Chapter 3
Ramona, Jackson, and Max waited in the waiting room at the hospital.
"She's been in there a long time," Jackson said. "Why won't they tell us anything?"
"I don't know," Ramona replied.
"I'm scared," Max said. "I don't want anything to happen to her."
Jackson hugged his brother tightly.
"It's going to be okay," Jackson assured his brother.
"But what if it's not?" Max asked.
"We have to stay positive," Jackson said.
A female doctor came over to them.
"How is she?" Ramona asked.
"She's just fine," the doctor replied. "She just needs to take it easy and not do any strenuous activity for the next few days."
"Why did she pass out?" Jackson asked.
"That's common with some mothers in the first few months of pregnancy," the doctor replied.
Jackson, Max, and Ramona looked at each other in confusion.
"I'm sorry," Ramona said. "What?"
"Did she not tell you?" the doctor asked. "She's about 8 weeks along."
"She's pregnant?" Jackson asked.
"Yes," the doctor replied. "You really didn't know?"
"No," Jackson replied.
"Okay," the doctor said.
"Has she heard the results yet?" Ramona asked.
"No," the doctor replied. "I thought I'd tell you first."
"Let us tell her," Jackson said. "She should hear it from us."
"Okay," the doctor said.
Jackson, Max, and Ramona went into D.J.'s hospital room to see D.J. laying on her bed.
"Hey, Mom," Max said.
"Hey," D.J. said. "I'm so sorry I scared you."
"It's okay, Mom," Jackson said.
"I haven't received my results yet," D.J. said. "I wonder what's taking them so long."
"The doctor already told us the results," Ramona said.
"He did?" D.J. asked nervously.
Jackson walked over to D.J. and held her hand.
"Mom," Jackson said in a serious tone. "We have some news for you."
"Am I sick?" D.J. asked nervously. "Just tell me."
"Mom," Jackson said. "You're pregnant."
D.J. broke down crying.
"How long do I have?" D.J. cried.
D.J. stopped crying and looked at everyone.
"Did you say pregnant?" D.J. asked.
"Yes," Max said. "The doctor told us you're pregnant."
"How could this happen?" D.J. asked.
"Well," Ramona said. "When a man and woman love each other very much…"
"Stop it," D.J. said. "I mean, when I tried to be a surrogate for Stephanie and Jimmy, I was told I couldn't have anymore children."
"Looks like they were wrong," Max said.
"Wow," D.J. said. "We're not going to have any food left in the house."
"Don't worry, Mom," Jackson said. "I'll get a job and start helping out with the groceries."
"It's not that," D.J. said. "This is Steve's baby. Steve eats a lot! Between the two of them, we're not going to have any food left!"
