Notes:
Okay... 3 chapters in one day! I know it's a lot, but all three of these chapters were written in one sitting and I believe that they together really set up this story.
It was the night after Leo's first surgery, and Arizona was tossing and turning in her bed. What the hell happened in there? I'm so glad I caught it, but we were so close to losing him. We just have to be more careful next time. Make sure we keep a better eye on the monitor and use different anesthesia to make a complication like that less likely.
Arizona continued to toss and turn for most of the night until her thoughts landed on Callie. Maybe she isn't as bad as I thought. She seemed really worried when Leo was crashing. I even had to reassure her that he was going to be fine before she was able to keep working. If I didn't know any better, I would almost think that Callie cares more about her patients than I do. Maybe there more to that tough exterior than I thought. And on that note, Arizona fell asleep to another fitful night full of nightmares from her past.
The next day right after rounds Arizona was paged to the ER. "911." That's never good.
Arizona made her way to the ER as quickly as possible. Her breath caught in her chest the second she saw the patient. Her patient was a 14-year-old girl with a severed leg. She was in a boating accident. Dr. Torres must have been the Ortho surgeon on call because she was already examining the patient. For the first time, Arizona wasn't angry about having to work on a case with Dr Torres.
Looking back at the patient, her heartbeat sped up again. She knew she needed to go into the trauma room and help, but she needed a minute to compose herself first. There was no way they were going to be able to save the girl's leg. She knew it, but she was sure she was going to do everything in her power to try. Arizona took a deep breath and quickly got to work with Dr. Torres.
After eight grueling hours in the OR, they still weren't able to save the girl's leg. Callie did all that she could, and Arizona could tell that she really did care about the patient, but ultimately it wasn't possible to save it. Arizona knew that going into it, but it still hurt.
As they were scrubbing out, Callie said, "I wish we were able to save the leg, but at least it's a clean cut. She will most likely be able to get a prosthetic and her life will be normal again soon."
Arizona scoffed, "Her life will never be normal again."
Then she walked out of the scrub room and into an on-call room. Arizona didn't mean to snap at Callie like that, but she would never understand what this girl is about to experience. When she wakes up, her whole life is going to be different, and Arizona just hated that she couldn't stop it. She knew that she wanted to be there for her patient when she woke up so she slept in the on-call room and told a nurse to page her when the patient is up.
The next morning she woke up to the page that the patient is up, and Arizona made her way to Paige's room as quickly as possible. It seems that Callie had the same idea as she was making her way to the room as well.
"Hi, Paige. How are you feeling?" Arizona asked while conducting the typical post-operation exam. "Everything looks good."
"What happened?" Paige asked quietly. Arizona took a second to look at Callie. She didn't know if she'd be able to tell her even though she knew she wanted to be there. Callie must have sensed something in Arizona's stare because she began explaining what had happened and that Paige had lost her leg. When Paige broke into tears it became too much for Arizona, and she quietly excused herself. She wasn't scheduled to work today, so she changed her clothes and headed back home for a much-needed day of rest and tears.
What the hell has gotten into her? First, she snapped when I said that the girl would get a prosthetic, and then she almost started crying in the patient's room. I always knew she got attached to her patients, but man this was more than even she expected. It was weird though. The typically bubbly Arizona who always had a smile seemed to be different. Looking into her eyes in the patient's room I saw pain. There may be more to this happy-go-lucky girl than I thought.
The next few weeks went by pretty quickly. Callie stayed on Paige's case, but Arizona had yet to visit her again. It seems that Arizona gave the case to the other pediatric attending Dr. Karev, which was slightly odd but it was what it was. Paige still was in the hospital, but it was time for her to get a prosthetic fitted. She obviously hadn't been in the best mood, but she really seemed to be going downhill. Hopefully, after getting the prosthetic she will be a bit better.
Arizona continued down the hallway still actively avoiding Paige's room. She so much wanted to be there for the girl, but her wounds were too fresh, and she felt like she would cause more problems for the girl than she would solve.
"Dr. Robbins!" Arizona quickly turned around when she heard her name. It was Dr. Torres almost running towards her.
"Hello, Dr. Torres," Arizona said with a smile while trying to suppress her emotions. "What's up?"
"It's Paige."
At Callie's words, Arizona's heart sank. Is she ok? "What happened? Is she okay?" Arizona asked almost franticly.
"Physically, yes. Mentally, hell no! She is really struggling. She is refusing to get out of bed to get her prosthetic fitted. The longer we wait, the harder it will be for her to acclimate to it. Also, her other leg will begin to atrophy even more than it already has, but you know all of this. She is just lying there refusing. She is saying she wished she died."
Arizona actively had to try and hold back her tears at Callie's words. She knew all too well about what the young girl was going through, and knew that she could try to help, but didn't know if she would be able to keep her emotions out of it enough.
"That's so horrible, but why are you coming to me about it?" Arizona asked while trying to keep her composure.
"I don't know. I just thought you had some kind of connection with her. It seemed like you were very invested in her case, and then you were gone. I don't know if you wanted to be transferred off of it or not, but regardless, Paige needs someone right now, and for whatever reason, I think you can help. You are always so great with your patients, and your happiness is infectious. Sure it can sometimes be annoying, but it is also really effective in making others happy even when they don't want to be." Callie finished.
Something about Callie's words made Arizona grin a bit.
It's weird how without really saying anything Callie is able to make Arizona feel so much. She had to do this. She had to try and help. She would hate herself if she didn't.
Arizona put the smile back on her face even though she definitely didn't feel like smiling and said, "Lead the way.
" At that Dr. Torres smiled and led Arizona to Paige's room.
"Hi, Paige. How are you doing?" Arizona said as she entered the room.
Paige looked at her with a confused expression.
"I'm one of the doctors who operated on you. I saw you briefly after surgery, but you probably don't remember. How are you feeling?" Arizona clarified, then asked again.
Paige didn't even look away from the TV after the second question and just responded "fine," very flatly.
"I heard that they could try and fit you with a prosthetic today! Isn't that exciting?" Dr. Robbins tried to get her attention again.
"Yeah!" Paige replied with sarcasm dripping from every word. "I'm so glad I get a peg leg so that I can go and be stared at by everyone outside this hospital as well."
Arizona understood what the girl was feeling all too well.
"I know it's hard Paige. I know it sucks, and it feels like your life is over, but it's not. Your life is just getting started and sure there are a couple of things that you can't do, but there are still so many things that you can. Your life isn't over yet." Arizona said calmly and with such sincerity in her voice. Callie was still standing in the corner of the room watching the two women interact with such concentration.
"YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING" Paige yelled. "YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD IT IS OR WHAT MY LIFE IS LIKE. YOU KNOW NOTHING, SO DON'T PRETEND YOU KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE IN MY POSITION."
Arizona took a deep breath. She knew at this moment what she had to do, but she didn't know if she was brave enough. The only person at the hospital who knows is Jo, and she really wanted to keep it that way.
I have to tell her. She feels alone and like nothing will ever be okay again. I have to show her that it will, but Callie's here. She'll know too and then she will tell everyone, and then everyone will know. I can't be selfish now. So what if everyone knows and treats me even more differently than before? This isn't about you it's about her! I have to tell her.
Arizona quickly turned around and looked Callie in the eyes. She could see that she was very intently focusing on what was going on and wanted to know what was going to happen next. Arizona turned back around and looked Paige directly in the eye as she pulled up one of her pant legs revealing her own prosthetic. "I do know. Trust me. I know more than I wish I did, but I do know what you are going through." Arizona said.
