Kim couldn't support her body, Jay holding onto her to prevent her fall. She was raked with sobs and helpless against what was going on.

"I need you to breathe Kim." Jay rubbed circles against her back. "He's got the best working on him, he'll be okay." He looked at Voight as he settled her into a nearby chair.

"He needs to be okay." Kim's breathing was rapid, but Jay was kneeling in front of hey, trying to make her breathe with him.

"Voight is going to see what he can find out; I'll call Will okay?" Kim could only nod, her world spinning out of its axis.

"Trudy is on her way up with Kev, the nurse can't tell us much of anything." Everything happened so fast that the only people who knew what was really going on were in the OR with Adam.

"We need to find something out soon." Jay pressed when he stood, keeping an eye on Kim. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed his brother. The frown on his forehead wasn't something Voight liked to see. "Well, you need to make time." He growled into his phone before explaining what was going on and hanging up. "He's trying to free himself to try to find out what's going on."

"What happened?" Platt wheeled Kevin on the unit.

"Bleed in the chest." Voight relayed and the two looked at Kim before Platt wheeled Kevin to her.

"He's going to be okay."

"You don't know that Kev." Kim sobbed, her face still in her hands

"He's too stubborn to die." He pulled her hand away from her face and linked his fingers with hers. "We'll get through this together."

"Will, do you know anything?" Kim looked up when she heard Jay say his brother's name.

"I don't know much but Conor is in there with the team who operated on him the first time. I'll go try to find out what I can find out."

"Thank you." Kim said. Voight left with Trudy, leaving Kim with Kevin and Jay so they could keep the open communication channel with Will going.

Minutes turned into hours and still Will hadn't returned with an update. He had texted Jay a few times to tell him that the surgery was still going on, complications making it take more time. He kept those complications vague and that wasn't helping Kim in any way, but Jay doubted that details would help her stay emotionally sane. At this point, she would need to lay eyes on the man to be able to breathe again.

"What is taking so long?" She finally stood, surprising the boys from the somber mood they were in.

"I'm sure someone will come talk to us soon Burgess." Kevin tried to reassure her.

"When Kev huh? Because it's been hours. We don't know what's going on, or if he's even alive." He could see the distress in his best friend's face.

"You can't think like that Kim." Jay tried to calm her down, but right now, she was agitated and needed answers.

"Dr. Parker, Conor." Kim suddenly pushed past both guys and went to meet the doctor, Conor Rhodes standing next to him. "What's going on?

"Let's go in Adam's room Kim." Conor gave her a sympathetic smile and she followed both doctors, Jay pushing Kevin behind them.

"Okay, we're here, what's going on?" Kim crossed her arms protectively over her chest, her eyes demanding the truth.

"The bleed was severe, so we had to initiate the massive transfusion protocol. That put a lot of stress on Adam's heart and he coded three times on the table." Kim's legs became Jell-O and the only reason she didn't crash directly on the floor was because she had been leaning on the bed-side table in the room.

"Please tell me that he's not." She choked on the emotion of fear that was threatening to swallow her whole, the tears that she had tried to keep at bay were now sliding down her cheeks.

"He's alive and he's in recovery but he will stay intubated until we are sure that he's out of the woods." Dr Parker explained.

"And what about his heart? Is it going to be weaking going forward?" Jay questioned, his hands deep in his pockets. It was a lot to take in for the trio and everyone needed to have facts.

"We are asking for a cardiology consult when he wakes up but until then, when he's going to be able to leave recovery, he will be wheeled back here, and we will monitor him very closely."

"We'll take good care of him Kim." Conor placed a hand on her shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze.

"Thanks." Dr. Parker left, Conor staying behind.

"He did good in there, considering." He promised them.

"Dr. Rhodes, I need you to discharge me." Kevin demanded.

"You're still under watch for concussion protocol Kev, I can't do that yet."

"Come on doc. I need to help the team find who did this to me and my partner." Conor looked between Kim and Jay, who nodded to a silent understanding between the two, before looking back to Kevin.

"I want to do some tests first and then talk to your Sargent because one thing I won't sign off on is you returning out there in the condition you are in. Do I make myself clear?"

"10-4 doc."

"I'll stay here so that Adam isn't alone." Kim pushed her thumb between her teeth.

"Will you be okay here by yourself?" Jay questioned her.

"Yeah, I'll be okay, you go with Kev. Keep me updated?"

"We'll swing by before we leave."

"And I'll be hovering all evening, I have rounds to do and patients to see until ten tonight." Conor added.

"Thanks for saving his life Conor."

"He's family." He offered the simple explanation before the three of them left to take care of discharging Kevin. Kim took deep breaths and went to splash some cold water on her face. Her eyes were bloodshot from crying and she could see red blotches on her skin from the stress the situation was putting on her system, but she needed to be strong for Adam. This setback was surely going to extend his rehabilitation and she was determined to be by his side for the time.

Kevin was wheeled into his room and Jay hovered around him as he sat on the bed, Dr. Rhodes settling himself in front of him to start doing tests. The light he flashed in Kevin's eyes annoyed him, but the pupils were responding normally.

"Does your head hurt?"

"No."

"Dizziness, blurry vision?"

"All good doc."

"Let's try with standard questions." Kevin nodded. "Name, age, where you live?" Kevin recited the information as directed. "Who's your partner?"

"Adam Ruzek and right now I'd really like to catch the guy if you don't got any other questions."

"One last thing and I'm letting you go. Mind walking the line?" Kevin stood from his bed and walked the line between the tiles on the floor, adding the standard alcohol fingers to nose test to Rhode's request.

"We good now doc?"

"Yeah, but I mean it, you work this case in house."

"Will do."

"I'll make sure he does." Jay smirked. He knew he'd have trouble containing his bigger partner, but they all needed to focus now to be able to crack this case and find out who had rammed into them.

"You are good to go my friend. Anything jumps out though and I want you back here to get checked out."

"Yeah." Kevin shook his hand with his good one and he and Jay went to see Kim before going back to the district.

It took about ten minutes before Adam was wheeled back into the room he had been in before the surgery. Kim watched the staff hook him back up to the vent that was breathing for him. IF she thought he looked pale and small in the bed before, it was worse now. He was back in a hospital gown, but she knew that under that, his chest had been cracked open to find the bleed and repair it. The scar would be a reminder forever that he had beaten the odds and that he was alive. She only hoped that he would still be able to do what he loved after this. She pulled a chair next to his bed and sat in it, taking his hand in hers.

"I'm right here baby." She kissed his knuckles. "I'm still right here." She hoped that he could hear her, she needed him to.

"Her Burgess." The boys poked their heads through the room.

"Yeah." She looked at them with watery eyes. "Glad to see you vertical." She said from her chair.

"We'll find the asshole that did this to us."

"Will you be okay alone Kim? I can call Platt to come back if you want." Jay offered, knowing they were close.

"I'll be okay. Please just catch them."

"We will. Hang in there and take care of him."

"I will." Kevin kissed the top of her head before leaving and Kim was alone with Adam again. Day turned into night and Adam didn't wake up. It was past visiting hours and they had allowed Kim to stay at Adam's bedside, knowing their history and under Conor's directives. Kevin had texted her that they were close to catching the perps and that the unit would be by in the morning if they did. She stayed on the chair at Adam's bedside and eventually fell asleep out of sheer exhaustion.

Kevin was the first to walk into the ICU the following morning with Jay. They had caught the guys and they had been charged. They found Kim still sleeping and Adam's condition hadn't changed since the previous night. They had questioned the nursing staff who assured them that he was stable, and that Dr. Parker and Dr. Rhodes would be in to check on him in a little bit.

"Hey Burgess." Kevin placed a hand on her shoulder, the action jolting her awake.

"Is he awake?" She looked around frantically and found Adam in the same position as the previous night.

"Sorry I scared you. I got you coffee." He handed her the hot cup, and she took a sip before sitting back down.

"Did you guys catch them?"

"Yes, they're in lock-up until we transfer them."

"Good. Hear that babe? The team caught the guys who did that to you so you can wake up now."

"This sleeping beauty act ain't a good look on your brother." Jay chuckled at the reference.

"Bullpen's quiet without you Ruzek." The atmosphere in there was different without his wide mouth and stupidly funny comebacks.

"Don't strike his ego too much, he'll never go through another door again." Platt deadpanned as she walked in with Voight.

"Do you guys know what's happening next?" Hailey questioned as she walked in last.

"We're still waiting for Conor to come by to check on him."

"I just need a little bit of room and I'll check him out." Conor walked in with a smile. "The nurse told me he did good last night.

"Everybody in the waiting room except Burgess. Dr. Rhodes will update us after." No one argued with the desk Sargent and they filed out of the room and in the small waiting area adjacent to the unit.

"So, what are you looking at?"

"His stats are getting better so that's a good sign but not quite where we want them." He untied the gown to look at his surgical scar. "The scar is a little bit red but that's quite normal considering he was in the OR just last night."

"When do you think that he can breathe on his own?"

"I want to use caution, taking the breathing tube out too soon wouldn't be good for him either. We'll keep an eye on him for the rest of the day and we'll go from there. He's doing good Kim, I promise." He looked at her with a smile, knowing how scared she must be right now.

"Thanks."

"I'll go update the others." He patted her shoulder and was out of the door. She was happy to have some quiet time with Adam, so she sat on the side of his bed and ran her fingers through his hair. It was starting to get too long, and he would need to get a cut soon but right now they were soft between her fingers. She needed to touch him to make sure he was still with them, her other hand holding his. The team came in rotation and offered words of encouragement to Kim before leaving to get some sleep, leaving Kevin and Kim alone with Adam.

"So, we're working on his timetable." Kevin had taken the chair on the other side of the bed.

"He always got to be the center of the attention." She smirked, exchanging a look with Kevin. "But would you please not take your sweet time to wake up, I really need you to get better so I can give you hell for scaring the shit out of me." She admonished him.

"Hear that Ruz? She wants you to wake up so you can start annoying the crap out of her just so she can yell at you. If I were you, I'd stay asleep." Kim's saucer sized eyes cut Kevin's joke short but one movement in her peripheral vision and the air caught in Kim's lungs mid breath. She knew she was tired, but her eyes were on his hand, wondering if her mind was playing tricks on her or not.

A/N: So Adam had a rough go but did Kim really see movement in his hand or is it just her mind playing tricks on her? Please take a few seconds to review before you go, your words always mean the world to me. - Sarra
