AN: Hello again! I'm still very very rusty with my writing skills. But writing this story has been helping to see a lot of my writing flaws which has been great if a bit ego harming. Also! If you didn't see, I did a light re-edit of chapter one. So check that out if you feel so inclined. As well, feel free to leave reviews with your complaints or ideas for the story. I like hearing from y'all, even if it's to air out your complaints I still get to learn. Till next time, take care 3
Sans had teleported Flowey to Frisks' room with a warning to be quiet before arriving at the house. Returning to shortcut Frisk to the front door. Frisk swallowed thickly, far too drained to deal with what was waiting behind the door. Before Sans' knuckle had met the door it was flung open, and Frisk was scooped up into a tight hug.
"My child! Please, never scare me like that again."
Undyne's anger was only just held back by her relief, "What happened? Is some human giving you problems!?" She grabbed the nearest thing and smashed it in her fist. It was a coaster. Alphys frowned, "C-calm down. Frisk needs t-time to rest, accusations come later o-okay?"
Undyne blinked at her, "Oh, well, yeah, I guess you're right. Sorry twerp…"
Toriel gently cradled them in her arms, taking them away from Undyne and Alphys who were now tackling Sans with questions.
"We have made a small change of arrangements. And, I'm sorry if this may seem like I don't trust you my child but...I have asked Papyrus to sleep in your room with you until you are well again" her voice took on a worrisome and nervous tone. Frisk nodded into her fur, "thank you"
Toriel smiled, the edges of worry leaving her face. "I've also set up Alphys to watch over your health, and for Muffet to prepare and bring you some easy-to-eat meals over. She was also kind enough to only charge me half-price as a 'Frisk Discount'. She is a rather strange young lady" Frisk silently hoped the surface had supplied her with more ingredients than just spiders. They stopped short in the bathroom where Toriel fussed over cleaning their face. Asking Frisk to remove their sweater Frisk firmly refused. Toriel didn't force things and picked them up, carrying them back to their room. Toriel opened their door and closed it halfway behind her. Frisk noted that wherever Flowey was he was keeping his promise to keep out of sight well but, with a flourish of motherly muscle memory, they were tucked into bed no longer able to scan the room. Toriel pulled up a chair and took a seat, pulling a wrapped something from her robe pocket. Undoing the wrapping, she revealed a slice of pumpkin pie. "I would like for you to eat some, even if it's just a bite" Frisk stared at the proffered pie, leaning up a bit to take a small bite. It was delicious, of course, but Frisk was still not feeling much like eating.
"Well done my child, do you think you could manage another?" She asked softly. Frisk took another mouthful and chewed it carefully, swallowing with some effort. They were rewarded with a pat and kiss on the head, "Thank you. Please eat for Alphys and Papyrus as well. And don't fret, I shall be helping Papyrus with the dishes he brings you"
Frisk laughed softly, bringing a smile to Toriel's face. Her paw carefully fixed their hair, "You know...if ever there was something you'd like to tell me...you need only speak"
Frisk nodded silently. Toriel hid a pained look and nodded back, "I just wanted you to know. Well, goodnight dear, I love you and I shall see you first thing in the morning"
With a parting kiss on their forehead, she left, leaving the door barely open. Frisk sat up just a little, "...Asriel?".
A long pause wavered before a small and annoying voice came from under the bed, "What do you want?"
"Checking on you."
"...I'm fine, where's Chara?"
"Sleeping"
"...did Chara really have to take control and drag you down there to see me. Would you have really just left me down there to rot?"
"Never"
Flowey went quiet and stayed quiet. The sudden silence was ended quickly as Alphys entered, carrying a clipboard heavy with papers. She claimed the same chair as Toriel and settled in. "...F-frisk? Are you awake?"
Frisk nodded. "O-ok good. So...I've done some studying and compiled a c-care plan for you. T-t-to help you get better." She leafed through the intimidating stack of papers, "Ah! So, first off. I bought some h-human sleeping pills to help you rest." With a free paw she fished out a large bottle of gummies, "You take o-one a night and it will help you rest"
After being fed a gummy and listening to Alphys ramble over her medical notes, Frisk was asleep in no time. A paw gently patted their head before the lizard hopped off the chair, and left.
Frisk was in a massive void, darkness stretching in all directions. Underfoot was water, after the initial surprise Frisk learned that they wouldn't sink and trusted it to walk on. Exploring the space they soon arrived at Toriel's home in the ruins. As if it has been lifted from the Underground and placed here. Frisk opened the door, stepped in, quickly took in the scent, and realized what this was. The house reeked of blood, and only one person in the house could truly bleed.. In the kitchen was Frisks' body, sprawled out on the floor in a very undignified position.
Frisk remembered when the resets had first started to get to them. When Chara's influence to just kill them all was constant. And when they refused, ending it seemed like the best option. Frisk had yet to take a life and didn't know the procedure. They remembered just shoving the knife in, hitting nothing vital. They remembered the pain as they squirmed around on the floor and the slow march towards death. Never had they considered the scene that Toriel would come upon when she got home.
"I'm sorry Frisk"
Frisk turned to see the spectral form of Chara looking over the scene. A response didn't come. They nodded and turned away from the body, walking purposefully back to their room. Chara floated after them idly. Frisk opened the door expectantly, inside was a thin spread of dust across everything. The door was shut.
A deep breath
The next door
A new horror
Inside was Toriel in an uncomfortable position in the bed, unmoving. A thick stench of rot poured from the room like a thick wave. Frisk gagged and staggered back, stumbling into a figure that grabbed them. Chara panicked for a second before setting their face in a sharp expression, "Hey! Let Frisk go before a bash your...h-hey, I can't move…" Chara hung in the air helplessly. Frisk tried to tug away until a blade pressed in from their back, grinding against the ribs with a sick sound as it exited through their front. Frisks' scream morphed into a wet gurgle. Chara's face showed nothing but horror as they watched, their struggling useless.
"..hehhlp...ehlp...k-kar-a...hel….GHLK!"
The blade pulled out and re-entered, again and again, Frisks' feeble consciousness faltering until it slipped into the welcoming oblivion.
Frisk shot up in bed with a mangled scream. More screams came as phantom pains burned from non-existent injuries. Fingers felt over smooth skin. Any signs of being stabbed gone. Frisk flinched as something strange buzzed over the flesh from their hands. They gave off a red current. Like red electricity bouncing between their sweat-drenched fingers. They shook their hands in a panic, screaming again, the effect fading. Papyrus appeared suddenly, Frisks' heart could only take so much more as they screamed again before noticing Papyrus's blanket pallet on the floor.
"It's okay human! Tis' I, The Great Papyrus, here to calm you!" Frisk made grabby hands at the skeleton who swiftly picked them up and held them close. "There is no reason to worry. None but you and Undyne have ever bested me! You've nothing to fear while we all are here to protect you!" Frisk held onto his skateboard pajamas. With another jarring sound, the bedroom door was kicked open by an enraged Undyne, followed immediately by Toriel and a worried-looking Alphys.
"What's going on in here!?" Undyne looked around wildly secretly hoping to find something to pummel. Frisk traded hands from Papyrus to Toriel as soon as she reached for them. "My child, what has troubled you?" They let themselves be cradled against her chest, still overstimulated by the sudden events. "B-bad dream" Frisk managed, their mind finally settling down. Toriel hugged them close, "It's okay my child, it's over now"
Papyrus perked, "And you missed it too Queen Toriel! Frisk used their magic to ward off the foul dreams!"
Everyone blinked, Alphys spoke first, "T-their magic?"
Papyrus nodded in agreement, "Yes! It was quite impressive to see one so young using it so natively! But, you should expect no less when you are under the tutelage of I, The Great Papyrus!"
Toriel cradled Frisk close, "My child, is this true?" They looked over their hands, turning them back and forth, seeming unsure, whatever was there when they had awoken was gone. Frisk shrugged, then started to squirm, wanting free of the goat's grasp. Toriel carefully set them down and Frisk stretched sleepily, yawning softly and rubbing the sleep from their eyes with their large sweater sleeves. Alphys blushed, "... cute"
They looked back up to their new-found company, pointing at their open mouth. Toriel smiled softly, "Are you ready for some breakfast my child?" Frisk nodded. Toriel let the child take her paw as she walked with them to the kitchen, "Just a touch early, but I do not mind". Several pans were on the stove after a few moments, all cooking up various breakfast items. Sans appeared in the chair next to Frisk, kicking his slippered feet up on the table. "Feet off the table" Toriel said softly, not even looking away from her cooking. Sans complied, "so kiddo. hear ya had a bad dream. not because of some monsters under the bed or anything, right?"
Frisk shook their head, catching the skeletons drift. Sans took a moment to read their face, seeming satisfied after a moment and reclining back, "glad to hear. say tori. can you get me and my pal here get some cakes' our way?"
Toriel turned around with a playfully serious face, "You'll get your pancakes as soon as they're done and no sooner. You'll teach Frisk some bad manners'' Sans chuckled to himself, grinning languidly. Alphys popped up in the chair to Frisks' other side with an armful of equipment. She noticed the collective looks and blushed, "It's f-for monitoring y-you Frisk, vitals and s-such" Frisk gave her an encouraging smile, holding out their arm as Alphys got their blood pressure.
"H-heart rate is steady...b-blood pressure is good...O2 levels are all in t-the green. Other than the mild m-malnutriton and l-lack of sleep you're g-golden" Frisk smiled proudly. Undyne sat and rolled her eyes, "Don't be proud of not eating twerp, you need food. It's body FUEL!" She slammed the table excitedly with the last word.
While Toriel scolded Undyne Papyrus joined the group, "Human! I have made your bed whilst you were preparing for breakfast! And seeing you had no clean sheets I have furnished you with my BoneBoard sheets. I do hope they bring you the same rad dreams they bring to me!" Frisk grinned and ushered him closer, pulling his skull down to kiss his forehead. Papyrus blushed brilliantly, "Oh! Well! Human! I, The Great Papyrus, humbly accept your affections!"
"i dunno bro. that doesn't sound very humble to me"
"It's is very humble and you will hush about it!" The taller skeleton tool his seat at the table just as Toriel began sliding pancakes and bacon onto plates. Frisk frowned at the bacon and discreetly scooted it onto Sans' plate. Toriel sat down herself as soon as the plates had been filled. Frisk let their eyes wander the kitchen as they idly nibbled on their food.
The kitchen was large, and somewhat similar to the kitchen they had shared in the ruins, though now with a large island in the center set with flower arrangements and bowls of fruit. The walls of the kitchen were decorated with cozy paintings and different drawings Frisk had done and pictures of them with different monsters. The stove was just as clean as it ever was, the cabinets and surfaces as spotless as anywhere else Toriel found herself. Frisks' haze was broken as Alphys poked their arm with a claw. They jerked, looking over to them before smiling.
"Y-you really should eat F-frisk. Humans n-need lots of calories"
They nodded, tipping some more maple syrup onto their pancakes. Alphys watched until they saw Frisk stuff a mouthful of syrup drenched pancake into their mouth before grinning and returning to her own plate.
The monsters idly chatted between mouthfuls, some of the built up tension bleeding off as they enjoyed the meal. Once Frisk had finished they tipped up their orange juice and downed the rest, hopping up from their chair. "My child. Where are you in a hurry to?"
"...my room"
"Oh, well. Our guests will all be here for a little while longer should you wish to visit."
Frisk nodded with a smile, hurrying up to their room and closing the door. They gave a sigh of relief then peeked under the bed. Flowey was idly playing with a robot toy, making it plod around the floor. Frisk clear their throat and Flowey dropped it.
"T-there you are! You think you can leave me under here too?"
Frisk shook their head and pulled them out by the pot, gently petting their petals. Flowey recoiled, "Where's Chara?"
"...asleep"
"Why are they asleep?"
"...tired from control"
"...look at you, almost said a full sentence there"
Frisk frowned, "...be nice"
"No"
Frisk stood with a sigh and dug in their drawer for the plant food Asgore has given them for their window sill plants. Sitting down they used the spoon to get a large scoop and proffered it to Flowey. He blinked at it, "What is that?"
Frisk brought it closer, "...yummy" Flowey's eyes raised from the spoon to Frisk then back. He carefully opened his fanged mouth wide and let Frisk guide the spoon into his mouth. His face screwed up for a moment as the point left his mouth before it softened as he cheerily chewed. "This isn't gross" Frisk nodded and smiled, "...yummy".
"I heard you the first time idiot, now gimme more"
Frisk got them another spoonful and fed it to them, letting the process repeat until Flowey shook his head, "I'm full, no more" The food was put back away and Frisk returned with a smile, petting Flowey again. Too tired to do much about it this time he resigned to his fate.
"So...Frisk. How long has Chara been attached to you?"
Their face fell at the question, discomfort obvious. Flowey almost took back the question before settling into their choice. Frisk answered after a moment of thought, "...since...hurt mom"
Flowey chucked, "You mean killed her don't you?"
Frisk flinched, tears starting to flow as they nodded. The fight Flowey had seemed to drain, "...Anyways…they've been with you since then?"
They nodded in response, gently cleaning some of the plant food from Flowey's mouth. He grumbled in annoyance, "I'm guessing their little possession stun wears them out. Is that why the sleep" Frisk nodded again, neatening up Flowey's pot and smoothing out their petals. Flowey's eyes drooped sleepily, half yawning, "I'm done talking. I couldn't get any rest with you carrying on all night…" he fussily used his vines to push away Frisks' hands and scoot himself back under the bed. Before he managed to slide completely under, Frisk leaned in and kissed his forehead. He vanished under the bed with angry grumbling.
Frisk sighed and stood up. Heading to the closet they stripped down and looked through their clothes, picking out a large shirt with a picture of Asgore, Toriel, and themself at the aquarium. Then a pair of comfy grey slacks. Pulling on their clothes they headed back downstairs where the majority of their company was piled in the living room. Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys were all sitting on the couch watching a show Frisk didn't recognize while Sans slept at the foot of the couch. Undyne brightened after seeing them hop down off the last step, "There ya are twerp, I knew you wouldn't stay closed up in your room!"
"N-no one said they would!" Alphys fussed.
Papyrus perked up, "Come human! Join us! We are watching a classic human film on the art of combat via flaming swords!"
Frisk smiled and held up a finger, signalling they'd be back soon before padding off to the kitchen as Toriel was busy cleaning the dishes. Pushing up a stool Frisk clambered up and joined her.
"Oh-ho! Come to lend a paw have you" she smiled warmly, nudging Frisk. They shook their head, wiggling their fingers, "...no paws"
Toriel chuckled, "I suppose you're right. Here, I shall wash while your dry"
Taking plates as they came, drying and stacking them, Frisk expertly handled their duty. A strange pang as a drowsy presence stirred in their head.
"hrmm? mmh, mornin' Frisky~" Chara purred.
Frisk ignored the voice, diligently drying their share. "Don't ignore me! I'm in a good mood, indulge why don't you?" Chara's voice was soft and playful, missing the usual cold edge of severity. Toriel took away their chance to reply as she seemed to chew on her words for a moment, "My child. I didn't mean to further confuse you this morning. But you must know that I am very curious about Papyrus seeing you use magic"
Frisk gave a shrug, unsure themselves. Toriel smiled softly back, "Well, I was thinking, since you are old enough now. Perhaps we could start with your magic lessons." Frisk nearly dropped their dish, scrambling a bit to actually catch it. Toriel laughed, placing her paw on Frisks back to keep them from falling.
"Hey! You never told me your magic kicked in! What can ya do! What can ya do!"
The paw on their back traveled up to pat their head, "You must forgive my curiosity. But perhaps we could go, now that we've finished washing up" Frisk nods quickly, drying their last cup before hopping off the stool and excitedly following her outsider. The others, including Papyrus carrying a sleeping Sans, follow soon after as Toriel rolls up her sleeves.
"Now, lesson one. Magic flow and utilization"
With a snap of her digits her paws catch fire, burning harmlessly. "Now, my magic is not fire magic per se, but simply the form I am best at manifesting. Magic is a base ingredient and can be used for many recipes, but like any recipe, you'll forget some parts unless you know it by heart"
With another snap a small orange bone appeared, though, it seemed small and fragile. Papyrus cheered uproariously. "This is someone else's recipe. One I have not mastered. Though since it's all from the same ingredients, I can make it. Just not as well as it's inventor of course."
Frisks' eyes widened to the size of dinner plates almost sparkling. Toriel smiled proudly, "There are many more elements involved, all culminating in the production of your magical ability. Now, Frisk, I would like you to try and create something, anything at all...that's safe, no fire"
They rolled their eyes, breathing out slow and focusing.
"Mmh, whatever could your ability be. Maybe you'll be able to put people to sleep. Or give them a smile so charming you disarm them in an instant!"
I'm trying to focus, shush.
The energetic feeling from the morning returned, an electric sensation filling their body. They kept their eyes closed even as Papyrus gasped in awe. The feeling swelled as they felt a faint heat around them and heard the faint crackle of electricity. Soon the power was focused in their hands as Frisk thought as hard as they could about a bone, trying to copy Toriel as best they could.
Cracking open an eye they saw an electric red bone floating between their palms. Small licks of electricity jumping from their fingertips to touch it. "Hey! That's mine! That's my thing!"
Frisk flinched at the yelling, the magic faltering and fading in a sizzle of electricity. The beginning burn of embarrassment flared as the small crowd clapped and gave cheers of praise. When Frisk peeked out from behind their sweater sleeves they saw Toriel beaming, "Very well done my child. It's amazing to see a child even tap into their magic on their first try, let alone to perfectly summon something on their first try!"
Frisk kicked the grass bashfully. Sans had woken up at some point and was giving a wide smile, eyes half-lidded. Toriel clasped her paws together, "I know it can be tiring to use your magic, so we'll only do one last thing. Now, I'm not sure what all the kids are calling it these days but when I was younger we called it a Limit Bond. You simply max out your magical output for one quick moment to get a feel for how much you can produce." She gestured to the training dummy setting in the middle of the backyard, "Give it your all!"
Frisk nodded seriously, turning to face it.
"Must be cause' we're sharing this soul. You can use my magic."
' Then why doesn't mom recognize it? '
"Pff, cause I never let her see. Me and Azzy would practice in secret... preparations and what not"
Frisk let the magic flow once again.
' Let's see what you could do then! '
They could feel Charas smile as the current returned to their fingers with the same chilling crackling sound. A radiating heat began to spread from them as the current audibly hummed through their veins, stray bolts striking at the ground. Further. They pressed towards the border of their limits but found no resistance as their body grew light and buzzed with a staggering power. They raised a hand towards the dummy and with a thought, discharged the energy.
It happened too fast to fully process. A streak of red and the deafening crash of thunder all at once. Frisk staggered and stumbled backwards, falling on their back, a smoldering hole left where the dummy once stood. Before they had begun to even stand, Papyrus had hoisted them up into the air, "WELL DONE! Simply amazing! I always knew my training could unlock latent skills but this!? Fantastically done human!"
Frisk beamed proudly until they looked over to their arm. The sweater had been blasted to shreds by the force, leaving their fresh injury exposed. Their smile faltered and vanished when they saw the looks across the monsters faces as Papyrus excitedly praised their feat.
"Whoops"
