Arizona was running. She didn't know what from and she couldn't see where too. Just running alone in the dark. Her body ached and she was so tired, and then she felt it. Her body collapsed as her leg gave way, the pain she knew all too well. Pins and needles covered her body, every movement had a consequence. She was drowning in pain. She couldn't see, she couldn't move and the space around her seemed to be closing in. Another gut wrenching shock of pain shot through her body, her leg, which hurt so bad after all these years must be gushing with blood. The amount of pain it was causing her, it must be killing her, Arizona was going to die, alone in the dark. No one would know how or where she died and she would become a distant memory. The invisible walls closed in further and the already suffocating darkness became heavier and heavier.
"Arizona" she heard her name being called. I'm here, she tried to speak but nothing came out. Please help me. She repeated in the silence.
"Arizona wake up"
"ARIZONA" Callie screamed as she watched the blonde's restless body move skittishly in her sleep. She'd had her hands around her own throat, Callie was now holding both of Arizona's arms in an attempt to stop her from choking herself in her sleep, Arizona suffered from night terrors a lot after the plane crash, Callie hadn't seen one this bad since the first few days after they had come back from the woods.
"Arizona" she called out again. "Wake up, you're having a nightmare. Arizona"
The blonde jolted awake. She felt a rush of pain in her head, Her eyes scanned the room confused on her whereabouts, she felt her heart speed up and she began hyperventilating. Her vision still blurry from sleep she could see Callie standing over her, holding her. "Shh it okay" Callie soothed staring into Arizona's eyes, blue pools staring back at her. "You were having a nightmare, you're in the hospital" Callie watched as the panic grew more apparent on Arizona's face, she couldn't breathe. Callie instinctively pulled Arizona into a seated position and climbed behind her on the bed leaning her body up against her own so Arizona could feel Callie's strong stable heartbeat in her back.
She'd been here before with Arizona, and even though they had spent almost a year apart she knew how to sooth her. "That's it, breathe slowly, you got it" Callie encouraged as Arizona's heart rate began to decrease. Callie rocked them both slowly, almost cradling her ex-wife. Arizona let out a whimper, her body trembled but Callie didn't leave her side. Arizona had turned and pressed her face into Callie's chest as she cried. Callie's dress from the night before soaking up her tears as she fought to hold back her own hating to see the tiny frame in so much pain. Periodically Callie would speak calmly to remind her that it had been a dream and that she was safe in the arms of her touch and after a few minutes she felt Arizona's body really relax and heard her breathing return to normal.
Callie moved out from behind Arizona and instead laid next to her not letting go of Arizona's hand which she had been gripping so tightly from the moment she had woken up. She pushed back some of Arizona's sweaty hair being mindful of the cuts on her head. The blonde held her eyes closed tightly trying to process everything, thoughts spun around in her brain.
Why am I in the hospital? My head really hurts? Callie is here, why is Callie here?
"Arizona" Callie spoke, interrupting her train of thought. Arizona's eyes slowly fluttered open and she looked at Callie with a mixture of feelings spread across her face. Shame, confusion, guilt. A lot of guilt. "Is there anything you need right now, anything I can get you? Does anything hurt?"
Everything hurt.
"H..head" Arizona choked, squinting her eyes. Callie pressed the call button on the remote attached to Arizona's bed and shortly after an intern arrived.
"Can you dim the lights in here and pass me a cup of water" Callie demanded softly, almost whispering, Arizona's head must be pounding. The intern did just as Callie had asked before leaving again. Callie brought the cup of water up to Arizona's lips and let her take slow sips from the cup before placing it on the cabinet beside the bed and turning back to Arizona.
"I'm sorry Callie" Arizona finally spoke in a raspy whisper.
"What for?" Callie looked at her, her face and voice calm. She wasn't mad. She'd almost forgotten that she had started the night with another woman and never expected that she would be in a hospital bed with her ex wife early hours the next morning, but she wasn't mad. She wanted to be here.
"For making you come, I.. you're.."
"I'm your next of kin" Callie cut her off "don't be sorry about it Arizona" she watched a single tear fall down the blondes cheek. Arizona was visibly hurting and Callie hated it. She always knew when Arizona was in pain, emotionally. She'd seen it that day in the counsellor's office, the day she left. She wished she hadn't left, because everyday since she'd seen Arizona become less and less like herself in an attempt to give Callie what she wanted, what she needed. "Do you need anything" Callie asked her again,
"I..I hate to ask..b...but" Arizona stuttered.
"Don't be frightened, just ask me, it's okay" Callie soothed.
"Could you, hold me" Arizona looked embarrassed at her request. "I'm sorry.. I shouldn't-"
"No, Arizona, It's okay, I'll stay as long as you want me too, okay?"
"Please just, hold me and don't let go" the fear shook in her voice as she spoke, Callie kicked off her heel and made herself comfortable next to the blonde and pulled her into a tight embrace gently rocking her until she fell asleep. Callie pondered her thought, she really didn't mind being here with her. Something almost felt right about being in bed with her again. Sleeping next to her again.
