By the time the sun was setting, the pack had reached a source of nomads land. With Hope out of the way, Nightlight could now fully focus. Pandora was at his side as they were walking, and she looked up at him. Was this really the same wolf she saw back there?
The wolf she claimed to love? "Nightlight...was that really necessary? You know, what you did to Hope?" she asks. Nightlight was silent, but his eyes were filled with guilt, and what looked like sadness.
He sighed then replied, "No, but I couldn't help it...she pissed me off... I normally don't get that aggressive, and I'm sorry," he turned to look at the others. "And to all of you. I'm sorry you had to see that."
"Don't apologize Nightlight, it happens to everyone. Besides, Hope had it coming to her. She was crazy anyways." Dagger says. "I agree, we all have those moments. So don't feel bad."
Sunny adds, she gave a shy smile. Nightlight smiled back. "Thanks guys." he turned back to the trail; along the way the group explained to Mulch, Ashton and Crow about Hope's little... "episode". They were all shocked, not at what Nightlight did to her, but the fact that she attacked Pandora out of the blue, all because she was rejected by a male that was already claimed.
Nightlight saw something up ahead, it looked to be a stone with what looked like a painting. He told the pack to stop for a brief second as he went to look at it. "It's a painting of what looks to be a giant field.
Which I'm guessing that's where we have to go next. But I'm thinking, we can go to the safety of the trees up ahead, so that we aren't so vulnerable in the open, and rest for the night. We're all tired, I'm sure of that."
He turned to face them, they all yipped and barked agreements. Nightlight nodded, and they made it to a small patch of trees, where they all separated into their patrol and hunting groups. But Pandora joined Nightlight away from the pack. They walked up a small knoll, getting a view of the valley be on.
As they laid down together, Pandora rested her head into Nightlight's neck, and he nuzzled her in return. Nightlight smiled, but pulled away for a moment; he looked up at the sky. The orange and pinkish sky was slowly getting darker in color, and the first stars were shining. It made him think of his mother, as he looked down at the ground, a small whine escaped his muzzle.
It was so quiet that Pandora hardly heard it. "Something wrong love?" Pandora asks. Nightlight didn't answer, but slowly nodded. "If you don't want to talk about it it's fine." she says. "No, no it's okay. It just...brings back memories...memo that still hasn't me..." he says. He took a deep breath, and as Pandora studied his face, she saw hurt, loss, pain, and grief.
There was a single tear coming from his eye, which Pandora gently licked away. "It all started 2 years ago…. You see my mother, Twilight was the alpha female of my old pack at one time. She was strong, brave and noble. She was well known by the other packs, and she was a true warrior. One day, as a battle was taking place, she got critically injured and collapsed out of blood loss.
She woke up in a stranger's den, where she met a rogue. His name was Eclipse, and little did I know that he would soon be my father. Unlike most rogues, my father was kind and gentle. But he also had the strength to put those who tried to overthrow him in their place.
Afterr a few weeks, they started to have feelings for one another. When my mother returned to the den, she had my father at her side, claiming him as her mate and the Alpha Male. But their happiness wouldn't last forever.
A few months later, they had my brothers and I; and since I was first born, I was going to be the future alpha. But we were attacked one day, The Haven Field Pack came in a frenzied, merciless mess. They killed many pack members, they also killed my mother. They-" He paused as his voice caught in his throat. His face twisted into anger, but he took a deep breath.
"They made me watch...how I was forced to have my eyes locked on her as she got torn limb by limb. Her screams and cries for mercy echoed in my head for months. I wanted nothing more than to kill the monsters responsible. That was all I thought about. But I-I couldn't, I would've just ended up being like one of them."
He suppressed a growl, his upper lip curled back as he scratched his claws into the soil. For Pandora, she never thought someone could go through so much pain. No wolf should have suffered from something so cruel and dark.
And yet, here was Nightlight. A wolf who never expressed what he went through. He definitely hid it well. "Nightlight…" she whispered. He looked away, trying to hide his face. "Nightlight...look at me,"
Pandora used her soft tone. He hesitated, but looked at her. She saw how his eyes spoke forhim. She saw everything in their depths. She leaned in closer, and gently pressed her lips to his. When she felt him relax into it, her heart filled with pride. She pulled back and looked him in the eyes. "Why'd you do that?" he asked. She smiled, her eyes lit up slightly.
"You needed to be shown that there's someone in this world who cares deeply for you. Nightlight I love you, and I'm so sorry you had to go through all that pain. You deserved better than that, but yet...you didn't let it affect who you are as a wolf. And I'm grateful for that...I'm happy that I have you in my life. I'll be here for you...that's a promise…"
Nightlight stared down at her. Her words were so sincere and truthful. He lowered his head, and pressed it against hers. He closed his eyes and sighed. "You have no idea how much that means to me…" he wrapped his tail around Pandora's small flank, pulling her closer to him.
"And you still have no idea how much I love you…"
