A few days later Erin had called Shelby to stop by the 21st district. Shelby was off shift that day so she headed right in after hanging up with Erin.
Shelby walked into the 21st district carrying a bag of donuts. "Morning Trudy." Shelby sat the bag on the counter in-front of the sergeant.
Trudy eyed the bag. "Is that for me?" Shelby nodded her head. Trudy took the bag and pulled out a donut. "What can I do for you Jensen?"
"Erin called. She needed me to come in."
"Alright I'll buzz you up."
"Thank You Trudy." Shelby walked towards the cage door. Trudy hit the buzzer and Shelby headed upstairs.
When she entered the bullpen it was empty. Shelby looked around but couldn't find anyone. Shelby was getting ready to call Erin when Adam came walking in.
"Oh hey Shelby. Erin mentioned you'd be by." Adam went over to his desk and sat down the files he was carrying .
"Yeah she didn't tell me what for though."
"She wants you to look at some mugshots see if you may recognize someone from the scene. People who set fires usually like to sit around and watch."
"Okay sounds good. But the fires are just to destroy evidence. I don't think he gets any gratification from it."
Adam laughed. "That's exactly what Erin said but Voight wants it done anyways." Adam set out some photos for Shelby to look at on his desk. He then pulled up a chair and motioned for Shelby to take a seat.
Shelby sat down and Adam opened the folder. Shelby began examining every photo trying to see if someone caught her attention. But she was coming up short.
"I'm sorry Adam but none of this are triggering anything."
"That's alright it was worth a shot."
Shelby continued to look at the photos. She then found herself coming back to the same photo. She held the photo in her hand and just stared at the guy. He seemed familiar to her but she couldn't place him.
"Do you recognize him?"
"I don't know. His face feels familiar but I can't place him. It's one of those feelings."
"I totally get it. Up here Voight is very much a go with your gut type. So what is your gut saying?"
Shelby thought for another moment. "Check this guy out. I can't figure out where I recognize him from. It could be something. Could be nothing." Shelby handed the photo back to Adam.
"Alright we can do that." Adam put the picture on the board with a question mark next to it. He put the pen down and turned back to Shelby. "So I was getting ready to go grab some lunch. Would you care to join?"
"Sure I could go for some food."
"Perfect." Adam grabbed his coat. He then led Shelby outside to his car. He opened the passenger side door and Shelby slipped in. Adam got in the drivers seat and then they headed to lunch.
They had a really good time together. They talked and laughed a lot. shared stories of their fathers. Shelby talked a little about when she use to live in Chicago but not to much.
After lunch Adam brought her back to 21st district. He walked her too her car.
"I had a really nice time."
"Me too." The two were staring into each other's eyes.
"Can we do it again sometime?"
Shelby thought for a moment. She knew she didn't want a relationship but there was no harm in dating. "Sure. I'd like that Adam."
"Alright I'll call you later." Adam opened her car door for her.
"Sounds good." Shelby slipped into her car and Adam closed her door. Adam stepped back and allowed her to drive off.
Adam headed back inside the district and up to intelligence. When he got up there everyone else was back and working on trying to find a suspect.
Jay noticed Adam entering the bullpen. "Dude where you been?"
"Lunch with Shelby. Wanted to talk to her about the fires in Kansas City." Jay was giving Adam this look. Adam ignored him and walked over to the board and pointed to the photo he had put up earlier. "Shelby said this guy seemed familiar but she wasn't for sure. Said we should at least check."
The intelligence team got to work. Trying to see if the guy Shelby seemed to recognized was the person committing the murders.
Shelby was enjoying a glass of wine and watching true crime documentaries. Erin had invited her to go out with Jay and her but she declined. The last couple shifts have been rough and she just wanted a quiet night at home.
There was a knock at Shelby's door. She paused her show and got up. She wasn't expecting anyone to come over. She looked through the peephole and saw Adam standing there. A smile spread across her face.
She unlocked and opened the door. "Hey Adam. "
"Hey Shelby. Erin told me you didn't want to come out so I thought I'd grab us a pizza and a 6 pack?" Adam held up the food and beer.
Shelby smiled. "Well I can't say no to pizza and beer." Shelby stepped aside to allow Adam to enter her apartment. Shelby closed the door and went to the kitchen to grab some plates. "We can sit on the couch."
Adam sat the pizza on the coffee table and Shelby handed him a plate. They both took a seat. Adam opened a couple beers and handed one to Shelby.
"Thanks." Shelby took the beer and grabbed a slice of pizza. "So any new leads?"
"No nothing. It's like the guy went quiet. Like he knew we were looking into the fires more carefully." Adam took a drink of her beer. "But that guy you recognized. He lived in Kansas City at the time of the previous murders."
"Really?"
"Yes. His name is Damon Markus." Shelby stopped mid bite and stared at Adam. "What? Does that name mean something?"
Shelby sat her food down on the table and grabbed her phone and started looking through her photos.
"Shelby what is it?"
Shelby found the photo she was looking for. And showed it to Adam. It was a picture of Markus with another female.
"Is that?"
"Yes." I can't believe I didn't recognize him. But he has changed a bit since I last saw him. It's been 5 years since my last encounter with him."
"How do you know him?"
"The girl in the picture. Her name is Tracy and they were dating. Tracy was a good friend of mine. A nurse at KU medical center."
"Okay?"
"Tracy was killed in a fire 5 years ago. I responded to that fire. I couldn't save her."
"But why is he going after underage girls that are sex workers?"
"Markus went crazy after she was killed. They never found out what happened. I worked for months trying to find answer and got nothing. Markus dropped off the map shortly after. Then 3 years later the killings started in Kansas City."
"Do you think he is capable of doing something like this?"
"Honestly Adam I barely knew the guy. Tracy and him were very quiet people. Didn't want anyone in their business."
"Okay. I'll tell the team tomorrow."
The two of them curled up together eating Pizza and drinking beer. Watching true crime documentaries.
Adam had no intentions of sleeping over that night but Shelby and him had both fallen asleep. When Adam opened his eyes it took him a second to remember where he was.
He then noticed he had a weight on his chest. He looked down to see Shelby was fast asleep on him. She looked so peaceful sleeping. Adam looked at his watch and realized he was going to be late if he didn't get moving .
He gently shook Shelby. "Hey Shelby. We fell asleep."
"What time is it?" Shelby still had her eyes closed.
"8:30."
"Fuck." Shelby reluctantly got off of Adam.
"I'm sorry." Adam sat up and started to put on his shoes.
"No it's fine. I have a shift today anyways."Shelby walked Adam to the door. "Thanks for last night."
"Anytime. I'll call you later." Shelby nodded. Adam then leaned in and kissed her. The kiss felt right but off at the same time.
Shelby had a smile on her face when their lips parted. Shelby then opened the door. Just as Adam was exiting her apartment, Jay and Lindsay were coming out of their apartment.
"Ruzek?" Jay and Erin were both just staring at him.
"Hey guys. How's it going?" Adam pulled Shelby's door closed.
"What are you doing at Shelby's?"
Erin was looking him up and down. "And are you wearing the same clothes from yesterday?"
"Uh." Adam started rubbing the back of his head trying to figure out something to say. "I came over to talk to Shelby last night about who the guy was. I must of fallen asleep."
"Uh huh." Jay and Erin didn't believe him.
"Well we need to get to work. So I'll see you two there." Adam quickly got on the elevator and headed down stairs.
"Voight is not going to like this."
"Nope not one bit." The couple got on the elevator and headed to work.
