Disclaimer: I do not own Familiar of Zero or Harry Potter, they belong to their respective owners. I'm not making money, this is just for fun and a hobby at most.
AN: Okay this is another side project story. This chapter might be a little boring due to exposition, though I tried to put in some Fawkes fun too. It's shorter then I intended, as I was aiming for 4k+ words, but I'd rather release this then the wait. I'm sorry. So, if you are fine with all that, please enjoy!
Chapter Three: Phoenix At Last
Everyone in the room went silent as Colbert burst into the room. "What is going on here!?" He shouted.
The scene was a bit shocking to say the least to Colbert. Since when had Miss Valliere had a sword? Why did she even need one? Her bad spellmanship not withstanding, she could easily protect herself with her wand, if her explosions were any indication. There was an odd looking portrait as well, it Almost looked like Osmond, but the man it contained was obviously someone else. It was also quite fascinating that it was somehow animated, something Colbert was keenly interested in. The final matter he thought about as he stared at the scene before him was the matter of the elf and maid in the room.
Yes, an elf, though was it? Clearly the historians had screwed up the details if it was, but a real honest to god elf hadn't been seen in over a century to the general populace. Sure the holy church of Brimir brought up the idea of a crusade into the holy lands every decade or so, but no country honestly gave into their demand very often if at all. And Colbert was no stranger to the ways the church worked in cases of heresy. His own history was proof of that after all.
Still that left identifying the creature mainly up to him and other scholars in the school. As it was, generally elves had become a convoluted image to the general populace. The church hardly ever printed or taught anything about their most dangerous foes, other then the fact they used wand less magic and had long pointed ears... All other details devolved into child bedtime stories meant to scare noble and commoner children alike, in fact if one were to ask a noble or commoner, none of their descriptions of an elf would be the same. Well other than the two other sticking points. Otherwise it was a big game of gossip and hearsay. Still he had let his thoughts get away from him.
"Professor perhaps you should start by taking a seat and having a lemon drop?" The bearded bespectacled man in the portrait addressed him. A man whom Colbert was certain might be misidentified as there own headmaster from afar.
"Yes very well." Colbert took a candy. "There doesn't appear to be any seats however.." Colbert looked around the room.
He so more oddities then in his own lab. Books where piled everywhere, unknown strange objects cluttered the floor. Still no real seats where to be had, just messes.
"Nonsense professor." Albus interjected. "Winky do be a dear and grab some chairs for our room's guests."
"Right aways, Mr. Dumbledores Sir!" Winky popped out of existence, only to shortly reappear with several chairs. Oddly enough they bore the Hogwarts crests.
"If I may sir, I have a few questions about whats going on here?" Colbert asked as he took his seat. It was quite comfortable.
Louise and Siesta also pulled up seats, although Siesta hesitated to sit, it was not her place as a commoner.
"Now as I was asking before, what exactly was going on here when I entered?" Colbert asked the oldest looking animated portrait in the room.
"That is a most wonderful question professor." Dumbledore responded.
"What you likes some teas mister, missys?" Winky asked everyone.
"Ah yes thank you." Colbert bowed as he took the cup.
Colbert had just thanked the creature, he was still unsure whether or not it was truly an elf, but it was as good a place to start as any. "Um, what manner of creature are you, um Winky?" Colbert asked as he drank his tea.
"She was a house life under my Employ, I imagine she is now serving as a servant in Hogwarts." Dumbledore clarified, giving no time for the house elf to respond herself.
So she is an elf, a house elf, a servant? "What manner of Elf is a house elf, what do you mean by servant, and what is this Hogwarts of which you speak?" Colbert asked.
"In France do you not utilize house elves? I'm afraid I haven't visited France since my battle with the dark wizard Grindelwad. Despite my post of Supreme Mugwump in the International Confederation of Wizards, I hadn't had much time to leave the country. Well a house elf is a bonded creature which serves its entire life happily in service to its master, without a master to sustain them, I'm afraid they will just rot away. I'm most surprised you have not heard of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It's by far the largest and finest magic school in the world." Dumbledore finished.
This was a bit of information for Colbert to take in. He could infer that these witches and Wizards where Mages, although he had never heard of this school, or a place called France. These House elves did not sound like the elves he knew of. Had such a creature existed here, they would have found themselves enslaved by the nobility. The mention of a battle with a dark mage was rather concerning, but given this mages apparent age and title, it was safe to assume that battle was long since over.
"I'm afraid I've not heard of France, or this school you mentioned, however I can assume it's a school which teaches the future generation of mages in the use of magic?" Colbert asked after a quick thought.
"Most peculiar, I would have assumed my errant Familiar Fawkes had found himself a new Master in France, as you were all speaking french?" Dumbledore spoke aloud as he pondered.
"Um, Professor Colbert, my Familiar bird is called Fawkes!" Louise cried out at the recognition of what she just heard.
"What?" Colbert spoke aloud as he looked over at the bird sitting on Louise's shoulder.
"So you are indeed Fawkes new master. I'm glad he was able to find a new companion. The last one hundred years would have been so bland without his company." Dumbledore looked longing at his old Familiar.
"You're so old! Older then Osmond!" Louise couldn't help but shout.
"Miss Valliere please respect your elders. Mr. Dumbledore sir, my student did not steal your familiar right?" Colbert asked the sentient portrait.
"Of course not. Professor I've already passed from this world, I'm just a memory left behind of an old man." Albus informed him.
"I'm relieved to hear that, but it also makes me curious as to how the enchantment on you functions. To what faculty does this portrait mimic your true self... Um before your death?" Colbert curiously asked.
"It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, professor, nothing more. Yes I am indeed dead, but no one ever truly dies. Knowledge can only be lost, therefore it's traditional for all Headmasters to copy their memories into portraits upon their death. I am exact copy of Albus Dumbledore from before the moment of his death, preserved to guide, lecture, and advise future headmasters of our school." Albus finished.
This was fascinating, a magic capable of preserving ones self even after death? Although the idea of living forever to guide the future generations sounded like a daunting task.. If he told old Osmond about it, he might just quit. "So you were a headmaster at this Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?"
"Yes for the last twenty six years of my life it was my honor to serve the school in such a capacity." Albus ate another lemon drop as he finished.
"This is all very fascinating, and you say that Miss Valliere now has your Familiar, do you know it's species?" Colbert asked, partially he was curious, another was an actual need to catalog Louie's Familiar.
"Ah Fawkes is a magical creature known as a Phoenix. Legends say they are near eternal beings with many magic abilities. Some even claim that phoenixes are the origin of all fire. They can die, but never has their been an instance where it fails to come back to life from it's own ashes. They can go wherever they wish in a burst of flame. Their songs are beautiful to hear. Their feathers so powerful they can be used to create wands. And finally their tears can cure almost any sickness or poison. Truly they are powerful mysterious creatures. Fawkes in particular habits which I can see young Miss Valliere has started to learn."
A Phoenix. A previous unknown magical species, a rare one at that. It's magical properties alone would make it highly sought after, perhaps more so then a Ryhme Dragon! Colbert thought.
Meanwhile as Louise listened to the old man, she had garnered a small amount of hope. Could her Familiar's tears cure her Elder sister Cattleya? "Um, Dumbledore sir, could my Familiar heal my sister's sickness? She has been ill since a young age, unable to leave her bed..."
"It may perhaps." Albus answered her. A smile on his face.
"Well I think I've figured out whats going on here enough. Louise, I will be taking this enchanted painting to see the headmaster. Siesta I leave you in charge of Winky the house elf, for now, so please have her and other staff refer to her by her name Winky, and not as an elf. Understand?" Colbert asked everyone else in the room.
The rest of them nodded their heads. Siesta popped away with Winky, and Colbert left with the painting. It seemed that Colbert's questions had only just barely begun. Old Osmond would be in for a surprise.
*Chapter Three: Phoenix At Last*
When she had returned, Fawkes had found quite the scene. Fawkes didn't not what she should do, her Master Louise was so angry at Winky. Had Winky brought snakes into masters room!? No she didn't smell any. Why couldn't Winky just be a good servant like her. Maybe it was because food was late!? No that can't be Fawkes would be to blame then! And that couldn't be possible!
What was going on now? Fawkes had dazed out again. It seems that one of the schools professors had barged in to quell the situation. Her former masters picture was also calming everyone down. Fawkes would need to get more delicious lemon drops. It was amazing what a calming effect they had. Yes, yes she would. That little candy shop in Diagon Alley that smells of calming droughts and potions would need to be visited again, soon.
Yes everyone had calmed down and left, her master was really happy now. Yes Fawkes had done it! Her presence had fixed everything! Still she was not happy the bald Wizard had taken her masters painting.. She had gotten that painting for her new master... It had nothing to do with the fact that her old masters snores lul her into sleep at night... Well she would have to go get it back later.
"So Fawkes, this Dumbledore was your previous master?" Louise asked the bird.
Fawkes started blabbing all about her previous master. It was not her fault her new master couldn't understand her perfectly good chirps.
"I see, what a beautiful song.. Still if there is a hope for Cattleya, and my magic. I owe you a lot of thanks Fawkes. Still your a Phoenix eh, I can't wait to rub it in Kirche's face. An eternal magical being who is possibly the origin of fire... I wonder if that's my element then?" Louise rattled on.
While her master prattled on, Fawkes landed over by the lemon drop bowl, these candies always calmed her.
"Oh shoot I forgot to ask the professor about testing my new spell!" Louise shot up from her seat, startling poor Fawkes.
"Oh sorry about that Fawkes. Well let go out and meet all the other Familiars! Since I know more about you now, I think we should introduce you to everyone!" Louise joyfully yelled.
Fawkes was happy that her master was no longer angry, and was now excited. Fawkes flew after her master as she left the room. Her master was even carrying one of her new books. Fawkes always did always like going on adventures.
