Klaus supposed it was pointless to lie to himself as he cut through the stalls along the beach. He was definitely coming back this way to see if he could spot that Dave guy again, and not even because he was worried about falling into one of his sand pits.
He had to admit he was curious, wanting to know what about him felt so familiar, why he was so drawn to him. He was feeling better today, so this time maybe he could hang around a bit longer and get to know him. And, if it did turn out to be nothing, at least it was a cute guy, so really there were no down sides. After all, what did he have to lose?
It turned out to be easier than he thought it would be to find him, because he nearly ran into Dave as he came around a corner. It seemed like he'd been expecting him, because he greeted Klaus with a large grin, holding two snow cones.
"Hey," Dave said, holding one out for him. His shirt was unbuttoned and Klaus liked to think he'd done that for him as well, even though it was probably just because it was so hot out today.
"Don't tell me you've been buying two every day on the off chance I came by again again," Klaus said, accepting it. "Or do you do this for everyone?"
"Oh, no," he said with a laugh. "I just saw you climbing over the fence. It isn't as hidden as it seems. You should try the one on the other side of the parking lot, less chance someone might spot you."
"Good to know," Klaus said, before indicating the snow cones. "So, what's the occasion?"
"What can I say? I've never been great at flirting, so I thought I'd cheat a little bit."
"Oh," Klaus said with a grin, shifting easily into a more alluring pose, leaning slightly towards him. "We're flirting now, are we?" This was definitely going to be easier than he thought.
"Shit, are we not?" Dave asked, clearly panicking. "I thought you were using a line on me when you dropped that comment about having met before."
"I'd like to think I have smoother lines than that," Klaus said, lowering his voice, pouring on the charm. "Care to find out?"
"Yeah, okay, I see what you mean," Dave said, turning bright red and Klaus couldn't help but grin in satisfaction. "Definitely smooth. Perhaps— even too smooth?"
"You take that back," Klaus said in mock-offense, making him laugh.
"Oh boy," Dave said, rubbing his face. "I just realized how creepy this all must look. Some guy you met once, and probably don't even remember, showing up out of the blue like this."
"Hey, I got a snow cone out of the deal," Klaus said, waving a hand dismissively. "So how about we just forget all that and go back to the flirting?"
"Deal," Dave said with a relieved sign and Klaus wondered if he was always this easy to read or if it was just part of their banter here. "I'm glad you're so understanding."
"Or I just really like flirting," he winked.
"David, you had better be working and not slacking off!" an angry voice yelled from somewhere nearby in the throng of people around them.
"Ah shit, I should probably go," Dave said. "Hey, I can't tonight, I've got a— thing, but are you doing anything tomorrow night? I get off at 9, you can pick me up then and I can show you the nightlife around here, like where to get the worst hotdogs in the state. But at least I can get us some free booze."
"Sounds intriguing, and I never turn down free booze," Klaus said, pretending to consider. It wasn't like he was gonna turn the guy down. He seemed fun, and he'd gone out with people for less. "I might be able to clear my schedule for an evening."
With a fist pump, Dave turned and headed back to his job and Klaus couldn't help but laugh again.
