Monday morning Teddy woke up to find a note under her door again.
Good morning Teddy
I know you have an early meeting but I wanted to say good morning before you left. I'll see you at work later today. Have a great day.
Love,
Owen
Teddy was dressed and ready and just needed to put Allison in her stroller. She would sign Allison into daycare when it opened at 6;30 giving herself a few minutes to get organized for her day.
Teddy grabbed another post it and wrote as she chugged her first coffee.
Good morning,
Have a great first day! I know you'll be great. See you later.
Love,
Teddy
Teddy grabbed her bag and Allison's and put them in the stroller basket before strapping her daughter in and heading outside for the short ten minutes walk to work. Teddy liked the walk as time to clear her head.
Fifteen minutes later Owen opened his own door to head out. He wanted to be early for his first day and have time to settle Leo in daycare. He had Google mapped that route the day before and easily found the daycare. Parking the stroller with some others he saw the one from the landing sitting there. He had heard her taking to some one before her voice disappeared. Teddy had a child somewhere here. He looked at the cubbies and found Leo's name on one next to the name Allison Altman.
Altman. Teddy. Teddy had her Allison. She had always wanted a daughter named Allison. He looked around but couldn't figure out which of the three baby girls was Allison.
He proceeded to the hospital after saying goodbye to Leo and going through their usual drop off hug routine.
Teddy stood in front of her secretary giving orders for the day, "when major Hunt arrives do not show him to my office. I will come get him when I am ready. Do not give him my name."
"Ma'am are you sure," the young soldier asked.
"Do as I say corporal," Teddy commanded, "Major Hunt is a tall man with red hair. He will be early. Offer him water or coffee."
Walking into the office Owen though he saw her. A taller blonde woman in uniform with her hair in a bun. Even the way her bun was done looked like how Teddy had always done hers.
"Major Hunt," the corporal asked.
"Yes," Owen replied.
"I have a note for you from your CO she will be with you shortly," the corporal said.
"Thank you," Owen said, taking the note.
"Have a seat sir," the soldier said.
Owen took a seat and read the note. Intrigued, confused and possibly hurt. Teddy had a baby and was now his boss. He had been her boss in Seattle but this felt different.
Hunt
Welcome! I'll come find you soon. I just have to finish up a couple things before I see you. I'm sure you've been to daycare by now and seen the name on the cubby next to Leo's. I will explain. She's perfect. We can talk about that tonight, not here, not at work. I have to be in charge here. Bring Leo to my place after work and I'll have dinner for all of us. Today just get to know the place. I saw the schedule you are not in the OR until Thursday. Get your feet wet and learn your teams. You've got this major.
Altman
Teddy looked around her office, there was a photo of Allison on the wall by her computer but Owen wouldn't see it from the other side of her desk. It was one of her favorites the first time Allison had smiled. She had tucked the two framed photos away for now. She wanted to tell Owen in her own way on her own time. Tonight she told herself.
Owen read the note. He really wanted to know about Allison. Teddy had a daughter, how old? She was less than a year, 18 months ago Teddy would have told him if she was pregnant. 18 months ago she told him everything. Then in one night he ruined it. One careless comment and he ended what should have been the most perfect beginning. They had talked about a family that night she wanted a baby, just one, after that night had she decided to do it alone? Tired of waiting for the right guy.
Teddy glanced at her watch, 7:25, five minutes, she knew he was waiting. She wasn't ready yet. This was Owen. he had flown across the globe for her and she had thrown him out after a perfect 24 hours. 24 hours that had left her with their daughter. A child Owen knew nothing about. She knew Owen had seen the name at daycare that morning. Leo Hunt's name had appeared beside Allison's on the cubbies. Telling Owen about Allison could go one of two ways he could be furious at Teddy and yell and swear or he would be happy, it was what he had always wanted. For the first time in her life Teddy was nervous to see Owen. Unsure what could happen next. She took a deep breath. Get yourself together, it's just Owen. It's only Owen. The notes had been sweet. He loved her, at least he did in his notes. She missed him. She thought of him everyday, dreamed of that one perfect day together.
Owen folded the note and tucked it in his pocket. He wiped his hands on his pants, his palms were sweaty. This was Teddy, it was just Teddy she was his best friend 18 months ago. He could figure this out. They had children now but that was okay, it would work it had to. She was Teddy and he would love her to his last breath.
Teddy walked out of her office to the waiting area.
"Major Hunt," Teddy said.
Owen stood, it was her, his Teddy. Standing in uniform smiling at him, for a moment it felt like time had never passed he wanted to run up and hug her, kiss her even.
"Colonel Altman," Owen greeted with a salute.
"Come with me major," Teddy replied all business. She had to be all business her instantics told her to run up and throw herself into his arms. Maybe with him here they could work it out.
Owen followed Teddy down the halls silently.
Stepping into her office she gave him a quick hug, pulling back before he could return it properly or she decided to never let go. This was not being cool she told herself.
"Have a seat," Teddy said motioning to the chair across from her desk.
Owen scanned the room and saw the photo of a baby only a couple months old pinned to the wall beside the computer.
"You look good Teddy," Owen said.
"I'm in uniform," She joked.
"Colonel," Owen said, "wow. Congratulations!"
"Thanks," she smiled, "when they said I was getting Major Hunt I didn't know who I was getting. I was half expecting Megan to bounce in here. I encouraged her promotion."
"Just me," he said, "if we're going to work together we need to talk about that night."
"We do need to talk later," Teddy said, "not here. Not now. Not at work."
"Is that her," he asked pointing to the photo.
"It is," Teddy said, "it's a few months old now but it's one of my favourites. Kids later Hunt work now."
"I work for you," Owen stated, "what exactly am I doing?"
"My old job," Teddy replied, "chief of surgery. You've done it before in Seattle."
"I answer to you," Owen clarified.
"Every doctor, nurse, medic and medical personnel answers to me," Teddy replied, "you're in charge of surgeons. You need another trauma surgeon and a cardiothoracic surgeon. I have my recommendations for both. I've already requested that the trauma surgeon be given the offer, I expect her to accept and you will need to make an offer to the cardio guy. He's experienced, not military but has been in the field."
"Megan and Riggs," Owen asked.
"Yes," Teddy replied.
"My mom," Owen said.
"We can bring her here," Teddy said, "you are eligible for a nanny, your mom could do it. I have one on call."
"I know you said no kids but I have to know how old," Owen asked.
"Almost nine months," Teddy said, "she is the best thing I've ever done. Owen we will talk later. You can see her tonight. I need to meet your Leo. Kids when we're off. We're working here Hunt."
Almost nine months Owens' head was reeling. Allison was his, she could be his. It lined up he was here long enough ago that Allison could be his. But Teddy said they would be okay. She had told him she was on the pill when he realized what they had done.
"Leo is the best thing I've ever done," Owen agreed.
"You're finally a dad," Teddy smiled, "you always wanted that."
"I am and you're happy as a mom," Owen said.
"She's perfect," Teddy replied, "I should have done it sooner. Maybe if things had been different with Henry I would have."
A soldier appeared in the door.
"Captain Miller," Teddy said, "take Major Hunt for a tour then bring him back here so I can go over his duties."
"Yes ma'am," captain Miller replied.
Owen stood and followed the younger man.
"Have you known her long," Miller asked, he had seen his boss smiling and almost teasing the new guy.
"20 years," Owen said, "we served together in Iraq after 9/11 and worked together in Seattle for a few years."
"She's good," Miller said, "an amazing teacher."
"She is," Owen said, "incredible surgeon."
"It's good to have her back," Miller said, "she took six months off with her daughter."
"Have you seen her daughter," Owen asked.
"I've seen them getting groceries a couple times but she's pretty private," Miller replied, "cute baby though."
"She always wanted kids," Owen commented.
"Do you have children sir," Miller asked.
"Leo is two," Owen replied.
They completed the tour of the facility.
Owen had a bunch of questions for Teddy, a few about work but mostly about Allison.
He returned to her office and waited while she finished with a patient.
"Hunt let's go four paitents coming in your scrubbing in with me," Teddy barked.
Owen followed Teddy to the OR and they scrubbed in together. As they worked it felt like no time had passed. He tried to get her talking about her personal life like they used to. But she kept the wall up.
Scrubbing out Owen said, "I miss my best friend."
"Not here," Teddy said, "tonight. We can talk later. I'll make us dinner. Does Leo have any allergies?"
"No," Owen said, "what time?"
"I'm off at four thirty and will pick up Allison then go to the grocery store so 6," Teddy said.
"We'll see you then," Owen said, "I'll bring the wine."
"See you then," Teddy said, "you'll get to meet Allison. She's just starting to like food."
"I'm sure she's gorgeous like her mom," Owen said, "Leo is a messy eater."
"Owen not here. No tomato sauce got it," Teddy smiled. She knew what she was going to do. One of Owens' favorites, roast beef with roasted vegetables and potatoes. She had time, she had a lot to explain.
At the end of her work day Teddy said good night to the people she needed to and walked to the daycare. She signed Allison out for the night savoring the way the little one snuggled into her when Teddy picked her up.
"We're seeing daddy tonight," Teddy said, "he knows you exist but not that you're his. He's going to love you and be so mad at me."
Owen called his mom when he got home and Leo settled with a few toys.
"Owen, how was the first day," Evelyn asked.
"Work looks like work," Owen said, "I found out who my boss is."
"Do you know them," Evelyn asked.
"I report to Teddy," Owen said, "she's good. We're having dinner tonight."
"You talk to her often and didn't know," Evelyn said.
"We hadn't talked in 18 months," Owen said, "she has a daughter. Allison. She's nine months."
"Is that why you haven't talked to her. She had a baby with someone else," Evelyn asked.
"I went to see her 18 months ago," Owen said, "we fought then she didn't return my calls so I gave up."
"What do you know about her daughter," Evelyn asked.
"Just the name and the one photo in Teddy's office," Owen said.
"Cute baby," Evelyn asked, "name?"
"Allison," Owen replied, "the picture was cute but Teddy said it was a few months old."
"Megan talks to her," Evelyn said, "maybe your sister knows something."
"I tried that yesterday," Owen said, "Megan told me I had to talk to Teddy."
"Then you go talk to Teddy," Evelyn said.
"Six," Owen said, "we're actually in the same building on the same floor shes across the landing. Leo and I are seeing her and Allison at 6."
"Be open minded," Evelyn encouraged, "let her speak before you jump to any conclusions."
"I'll try," Owen said, "I think Allison might be mine."
"She would have called," Evelyn said, "it's Teddy. She cares too much about you and your happiness to deny you that."
"I hurt her and pushed her away," Owen said.
"What happened," Evelyn asked.
"I flew out to tell her I love her and we spent 24 hours together and then I said something stupid about Ameila and she threw me out," Owen said.
"Is there a reason that her daughter could be yours," Evelyn asked.
"Yes," Owen said, "the time line works."
"What are you going to do," Evelyn asked.
"Go for dinner tonight and talk to her," Owen said.
"What about Leo," Evelyn asked.
"He comes with me," Owen said, "Teddy wants to meet him. I want to meet her Allison. They go to the same daycare."
"How did you find that out," Evelyn asked, "did you see her at the daycare?"
"I signed Leo in this morning and the cubby next to Leo's had the name Allison Altman," Owen said, "there was a stroller outside her door when I got here and then I saw her pushing a stroller in town on Saturday. I assumed she was babysitting at first."
"Listen to her," Evelyn said, "Teddy always has a reason why she does things even if we don't understand at first. How's the rest of your group?"
"It was feel out the new guy," Owen chuckled.
"How did Leo do," Evelyn asked.
"He was okay," Owen said, "we'll both have to learn german fast. They speak both at the day care so he'll learn it faster than I do."
"Its good for him to have a second language," Evelyn said.
They made small talk for a bit longer before Owen decided to get ready to go. He made sure Leo was happy with a few toys and hopped in the shower making sure to shave carefully knowing Teddy had always hated stubble. He wanted to hug her and hold her. The hug this morning in her office had not been enough; he had wanted to really hold her and kiss her but she had barely touched him before she pulled away. He understood that at work she had to be in control and tough but it was him.
Teddy called Arizona the one person who knew the truth of Allison's father.
"Teddy," Arizona answered.
"He's here," Teddy said, "in Germany. In the same building. We worked together today."
"Does he know," Arizona asked.
"Tonight," Teddy said, "he's coming for dinner. I'm making his favourite."
"Does he know she exists," Arizona asked.
"He does," Teddy said, "we passed notes under doors all weekend and this morning."
"What does he know," Arizona asked.
"Her first and last name and that she's nine months," Teddy said, "he saw her first smile picture in my office. He adopted a little boy named Leo. he's two."
"Two kids is a lot to work out," Arizona said.
"I just need to tell him Allison is his," Teddy said, "she's more like Megan Hunt all the time."
"Tonight Teddy," Arizona said, "pop the bubble."
"He's going to be so mad at me," Teddy said.
"You had his daughter," Arizona said, "Owen will forgive you. Your Teddy and Owen."
They spent a few minutes catching up before Arizona was paged to see a patient.
Teddy checked that Allison was still happy in the play pen and went to get ready. She chose a black wrap dress with white polka dots that fell to mid calf and curled her hair making sure her makeup was perfect. She wanted to look feminine a contrast to the uniform he would see her in everyday at work. When she was ready she changed Allison into a clean onesie, skirt and leggings even putting a flower headband on her head.
Teddy finished setting the table for four, two adults and two kids with Allison's high chair on one side and a booster seat she had for a few friends kids on a chair for Leo. it looked like a family meal. As Teddy put the last fork on the table there was a knock at the door. She picked Allison up and went to answer it.
Owen stood on the other side holding his breath. Leo on one hip and a bouquet of lilies Teddy's favourite flower in the other.
