A/N: Happy mother's day to all my fellow Canadians, Americans, and everyone who celebrated today! I hope everyone had a great day:)
Gonna be honest, I had a completely different chapter planned out for today but then a user on AO3 a few days ago suggested I do something with Wanda and Thor, maybe with Mjolnir and I LOVED that idea. I added it to the bottom of my list to get to later but I just couldn't forget about it, even for a little while, so here it is! I hope you like it!
"Ugh! I can't do it. This is way too hard!" Wanda sighed, pushing the worksheet away from her and slamming her head into her hands.
Nat pushed the worksheet back. Homeschooling Wanda was harder than she thought it was going to be. Harder than it was last summer, that was for sure.
After the incident back in January, they had decided collectively that it would just be better to keep Wanda away from school for the rest of the year. She could start fourth grade in September again after her confidence fully came back, but for now, it would just be easier and safer to keep her in their sight as much as possible.
But it was hard to keep Wanda focused, especially now that she was more comfortable with her surroundings.
"Try again, milaya. Remember the steps. Bring the two down and subtract." Nat said, reaching over to point at the question.
"Which two? There are three twos. Ugh! Three twos? That doesn't even make sense." She pouted. "I hate math. Can I just read instead?"
Nat laughed.
"Sorry, malyshka. You have to finish this. Peter will be here in a few minutes, maybe he can help you better than I can." She looked at the paper in confusion. "Anything after basic multiplication completely slips my mind." She mumbled.
Nat pulled open her own computer, working on case files. For the past few months, she and Steve were lucky to be laying low, thanks to Fury. He knew what the family had gone through, so despite training just in case they were ever needed, they had both been ordered to debrief case files. It was boring for the both of them, Nat had to admit, but it was better than leaving Wanda.
Wanda sighed, eyeing a pen, and lifting it with her mind. She closed her eyes, writing a smiley face in the corner of the page.
She giggled, proud of her accomplishment.
"Look, mama. I did that with my powers." She smiled, pointing to the drawing.
Nat's eyes widened, impressed.
"Wow, that's actually pretty amazing."
Wanda nodded, and Nat leaned over to kiss her hair.
"I'm proud of you, do you know that? You're starting to come to terms with your gift, it's amazing."
"Thanks. Proud enough I can do something else other than long division?" Wanda asked, a cheeky smile plastered to her face.
Nat scoffed.
"I think you've been spending too much time with Yelena, you little troublemaker. Sorry, you have to do the math if you want to pass grade three."
Wanda sighed, picking up the pen with her hand this time.
The door opened, snapping her out of her thoughts. Peter entered through the door backwards, clearly talking to someone.
"Wanda will probably be inside, and she's scared of new people so maybe just like-
"HELLO, MY MIDGARDIAN FRIENDS!"
Thor stepped in, his voice booming.
Wanda hopped out of her chair, scampering immediately over to Nat.
"See," Peter said, sighing. "I told you."
"Thor! What are you doing here?" Nat was very surprised to see him, standing in their kitchen.
"Well, things were pretty slow on Asgard, so I thought I'd stop by to visit. You have a child."
He said, gesturing to Wanda. Wanda lifted her head to look at him at the mention of her name.
"Oh, I remember you and your brother, right? You helped us. I wanted to thank you, but duty called back in Asgard."
"What's that?" Wanda asked. She had never heard of a place called Asgard before.
"Thor's father is the King of Asgard."
"Like a country?" Wanda asked.
"No, my child. Like a world." He gave her a friendly smile.
Wanda just nodded, utterly confused.
"Pointbreak! When did you get here?" Tony jogged into the kitchen, followed by Clint, Steve, Sam, and Rhodey. They had all heard his commotion.
"He just teleported outside!" Peter said, "It like, scared the crap out of me, but it was so amazing!"
"Well, you should stay for a few days, catch up. Things have been pretty slow for us. And different, too. We have a lot to fill you in on."
Thor once again gestured to Wanda, who was now sitting face forward on Nat's lap.
"I can see that. What's your name, Child?"
"Wanda." She said. It was quiet and shy, but they were proud of her for actually saying something.
He noticed the ring on Nat's finger, too.
"And you're getting married, too? To Steve, I'm assuming?"
Nat's eyes widened, nodding. She could hear Clint and Tony chuckle in the background
"It's a little unnerving that that was your first guess, but you're not wrong. How did you know?"
"Dear Gods above, we all knew. So obvious. Hope I'm invited to the wedding." He leaned over, grabbing a random mug of coffee off the table.
"Hey, big guy. That's mine!" Clint protested, reaching for his cup.
"Not anymore." He took a sip.
Steve rolled his eyes, sitting down. "Of course, you're invited. Are you planning on staying for dinner? Nat's turn to cook. AKA, we're probably ordering pizza or something."
Thor pulled out a chair too, taking a seat.
"Yeah, I'll stay awhile. I'm not needed on Asgard right now and I missed my Midgardian friends."
"Great! Nat said, standing up. Wanda followed her to the kitchen. "I'll order an extra pizza then."
…
A half an hour later, they all sat around the dinner table, sharing stories about what they have missed in the past eight months. Wanda listened intently, especially when Thor described Asgard.
She was in awe. He told her about the golden cities, the magic bridge called Bifrost which lets you travel between realms, and most importantly to her, flying horses.
"Flying horses? She asked, her mouth open. "Like horses with wings?"
Thor nodded, sipping his drink.
"Exactly. They're glossy white, and they have wings made of feathers, like a bird."
"Woah, that's so cool! I want to go there!" Wanda exclaimed, astonished.
Thor nodded.
"You can. You can even rule Asgard, if you can lift Mjolnir, of course." It was a joke, merely used to just play along with the young girls' awe, but Thor couldn't help it.
"Mew mew? What's that?"
"Mjolnir," He corrected. "My hammer. Only the worthy can lift it."
Wanda eyed the hammer. It was on the ground, and looked pretty heavy, but only because it was made of metal. She could lift it; it couldn't be that hard.
"Can I try?"
He gestured to the object.
"Go ahead."
So, she tried, and failed. Thor just chuckled.
"So far, very few people can lift Mjolnir. Don't take it personally, child."
She huffed, trying again with the same result.
Nat chuckled.
"Okay, malyshka. Finish your dinner."
She nodded, hopping back into her seat.
"Do you..." She squeaked, just loud enough for Thor to hear her. "Do you think I could try again tomorrow, in the training room so there's more space?"
"I don't see why not, child. Try as long as you would like."
She smiled.
"Thanks!"
Wanda decided she wasn't going to give up until she could see flying horses for real.
…
So, the next day, as Thor promised, he set Mjolnir down in the middle of the training room. Yelena and Peter had come along with her, mainly because Nat and Steve were in a debriefing meeting with S.H.I.E.L.D, and Peter wanted to try to lift the hammer, too.
He tried first, and although he didn't have the regular Spider-suit he used to patrol Queens, he did have his web slingers.
"Tony put extra-strength webs in this, so I'm gonna try. Maybe his invention can lift it."
"Wait, doesn't it only count if you lift it with your hand?" Yelena asked, taking a seat on the bench. She wasn't really planning on trying like Wanda. She had tried once yesterday for fun, just like everybody else.
"No!" Peter protested. "I mean, I don't think so. I think if your hand can't lift it, nothing else can."
He shot a sticky mass of extra strength webs at the hammer and pulled with all his might.
Nothing.
He sighed in defeat.
"It doesn't even look that heavy, but it won't even budge!"
Wanda stood up from her place beside Yelena.
"Let me try."
She pulled the handle, then the leather strap. Still nothing.
But she still decided nothing was going to stop her from seeing those magical horses.
They worked away, trying different techniques and strategies to try and move Mjolnir, but nothing seemed to work.
Eventually, Peter gave up, joining Yelena on the bench.
Wanda had even broken out her powers. They have been training every day to gain her confidence back up, and what better way to practice than to try lifting Mjolnir?
Peter and Yelena watched from the bench, silently in awe at the young girl's determination.
Eventually, at around noon, the rest of the team had ended their meeting and came to retrieve the three of them to eat.
"Hey guys, it's time for lunch. Then Thor has to leave." Nat said.
"What?!" Wanda asked in horror. "I haven't moved the hammer yet, though!"
Nat bit her lip to keep her from bursting out in laughter. The mix of horror and determination on her face reminded her so much of herself.
"Sorry baby witch," Tony added. "Thor has to leave pretty soon. When you're royalty, you have your obligations, right, pointbreak?"
Thor nodded.
Wanda turned to her mother.
"Just five more minutes, mama! I know I can do it!"
Nat raised her arms in defence.
"Fine, fine. Knock yourself out, malyshka."
Wanda nodded, turning her attention back on the hammer.
Her hands were glowing red, face strained in determination.
They couldn't help but laugh.
"Look at how determined she is." Steve said, watching the young girl, "She definitely has picked up on your traits, Nat."
Nat laughed.
"What can I say, I'm such a good-
"AH!"
They all turned their head simultaneously.
"I did it! I moved mew mew!"
Thor facepalmed.
"For the millionth time, child. It's Mjolnir. Mjol-nir. It's not that hard."
"Whatever. I moved it, see?"
She outstretched her hands again, and the hammer glowed dark red. It shook for a moment. Then moved an inch. Then two, then three, until it shot against the wall with so much force it just continued going.
Thor's eyes widened, and his hand flew out. The hammer shot straight past him, right into Wanda's hand.
The force knocked her straight onto her backside.
There was complete utter silence as they all just processed what had happened. Thor genuinely looked like he was going to fall unconscious.
Yelena and Peter stood off to the side, their mouths forming a perfect 'o.'
"What the fuck." Tony whispered. Pepper slapped him.
Wanda just smiled excitedly, jumping up and down on the spot.
"It just needed a warmup first," Wanda said. No one answered her, they all stared, blinking.
"Okay, Thor! Take me to Asgard to see the flying horses! I'm now princess Wanda Maximoff Romanoff Rogers. Oh, of Asgard." She added.
There was still complete silence, mouths agape. The only sound was Tony's laughing at the young girl's clear confidence and satisfaction.
Nat cleared her throat.
"Okay, well... time for lunch. Why don't you give Mjolnir back to Thor, okay?" She squeaked, still in utter shock.
Tony couldn't stop laughing. Pepper slapped his shoulder again.
"Be quiet Tony, this is not a laughing matter."
"It is so, Pep! A child is worthy of lifting Mjolnir. A child! Nat and Steve's child, to be exact!" He choked out between laughs.
Pepper just rolled her eyes, pulling him along by the arm.
…
She chattered away happily while she ate. Thor had to sit down to process what had just happened.
First of all, he lied. He said whoever lifted the hammer could rule Asgard, but it was just a joke. He didn't actually think she could lift it, let alone wield it.
Second of all, now he was going to have to come up with a plan to break the news with the girl that he could not, in fact, bring her to Asgard to see the flying horses. He didn't even know if regular mortals could even get to Asgard. It was the realm of Gods, after all.
Sam entered the kitchen, sipping from a water bottle. He was the only one not present in the training room when she had lifted the hammer and was completely oblivious to what had gone on.
"Oh," He said, noticing the girl at the kitchen table. She was eating a peanut butter and jam sandwich, courtesy of Nat. "What you up to, Wanda?"
Wanda took a bite of the sandwich.
"That's princess Wanda, to you, Sam."
He rolled his eyes, grabbing an apple from the communal fruit bowl.
"Okay, Princess Wanda. What are you up to?"
"I'm not kidding, Sam! I'm an actual Princess now. I lifted mew mew."
"What the hell is a mew mew?"
"Thor's hammer." Nat interrupted, placing a glass of water in front of Wanda.
"Oh, Mjolnir." He laughed. "Yeah, funny joke."
Thor sighed, looking distraught.
"Except for the fact, Sam, that it's unfortunately not a joke."
He blinked for a moment, then snorted, spitting chunks of apple everywhere.
"You mean to tell me an eight-year-old kid now rules Asgard?"
"I'm almost nine though, remember?"
"Right, sorry. Almost nine." He said sarcastically, like it made a difference.
Thor sighed.
"Although that's not actually how it works, I cannot deny that Wanda is now worthy of lifting Mjolnir."
Wanda grinned.
"That sounds so much cooler than Princess, anyway. Worthy."
Once again, he looked like he was about to faint.
Wanda was unphased, continuing to eat her lunch.
"Thor, I hate to kick you out pointbreak, but like, you've already caused enough issues, so…" Tony leaned over, whispering to him.
Thor nodded vigorously.
"Nope, I was already leaving. This was enough chaos for one twenty-four-hour period."
Wanda caught onto the exchange.
"Hey, you said if I lifted mew mew I could see the flying horses!" She looked genuinely disappointed. "And rule Asgard!" She added, like it was a bonus.
"I was just jesting with you, child! I didn't think you could actually lift it." He mumbled the last part to himself.
"Wait, so flying horses don't exist there?"
"No, they do. I was kidding about the ruling Asgard part."
Her eyes widened again.
"So can I see them since I'm 'worthy?'"
"Uh..." He stuttered, unsure of what to say.
Tony winked at Thor, and at the rest of the group. He had a plan he could start, but he'd need their help, too.
"Okay, kid. Well, Thor was just leaving. It really is a pity. Better say goodbye."
"What do you mean?"
"Asgard is only for the worthy. Meaning your mother and father can't come." Thor added, catching on.
"What! They are so worthy!" She said, narrowing her eyes at him.
"And you know, being the ruler of Asgard isn't very fun. Ruling all nine realms is hard work, there is no time for play." Thor added.
Steve nodded, playing along.
"Yeah, sorry Wanda. Tire swings, Lego, video games. None of that stuff exists in Asgard."
She looked confused.
"Why not?"
"It just doesn't," Clint added.
"I can confirm." Thor nodded, raising his hand. He really had very little knowledge on what any of those things were, but they were playing along, which was all that mattered.
"Oh." Her head lowered a bit. The plan was working.
They all gave Peter a look, indicating for him to say something. If anyone could have an impact on Wanda, it was him.
"Yeah, and I once did a geography project on the wildlife in Asgard," Peter added. "The flying horses, called Pegasuses, have sharp teeth and are very aggressive in nature, so you wouldn't even be able to get close to them, anyway." It was an obvious lie, and he almost laughed. Everyone seemed to notice except Wanda herself.
Tony gave him a playful slap on the shoulder.
"Good one." He whispered sarcastically.
"That's not very fun. Why did you say it was so beautiful, then?" Wanda asked.
Thor leaned against the table.
"I'm not saying it's not beautiful, it is. But so is Midgard. Or Earth. Earth is very beautiful, too."
"Earth doesn't have flying horses."
"True, but like young Peter said. Pegasuses are…mean. Nasty creatures," He nodded. "Not truly worth seeing, anyway."
"…okay."
There was a moment where no one said anything. Complete silence.
"So. Do you still want to go?" He asked, smiling.
She shook her head.
"No. Asgard sounds scary now, no offence."
Thor nodded.
"It can be, especially with my brother around."
"You have a brother?"
"Aye. Loki. Master of shapeshifting. He attacked Earth a few years ago."
"What?!" She asked in complete horror.
"Yes, he-
"Okay, that's enough. You're going to scare the poor child!" Steve said, squeezing Wanda's shoulder. In return, she backed up straight into him.
"Okay, well. Thanks for having me and I'll come to visit again soon."
They all nodded.
Tony gave him a slap to the shoulder.
"Don't get eaten by a rabid Pegasus."
"I won't, dear friend," he gave one last wave to Wanda. "I'm sorry Asgard wasn't up to your expectations, child."
"That's okay. I like Earth better."
He nodded, widening his eyes.
"Wise decision."
And with that, he left, and they could see an imprint of a Norse symbol on the grass outside from where he left for Asgard.
Tony facepalmed.
"Once again, no regard for lawn maintenance."
Wanda giggled.
"I can't believe we just let Thor straight-up lie to our kid," Nat whispered to Steve. Wanda was still over by the window, head pressed against the glass to marvel at the imprint in the grass below.
"That's what you're worried about? Wanda is worthy of the most powerful mythological weapon in the world!"
"I mean," Tony interrupted, walking over, "When you've seen what Wanda can do with her own powers, I don't know why we're so surprised. That kid is more powerful than all of us combined."
He wasn't wrong. Wanda was definitely the most powerful out of all of them at the compound, and she was only a kid.
"Yeah, well, she would've gotten bored of Asgard pretty fast."
"Not bored, homesick." Steve corrected.
Nat sighed, slumping down in a dining room chair.
"That was, hands down, the most bizarre thing I've ever, and probably will ever, experience."
"I can second that." Tony followed
"And I can confidently third that." Steve agreed.
A/N: Thanks for reading! And as always, if you have any suggestions, let me know! I always appreciate a review :)
