At last, both parties reached the Institute of War. Signs had been placed everywhere, directing summoners and champions alike to their respective positions in the Grand Hall. Unfortunately for Han and Yeri, their seats were quite a bit apart from each other, her last name being Kim, his being Yang. They bid each other farewell before heading to their seats. On the outside, Han looked as calm and composed as ever. Internally though, he was practically screaming with excitement.
'I can finally participate in the League!' He thought. 'Kai is so good at battling other summoners and their champions! I want to do the same!' Kai was one of the few friends Han had. They had met at the summoner academy when Han had just entered, and Kai was in his last year. At first, Kai thought nothing of Han, passing him off as the standard summoner wannabe. As the year went on, however, he noticed that Han had a different air to him than the other summoners. Compared to most of the other summoners, Han was quite reserved and quiet. Han didn't talk because he disliked people, rather he was focusing on watching matches between high tier summoners or theorycrafting builds and combinations in his mind. Kai experienced it firsthand when watching a practice duel between Han and Yeri. Yeri had thrown a ignite-enhanced punch at Han, who met it with his own fist, using barrier on his fist to block it while not halting his other hand's smite bolt. Most people would've tried to dodge it or stand there and take it while using barrier, leaving themselves open to other attacks or allowing their opponent to reset. Han didn't give Yeri a moment to react before the bolt hit her, knocking her out and losing her the match. Despite Kai graduating that year and becoming a summoner competing in the League, the two had become an unlikely pair of mentor and mentee, Kai teaching Han advanced topics and details about summoning champions that weren't taught in class.
As the rest of the students and unbound champions filed into the Grand Hall, champions facing the summoners, Han's eyes began surveying the seated champions, trying to identify them based on what Kai had taught him. As his eyes passed over the champions from the Labrys Academy, one in particular caught his eye. She was decently tall, blonde with a horn looking crown hairband, light skin, and wearing a white battle outfit with gold accent marks and a purple and black chestpiece. If his memory served right, this was Leona, one of the best fighters in all of Runeterra.
'She looks relaxed, but also looks like she could knock me out before I could react.' He mused. 'She's very pretty as well. She's got well defined curves-'
He felt his cheeks grow warm as he realized what he was thinking about. He took a quick last glance to see if she had noticed, and met her eyes as she stared back at him.
'Shit, she saw me staring at her!'
Unbeknownst to him, she had done the same. He caught her eyes as she scanned the assembled mass of summoners. 'He looks quite composed. All the other summoners seem quite agitated or nervous, yet he's just sitting here. I wonder what's going through his mind.' She then realized she was staring. Worse, it seemed that he had noticed, and was staring back at her. She felt her cheeks burn bright red as she tried to compose herself. It certainly didn't help that she thought he was kind of attractive, with the outline of his muscles and frame being barely visible through the robes he wore. Something about his eyes enchanted her.
As if waking from a stupor, both shook their heads, trying to get the other off of their minds. Both understood how unrealistic a relationship would be, with it not only being forbidden but also the chances of them being able to even meet on a regular basis, yet neither could deny the irresistible pull they felt towards the other.
As the last champions and summoners took their seats, the head of the Elder Council stepped out to conduct the ceremony. The Elder droned on and on about how important it was that they were now summoners, and the many responsibilities and duties of being a summoner. None of this was new news to any of the assembled summoners, having had this drilled into their heads at their respective academies since day one. The graduation ceremony concluded without any problems, but there was a noticeable change in the air. As they moved onto the Binding Ceremony the tension and energy in the room rose exponentially.
This was the part everyone had been waiting for. One by one, each graduating summoner was called up to stand in front of the Elder Council. They would cast a spell that showed if that particular summoner was to be Truly Bound to a champion. If the summoner had one, an icon of the champion would form above their heads. As summoner after summoner went without being bound, Han was getting nervous. At this point they had finished calling up all the students from every other academy than his. So far, only 4 summoners out of the few thousand assembled summoners had had True Bonds with a champion. Three of them had one champion, and one had two. As they began calling the names of the summoners from his academy, he was shocked when it was revealed that Joseph had three Truly Bound champions: Draven, Shaco, and Garen. Han had to chuckle at that. All three fit Joseph's personality quite well. Egotistic, creepy, and simple-minded.
Like he predicted, it was revealed that Yeri also had bound champions, although having three as well was quite the surprise. Her Truly Bound champions were Kayn, Kai'sa, and Jayce. 'Not a bad trio,' Han noted.
Finally, it was his turn. Han walked up to the Elders and waited for the spell to finish. While waiting he and Leona's eyes met again. Both felt a spark pass through them, but before either could ponder on it, the spell completed. Han held his breath, waiting to see if he would have any True Bonds with any champions. Something shimmered above his head, before revealing the first champion he would be Truly Bound to.
The head elder spoke up. "It would appear that you have a True Bond with Wukong."
Han cheered internally. He was right. He got a Truly Bound champion.
He stood there, waiting to see if there would be any others. Nothing happened for a minute, and Han began to lose hope. As he was about to turn, another thread shimmered into existence above him. Shen was his next bound champion. Han watched as two more appeared in quick succession. Caitlyn. Akali.
At this point the Grand Hall was completely silent. No one even dared to breathe for fear of being heard. This was the first time in decades that so many summoners in one graduating class had even one True Bond with a champion, not to mention three having three or more.
Han could barely contain his excitement. Sure, he thought he would get one champion, but definitely not four. Han turned to return to his seat, but stopped when he heard whispers rise up from the crowd. The elder spoke again.
"It seems that we are witnessing history in the making," declared the elder.
Han whirled around to see another thread just shimmer into existence, before solidifying into the icon of his final Truly Bound champion.
The thread took its time in forming the image. The entire hall waited with baited breath to see who this final champion would be.
As the image became clearer and clearer, Han's jaw dropped lower and lower.
His final Truly Bound champion?
Leona.
