Chapter: 3

The Wolves passed her by and pursued after John. But that wasn't her main concern right now.

Luis had managed to turn herself onto her back and the monster's gooey body had completely covered her lower body. She could feel it holding her down and constricting her. Its body surrounded hers as it watched her from just above her stomach. Looking passively at her. She rips her arm free and grabs onto its mask with her thumb through its eyehole. The monster's eyes looked surprised and tried to pull back from her grip.

She grit her teeth and held its mask in an iron grip as she felt a change in what it was doing. It had been trying to cover her body but now it had stopped moving and was focused on her grip on its mask.

"Y-your not g-going to turn me i-into one of you, dammit! Let m-me go!" Luis shouted at it. Her other hand is still in its grip but she was trying to get it out of its goo. She felt surprised that just by grabbing it by the mask had put them into a sort of stalemate. Kind of, it was still slowly making its way up but only by a bit.

It formed an arm and grabbed her wrist to try pulling her hand from its mask. With it forming an arm and focused on her hand she felt it's hold on her other hand weaken. She rips her other hand free and grabs the other side of its mask. Its white glowing eyes widen and its body reforms and from around her.

The wolf looked like it was in a panic and she saw fear in its eyes. She rolled the both of them over and sat on top of it. Both of it's hands held her wrists and was tugging. Its feet kicking behind her as she took deep breaths to calm herself down. She looked around and saw that they were alone.

"Stop struggling." She growled at it. Surprisingly it did! It stopped kicking and tugging. It could understand her? It was sentient?

"Can you speak?" She asked it but she felt it try to shake its head.

"Alright. How about this, I let you go and you let me go?" She feels it shake its head and glares at it. She leans down so that her face is an inch from its face. Two black marks start to appear. Was it… Blushing?

"Let me go and I won't break your mask." She threatens it. She didn't know if she could actually break it. It felt kinda strong.

There is a pause and then she feels it nod.

"How do I know you aren't going to just grab me as soon as I let you go?" She asks it in suspicion. It lets go of her wrists and lays its arms out on the floor. "Okay… Im going to let go now."

She lets go of its mask and puts her hands on the soft fur of its chest. The black goo wolf blushed more as her hands felt its fur.

When it doesn't do anything she slowly stands up and backs away from it. Its glowing eyes watch her and then it sits up. She grabs her pole from the floor and runs off. The wolf watched her leave and touched its chest where her hands touched it. It felt sad that she had left it…

Luis limped as quickly as she could in the direction John went. The glass in her foot hurt like hell and was making her leave a trail of blood. She could see that the wolves had left a small trail of black goo drips on the floor. It led to an open elevator shaft. She looked up and down and felt her heart drop from how far down the elevator shaft went. She couldn't figure out where John had gone. There were other open elevator doors and it would be too risky to go looking for him.

She heads back towards the hallway that the wolf was in but it was gone too. She passes the spot and goes to the hall that the chase began at. She steps around any of the black goo and enters the door that the black wolves came from.

It was some kind of science room. Tables with lab equipment. There are more black goo puddles in here.

Luis see's something on a table. It is a photo of an adult in his 30's. He has grey hair and red eyes and wore a lab coat. He was looking bored at the camera as he stood next to a glass wall with one of those white goo monsters pressed against the glass, trying to get to him. No information is written on the front or back of the photo. Was this picture taken here in this building? Does this mean they were testing these goo monsters or something? Maybe trying to find a way to stop them?

"Mmf…" she grunted when she accidentally touched the injured part of her foot on the floor. She looks down and angles her foot to look at its underside. It was bloody and dripping with shards of glass sticking out. "I should take care of this…"

She sat down and took the time to pull out all the glass she could find. It hurt a lot as she pulled them out one at a time.

She looks up when she hears something come from the other side of the room. Her eyes meet the glowing eyes of another black goo wolf that was in an open vent. When she noticed it it disappeared deeper into the ventilation at a fast speed. Was that the same one that let her go? It's white glowing eyes looked a little different…

Taking out the last shard from her foot that she could find she gets back up with the help of her pole. Hopefully there was a first aid kit nearby. She saw where one used to be on the wall but it was gone.

There was also a phone on the wall that she wanted to try. Limping to it she picks up the phone and puts it to her ear. She dials 911 but all she got was that constant tone from it. She tried a few other numbers she knew, like her parents and friend but all she got was the tone again. She puts the phone back and moves on. The building was old like the city so it was probably just getting no signal due to old age.

Luis was feeling a bit scared now that she is alone. She hoped John was okay and that maybe they would run into each other again soon…

She entered the next room and it was dim in here. She quietly hid behind a box and peeked over it's top. There were several of those black goo wolves in the room. 7 of them. It looked like they were just standing around or lounging around lazily. One of them was sticking sheets of paper on the back of another.

The room had large boxes and tables, plus the room is dim so maybe she could maybe sneak by them? She could see that there were more puddles of their goo in this room than the last room.

She took the time to watch them and plan her route. She ignored the feeling of her blood running down her foot and making a small red puddle under her. After a minute she came up with how she is going to get across.

She moved around her cover and quietly made her way to the door across the room.

Careful not to bump the rod against anything.

When halfway across the room her foot touched one of the black goo puddles. In the corner of her eye she saw one of the wolves flinch suddenly and look her way. Catching its reaction she steps back behind a box.

Had it noticed her? How?! The wolf was facing away and she was being silent!

plap plap plap*

She heard it coming over so she shuffled a little more over.

The black goo wolf walked up to the goo puddle and she had to move around the box to stay out of its sight, making her move to the side that was out in the open. Luckily none of the other wolves were looking her way.

She peeked around the box's edge and saw the wolf looking down at the puddle she touched. It looks around and she moves back out of its sight.

Was it the puddle? It couldn't be! How would that even work? If so then how come the others didn't react? Maybe that puddle is connected to this wolf? Maybe she should test this?

The wolf begins to patrol around the area and she is forced to move and change her hiding spot. She sees another black puddle nearby. She grabs a pen that was laying on the floor and tosses it at it. It lands quietly on top of the goo and she sees another suddenly wolf flinch. She moves to a different spot as it goes to investigate the puddle.

So they were connected? How?

She shakes her head. It didn't matter how, they still reacted to it so they must be connected. That would explain what happened in the hall when the wolves somehow knew they were there. Now she had a reason to avoid the puddles, they were traps.

She makes it to the door and quietly opens it. She goes in and when she looks back she sees two of the wolves were following her blood trail. One was going the other way while the other was heading in her direction with its eyes looking down while it crawled on all fours, it's nose to the floor. Was it also cleaning up her blood? Ew…

She closes the door silently and quickly limps away. She had to keep moving and find a way to stop her bleeding else she would eventually get caught.

The room was weird. It is all black and covered in a thicker black goo. It covered everything. The walls, floor, ceiling and even all the furniture. It felt nice and soft under her feet as she limped. Luckily the room is empty of wolves.

Justs as she makes it to the next door the door she came from opens and the wolf enters. She opens the door, this room is also covered in a layer of that thick goo but it was small. She closed the door and pushed a filing cabinet in front of it. The room looked like it was an office. The back wall has a window and she could see that it was getting dark outside. She couldn't see any exits in the room.

She pushes another filing cabinet in front of the door and backs away from it. She looks around, there is always an exit! She sees a closed first aid box on the desk and grabs it by its handle.

boom!*

Luis jumps at the loud sound of the wolf trying to get through the door. The wolf must have been very strong because the metal door now had a big dent in it.

She frantically looked around for an exit. She thought about breaking the window to see if there was a ledge she could use but then she noticed a vent above the desk. Climbing on the desk she reached for the vents grill but it was just out of her reach.

boom!*

Another big dent appears on the door. Luis uses the rod to reach the grill and manages to unlatch it. It swings open, just missing her head, and hangs open. It looked big enough for her to fit in so she tossed the kit and rod up into it.

boom!*

The top corner of the door bends inward as she jumps and grabs the edge of the vents opening. She lets out a strained grunt as she lifts herself up. Her legs kicked in the air as she pulled herself up into the air vent. Moving herself back so that the opening is in front of her she grabs the grill and closes it.

boom! screeeee!*

She hears it again and the sound of bending metal. Luis grabs her stuff and starts crawling slowly to not risk it hearing her location.

After a few minutes she had put some distance and she sighs in relief. It hadn't entered the vent.

She continued on crawling at a faster pace but still tried to stay as quiet as she could. She didn't want to risk alerting any monsters. The ventilation is small and claustrophobic, leaving her with just enough room to crawl on all fours.

The vents turned into a maze of turns and dust. Weirdly there was an orange seed that she passed. How did that get in here?

Luis felt tired and thirsty.

growl…*

And hungry…

She really hoped to find some food but it was like this place had been thoroughly looted of anything considered food.

At the sound of streaming water she followed it. Crawling in the vents she soon comes across it. It is pouring down from a vent that went straight up and flowed a few feet into a grill to a room below.

Luis bathed in the water streaming down, letting it fall against her back. She stands in the vertical vent under the water and it soaked her body in its coolness. She sighs from the wonderful feeling. Cupping her hands she drinks the water. It tasted a bit off but she didn't care, she is too thirsty from all the craziness. It quenches her thirst as she gulps it down, it even helps calm her hunger.

After checking the vents for any monsters she spends a bit more time under the water and even cleans her injured foot. Its bleeding had stopped and she picked out the last of the glass, making it start bleeding a bit again. Soon she went back to crawling. Her body dripping from the water she was leaving behind.

She looked through every vent she came across and every grill she crawled over. Room after room. She yawned quietly as she was feeling tired. Most of the vents grills were open and almost all the rooms she saw were covered in black goo. Whenever she saw any goo wolves she was careful to not alert them.

ssshhllllkk*

She freezes what a mass of black goo with a white mask zoomed across her vent ahead of her followed by a second and third one. It seemed she wasn't the only one using the vents right now.

She crawled to the open vent just in front of her and looked down to check the room. Black goo covered everything but no sign of wolves. The vent is already open and she tries to climb out.

As she climbs out her wet hands slip and she lands on her back.

thump!*

The thick goo cushioned her fall slightly but it still hurt and knocked the wind out of her.

Luis laid there gasping for air and reaching behind her back. The rod had landed next to her and the first aid kit had busted open with its contents scattered on the floor around it.

When she catches her breath she groans and sits up, breathing heavily.

"Ahh… ouch…" She groans as she picks up the scattered medical items and puts them back into the kit. She closes the kit and stands up. She picks up her rod and walks over to a part of the room's wall that had a large box she could hide behind in case a monster walked in. She sits down and rests her aching back against the wall. She sets down her rod and the kit on the floor. She opens the first aid kit and begins to patch up her foot. She hissed as she dabs it with an alcohol pad and then wraps her foot in gauze.

The wound still ached but it felt better to have it properly cleaned and covered.

Luis felt tired enough that she didn't want to get up but she knew she had to. She stood up and was able to use more of her foot to walk but not on the injured part. Picking up her rod she heads for a door.

kkksssshhhtt!!*

Luis nearly jumps out of her skin when a tv on the wall suddenly turns on.

It sounded like there was a faint voice coming from it but it was too quiet with the blaringly loud static. After a second the tv turns off.

"Weird…" Luis says before passing it off and peeks into the next room.

It is a hallway with a window halfway down it. She enters and goes to the window. She tried to see the city but it was completely black out. All she could see was the beautiful starry night sky. She had never seen the stars this clearly before! But she had to tear her eyes away. She didn't have the time to stare.

Luis yawned again and felt increasingly tired and heavy. She could use some sleep right now…

She opens a door and sees a room like all the others. Thick black goo covered everything. That wasn't all tho. Cushions. Several big, round and comfy looking cushions were all around the room!

It was far too tempting for her to ignore. She closes the door being herself when she enters and feels one of them. Before she could stop herself she lays on it.

Luis lets out a moan from how good the cushion felt. It was big enough that her body fit on top of it perfectly. She stares at the ceiling as she relaxes and her eyes slowly close.
