Chapter Three

Maura has been silently observing the way Jane interacted with the patrons at the bar for a little over an hour now. Taking the last sip of her wine, she placed the glass back on the bar and waited for Jane to look in her direction again.

The pair had been making eye contact quite a bit during the last hour as Jane watched more than one good looking man try to join Maura. But Maura declined their company.

When Jane looked over at the honey blonde, for what felt like the 100th time that evening, she found Maura's gaze already directed at her. Looking down, Jane noticed that Maura had finished her wine and made her way over to the blonde.

"Another one?" she asked in a soft tone.

"I only came for one glass, but I could go for another," Maura whispered back. Why was she whispering?

Jane retrieved the bottle that she had placed under the bar, to keep it at room temperature, and poured another glass and slid it over to Maura.

"Thank you. You didn't have to give me a clean glass, you know?" Maura said politely with the shy smile.

"My boss would kill me if I didn't," Jane said the first thing that popped into her head.

"Well, I wouldn't have told anyone," came Maura's reply.

Is she flirting with me? Thought Jane while giving Maura a shy smile.

"Good to know," came Jane's reply. Maura was a little disappointed when Jane walked away again but that soon disappeared when the brunette made her way around the bar and slid into the seat right next to Maura.

"Is it okay if I join you for a bit? I have a couple of free minutes," Jane asked shyly.

"I'd love the company," Maura mouth worked faster than her brain could catch up.

"I had to ask since you've sent away a few sad looking guys in the last hour," Jane commented.

"I didn't come here looking for more than a glass of wine, but I didn't know I'd run into you again," Maura said seriously, hoping that Jane would realise that she was making an exception.

"But you're glad you're did? I could leave you alone, if you like?" Jane went to stand up again when she felt Maura's delicate hand on her arm.

"No. Please, stay."

Jane glanced around the bar before slipping back into her seat again and turning her body so that it was closer to Maura.

"I really am sorry about earlier. I was late for work and I obviously didn't look where I was going," Jane explained again.

"Jane, I told you it was okay. No harm done," Maura's smile seemed sincere, so Jane decided to move on.

"So, French wine?" she decided to with.

"My favourite," Maura gave a small smile. "I spent quite a bit in France during my early 20s, so I developed a taste for it."

Happy to be able to learn more about the honey blonde goddess, Jane decided she wanted more.

"So, you're not originally from there then?" Jane probed.

"No. I actually grew up in Boston, but my family moved when I was rather young. I've spent time on almost every continent," Maura said before taking a sip of her wine again.

"Would you look at that, I also grew up in Boston. Looks like we have that in common," Jane smiled softly. "How long have you been in New York?" she asked.

"I've been here for about a year. How about you?" Maura decided to shift the conversation toward Jane's life.

"I moved here when I was about 12 or so," Jane said vaguely before shifting the topic straight back to Maura. "You know what I do, what do you do?"

Sensing that Jane didn't like talking about herself, Maura let it go for now.

"I'm a writer. Mostly articles here and there. I actually just completed a piece about the history of modern-day fashion," she answered proudly.

"I can see why it would be fashion," Jane replied with a smirk as she let her eyes roam over Maura's body quickly.

"That's not my only interests," Maura defended quickly, having noticed how Jane looked her outfit.

"No, no. Of course not," Jane held up her hand. "That was a bad joke. I love the way you dress. What else do you like to write about?"

"I'm dressed very casually right now. You'll usually find me in a dress," Maura added, taking another sip of her wine.

"Then I'll need to see that too," Jane added with a wink.

Maura starred at her for a moment, trying to figure out how to proceed. Jane is a beautiful, seemingly complex woman and she would love nothing more than to get to know her, but Maura hasn't had a relationship in a while. Her encounters with partners have almost always been physical and she preferred it that way, but Jane made her think twice. Plus, she wasn't completely sure that Jane would even be interested.

"Human interest stories," Maura settled on answering Jane's previous question.

Jane seemed to study the woman in front of her and suddenly wished that she wasn't supposed to be working right now. She wanted to know more about her, but she also had to get back to work.

As if he read her mind, she heard Frost call for her.

"Jay! Stop flirting with the customers and get back here," she noted the smirk on his face but an unreadable expression on Maura's.

"Be right there!" she shouted back before returning her attention to Maura, who seemed to have slipped into herself.

"Hey," Jane whispered softly to Maura who has yet to lift her gaze back up from her glass. "I should get back, but it was really nice to talk to you."

"I… yes, you too," Maura almost stuttered.

Jane looked at her for a moment before hastily making her way back around the bar toward Frost.

"You're an ass, you know that?" she said as soon as he was within earshot.

"What? You said to tell you when Korsak got back," he put his hands up in defense.

"Yeah, I know but that's the woman I was telling you about," when Frost looked at her with a puzzled expression. "The coffee in the rain girl?!" she all but shouted.

"Oh! The angel?" Frost remembered. "Well, the angel is leaving the bar," he nodded to Maura's retreating form.

Jane followed his eyeline and quickly looked back at Frost who made a dramatic gesture for her to follow the blonde out of the bar and Jane took off toward the exit. She barely heard Korsak yell, "Where are you going?!"

When she exited the bar, she noticed Maura walking to cross the street.

"Maura! Wait up!"

As soon as Jane made her way back to the other bartender, Maura took that as her cue to leave. She tried not to wonder about his flirting comment because it felt like she had Jane's undivided attention but if she did this all the time, then it wasn't really special was it?

She stopped and turned quickly when she heard a familiar voice call her name.

Jane stopped her light jog and stood just close enough to half invade Maura's personal space but could only stare at her.

"I'm sorry, I didn't really think this far," Jane dragged her hand through her ponytail and looked at Maura expectantly.

"I settled my tab with one of the waitresses when I saw you were busy," was all Maura thought to say.

"I know," came Jane's reply as she stepped a little closer.

"Then why did you follow me outside?" Maura whispered in question. She could smell the lavender on Jane's skin.

"Um, I was wondering if you'd like to grab a coffee some time?" Jane was now also whispering while she tried to make out the perfect combination of smells coming off of Maura.

"I'd love to, Jane," Maura smiled.

"Great," came Jane's whispered reply as she pointed behind her. "I should get back…" she said again as she started walking backward with a shy smile on her face.

"Jane," she heard Maura say her name, or rather saw it fall out of her mouth.

"Yes…" Jane felt like she was 16, asking out the girl in her history class all over again.

"How am I going to get a hold of you?" Maura asked, pleased with the flustered look on Jane's face.

"Oh," Jane physically facepalmed herself before walking back to Maura again and handing Maura her cellphone. "Put your number in there and I'll text you."

Maura took the phone and quickly added herself as a contact on Jane's list before handing it back.

"Don't take too long to call," she whispered while she stepped closer to Jane and placed an unexpected kiss to her cheek, winked and walked across the street.

Jane stood frozen on the spot where Maura left her with a silly smile on her face before looking down at her phone.

Maura Isles.
