Return of the Heroes Part I

"TAICHI-SENPAI! LOOK OUT!" Daisuke screamed with all his soul as he rushed towards his mentor.

Taichi tipped his head back and peered at the sky. The last thing he caught a glimpse of was a pink lightning bolt descending to his location, intending to strike its mark.

Before he even had a chance to breathe, let alone panic, he felt a strong, sturdy body tackle him to the floor. He couldn't see who it was because his eyes were squeezed shut. The two stayed there for a minute, waiting for the noises of the current situation to die down.

"I-I think I'm... okay now!" Taichi managed to speak up. Opening his eyes slowly, he found himself sprawled under his junior's body frame. He had saved him. It was then that he noticed that the young boy was trembling. Even more surprising, he was trembling as well. His face was buried in Taichi's chest, but it was understandable.

He had almost lost his life. If Daisuke was any slower in saving him, he would've been a roasted chicken already. A cooked piece of meat served up on a platter right now. It was even worse that the young boy had risked his life to save him. He could've been killed along with him.

That would've weighed heavily on Taichi's heart.

"Taichi, Daisuke! Are you guys okay?" Takeru and Sora made their way towards them, fighting the strong currents that were pushing them back. Hearing them approaching, Daisuke pushed himself off Taichi and offered him a hand, helping him up. Both their hands were still shaking, and they stood on wobbly feet, their hearts racing intently.

"You... saved me!?" Taichi stated, shock still evident in his voice.

"Of course I did! Now you owe me! You're taking me out for Takoyaki this summer! Your treat!" He smiled lightly, the rumbling of his stomach making his statement more credible.

The moment they had reached the two boys location, Sora instantly threw her arms around her best friend. He could feel her whole body shaking. Her tears stained his blue soccer jersey. She was clenching onto him tightly, like he would vanish into thin air the moment she let go.

"It's okay! I'm okay now. I promise." Taichi softly whispered to her, his hands rubbing her back gently in an attempt to comfort her. After he was sure she okay, he gently wiped her eyes clear of the salty liquid, before returning his attention to the situation around them.

It was a complete disaster.

There were countless hordes of digimon on the loose. The ones he could recognize were a couple of Tyrannomons, Bakemons, Tuskmons, Snimons and Mammothmons. They blanketed the entire city, leaving destruction all throughout their wake.

The kids could see the faint traces of collapsing buildings in the distance, but the black smoke radiating from the the open fires made it hard to see. It covered some the sky, making it look like a scene straight out of hell.

"Why is this happening?! All the gates have been closed for a year now! So why?" Miyako questioned, dropping to her knees in pure shock and fear. Tears began to stain her glasses, and small sobs escaped her lips as she looked at the damage. Sora and Ken instantly moved to comfort her.

They all knew how she felt. Millions of questions rose in their heads, but it would have to wait. They had to find some way to stop what was going on.

"What do we do now big brother? Mom and dad -"

"I'm sure they're okay! They're probably at the evacuation center, along with the other citizens. Right now we need to figure out a way to stop this!" Taichi interrupted.

"But how? We don't have the digimon with us! We're completely powerless!" Miyako screeched, her eyes not leaving the field of grass below her.

Even if that was true, they still had to fight. They were the the Digi-Destined for god's sake. There had to be something they could do. "EVERYONE DUCK!" Ken yelled, his eyes catching a glimpse of something large and red speeding in their direction.

Proceeding with the instructions, they all dived to the floor, as the giant figure landed behind them, a crater forming at their feet. Turning to face the monster, they were all shocked to see Kuwagamon in front of them, scissor fangs bared, itching to pounce on the eight defenseless kids.

Taichi's mind instantly began forming some type of way to get them all out of this situation. None of the digimon were with them, so the monster's eyes were on them. There was only one thing he could think of, but it would involve him jumping head first into danger, something he was known for. Although it never got easy.

Noticing a random bike left behind, he immediately made a mad dash for it, drawing not only Kuwagamon, but everyone's attention to himself. "Hey you sorry excuse for a roach! Over here!" Taichi taunted, sticking his tongue out at the red insect.

"Tai what are you doing! You have no way of stopping that monster!" Takeru exclaimed. The soccer player let out his trademark grin, before pedaling away as fast as he could. Like a predator stalking its prey, Kuwagamon instinctively took off, his attention all on Taichi.

As they all couldn't help but stare at what just occurred, fear rose in each of their hearts, especially Hikari's. Before they could even register what to say, their attention was returned to the devastating scene behind them.

They would have to worry about Taichi later. They still had to figure out how to stop the rampaging monsters.

"Looks like things are going according to plan Mistress! Courage has effectively separated from the group, although a Kuwagamon is after him. Shall I exterminate it and capture him?" Astamon questioned, his eyes attuned to the movements that were going on below them.

"What are you, an idiot! What happens if you fail in subduing him?! A powerful digimon like you will warrant their attention immediately! Besides, they may not remember their powers, but I wouldn't take them for granted. I know that from personal experience!" The girl shivered a little. Her thoughts instantly ran back to the last time she had fought them.

"So how do we proceed now?"

"Did your digi-egg get dropped and cracked and that's why you're like this? We continue with the plan, like we've been doing! Now, let's move on to the next phase." Both their appearances began to change slowly.

Astamon's body and facial structure changed into that of an elderly man, while the girl's hair and eyes began to change a different color. They both hated what was gonna come next, but they knew the plan had to move forward.

The wheels of fate were turning, and unknown to everyone, each and every one of their lives were intertwined with one another.

"Please tell me you have a pretty good idea on what the hell is going on Koushiro! Everything's turning to shit real fast!" Yamato groaned, his eyes gazing out the car window.

The genius, for his part, was too busy on his laptop. He was tinkering with some type of special program, sent to him from Gennai. "Not a clue! But one thing I do know... is that this is a coordinated attack. Multiple portals popping up at the same time? That's no coincidence. Someone else is calling the shots!"

The moment the portals were detected, the man had contacted him almost immediately. Although he had countless questions to ask, they would have to be pushed to the back of his mind for the time being. There were bigger things to worry about.

Although the two Digi-Destined had managed to meet up with one another, there was something seriously wrong with the situation in front of them. First off, they weren't alone. While they were on their way to the field to join the others, a mysterious group of agents had offered their services to them.

What was even more strange, was that they knew about the digimon.

They were aware of what was going on around them, and it didn't seem to faze him. Also, their Calligraphy teacher, Daigo Nishijima, was among them. They both had many questions, and although he assured them that he would answer them and to stay focus on the main thing, they couldn't help but wonder.

"What are you even doing anyways?"

"What does it look like?"

"It looks like you're wasting away on that computer, when you should be finding a way for us solve this!", The impatient blond raised his voice.

Before Koushiro had a chance to respond, an unknown voiced called out to the teen out of nowhere. "Yamato? Yamato!"

"Huh? Who said that?!" Yamato asked, his eyes looking around the car.

"Yamato! Yamato its me! Its Gabumon!" Gabumon's voice echoed out. Looking towards the screen of the laptop, shock crossed Yamato's face as he was met with about six pair of eyes.

"Hold out your digivice and point it at the screen!" Koushiro demanded. Doing as he was told, the two had to shield their eyes from a blinding blue light. Letting the light die down, the Bearer of Friendship was surprised to see his partner in his lap, staring directly at him.

"Gabumon! You're a site for sore eyes!" Yamato smiled, gently lifting his hand and softly petting his nose.

"Still playing it cool aren't you? You haven't changed one bit, but it's still good to see you Yamato!" Gabumon smiled brightly.

"Hey, its not fair! How can Gabumon get to come out but we can't!"

"I wanna come out! Koushiro let us out!"

"Is it dinner time? I'm getting hungry all of a sudden!"

"How is this possible Koushiro? I thought the portals were closed?" Yamato asked confused.

"Look around you Yamato! Do you still believe that with what's going on? Besides, when the portals were opened, it allowed our digimon to cross through as well. All we have to do is aim our digivices at my computer, and they can enter through the screen." Koushiro explained slowly, making sure the blue-eyed teen could easily grasp what he was saying.

It was truly a blessing that Gennai had managed to come up with this on the fly.

"Get ready you two! We're approaching the designated location! We should be there in five minutes!" Nishijima called out, stepping his foot on the gas. He was dead set on getting them to where they need to go.

"Hey Koushiro!" Yamato whispered, pulling the teen closer towards him. "You think we can trust these guys?! I mean, they show up outta nowhere, knows who we are, and more importantly, they know about the digimon! Not to mention, our own teacher, who've known for a year now, is one of them!"

In a sense, Yamato was absolutely right. They had no means of interpreting what this organization's intentions were. While it looked like they were helping them, at the drop of a coin, they could also easily betray them. He had learned from his experience with Datamon, that it was better to know your allies thoroughly before you could trust them fully.

Although, he was willing to hold out hope on the fact that their teacher was apart of them.

"All we can do for right now is trust them Yamato! We can worry about what's going on later! Right now, our main objective should be to group up with the others and find some way to close up these portals!" Koushiro explained, his eyes filled with a sense of determination. That was one of the things the others admired about him.

He knew when to prioritize certain things over his own emotions. It was something even Taichi had come to rely on when his own impulses would try to take over.

"Damn it! What do you mean he gone?! Shit! I'll have to make a detour then!" Nishijima hissed into his communicator, a scowl forming on his face. The tone of his voice instantly put the two teens on high guard, a dark feeling creeping up on them.

"What's wrong Mr. Nishijima?" Koushiro asked hesitantly.

"It seems a digimon attacked the Digi-Destined! Taichi decided to draw its attention and split off from the group. Its currently chasing him through the city!" Fear rose on both of their faces.

They knew that before long, the monster would catch up to Taichi. While they believed in his stamina, they knew that he couldn't outrun the thing for long. They had to save him, that much was certain, but they couldn't ignore the others.

The red-head brain instantly began swirling ideas. He himself could go to Taichi's location, but he was the only one who could properly work the program on his laptop needed to summon the digimon.

If he went, they would only have Garurumon, and he doubted that the champion could do much against the monsters rampaging through the city. There was only one thing that came to his mind.

"Yamato -"

"I'm way ahead of you Koushiro!" Yamato interrupted, a small smirk making its way on his face. "I'll go and rescue that idiot myself! If anyone's gonna kill him, it's going to be me!"

"Got it! I'll send you his coordinates via digivice!" Koushiro fingers glided on his keypad, his attention focused on the screen of his laptop. "Alright, coordinates have been sent. Good luck Yamato!"

"Thanks! You ready Gabumon? I hope you haven't forgotten how to do this?!" Yamato teased, using half of his strength to open up the van's door. He couldn't help but admit that the cool wind felt good flowing through his hair.

"Are you kidding! It's just like riding a bike!" Gabumon exclaimed enthusiastically, his fur blowing in the wind.

Pulling out his digivice and scanning over the city, the two partners shared a somber look between each other, before a blue light started to overwhelm them.

"Hey! You guys!" Nishijima yelled out, before shielding his eyes from the growing light.

"Gabumon digivolve to... GARURUMON"

From what once stood the coated-cover reptile digimon, a gigantic blue, white and silver colored wolf stood. Yamato couldn't help but smile a little once he saw the mighty Garurumon running adjacent to the van, his strong legs keeping up with the momentum of the vehicle.

Looking back once more at the Bearer of Knowledge, the blond teen gave a thumbs up before jumping onto the back of his partner, the two speeding off in the opposite direction.

Hang on Taichi! You better not be dead by the time I get to you!

"Hurry guys! This way!" Sora screamed out, directing the others to a nearby underpass. Everyone quickly made their way inside, before moving deeper into the structure, away from any eyes.

Scanning her eyes around, she released a sigh of relief when she noticed that none of them were injured. They had been through hell trying to find somewhere safe. The district was overrun with rampaging digimon. Not to mention, there were still innocent civilians trying to get away from all the carnage.

"Shhh! It's okay Kari! Everything's gonna be okay! Knowing him, Tai probably managed to get away and is on his way back to us right now!" Takeru rubbed Hikari's back, trying his best to soothe the crying girl. She was a total mess, and with good reason too.

Taichi had just up and left them. They knew that he was only protecting them Kuwagamon, but they were still scared for him. Even though he wasn't completely defenseless, all of them knew for a fact that he had no chance of going toe-to-toe with a large digimon. Maybe a small one, but definitely not one of Kuwagamon's height.

They were all really worried for him. Their faces said it all. The only one who didn't seem affected was Sora. She was too busy worrying about the others. She couldn't afford to give into her feelings! Not right now at least!

"Hey! You okay?" Miyako asked the orange-haired girl, slightly pulling on her arm and moving her to the side.

"Yeah, never better! Why do you ask?!" Sora questioned, wiping some sweat from her forehead.

"Y'know, it's okay to worry about yourself at times! You should take a break, or else you'll pass out!"

"I will... soon!" She began to speak, but before she could, the lavender-haired girl tugged on her arm more fiercely.

"You can show that you're worried about him y'know! We all are! You and Kari are the closest to him, so it's not so surprising that you're trying your best to be strong for her."

She was right! She was trying her best to stay strong. Not just for herself or Hikari, but for everyone else also. While Taichi and Yamato was away, she was the only one capable for calming everyone down. One of the many responsibilities she had taken upon herself. Of course she was worried about that brown-haired idiot. He would always run head first into danger. Always leaving them behind.

All without a second thought.

She hated that! Always wondering if he was injured or not! Always praying for his safety! But most importantly... he always left her alone. She knew that he never meant to, but she also didn't know why she felt like this towards him. He was the only person who could get this feeling out of her. Not even Yamato was able to make her feel like this when they were dating.

She had believed in him though. When all else failed, he had managed to bring them together multiple times. All she had to do was trust him.

"You're right! I am worried about him, but it's okay! That idiot may not look like it, but he's incredibly resistant to dying! He's like a cockroach!" She let out a small smirk, her eyes making direct contact with the young girl. "I'm sure he's fine Miyako! We just have to trust him alright, and thanks for worrying about me!"

"Don't mention it! After all, what are friends right?!" Miyako smiled lightly, before the two went to rejoin everyone.

"ARGHHH! I'm sick of all this waiting and hiding! We should be out there crushing these guys, not waiting to be crushed instead!" Daisuke yelled at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing throughout the abandoned structure. Everybody had to cover their ears from the roaring soundwaves.

It had been about somewhere close to an hour since they had entered the underpass. They had decided to take a breather, all huddled around in a circle, each one coming to terms with what was going on around them. Even Hikari had finally managed to calm down. After a little bit of comforting from someone who was able to understand her feelings for her brother: Sora, she slowly was starting to feel a little better.

"Keep your voice down Daisuke! Unless you want us to become digi-food early!" Miyako hissed, violently pulling the teen back down to the ground.

"What do you expect us to do! Without the digimon, we're completely powerless!" Ken reasoned, his navy blue eyes focused on his D-3. Like they were praying the small device would light up, his partner appearing before him.

"What do you think we should do Sora?" Cody questioned, causing everyone's attention to fall on her. She was currently attending to her sister-like figure. After calming her down, Hikari had decided to lean herself on the Bearer of Love's shoulder, as she felt calmer when she was closer to her. The older teen wasted no time in soothing her.

"Hmmm." Sora put a hand on her chin, thoughts trying to form their way in. "Daisuke's right!"

This elicited a handful of surprised gasps from everyone.

"Bingo! In your face!" The young goggle-headed teen pointed his finger in the girl's face in a gloating manner. Although he soon regretted it when she grabbed the said finger and started to bend it backwards.

"Sora, you know as well as I do that we're basically setting ourselves up for suicide if we go out there, right?!" Ken hesitated, confusion apparent in his voice.

"I know ken, but like I said before, Daisuke's right! If we sit here and do nothing, we're basically screaming to be attacked! Our best bet right now is to attempt to move through the district unnoticed. We may be able to find someone who could potentially help us." Sora explained.

"But what if we can't?! This plan has too many holes in it!" Ken countered. Before Sora had a chance to get her words in, a voice no one had heard in a while spoke up.

"I say we go for it!" All eyes turned to face brown orbs staring fiercely at them.

"Kari?!" They all whispered quietly. These had been the first words she had said ever since she finished crying. She was so quiet, it was almost like she was just a hollow turtle shell.

"What are you saying Kari?" Takeru asked worried.

"Isn't it obvious?! I'm sick of hiding and cowering in fear! While we're all here, my brother's out there being chased by a man-eating monster!" This statement cause everyone to bow their head in shame. "He created a diversion so we can all get away, not so we can be tied down to one spot!"

Sora couldn't help but smile at the words that came out the young female's mouth. She was really the younger sister of Taichi Yagami. None of them knew why, but the words that always flew out the Yagami siblings were always so impactful, so... radiant. She had the same fire as him in her eyes also.

A fire that could potentially burn the world down, unless focused on a single goal.

"So, what do we all say to that?!" Daisuke was the first one to speak, a huge smile plastered on his face. He immediately walked over to the Child of Light and put a hand on her shoulder, his mind definitely made up. He was content with following their plan.

No one's feet moved. They were still weighing the pros and cons of the situation they were in. "Count me in!" Takeru exclaimed, taking his position next to Sora.

"Awe man what the hell! It beats waiting to be killed at least!" Miyako cheered, shrugging her shoulders and moving next to Daisuke. Before long, everyone had made up their mind and joined the larger group, all except for Ken.

"What are you waiting for Ken?! Hurry it up already!" Daisuke complained, his energy levels rising.

Multiple scenarios began to play in the young man's mind. He promised he wasn't doing this on purpose. He was just worried. This plan had a huge amass of holes in it. One wrong move and they could all be slaughtered in the blink of an eye. He had already lost his brother. He didn't want anyone else he cared about biting the dust.

Damn! No matter how you slice it, there's no way out of this! Sooner or later, we're gonna be spotted, then its over!

Before Ken mind could conjure up anymore dire scenarios to plague him, he felt a calm, collected hand on his shoulder. Turning to look over himself, he found himself staring into the eyes of his best friend, a grin appearing on his face.

"It's going to be okay dummy! We're all gonna make it out of here alive, so stop worrying!" The spiky-haired teen offered a hand to him. Out of everyone in the group, he was the only one who could jog him out of this mindset.

Just like he had saved him during his post-Digimon Emperor days. After all, they were DNA digivolving partners. From bitter enemies to best friends!

The moment the two boys hands joined together, the structure above them began to violently shake back and forth. Bits and pieces of the underpass began to crumble and break apart, the ground trembling below them. It was coming down all around them, cracks growing larger and larger.

As if on instinct, the seven kids made their way out of the structure, turning back to see it completely demolished and obliterated. What caught their attention though wasn't the destroyed place they had just come out of, but what had caused its destruction. From the rising dust, a giant Mammothmon was rampaging, everything in its sights being crushed. Soon enough, it didn't take long for it to spot them.

"RUN!" Takeru screamed, his feet breaking out into a run. No sooner had he said that though, the behemoth roared, its trunk flapping through the air intensely.

Each of the kids found themselves running for dear life, the thought of becoming that monster's appetizers not appealing to them. It didn't help that the district was halfway in ruins already.

Not only was they fleeing from a giant elephant, they also had the trouble of dealing broken sidewalks, destroyed cars on fire, and rubble from messed up building littering the floor. It was almost like a game of parkour.

Scratch that! It exactly WAS a game of parkour!

"Twin Sickles", two pink crescent-like beams sliced through the air, dead set on finding flesh to cut through. Sora had just enough time to look back and tackle Hikari to the ground, the attack going over both of their heads into a nearby car.

Rubbing the back of her head grudgingly, her mind raced to the person she had just saved. When they all started running, she instinctively grabbed Hikari's wrist and took off. This was like her little sister, so she was more than willing to protect her. Besides, she knew how Taichi would react if his precious sibling had gotten hurt.

"Hikari!? Hikari! C'mon Hikari, you gotta wake up! Open your eyes!" Sora shook her violently, hoping she would see those brown eyes.

Soon enough, the younger girl began to come soon, a small smile forming on her lips. "I swear, you and Tai are so rough when it comes to waking someone up! Almost had my brain raddling!" Instantly pulling the girl into a hug, she let out a sigh of relief.

Hikari had reciprocated the hug, her smile not letting up. The only thing that brought the two back to reality was the fierce noise in the air. It sounded awfully familiar! Like a pair of insect wings drumming through the sky. A big green blur had caught their attention, zipping through with such speed. Coming into full view, they were shocked to see a Snimon hovering above them.

Not wasting anymore time, the teens broke off into another run, their feet guiding them through the streets. Although, it was becoming highly apparent that they couldn't keep it up for longer. Heavy pants came both of them, hot beads of sweating began forming, causing the strands of hair left out to stick to their foreheads.

Peering over to her sides, fear began to rise deep in her stomach. She couldn't glimpse nor see the other Digi-Destined through the wreckage.

Are they all okay?! They're not hurt aren't they!

Shaking her head rapidly, she decided to push these thoughts to the back of her head. She couldn't afford to worry about the others right now! Her main focus was on getting the two of them to safety. She couldn't see the Mammothmon anymore, but that didn't mean they were out of danger yet.

Not with Snimon breathing down their necks!

"Ultimate Twin Sickles", this attack came in the form of two more crescent beams, adding the number up to four in total. What was odd about the attack was that it wasn't directed towards them, but around them. For Sora though, she instantly knew what that meant for them.

Dammit! We're trapped! Stuck in between two hard places!

And that they were.

The beams had cut deep grooves into the ground in front of them, backing them up behind a giant piece of rubble, effectively holding the two hostage. What was worse was that it was coming ever so dangerously closer to them.

Putting up a hand in front of the younger female, Sora instantly pulled her closer behind her, her mother-like instincts kicking in. Turning to look at her face, she was shocked by what she saw.

The face that Hikari had on wasn't one of fear or shock. No, it was one of determination and ferocity. Sora couldn't help but smile a little at what she saw. She reminded her of her best friend so much.

She really was his little sister.

Turning her head to face the digimon in front of them, a strange feeling grew in her stomach. For some reason, she felt an absurd amount of power rising in her core. Like a strength she knew she had deep down inside her, aching to come out. The weirdest part though, she could vividly remember feeling like this before.

Hearing the screeches of the monster before her getting closer, she immediately closed her eyes, waiting for whatever was gonna happen to happen. Unknown to her though, her hands began to slowly glow a crimson-like color, before getting brighter and brighter.

"Electro Shocker", an third voice screeched through the quietness. Sora hesitantly opened her eyes, and was met with a huge surprise. All she could see was Snimon getting completely obliterated by an unknown, but familiar, attack. As if it had never happened, the brightness of her hands instantly died down.

Searching the area for where the attack came from, happiness and shock could be shown directly on her face from what she saw. She was almost as giddy as Taichi every time the topic of soccer was brought up.

Fiercely protecting the two teens from any threats, was a giant insectoid-like digimon. It was blue in coloration, with a giant black skull helmet and a long horn covering its head. Two pair of large wings adorned its back, and two sets of arms hung firmly from its midsection.

She knew that digimon intently... and the person who controlled it.

"Kabuterimon!" She screamed, her voice filled with pure bliss. The digimon in question turned and gave her a thumbs up, before crouching down and letting the person on top of his head slide down his back.

"Koushiro!" Hikari exclaimed happily, taking off head first towards the red-headed genius. Sora found herself doing the same thing, and in no less than a few seconds, they found themselves firmly hugging the young man.

"Nice to see you guys too, but you're kind of cracking my ribs!" The Child of Knowledge said through gritted teeth. After releasing him and apologizing, the two noticed the rest of their friends coming up behind him.

"We came the moment we saw Kabuterimon! We managed to lose old mammal face by hiding!" Daisuke explained through heavy pants, his back slouched over and his hands on his knees.

"I'm glad I made it in time! We're gonna need all the help we can get!" Koushiro instantly pulled out his most trusted laptop, getting the program that Gennai had sent him ready.

"What are you talking about Koushiro? And what do you mean by 'All the help we can get'?" Cody questioned slightly.

"Yeah! We should be getting a move on, in case Mammothmon decides to come back for round two!" Miyako fumed, her mind racing with countless possibilities.

"Why run, when we can fight?!" Koushiro answered mysteriously. Putting the program up on the screen, he motioned for them to turn their attention to it. "Now, if you would be so kind as to hold out your digivices and point them towards the screen."

"Why? What are you planning?!" Doubt rose in Daisuke's voice.

Slapping a palm on his face, anger began rising in his chest. Feeling that anger bubbling up, he took a deep breath.

"It'll take longer if I explain it to you! So, for right now, I just need you to do what I say! Okay!?"

Each one of them shrugged lightly, before doing what the young man had asked them to do. All seven digivices were pointed at the screen, and in a flash, a bright light soon began to envelop the area.
