A/N: Repostingchapter three because I just wasn't happy with the ending the first time around and I needed to fix some other things. If you hadn't seen it yet, happy reading!
The feeling of Harlow moving into a more comfortable position on her chest made Emily smile as she lounged on the couch with her tucked inside her tank top, her nose brushing warmly against her hairline as she held her in place with the hand on her back and watched her stare up at her from where her head rested on her collarbone. Since this was her first time being alone with her since bringing her home from the hospital and Andrew would be back in no time since he was just picking Keely up from the airport, she had decided not to think about all of the little chores that still needed to be done for the time being. Instead, she had found a relaxing playlist to put on and given her little girl a quick bath before settling down on the couch with her so that they could both have some skin-to-skin until Keely and Andrew arrived home.
It had only been a week since she had given birth to her, but she had already come to love pretty much everything about being her mother. She loved nursing her even though that meant that she was up every two-to-three hours with her in the night, she loved playing with her to keep her happy while Andrew bathed her and she enjoyed taking her out to the park or the BAU when she had the energy, but her favourite part about being her mom was still skin-to-skin. She adored how all she had to do was tuck Harlow inside her shirt whenever she was in one of her bad moods and she would stop crying, bury her head in her neck and settle down in an instant. It was just the most incredible feeling. 'Mommy won't be having you back for the rest of the day once your daddy and sister are home,' She told her quietly. 'I won't get a look-in.'
She already knew that she was going to be longing to have her back once Keely had arrived and was obsessing over her all day long, but at the same time she was so looking forward to introducing them to each other and just sit and watch them bond. Thinking back to how helpful and impatient Keely had been the whole way through her pregnancy, it made her feel like an idiot for worrying so much about how she was going to react when she and Andrew had decided to sit her down and tell her the news. She had thought that she was going to be unhappy or hurt somehow when she learned about the baby, but the moment they had shown her the scan she had squealed and hugged them both before running upstairs to find her cell phone and take a picture of the scan so that she could text it to her friends and tell them all about it.
Andrew had had to work quite a lot during her pregnancy and he had agreed to do overtime on occasion so that he could bring home more money, so Keely had been the one to accompany her to some of her appointments and she had loved how she had squeezed her hand with excitement every time Harlow had appeared on the screen. She had been just as downhearted as her and Andrew when they had explained to her that Harlow had Down's syndrome, but she had refused to allow that to have an impact on her love for her and she was so proud of her for how understanding she had been. Even though Harlow was her biological daughter, in her mind Keely was as much her child as she was and there were now moments when she actually forgot that they weren't related. She loved her so much and that would never change.
The sound of her phone ringing made her and Harlow jump a couple of minutes later, but just as her daughter began to pout she kissed her on the temple and was relieved when all she did was cuddle up to her and bury her head in her neck again. Once she was sure that she was comfortable, she reached for her cell phone and sighed with happiness at seeing that Andrew was calling her from the car before accepting the call and putting the phone to her ear. 'You know better than to use your phone while driving…' She told him, a teasing tone in her voice.
'Relax, Em, you're on speaker,' He chuckled which made her smirk. 'I'm just calling to give you a heads-up. We're about three blocks away.'
'Oh, great,' She replied while sitting up, Harlow nuzzling further into her neck. 'Penelope called and said she's made the reservation.'
'So, you guys actually managed to make a decision at last?' Keely asked.
Emily laughed, shaking her head. 'No, we couldn't decide whether we wanted Chinese or Italian, so we told the guys at the BAU that it was up to them and of course David got the last word which means we'll be going to Padrino's. He's a tough critic when it comes to Italian food too, so it has to be good. They know about the engagement now as well, so that's all that they're talking about right now and he's insisted that we all head back to his after dinner so that we can have a small celebration. Dave never does anything small though, just to warn you.'
'Sounds exciting.' Keely giggled.
'Knowing him, it will be,' Emily replied. 'Right, I had better go and get this little one sorted out, but I'll see you both in a minute.'
'See you in a minute.' Andrew and Keely replied before she ended the call and tossed her cell phone into the space next to her on the couch.
Once she had sat in silence with Harlow snuggled against her chest for a couple more seconds, she stood and nuzzled her nose into her hair while carrying her through to the bedroom. She then closed the door behind her and walked over to the dresser by the window, taking out a diaper and the gorgeous sleepsuit with bunnies all over it that JJ had bought for her a couple of days ago. 'You are spoiled; you know that?' She mumbled to her baby girl as she took a moment to gaze down at her before carrying her over to the bed and slowly sitting down on it. Harlow grizzled in disapproval when she eased her out from underneath her tank top and laid her down on the bed, her face scrunching up as she cried while she removed the diaper that she had been wearing and set about changing her into the fresh one she had just gotten out.
Honestly, if there was one thing that her little girl hated most in the world then it was having her diaper changed.
She rested a hand on her belly once the new diaper was in place and shushed her while stroking her thumb against her skin, a tender smile gracing her lips when Harlow started to settle down and chewed on her hand. 'You can't be hungry again already, mommy only gave you a feed an hour ago,' She reminded her as she slipped her pacifier into her mouth before quickly dressing her in her sleep-suit, easing her back into her arms again and looking over at the wall-clock as she got up. 'Why don't we see if you can go another half-an-hour, baby, and then we can think about letting daddy give you a bottle?' She suggested, the soft huff that Harlow let out causing her to laugh and kiss her nose.
'Em? We're here!'
The sound of the door to the apartment opening and Andrew calling to her made her heart race and she wasted no time in turning around and heading over to the bedroom door, her hold of Harlow tightening as she opened the door before entering the living room with a smile. The moment Keely saw her she put down her suitcase and practically ran towards her, the two of them giggling as she caught her in a tight hug before drawing back to look at her. 'How do you look so good after just having a baby? You don't look half as tired as dad!' She teased.
'Excuse me, I'll have you know that I've been waiting on these two hand-and-foot since we brought Harlow home.' Andrew argued.
'He has, I have to give him that one,' Emily admitted. 'He won't stop cleaning and I haven't had to wash a dish since she was born.'
Keely turned in place to look at her dad, resting a hand on her hip. 'You never did any of that for me!'
'Let me know when you have a baby and then we can talk about that,' He shrugged. 'And no, that does not give you my permission at all.'
Keely and Emily laughed together at that before she turned around to face her again and felt her heart melt when she lowered her gaze to Harlow. 'Oh, she's so beautiful…' She breathed, her hand trembling as she stroked the curve of her cheek warmly with the back of her palm.
'Do you want to have a hold?' Emily asked.
'Can I?' The hope was evident in Keely's eyes when she looked up from her sister for a second.
'Of course.' Emily nodded before starting to ease Harlow into Keely's arms, the love she had for both of her girls deepening as she watched them both stare at each other in silence for a while. It was obvious that Keely was already smitten with her and that was only made clearer when the teenager looked up into her eyes again after swaying from side to side with Harlow nestled in her arms for several long moments.
'You know; ever since I was a little girl I've always wanted a baby sister,' She revealed. 'I used to ask dad for one for my birthday every year.'
'No kidding,' Emily shook her head. 'And what did he say?'
Cradling Harlow a little closer, Keely chuckled. 'He said that I couldn't have one because babies are too hard to wrap.'
'That sounds like something he would say…' Emily snorted. 'How does it feel now that you do have one?'
'Amazing,' Keely admitted before lowering her gaze to Harlow again and smiling when she saw that she was still staring up at her, her eyes closing when she brushed a kiss against her hairline. 'She might look different, but she's so perfect and I'm always going to look out for her.'
Taking a step closer to her, Emily reached up to slip a curl back behind her ear when she looked up at her before kissing her temple tenderly. 'You know that your dad and I love you just as much as we love Harlow, don't you?' She asked as she stepped back to look at her again.
'Yeah, I do,' Keely reassured her with a nod. 'Actually, I've been thinking a lot about what I want to call you and I still want to call you mom. It sounds nice and…and I haven't seen my birth mom in years, so would it be all right with you if I started calling you mom instead of Emily?'
'Sweetheart, I would love that so much,' Emily beamed. 'Why don't you have a seat with Harlow and watch some TV while I help your dad?'
Once Keely had nodded and headed over to the couch with Harlow in her arms, Emily entered the kitchen and walked up behind her fiancé before slipping her arms around his waist and rising onto her tiptoes to kiss the back of his neck. She moved to stand next to him before he had the chance to turn around and leaned against the kitchen counter, a sigh escaping her as she looked over at Keely. 'Look.' She told him.
Andrew turned around at her words and smiled at seeing Keely curled up on the couch with Harlow in her arms, completely uninterested in the television or her cell phone as it sat beside her untouched. He could tell by her face that she was well and truly in love with her and he couldn't resist putting an arm around Emily's shoulders, his lips finding the side of her head before he kissed her. 'Our girls…' He murmured.
'I love you.' She told him, moving closer to him so that she could wrap her arms around his waist.
'And I love you.' He assured her.
A comfortable silence fell over the two of them then as they decided to leave the dishes for another time, content to just stand and absorb themselves in their first moment as a proper little family.
Slamming the cubicle door behind her once she had excused herself from the meal and all but stormed into the restroom, Emily pressed her back against it and let out a sob as the tears that she had been holding back for almost an hour came streaming down her cheeks. She had tried her hardest to let the comments that people had been making about Harlow go over her head, reminding herself that she didn't know these people and would probably never encounter them again, but the comments had just gotten more disgusting as time had gone on and she had hit her breaking point. How could people say such horrid things about a baby? How could they stand right behind her and say that she and Andrew were selfish for deciding against terminating the pregnancy because, in their opinion, Harlow would have no quality of life?
Part of her was relieved that Penelope and JJ had been adamant that they sat next to her at the table because she knew that Andrew would have gone mad if he had heard what those people had said. Generally, he was the sweetest man you could ever meet and so laid back, but it was a completely different story when it came to defending those that he loved. She could still remember how he had almost ended up in a full-on fight with Harper Wilson's dad a year ago because she had been making Keely's life a misery at school and he had turned a blind eye. He had sworn blind that Harper wouldn't do half the things that Keely had accused her of and that he had believed Keely had made it all up to get attention. Andrew had seen red at that and gone to hit him, but Keely had begged him not to and so he had eventually backed down.
She doubted that anyone would have been able to keep him from lashing out if he had heard the comments made regarding Harlow.
He adored her and to say that he was protective was an understatement, so she was positive that things would have gone seriously wrong.
Tearing some toilet paper from the roll once she had managed to calm down a little, she wiped the tears from her cheeks before sucking on her bottom lip to keep quiet when the door to the restroom squeaked open and someone began approaching the cubicle she was hidden in. 'Em…?' She let out the breath that she had been holding as tears started dancing down her cheeks again when Penelope called to her while knocking gently on the door, her breath hitching in her throat when she turned around and unlocked it before practically throwing her arms around her neck and sobbing. Even though her head wasn't in the right place at that moment in time, she was able to feel Penelope running a hand up and down her back and when she felt her hair being stroked she realised that JJ had also left the table to come and check on her.
Knowing that she was surrounded by two people that loved her and she could trust, she allowed herself to break down completely and just sob while they held her until she somehow managed to muster up the strength she needed to stand on her own and look the two of them in the eye. 'You two shouldn't have to miss out on the meal,' She shook her head as she brushed the tears from her cheeks. 'Go on, I'll be fine.'
'You clearly don't know the two of us well enough if you think we're going to leave you on your own when you're like this.' JJ scoffed.
'Emily, what's up?' Penelope asked.
Sighing as she headed back into the cubicle for a second to grab some more toilet paper, Emily walked past them and headed for the sink so that she could soak it and use it to wipe away the mascara that had run down her cheeks. 'Andrew and I knew that things were going to be hard when we were told about Harlow's Down's syndrome,' She admitted while looking at the two of them in the mirror when they moved to stand with her at the sinks. 'We knew that she was going to have health issues and that there were going to be some people who judged her based on the way she looks, but we didn't think we would have to worry about that part until she was enrolled in school at least. People have been making comments about her all night though, they keep looking at her like she isn't human and she doesn't deserve any of that.'
'Who's been saying what?' Penelope asked, Emily turning her head in her direction as she could hear the anger in her voice.
'Someone said something about Andrew and I being cruel because we decided against getting a termination when the midwife suggested it at the scan,' She sighed. 'Someone else said that she has a face that only a mother could love and there were so many other comments, but I'm not going to talk about those ones because it'll just ruin tonight and that's the last thing I want. I…I suppose I just never thought anyone would say anything, especially when I was sitting right there, but I think I'm just being oversensitive because my hormones are everywhere and I haven't been sleeping because Harlow loves waking me at every hour of the night. You know me, I'm not the kind of person to get so upset about something someone I don't even know says. I'll be glad when I start getting back to normal because all this crying is killing me.'
JJ ran a comforting hand up and down her back. 'You're getting upset about it because you're her mom and you've just had to sit there and listen to people make comments about her that they had no right to. The choices that you and Andrew made when you were pregnant are no one else's business and neither is how the two of you decide to bring her up. Harlow is your daughter and you both know her better than anyone else, so you do whatever is right for you as well as her and don't let anyone try and tell you how you should parent. When my mom came to visit for the first time after Henry was born, she tried to take control and tell me how I should raise him and I almost threw her out. You are an incredible mom and you are more than capable of doing this, but please remember that we're all here to help when you need it.'
Looking back and forth between JJ and Penelope for a moment, Emily smiled for the first time since entering the restroom as she shook her head. 'How did I ever leave you both when I love you so much? I must have been insane to move all the way to Denver.' She laughed gently.
'You were in love,' Penelope reminded her. 'You deserved your happy ending after all you went through and it let you get closer to Keely.'
'She's a love, isn't she?' She smirked.
JJ nodded, unable to stop herself from smiling. 'We're going to miss you all so much when you go home.'
'Well, that's the thing…' Emily sucked on her bottom lip as she turned around and leaned against the sink, her heart racing when Penelope and JJ moved to stand in front of her with wide eyes. 'Remember how I said that we would only be coming for a month so that you could all meet Harlow and I could have you all on-hand? Well, he and I got to talking when we were packing our bags and he asked how I would feel about him putting in for a transfer so that we could move back here permanently. He managed to find out that there was an opening for a new agent, so we sat down with Keely and asked her what she thought about spending her senior year here and she was all for it. She can't stand her school in Denver and Andrew and I want her to be able to make the most of her final year at school, so it all kind of fit into place.'
Penelope reached for her with tears in her eyes. 'So…so you're not leaving?'
'We're not leaving,' Emily brushed her fingers against her hair while hugging her. 'But it was meant to be a surprise, so don't say anything.'
JJ squealed softly when Emily released Penelope from the hug and turned to give her one. 'We won't say a word!'
Once the two of them had brought their hug to an end, Emily took a step back from her before taking a deep breath and brushing her fringe out of her eyes. 'We should probably head back in. It's not going to be long until they form a search party to come and look for us.' She said.
'Do we have to? I could so do without listening to Reid go on about the history of Italian food for another hour.' Penelope groaned.
'Pen, that's what the wine menu is for.' Emily smirked.
'Welcome back, Emily Prentiss.' JJ teased before the three of them burst into laughter and began wandering out of the restroom together.
Before the three of them had even had the chance to make it back to the table, Emily spotted Andrew heading towards them and stopped for a moment. 'Order me a glass of red and we'll be there in a minute,' She told them before they nodded and started walking back over to the table just as Andrew came to stand beside her and laid his hands on her waist through her dress, pulling her close. 'Everything all right?'
He chuckled with a shake of his head. 'I should be asking you that, you were in there for ages. Are you okay?'
'Yeah, I'm fine.' She reassured him while running her hands along his forearms through his jacket.
'Promise?' He raised his brow at her.
'Promise,' She rose onto her tiptoes to brush a soft kiss against his lips. 'Promise…'
'Dad had told me so much about Emily that I practically knew everything about her when I met her for the first time. Honestly, he would not shut up about her,' Keely groaned as she stood on the patio in David's back garden while giving a speech later that night, her words causing everyone to laugh before she looked over at her dad and Emily and watched her wrap both arms around his waist while he pulled her close. 'He told me how great she was at her job and how she had the ability to put fear into a suspect with a single look, but there was one thing that he spoke about more than anything else and that was how incredible she was. He told me that she had the largest heart and that she was just beautiful inside and out, and I the moment I met her I realised that he hadn't been overselling it as much as I thought he had been.'
She and Emily shared a smile before she cleared her throat and continued. 'My mom and dad divorced when I was young and my mom…she didn't want me, so my dad raised me and until I met Emily he was all I had ever known. It was a little hard in the beginning, learning to trust her and open up because dad had dated other women in the past and for some reason or another they hadn't stayed, so I was worried that the same would happen again. Emily promised me that she wouldn't leave though, and there was just something about the way she said it that told me that she was telling the truth. She didn't have to accept me. She could have walked away when she found out that dad already had a kid, but she didn't and she's honestly been more of a mom to me over the past two years than my real mom ever was.' She admitted.
'When I'm sick, she goes around the house and grabs all the blankets and we spend all day watching Disney movies in our pajamas on the couch. She sits with me for hours and just listens when I have a problem and it doesn't feel weird to get upset in front of her because I know that she understands and she cares. I've wanted dad to propose to her since she moved to Denver and I kept dropping hints, but he was just too clueless to realise it at the time and then he goes and does it when I'm not there! Rude…' She smiled when everyone burst into laughter again. 'But in all honesty, knowing that Emily's going to be my stepmom is just the coolest thing ever and I love her so much more now than I did before because she's given me the baby sister I've always wanted. She and dad aren't married yet, I know, but she's already my mom.'
Her voice broke slightly with emotion and she couldn't help but laugh when Emily reached up to brush a tear from her cheek before her dad kissed her hairline tenderly. 'She and Harlow completed our family and I couldn't be more excited for the wedding, so to Andrew and Emily.'
'To Andrew and Emily!' Everyone held up their champagne flutes as they echoed her words.
She stepped down from the patio once she had ended her speech and walked over to Emily and her dad, tears rolling down her cheeks while she giggled when Emily took a step closer to her and pulled her into a hug. Grasping the back of her dress in her hands, she tucked her head into her neck and breathed in the scent of her perfume before sighing as she felt her stroke her back while she buried a soft kiss in her curls. 'You beautiful, beautiful girl…' She heard Emily choke out and she could tell that she had started crying as well. 'You mean the world to me.'
Pulling back from her so that she could look her in the eye, she let her brush the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand before she sighed. 'You know that I meant everything that I just said, don't you? I love having you around and you and Harlow do complete our family.'
'Oh, I know,' Emily reassured her. 'I know you did and I love you so much.'
'I love you too,' She wrapped her arms around her waist again and laid her head on her shoulder. 'So much…'
Heading into the living room while drying his hands on his pajama pants once he had washed and dried the dishes he had forgotten about that afternoon, Andrew smiled at seeing Emily and Keely asleep together on the couch. His fiancée had an arm wrapped tight around their daughter's shoulders and Keely was curled into her side with her head on her shoulder, her arm draped over her stomach as she snored into her neck. The two of them had wanted to watch West Side Story once they had gotten home and since Keely was on summer break he had agreed, but the fact that they hadn't even gotten halfway through it and they were already dead to the world told him how tired they were. He decided against waking them and telling them to go to bed because this was the first time he had seen Emily sleep properly since they'd brought Harlow home, so instead he took the blanket from the armchair and headed quietly over to the couch before covering them with it.
Once he had watched Emily pull Keely closer to her in her sleep and rest her chin on top of her head, he leaned down and brushed her fringe out of her face so that he could kiss her temple before heading over to the front door and switching off the light, allowing the light from the television to enable them to see if they woke through the night. His eyes stung with fatigue as he wandered into the bedroom he and Emily shared and made his way over to his baby girl's crib, a gentle sigh escaping him as he reached in to caress her beautiful face with the backs of his fingers. 'Your mommy might actually be able to get some sleep for once tonight, Harls…' He whispered before shaking his head at her when she pouted and huffed deeply, nuzzling her cheek against the mattress. Not only was she Emily's double, but she had gained her sass.
As if he needed another reason to adore her.
Deciding that it was time for him to get some sleep so that he would actually be able to make it through the night with her, he went to turn out the light before yawning as he returned to the bed and slipped between the sheets. It had been an amazing evening. He hadn't seen too much of his fiancée at the meal since Penelope and JJ had snatched her from him the moment they'd seen her and something had definitely been bothering her when she had disappeared into the bathroom for twenty minutes, but she had reassured him that everything had been all right and the night had been a breeze after that. His favourite part, hands down, had been Keely's speech though. She had planned and written it behind his and Emily's backs and it had been a complete surprise for them, but she had made Emily feel as special as she deserved and as well as that it had helped him to experience a newfound love and admiration for the three beautiful girls he was able to call his own.
They were so strong and smart and independent and he was never going to stop reminding them of how much they all meant to him.
No matter what happened.
