After registering my magical essence, Headmistress Griffin transported me outside Alfea gates. The candyfloss pink school was stained a soft orange from the rising sun and the courtyard, once filled with bustling students, was now barren. I walked through the gates and headed inside, taking a second to revel in the lack of conflicting sounds. I had only been here for a day and was already dealing with a mild headache.
I nodded to the cleaning staff, though why they were needed was beyond me. There was cleaning magic, so having cleaners seemed pointless to me. Regardless, I guess there was method to their madness, so I shoved my wandering away and strolled to my door.
Only to find 4 angry roommates sitting around in their pajamas.
"Where have you been? We've been worried sick about you" the blonde shrieked, standing up and balling her fists at her sides.
I just rolled my eyes at her melodrama. We hadn't even known each other a day. There was no chance she would genuinely be that worked up. "I told you I'd be back later," I simply replied, strolling over to our kitchenette to grab a coffee.
"Late? This is the next freaking day!" Stella ranted, throwing her arms up in the air.
"Look, Faragonda knew where I was so just chill out." I groaned, leaning against the counter while the jug boiled.
"That's all well and dandy, but what about us? You didn't even bother to text us. I don't care who you sleep with bu-"
"Firstly, I wasn't fucking anyone," I replied, internally rolling my eyes when I saw Varanda and Flora blush. "Why didn't I message you? I'd need numbers for that, Princess" I added, spitting out the word princess with as much disdain as I possibly could.
"We were just worried sweetie, maybe we can exchange numbers?" Flora suggested, clearly trying to placate us.
"Yea! It'll be the start to the best friendship ever," Varanda cheered, and I rolled my eyes this time.
"Bloom, you are wasting your breath, she doesn't want to hang out with us, even though she should be honoured to have that privilege," Stella actually flipped her hair over her shoulder. Such a drama queen.
Though something she said caught my attention. "Bloom?" I drawled, raising an eyebrow.
The red head awkwardly raised her hand with a bashful and apologetic expression on her face. "Yea… I'm Bloom."
I raised my brow and turned around to make my coffee. Once I was done, I walked over with it and pulled my feet up, before motioning for her to explain. When she was done, I sat there for a second to process. "So you lied to our faces?" I finally said.
"That's not-"I held my hand up to stop her.
"There's one thing I can't forgive, and that's lying. The only people I have any interest in being friends with here are Tecna and Flora." I said, standing up with my steaming cup. "Bloom, Varanda whatever your name is and Stella I'll be civil but we are not friends. I don't befriend liars." And without another word, I stood up with my coffee and strode back to my room, letting the door slam behind me.
"Ahh, there you are my students. Come in, come in and take a seat." A lady with long light blue hair in a long draping braid beckoned us.
I raised my eyebrow but walked in, walking up the steps to take a seat near the back of the amphitheatre. Other people walked in and took their seats, and I saw a head of golden blonde hair and fuchsia coloured bob among the throng of students. Tecna sat right at the front, and Stella caught my eyes before huffing and walking to the other end of the theatre, sitting near the back. I mentally rolled my eyes, not caring at all she didn't sit with me. I pulled my headphones over my ears, before reaching into my tight ripped jeans to pull out my Beat Pod. "huh, I guess I bought the black one today." I whispered to myself, before shrugging and hitting the play button.
I was just zoning out when two girls sat next to me; the veil of sound my music created parted to let me hear what they were saying.
"Did you get the new Starlit Dancer CD? Their song Veiled Secrets was amazing." A girl with a reddish tint to her brown hair gushed to her friend.
"No, I didn't. I haven't had a chance yet., do you have the CD?" The other girl asked, brushing her navy hair out of her eyes. At her friend's excited nod, she continued. "Can we listen to it in the dorm later?"
"Of course! We can listen while we do homework-"
"Hey, sorry to interrupt but I love Starlit Dancer, How in Magix did you get your hands on their new CD?" I asked, my eyes wide as I looked at them both.
They exchanged glances before they explained the brunette's uncle was the band's producer and gave her a demo, before looking at me with a mixture of confusion and annoyance.
"I'm sorry for jumping in like that, I'm Musa, Fairy of Music," I said, giving them a two-fingered salute. A small smile crossed the two girls' faces, seeing that my apology was genuine.
"I'm Francine, Fairy of Rivers and this is Ortensia, the Fairy of Speed with some minor sound abilities" Francine said, pointing at herself and her friend in turn.
Ortensia smiled, and I smiled back. I wanted to ask about her sound magic, but the teacher called for our attention. I smiled at the girls one last time before turning back to face the teacher, hoping this class wouldn't be a total bore.
"Welcome students!" she exclaimed, and I winced a little at her loud volume. "I am Aurelia Vespen, and you can call me either Professor Aurelia or Professor Vespen. I answer to both." Stealthily I put up the volume of my music, Aurelia's loud voice making my ears ring.
"This first week will be magic testing, so we can figure out what your true magic essence is and your current magical level is." she opened her arms wide, as if her actions made the process more exciting. "This year will be about getting in touch with your magic and learning what makes it tick, then the following year we will shake up what you know and help you grow your magic exponentially. How does that sound?" Everyone cheered, and I focused on my music, trying to ignore the sounds and the ringing sensation left in my ears.
"For now line up, when you get to the front I want you to, if you can, please summon a ball of pure magic that we can bottle up to examine what your essence is, and if there is any other kinds of magic, you might have been able to learn." She smiled at us brightly. "What are you waiting for? Line up. Starting from this row and line up in this way," she said, showing an S like shape.
I rolled by eyes and stayed where I was, watching as everyone lined up. People were chatting away, getting to know the surrounding people. I listened to Francine and Ortensia. Occasionally adding in a comment or two. I focused on my music, letting the sounds massage my ears and block out the incessant chatter. This was a major downside to my powers, I could hear everything, even things I had no interest in hearing, like my only friend and my now ex-boyfriend, that was definitely something I could've done without hearing.
Ortensia finished her sphere, the blue magic being absorbed by a clear crystal, changing the colour to match her magic. When she left, she smiled softly at me before walking to take my place. "Okay Darling, summon your magic, take a few deep breaths and shape it into a sphere." I nodded and shut my eyes, conjuring a ball of energy.
I opened my eyes and smiled, seeing the violet, fuschia and red colours swirling around hypnotically. I watched as she summoned a clear crystal, shaped like an oval. SHe muttered a few words and my magic disappeared into the crystal, changing the clear colour to the colour of my magic. She smiled at me excitedly and I gave a half smile back, before turning on my heel and walking back up to my seat.
