week. His mother had rushed to the school and signed them up the second day they were there.
"Mom." Will said. He must have pulled her out of her thoughts. She was sitting at the table with a cigarette between her fingers. "What is it sweetie?" she asked. "Well, I was wondering if I could get a hair cut?" Will said with uncertainty. "What's wrong with your hair?" she asked. "Nothing!" he exclaimed. "It's just..I want to do something different with it." Will finished. "Oh..okay. I can take you tomorrow. How's that sound?" she asked. "That's great."
The next day, Will was taken to get his hair cut. El tagged along since she didn't want to be home alone. Jonathan had gone to find a job before they started school. They went to the nearest barber shop. Once they were inside, Will explained to the barber how he wanted his hair cut. He was getting rid of this bowl cut. It was iconic to say the least, but Will wanted some change. He was kind of getting a Danny Zuko hair cut, but since Will's hair wasn't going to be long enough to slick back, he was just going to spike it up. It seemed that El wanted her hair cut too. Her hair was a little past her shoulders. "I like it short." she said after her hair was cut. It was now on her shoulders, and his was a mess. It was all in his face, but unlike before, his hair was wet and ready to be spiked up. As they pulled back into their new driveway, Will started to spike his hair up. Before they got inside the house Will had to ask his mother something else. "Mom?" he said. She looked at him and said, "Yes sweetheart?"
"I was wondering if we could go shopping for new clothes as well."
"Well that is fine. I'll give you and El some money to go tomorrow. How does that sound?" she asked. Will nodded his head.
The next day was a Saturday. All of the kids would be out doing something. Going to the store was a bit frightening. His mother dropped them off at the local thrift store. She had given them each 20 bucks. Along with an extra five bucks from Jonathan. As Will walked in, he looked around for the shirts. When he finally spotted them, he spent a few minutes looking at them. In the end he ended up getting three new shirts, three new pairs of jeans, a cheap leather jacket, and a cheap ring, and a cheap pair of sneakers. He still had enough to get them something to eat. El seemed to thinking the same because she didn't get much either. She had about seven dollars left. "You spend yours. I'll save mine for food." Will said. El shook her head in understanding.
After they left the store, the two headed to a diner close by. Each having five dollars, they would have enough to get something small. El had bought a skateboard, and Will was surprised. She didn't even know how to skateboard. Max might have had some influence on El. Will started to remember their last few months. Max had insisted on teaching El the basics of skateboarding. But every time El got on the skateboard, and she started to move, she fell. Most times he would see El watching Max ride. While Max was riding, she would give El tips. She also would talk little bit about the different tricks that could be done on a skateboard. It seemed she had been paying attention to Max and her words, because El was riding smoothly. The skateboard was worn and really really old. It wasn't even new. But El didn't fall down as they proceeded to the diner.
