"I NEED HELP! DIPPER!" Mabel shouts, bursting through the door of their shared bedroom. Dipper drops the book he was holding and looks up, alarmed. What happened?! Is Mabel hurt?! Is the house on fire?! Dipper sniffs the air and doesn't smell any smoke or anything, so at least his final speculation can be ruled out. But if not a fire, then what could the emergency be?
Dipper refocuses his attention on Mabel and notices she's frantically waving around a piece of paper. Dipper lets out a sigh of relief and his heart slows down. So not a life-threatening problem. Dipper grabs his book again and returns to reading. Whatever Mabel wants will have to wait. Right now Perry Johnson is creating a tidal wave on the bridge to Manhattan, successfully murdering hundreds of the titans troop!
"Gah!" Dipper shouts in surprise, as something jumps on the end of his bed. Only the Mabel-sized thing miscalculated and landed right on Dippers ankles. "Ow! Mabel, what is it?"
"I need your help! This is a life or death situation!"
Dipper rolls his eyes, suddenly knowing exactly what's going on. "I'm not doing your math homework again."
"Not do, just help. I don't understand any of this."
"Well, that's your problem, not mine. Maybe if you were paying attention instead of staring at Kevin all day long you would know what you're supposed to do." Dipper scowls and returns to his book. He tries to concentrate on it, but can't when he can feel Mabel's glare trying to burn a hole through him. Finally he turns his attention back to her and just raises an eyebrow.
"Please! If I don't turn this homework in first thing tomorrow I will fail my math class and have to repeat the year!" Dipper looks at Mabel in surprise, she doesn't usually resort to begging so this must really mean a lot to her. Maybe Dipper can help her this one time...no! Dipper, snap out of it! Mabel got herself into this mess, she can get herself out.
"Not. My. Problem." Dipper rolls over so his back is facing Mabel, ending the conversation.
"Fine," Mabel says, anger and something else hidden in her voice. Dipper hears her stomp off and slam the door behind her. Good riddance, Dipper thinks as Mabel storms out of the bedroom. Finally, some peace and quiet!
Mabel can handle her own problems. She's a big girl now. He growls as the dark thoughts fill his head, too frustrated to think clearly. Why does Mabel have to be so dependent? Why can't she just pull her head out of the clouds - clouds full of boys - and focus on important things, like school! Dipper pouts and settles back into his bed, opening his book once more, now where was he? He tries to get back into the reading zone, but it's pointless.
Dipper places his book on his nightstand and turns off the lights. He rolls over and snuggles underneath the blankets. If he can't read anymore, he may as well get some shut-eye.
Mabel sighs, setting up her annoying math stuff at the kitchen table. She sets Mr. Snuffles - a stuffed animal she grabbed on her way out of her room - next to her for moral support. She wraps herself in a blanket and gets to work. Okay Mabel, she thinks, opening up her math textbook, You can do this.
The hours tick by and Mabel's no closer to finishing than when she started. Why do fractions and decimals have to be so hard? Mabel groans and bangs her head against the table. Maybe that will fix her stupid brain and make her understand. All that succeeds in, is giving her a massive headache. A few tears escape Mabel's eyes. Why is she like this? Why is she so stupid? Why can't she be more like Dipper? Mabel squeezes Mr. Snuffles close to her chest and lets a sob escape her throat. She did this to herself. If she had just paid attention instead of looking at dumb Kevin then she wouldn't be in this situation. Then Mabel wouldn't be one mess-up from failing.
Mabel sobs and sobs and sobs and sobs, her tears soaking into her sweater. She hasn't even bothered to change into pajamas yet. Her eyes start to feel heavy, so Mabel lays her head on her notebook, tears still falling down her face. She finds it harder and harder to stay awake. What time is it even? 11pm? 12am? 1am? She doesn't know. Mabel tries to lift her head back up and keep working, but she can't. All she can do is lay here and cry.
How pathetic is that? Mabel chuckles wetly, though there is no humor to it. Dipper is right. Mabel really is just a stupid boy-crazy girl. Her stupid dumb brain and its need to fall in love with every boy she sees. There is no reason Mabel shouldn't pass this class. If her brother can pass with flying colors, then so could she. So if she does need to repeat the year, then it's entirely her fault.
No. Focus Mabel. The night isn't over yet, there is still time to make this right. Mabel slaps her face a few times, trying to wake herself up. She stares hard at the page, willing the problems to solve themselves. It doesn't work. UGH! WHY IS MATH SO HARD?!
Mabel bangs her head against the table once more and doesn't even try to pick it back up. She closes her eyes and succumbs to the darkness of sleep. Maybe the morning will help clear her brain…
Dipper wakes up from the light sleep he was in, his mind racing. Maybe changing positions will help. He shifts, trying to get more comfortable, once again relaxing deep in the covers. Five minutes later he shifts positions again. Then again…and again…and again. He tosses and turns and all the while the scene from early plays on repeat in his head. Was he too harsh on Mabel? Oh gosh he hopes he didn't hurt her. Dipper would never forgive himself if her feelings were seriously hurt.
Biting his lip, Dipper sits up. He looks to the bed across the room and sees a lump under Mabel's blankets. Dipper lets out a breath of relief he didn't even realize he was holding. She must have come in whilst he was trying to fall asleep. What time is it anyway? Dipper glances at the clock to his left and sees that the time reads: 1:32am. Yeah, no way Mabel is still working on homework. With a clear mind, Dipper lays back down and feels at peace.
Dipper's finally drifting off when he hears a wet, gasping sort of noise. He waits and listens, thinking it could have come from outside the house. The sound happens again and Dipper gets out of bed, certain that the noise came from downstairs. He walks out of the room, not sparing Mabel a second glance. He waits in the hallway for another sound to reach his ears. He hears nothing for a few minutes, and starts to think he imagined the whole thing.
BANG!
Dipper jumps at the sudden racket, his heart racing. What if someone's robbing the house? Did his mom and dad hear that? Should he call the police? No, think rationally. You have to figure out what this threat is before anything else. His curiosity piqued, and his adrenaline keeping him on high alert, Dipper decides to investigate.
Tiptoeing down the stairs Dipper sees that a light is on in the kitchen. He gets closer and spots a lone figure sitting at the kitchen table, the light illuminating their silhouette only. Who on earth could be up at this hour? A weird feeling settles in Dipper's stomach as he keeps watching them. They have their back facing him and are wearing something bulky, so he's not sure who the person is.
It's probably his mom or dad, right? If that were a robber, they wouldn't be just sitting there waiting for something to happen. However, the feeling in Dipper's stomach gets stronger, and he decides to sit on the stairs and wait for a little bit to see who it is.
Quickly, Dippers eyes start to get heavy, and he feels himself nodding off. He tries to shake his head to wake himself up but it doesn't work. He can't seem to fight the darkness slowly creeping its way into his consciousness. He's going to fall asleep no matter what, so it may as well be in his warm, comfortable bed. Dipper groggily gets up and starts to head back upstairs.
He's halfway up the stairs when a sound stops him in his tracks. It sounds like a sob? Is someone down there crying? Feeling reawakened, Dipper goes back downstairs. This time he walks closer to the figure, but still far enough away that they won't see him. He can make out papers strewn around the person, and notebooks opened and scribbled in. But what really hits Dipper is the words they are muttering to themself.
"Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid."
Dippers heart plummets as he recognizes the voice. But he thought Mabel was upstairs asleep? Creeping closer he realizes that she's sitting with math textbooks open all around her. Oh. She must have stayed down here and kept on working. So…she really is worried about failing and wasn't exaggerating. Now Dipper just feels horrible.
BANG!
Dipper jumps, ripped from his thoughts as the bang startles him. He looks up and sees Mabel face-down on the table. He rushes forward, not caring if she sees him, to make sure she's alright. He lets out a sigh of relief when he realizes she's sound asleep. Next he looks to her math homework, and sees sheets of scribbled out work. Well then, Dipper will just have to do something about that.
An hour and a half later, and Dipper is finishing up the final problem. It definitely wasn't easy, he'll give Mabel that. He gathers all the papers and textbooks together and places them in a neat, orderly pile in the middle of the table. He grabs a scrap piece of paper and writes a quick 'I'm sorry :(' on it before setting it on the top of the pile. Dipper stands up and stretches, then re-wraps Mabel in her blanket. It must have fallen off while Dipper was working.
"Don't worry," Dipper whispers to his sleeping sister, giving her a quick hug, "I won't let you fail this class, or any of your other classes."
I hope you liked that chapter! If you did please leave a review or something, that would be awesome! We only got four more chapters to go! See you on Thursday!
