Best Kind of Surprises
Chapter 3
Andrea had to admit, she enjoyed having Mike with her. There were plenty of times, he came over after work and they would eat dinner, watch TV and then sleep next to one another. They fell into an easy and comfortable relationship. But all too quickly, things had to change. Mike had to go back out with the James and Andrea found herself missing him. She tried to occupy herself, but it was not working and she also didn't feel good. When it didn't pass after two weeks, she went to her doctor. After having a battery of tests, her doctor walked back in with a smile.
"What is it, Doctor Adams?" Andrea asked. She had had a lot of issues since being shot in Mayport. Nothing would surprise her.
"Congratulations, Andrea. You are pregnant!" Dr. Adams said.
"What? How is that possible? I'm too old!" Andrea asked.
"Well, you are not that old. Of course, there will be things that need to be watched for and we will refer you into an OBGYN that specializes in high risk pregnancies…if that's what you want?" Dr. Adams asked as she handed Andrea a box of tissues. As tough as Andrea was, she had tears rolling.
"I…had so many issues conceiving my daughter. I did IVF…everything. I wasn't even trying to get pregnant." Andrea said.
"Is the father different?" Dr. Adams asked as she rubbed Andrea's shoulder.
"Yeah. My husband and daughter died during the Red Flu." Andrea answered.
"I'm sorry. Not to be too personal, but its possible that some of the issues you had conceiving before was because of your husband. Lower sperm count. Did this baby's father…does he have other children?" Dr. Adams asked.
"Yeah. He had three. They've all died." Andrea said.
"Do you know if he and their mother had any trouble?" Dr. Adams questioned.
"Not that I know of. We'd been colleagues for years and from what I knew, Christine got pregnant easily and had uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries." Andrea answered.
"Andrea, I understand at your age, news like this can be shocking. Perhaps, go home and talk to the baby's father to see how he feels before you make any decisions. Abortions are a little more difficult to get now." Dr. Adams said as she gave Andrea some pamphlets.
"I doubt I would get an abortion. I just am surprised. Can you go ahead and get the referral for the special OBGYN?" Andrea asked.
"Of course. There are risks of course, but there is also no reason why you couldn't have an easy pregnancy, uneventful delivery and a healthy baby." Dr. Adams said.
"I don't know how Mike will react. He loves kids, but he lost three. He might be scared." Andrea remarked as she blew her nose.
"Or thrilled. You never know. Just relax and take it easy. That will be the best for this baby." Dr. Adams stated.
"I know it would be hard to say, but how far along do you think I am?" Andrea asked. She had picked up her purse and stood up slowly.
"Given the hormone levels, I would guess four to six weeks. Is that possible?" Dr. Adams asked.
"Yes. Right before Mike left." Andrea answered.
"The OBGYN will know better and we'll get you in as quick as possible. Andrea, I had a baby a little later in life and it is hard, but it is also sweet. I find myself enjoying my son more then I did the others. I love all four of my kids, but there is something different about the bond. He or she cannot replace your daughter." Dr. Adams said.
"Thank you." Andrea said simply.
"Your welcome. My nurse will call you with an appointment date and time. If you have any questions, call. I will also send a prescription to your pharmacy for a prenatal vitamin." Dr. Adams explained before they parted ways.
On the way home, Andrea stopped at the store to pick up her prescription. As she waited, she walked down the baby aisle and found a stuffed elephant. It was too cute and Andrea couldn't resist. She found herself looking at the little outfits, the cost of diapers and all the new things they had for babies. She hadn't had a baby in over fifteen years and the thought terrified her. She wasn't sure what Mike's reaction would be either, but one way or another, they were going to have a baby.
