Chapter 3: Necessary Evil

It's bad whenever one goes into a room and everything they expected to happen, did. For example, a mother worries about their kid going back to school after they were expelled, only to end up being expelled again. Life has many ways to prove to people that it usually, totally sucks; and that when they see the light at the end of the tunnel, it starts to storm. Ozpin was having one of those moments.

Upon running out the interrogation room he was granted the sight of his worn out lieutenants standing firmly at the door weapons raised. Ironwood to his left had one hand on Due Process aimed forward at his target while his other was raised signalling his men to hold their fire. His right hand woman Glynda looked much better off but exhaustion and caution was written on her face. She was the first to notice her boss exiting the room and lowered her riding crop.

Then in front of him was their target, a battered girl with a bent blade and worn down umbrella positioning herself to charge at the entrance. Honestly, to say Ozpin was impressed by the level of devotion this child had for Roman would be an understatement. He was astonished. This young woman fought through two of the best trained fighters on his side, looks as if she ready to keel over, is surrounded at all sides by dedicated and armed Atlas soldiers, and is still ready to fight her way through to get to her mentor?

Where the actual fuck did Roman find this girl and how can I get one?!

Ozpin steeled his nerves. He normally maintained some control even in his own head. However dealing with Roman had left him a bit irritated due to his inability to cooperate until today. The current situation too was horrid, as now two squads of soldiers now surrounded him and his fellowship aiming their loaded guns at the intruder. He was glad though that General Ironwood had for once listened to his request. The headmaster had no doubt that if either of his lieutenants wasn't on this vessel every soldier would have died. He watched the Atlas training videos, don't they teach these morons how to aim?

"James, tell your men to lower their guns." Ozpin said in his usual calm demeanor. Ironwood momentarily glanced at the headmaster with a confused look, before staring at the thief. "Professor; this woman in the last five minutes had trespassed on military property, assaulted two important public officials, and attempted to release a dangerous incarcerated man. So pardon my language, but bite my shiny metal ass." Having never let go of Neo in his sights he was unfortunately unable to see the look on Ozpin's face. The shock was evident in his expression as his jaw started to hurt from dropping so fast. He'll have to discuss this with the general later, he didn't have time to babysit Jimmy today.

As vulgar as the general was being, Ozpin knew that it was crucial for Neo to be unharmed. He knew a huge influence for Roman's willingness to aid them stemmed from his relationship with her. He valued the life of his... Daughter? Student? Lover? Puppy? Who knew. The point was her being in danger hastened Torchwick's decision. So if Ironwood harms her, all bets are off. "James, that woman's safety is a vital concern for our inmate. If you kill her, we lose that information!" Glynda began to turn to Ozpin, who was doing his best to show restraint.

Ironwood momentarily turned away from Neo and stared down his colleague. "Maybe if you actually did something for the last nine months instead of sitting in your office; we'd actually have something to work with!" Their rant was beginning to draw the attention of the soldiers and Glynda, even Neo was perplexed by the two men screaming at each other. Is this what these guys do all day? No wonder we've been kicking their asses. However their argument was interrupted by the sound of Roman walking out the interrogation room.

"As much as I like a good dick measuring contest I think we have more pressing concerns at the moment. Besides, neither of you can 'measure up'." Roman got between the two morons and pushed them back. Seperating them briefly. His entrance momentarily caused them to stop arguing but half of Ironwood's soldiers took aim at him too. Really Roman, dick jokes? What are you sixteen? Neo thought. As good as it was for her mentor to be unharmed, he already was out the room causing trouble.

But another thing that was perplexing Neo was the fact that he seemed to be helping them.

As he finished with his daily dose of disrespecting authority, he turned to his young protege and adopted a more serious and concerned look. "Neo, are you alright?" Neo was surprised that none of the three prudes seem to be stopping him. She fervently nodded her head in conformation. His lips curled to a slight smirk as he regained his composure. "Glad your alright sweetie. I wasn't planning on replacing you today. Can't stand Mercury and I think Cindy has first dibs on Emerald." She rolled her eyes but realized what was being said. What the fuck Roman?!

Behind him Ozpin and Ironwood glanced at eachother with raised eyebrows. Neo placed her index finger in front of her lips. Roman just shrugged it off. "Don't give me that! Look kid, I hate to tell you this. Believe me. I do. But we're going to the good side... Ugh. I feel like throwing up after saying that. " That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Neo began jumping up in down waving her arms around in frustration. If anything what she said was sign language, the universal symbol of 'Go Fuck Yourself!' was used quite often. Glynda and Jame's jaws both dropped while Ozpin whispered "I told you so" to the rumored couple. The Atlas soldiers fared no better; some began to lower their weapons and looked at each other bewildered.

"Trust me kiddo I know this idea sounds bad. And any other time I would have knocked Ozzy to the ground and smacked him with my big cane." Please be talking about Melodic Cudgel. "But the fact is is that Cinder's plan sucks and it's definitely gonna get us killed. Plus her army of rabid dogs needs to be euthanized. So I'm helping these jackasses take down firebitch." No one in this hallway could believe what he was saying; aside from the two thousand year old Avatar wannabe. While Glynda and Ozpin were trying to remember where she heard these names before; James was debating on shooting Roman for having the audacity to prove him wrong.

As Roman walked across the hallway towards his hurt companion; several of Jame's soldiers began readying their weapons. "Hold your fire!" the general grumbled. His words told the men to not shoot them, but his tone had the underlining message of 'if one of you could please shoot them I would appreciate it'. Luckly for the two thieves the soldiers lowered their weapons. Ozpin sighed in relief as some of the tension had decreased. Yet now Neo seemed to be debating on whether or not to help Roman.

Roman reached his young friend and placed his hand out. "I can't do this alone Neo. Cinder's a damn moron following the orders of a psychotic monster." She grabbed his hand, pulling herself off the ground. She looked into her mentor's eyes. Something was off. He wasn't acting like his self, not the snarky chauvinistic thief she's come to view as a great influence to get life. Now he was acting like a concerned father figure. He placed his hand on top of her own and held it firmly.

"I understand this changes things, but we're not changing. We. Are. Not. Heroes. We do what we do best: steal, cheat, and survive. But right now Cinder and Scarface are working a suicide mission. Just for a moment can we do the right thing? Not because we're going straight, by the gods no! Because it is our best way for us to make it out alive."

If there was hesitation in Neo's head it didn't show. She nodded her head furiously and rushed him in for a hug, causing him to stumble back some. Roman reached around the young thief and leaned her against her shoulders. "I think we could use some pain killers. Some for her because of the fight, a lot for me because I want to get fucked up." The sound of people slapping their heads in frustration echoed throughout the ship. Ozpin stepped forward. "I guess I'll take them to the infirmary, I know the way James." Ozpin walked beside Roman as the three of them left for medical attention.

When they got far enough for the sounds of Ironwood's threatening his men to remain silent and Glynda using her semblance like a custodian; the two men continued their conversation. "We're gonna need to know everything we can about your former allies. Names, semblances, hideouts; anything you think is relevant to us." Roman thought for a moment. "I can think of a few things, but I want to know everything about what the fuck I'm getting into." Ozpin hummed in conformation. "I have a question though." He readjusted his arm to make carrying Neo easier. "What?" the wizard responded. "Aren't you and Salem still married? I take it 'till death do us part' doesn't work good when you two can't get killed." Brothers, this joke again!? Ozpin thought to himself. Neo looked at the two in confusion, being mostly kept out the loop she didn't know what was said in the interrogation room.

"It's funny really. In ancient society, the act of turning your spouse into a red stain on the ground was a form of annulment." Torchwick looked at his protege nervously. In a few silent minutes they were outside the infirmary. Ozpin opened the door and the two crooks entered the room. "I'm starting to wonder if joining your side was a wise decision." All he got in response was a light chuckle

"Sun Wukong. Step forward." the old fool shouted at the podium. I saw the monkey faunus walk to the stage with his usual swagger. The blond leader from team SSSN was climbing up the stairs at the center of the auditorium where were hopeful children became students and blind trainees became huntsmen. Now it serves another purpose. To 'reward the heroics of the young in the aftermath of the Breach'. Amongst the audience was the combined student body of all four academies. At the center of the stage was the headmasters of Beacon and Atlas. The general handing medals to those who fought the Grimm and protected civilians in the attack, and Ozpin speaking about the unity of the kingdoms against the common enemy.

All in all, it was a pompous display of prestige and partisanship designed to make these pawns feel like their actions had meaning. Makes me want to burn this school down ever so much more. My mistress promised me the power of the Maidens and the closest one now lies comatose under this institution. The festival can't come fast enough, I'm sure the locals will enjoy the 'fireworks'.

We've been infiltrating Beacon for months, patiently waiting for the Vital Festival to come for us to shake things up. My subordinates have been very good at keeping a low profile in our plan despite some early misbehaving with a traitor. Emerald herself has shown ludicrously high loyalty to me. Mercury, despite having a careless attitude, was a great asset that I fully intend to use once the singles matches occur. If there's anything I've learned from Salem it is how easy it is to manipulate people.

The White Fang is another example of this. Their prejudices towards humans may have initially caused them to be hostile towards our alliance; but once Adam learned it was better to side with me than against me, his compliance was given to me as well as his men. Right now they were probably setting up the Grimm in the residential areas and business districts. It helps that these areas are mostly populated by humans; where the faunus live and work closer to the wall in the 'Grimm bait' part of the city where they have been arming the destitute. I liked that idea from the branded bull. It almost equalizes the humans who hide behind their meatshield. They think their status gives them power and protection. I know power; I've seen it. There will be nowhere to run.

Roman has been a useful cannon fodder for the mission in Vale, though admiringly his skillset and connections make him a perfect temporary ally. His ability to coordinate heists of dusts helped put Ozpin's search into the city covering our trail. And the Breach had done wonders to ruin the image of our dear headmaster... even if it was premature. Neo is even useful as an fourth member of our little team of thieves and killers. Everything so far has been going exactly as it was planned. At least until today.

"Your a man I would love to have at parties with, though I'm sure this isn't the drink you had in mind." the immortal spoke jokingly, handing the monkey boy a shot glass of sparkling grapejuice. He proceeded to drink the contents in one gulp, toss his weapon in the air, and catch it with his tail before doing his little pose to the audience causing an uproar of applause. I'm secretly hoping this boastful faunus is one of the first to die. The general then pinned a badge on his white shirt and was then given a folded paper and told not to open it until he was seated. Professional Huntsmen were even called in to 'witness the future defenders of humanity'. Though I haven't seen many of them.

Originally I had little concerns about Ozpin's little powerplay. Each of the students called walked up to the podium, recieved a little word of praise, drank a shot of carbonated juice, showed off their weapons, got a little badge like the child soldiers they were and went to sit back down with a small pamphlet. I watched this occur through out the entire three hour ceremony. We were all stuck in this large room until they finished. I figured that the worse comes to shove I have half the powers of a maiden and a computer virus that will turn all of the toy soldiers onto the civilians. The only thing I had to do was remain incognito and wait for it to finish.

The first to be pulled to the stage was Ruby Rose (the favoritism for the silver-eyed brat was not lost to me). Giving her the grandiose speech 'from one prodigy to another' and how 'proud her mother would have been'. I rolled my eyes, some whiny girl joining the very career that got her mother killed, had tears rolling down her cheeks like some toddler. What was Ironwood supposed to give her a fucking hug? More students walked up the stage: Jaune Arc, Neon Kat, Roy Stallion, each performing the same routine. Being lead by a two soldiers to the tall podium must have felt like an honor. Perhaps I'll allow this display of elitism. After all, it's not like anyone here will graduate this year.

The longer I waited at my seat the more I realized there was something going on. This was not a standard part of the Vital Festival, this was introduced at the last minute the day before beginning matches. Every student here was asked to come with their loaded weapons to show them to their peers. Who tells a group of angsty teenagers to bring a loaded gun/sword hybrid into a gods damned reward ceremony?! Red flags went off at first glance of the invitation, so I made sure I had my scroll with me at all times. Salem may not forgive me for activating the virus before the finals; but if this was a trap I would need a way to get the maiden.

Another thing that was odd was the seating was reserved. I was seated in near the aisle close to the northmost exit, the only one behind me was a disguised Neo who was silent (big surprise there). This was actually great for me because if anything does go down I have easy access to the escape route while my minions hold off the students. Be doing Ozpin a favor there, though I would love to see me at full power in a room full of students. Emerald was closer to the center of the tier accross me surrounded by full teams of students like FNKI and NDGO. Mercury faired no better being closest to the stage where Atlas soldiers stood at attention. Additionally I watched many of the students open their pamphlets to read the message. Once read, they often became more serious and concerned. Some chose to inspect their weapons. The huntsmen began to enter the auditorium standing ready for a fight. Anyone who wanted to use the restroom was escorted out by them.

So I remained hoping that my instincts were wrong. Plus me acting different would raise suspicions. I also participated in this charade. I was escorted to the stage by the soldiers who marched down the aisles and stared at the two men with a simulated smile. "You are quite the strong young woman, I would hate to be your enemy." My expression didn't change but my heart raced. I quickly drank the grapejuice I was given and sat down. They couldn't have pinned that badge fast enough. We all recieved the same treatment. I opened my envelope and read the contents.

'Please remain seated until the end of the ceremony. We have a special guest who will be giving a speech shortly.'

They knew!

These bastards found me out and we were lured into a trap. Soldiers, students, weapons, it was a set-up. It had never occurred to me that Ozpin would be so eager to make so many sacrifices to win. Or was it the general's idea? I had always suspected that man was a catastrophe away from going off the deep end. I'm now in a room filled with four academies worth of trained fighters and a company of soldiers. And this special guest; was it highly trained huntsman, another maiden, an assassin like Mercury? This was to many things I can't handle. I reached for my scroll to activate the virus. I hoped that a robot uprising would at least somewhat let me complete my mission, and take what was rightfully mine. But I couldn't find it. It was missing. But where did it go? I looked behind me seeing that Neo hadn't moved since she sat back down. She had a smug look on her face that said all I needed to know.

Of course. Roman's bitch stole it.

My realization was confirmed when a hologram began to activate and I saw the rat's image stand next to Ozpin and Ironwood like they were close friends. The 'special guest' was dressed in his usual garb and hat holding his cane, patting it against his hand. The stadium began to erupt in murmers and hushed conversations. "Now now, don't be alarmed kiddos. I'm sure many of you lot know me but I'm a sucker for introductions." The prick's image walked to the end of the stage and bowed his head to the audience.

"My name is Roman Torchwick, but friends call me RT" Boos and hissing filled the bleachers. I looked around and saw many people began putting their thumbs down while many more took aim at his direction. At least I'm not the only one who currently hates RT. "But if you kids actually read the papers that my cohosts gave you, you would know that there are imposters amoungst you!" Roman waited for a moment before looking at Ozpin.

"I told you to do the 'dun dun dunn' thing." Ozpin glanced his direction with a frustrated look on his face. "I'm not doing that." At this point I was furious. I used my magic to conjure a blade and jammed it into the seat behind me. Only to reveal one of Neo's illusions. I hopped on the seat and pulled out Midnight and shifted it to its bow form. I took aim at the Beacon headmaster.

Their expressions didn't change. Mercury and Emerald got into their fighting stances while all the students and soldiers readied themselves for a fight. Shrugging, he continued his speech. "As you see, Team CMEN has been posing as your friends and fellow students. I can guess you all now know that's not true; they were saboteurs allied with terrorists and criminals" he pointed to himself "determined to bring down the kingdoms". I took a quick peek beside me and counted the trainees. I would not be able to take on a thousand students and soldiers alone.

"Cindy I'm sorry to break your heart. It's not me, it's you." He mocked. "But I'm afraid your gonna have to come up with a new plan. Attack my supermodel army! Protect the handsome ginger!"

In a warehouse two blocks from the Vale Emergency Evacuation Center

Gunfire speed fast as dozens of Atlas soldiers ran through the holes their breaching charge made. The White Fang had a little time to react, as the white adorned soldiers swarmed the building along side Vale's own green dressed forces. With the Altesian Knights and Palidans being used outside the borders to both thin the Grimm outside the walls (and to prevent a suspected virus from hacking them and attacking civilians), all of the military personnel were humans and faunus. Leading this attack was none other than Winter Schnee. Bodies began dropping as soon as they entered the area. The defending faunus began to make use of some of the boxes and cages lying around. Hiding behind the cover, the faunus exchanged fire with the attackers.

There were several other missions like this one; each with huntsmen assistance at worst, and Ace Op support at best.

Winter charged into the fight with her blade drawn. Jumping across the room taking out any resistance she came across. Her swords made quick work of any faunus that was unlucky enough to be in its path. The Grimm began to claw at their cages, the anger and bloodlust riling them into a frenzy. She continued to take full control of the battle field before someone on the other side issued a command.

"Open the cages!" The leader shouted. With that the White Fang that was closest to the containers released the contents into the warehouse. Beowolves, Ursa, Creeps; they began to attack anyone who was near them. Be it White Fang grunts or Atlas and Vale's soldiers. Winter stood there, witnessing the massacre take place with a feeling of dread. It wasn't until she heard someone land behind her. "That's what I get for fighting beside humans."

She turned her head and raised her sword barely catching the incoming attack. The red chokutō was perhaps an inch above her left eye. Making a glyph, she bounced upwards onto a stack of crates that littered the building. Her opponent, Adam Taurus, remained in his spot. "Is never thought of be happy to see a Schnee. At least there will be some silver lining with this betrayal." He hopped from crate to crate, heading towards her direction. Firing Blush at the specialist only for the shots to deflected.

"Adam Taurus, stand down! Your are to be taken into custody for numerous crimes against the kingdoms." Adam smirked and sliced through the container Winter was standing on. She landed onto the ground in a open space in the middle of the warehouse. Surrounded by White Fang terrorists, Grimm and Atlas soldiers fighting eachother, she was soon joined by Adam who leaped across from her. They circled the makeshift arena never letting eachother out their sight.

"Over my dead body."

Back at Beacon Auditorium filled with hundreds of armed teenage warriors and a really pissed off half-maiden

Some of the students like team RWBY and JNPR began to make their ways outside escorting Ozpin into the hallways while Cinder clashed with her attackers. She knew that with her powers she could easily decimate at least a few dozen of the students but she was severely outnumbered. Bullets flew past her glazing her aura while explosions continued on with one knocking her onto the ground. Her distance to the door made it easier to escape but she realized that there was probably several huntsmen waiting outside. All the while, Roman was boasting about how 'safe he felt in Ozpin's office' and how she should catch a flight to 'Atlas if she wanted to find her target'. She failed, this was unacceptable. Everything was working so perfect for her only to be ruined by a crook in an overpriced suit.

Emerald and Mercury faired no better. The assassin progeny was holding his own but the shear numbers began to make their way to him. While the young thief was far worse; with the amount of people targeting her she couldn't use her semblance in a meaningful way, especially since she had less training and experience than her teammates. Using the blasts of wind from Talaria Mercury jettisoned towards Emerald and grabbed her arm. They ran towards the exit fighting tooth and nail against everyone in their way. Once there Mercury kicked the door in and they ran in opposite directions, followed by the swarming mass of students.

By that point five teams had met their fate from the three of them, along with a squadron of soldiers and a some huntsmen. Most of the people who came at Cinder though where the older more experienced hunters. But a licensed hunter is not a concern. She killed better trained men when I was these children's age. But despite the power of the fall maiden even

she would not be able to take on the might of all four academies. Realizing that Ozpin's seating arrangement must have been to push her away to minimalize student casualties, she channeled a massive flame blocking the path of any of her attackers.

Cinder reached the door frame before she heard the general's voice telling the students to stand clear. She turned to see that Ironwood had merged his daul pistols into the holsters and was now holding a bulky looking cannon. He charged it up and a green energy began to accumulate at the barrel. "This is for my men you killed, bitch" he whispered. Due Process fired its beam heading right in Cinder's direction. She slammed the door behind her and conjured a stone wall to shield only for them to be blown away from the blast and having her body slammed into the ground. Struggling to get to her feet, she felt her body ache from the explosion, like walking on hot coals. Getting up felt like her leg was going to snap at the weight.

Yet she pushed through the pain and the ringing in her ears; and began running with her blades drawn, still being shot at and having to occasionally block strikes. Knowing that her mission was a complete failure, returning to Salem empty handed would not be a pleasant experience. He hinted that Amber was heading to Atlas, but whether or not that was a bluff had little meaning. Should that be a lie, it was likely she was still under Beacon guarded by Ozpin's followers. But if it was true... she didn't want to think about it. Emerald and Mercury should serve some purpose as a distraction towards the student body, while she settled a score with a former associate.

She knew one thing that mattered most this moment was that Roman Torchwick was in Beacon, in Ozpin's office! And when she reaches him there won't be a man or woman on Remnant that can't hear him scream. I'm going to fry you like a fish!

Sorry this one took so long. I was actually almost done with it, but I changed the plan halfway and rewrote it. Originally there was going to be a bomb located in CMEN's room that would have gone off, killing the three of them or at least incapacitate them to be finished off. That got scraped because I thought that if Mercury has assassin training he may know if a room was messed with, or someone may have left in the night. And Roman is too theatrical to not let Cinder know that he's betraying her. Everything about him is to draw attention to himself. Plus... it's kinda a boring way to kill off Cinder. I figure Oz sicking his dogs on her would be more fun.

I also had the idea of having Qrow to murder team CRDL in their dorms to justify a lock down and postponement of the Vital Festival; while giving the Cabal the excuse to separate Cinder from her cohorts and take her scroll for 'interrogation'. When she's been caught, they can blame her for Cardin's death. Again, I thought that would be more of a Detective Noir story that any of you are fully free to use. Plus I've been super busy today. Just today before work I drove thirty minutes to buy strawberries for a crawfish boil my family is having tomorrow (incase anyone doubts I'm from the boot state).

But Ozpin has picked his players and has all his bases covered. The point is, I believe the way we view characters is how we flanderize them when we write them. For me, I see Ozpin as morally grey. He would be willing to use almost anything to achieve his goal, but still believes in the greater good. Jesus how many atrocities did those two words justify?

On to the reviews.

Seriouslazy: I'm glad you liked it. Hope this chapter gets that reaction.

Xagrim0912: Thanks for reminding me, I actually utilized that for one of my jokes. I would hate to be their divorce lawyer. XD

Detritus: I really appreciate the advice and I attempted to fix that problem this chapter. Though I'm sure there will be moments where All caps and multiple exclamation points can be used... NO ONE WANTS TO SOUND LIKE A RETARDED MONKEY!!! But all seriousness, thanks I hope this is to your liking.

DesiCat: That was actually the product of another rewrite. Originally I was just gonna have her stand there until Roman walked out, he calls for her and she just pops out surprising everyone. But than I realized this is the girl that chased Cinder accross a continent with Roman's hat, then chased Ruby across another into the Land of the Dead (my fan theory on the 'V8 island') So if have to be high if I wrote her just standing there not taking action.

I'm tempted to do the sweet treat friendship between Ruby and Neo. Whether or not they end up hot lesbo couple is another thing. I think I stole enough of this plot from Nardcopter.

Bile 1.0: That was more or less me justifying Ironwood's shitty anime superpower while trying my hand at some combat. Again, Originally it was not going to be but I figure whatever the hell Neo is to Roman, she's loyal.

I'm glad you liked that he chosen to side with Ozpin, I figure that Roman's self interest probably would have been enough to seal the deal eventually given time. But then I thought Neo's imminent danger would hasten it. Some people will do anything to protect the ones they care for, believe me. I hope I clarified enough that Roman and Neo are not growing a conscious. Roman wants to live, and he wants Neo to live. But I'm sure some alternate universe he still stayed adamant in his decision to side with Cinder, and is probably in the stomach of a flying shadow monster.

I'm glad you're back to writing, I look forward to your new first. Oh believe me, I'm sure by this point even Monty must be burnt out on Rwby by this point. May he rest in peace, hopefully not rolling in his grave.

I appreciate the sentiment, my sister is doing better its the aftermath we are having to deal with. Trying to find a hospital with room during a pandemic is another joy. But hopefully we're done with it. As for Walmart... yeah it's great and I'm not saying that with a gun pointed to my head. ;)

Oh well at least it helps me work on my material, but I've never seen a place that can make a caffeine addict tired before.

levelxtremedude: Thank you I hope this chapter also earns your approval. Really I don't watch the full series anymore for reasons you probably already know. Most of what is in this chapter came from the wiki, watching key points in the show to analyze fighting styles, and of course... complete imaginative thinking. I honestly don't know if I'm fit to help out with your fic, since I'm just starting out myself. I appreciate the offer though.

Anyway that's my time. I look forward to murdering the fuck out of Cinder and Adam. Oh and if anything about the 'Award Ceremony' seemed a little weird, like medals and drinks. Think of it like this, All bases are covered. See you soon.
