AN: Well. So much for regular updates. I am so sorry for leaving this story, I don't have any excuse except that I kind of forgot? And then lost inspiration. Yeah, I know, I'm a super unreliable updater and I can't thank you guys enough for your lovely reviews that eventually motivated me to write the next couple of chapters. I wanted to make sure everyone knows that this story is set before Infinity War and after Age of Ultron. It is also set after HoO but includes the bit from The Hidden Oracle when Leo returns. It does NOT include Jason's death (you probably already guessed that though, since he is alive and well in the first two chapters). Aside from that note, here is the next chapter!
Chiron
Chiron gazed out from The Big House to the arena, watching as the Demigods trained hard to hone their reflexes and fighting ability. He sighed. One day, all those children will have moved on and he would remain a sentinel.
He chided himself. Enough of that.
He was snapped out of his reverie by a hesitant voice calling his name.
"Chiron?" The voice seemed unsure, as if they were questioning their presence.
He turned and was met with a very familiar face.
He smiled warmly. "Maria. It's been too long."
She smiled back tentatively and greeted him with a hug.
"I wish I could say I was here for just a reunion but I'm afraid this is to do with S.H.I.E.L.D. . It seems one of our resident Demigods has gotten on the Director's radar."
Chiron sighed again. He knew exactly who Maria was referring to.
"Zeus save us all, it's Percy, isn't it."
"Is that even a question? I may not have been here when Percy was doing . . . well, whatever he was doing, but the stories of how much trouble he's gotten himself into has not escaped us older demigods."
"What has this Director found out?"
"Percy's school. . . misdemeanors mostly, though I'm assuming the incident with the St Louis Arch was monster related? And the sighting of him at Mount Saint Helens before it blew up and then the fact that he was spotted completely fine in New York is just a tad suspicious."
"A tad?" Chiron said amusedly
"Okay, a little more than a tad, especially to someone who is wary of any and every cat he sees."
Chiron sighed once more. Percy was incorrigible.
"Why don't you tell me how you've been doing, I thought you wanted to be a librarian?"
"I was twelve, Chiron. And a daughter of Athena."
"Well, a mentor can hope for a safe profession for their mentee in the mortal world. Why did you decide to become an agent?"
"Well, I started off in the Army . . .
Jason
Percy grimaced at the gash in his arm.
"Well, I may have been stupid enough to leave my gladius behind but for some reason I brought ambrosia."
Percy looked at Jason disbelievingly. "You thought that you wouldn't need your weapon for a fight but brought ambrosia for an injury?"
"Fighting monsters isn't the only way to get hurt! You could have . . . tripped on a tree root?"
"I'm more likely to have been knocked out with a brick than to have tripped on a tree root."
"Do you want the ambrosia or not?"
Percy sighed. "Yes."
"Then stop complaining about my flaws and admire my forethought. And take that brick comment back."
"Fine, I take it back. Now hand over the ambrosia will you?"
As Jason rifled through his bag for ambrosia, Percy bent down to restuff his bag and dramatically slung it over his shoulder, whacking Jason's head in the process.
Jason winced and rubbed his head. "See! Injury but no monster! Imagine if there was a brick in your bag or something, you could've concussed me!"
Percy looked thoughtful and began to walk. "Maybe you have a point."
Jason looked pleased, he may be forgetful, but he wasn't that forgetful. He grabbed the ambrosia out of his bag.
Percy glanced over his shoulder. "Are you coming or what?"
Jason began to walk quickly to catch up. As he approached, he watched as Percy's foot got caught on something and saw his friend fall on his face. Jason ran forward to see what had happened.
He looked down and snickered. It appeared that Percy had tripped on a tree root.
"Ow." Percy mumbled, rubbing his forehead which had taken the brunt of his fall. There was a welt rapidly forming.
"It appears that Prophecy Boy has been bested by a tree root."
Percy looked at Jason in disbelief, and looked at where Jason was pointing. Sure enough, there was an innocent root jutting out of the grass.
Percy sighed. "I guess you do have a point. Now give me that ambrosia, I don't want to have to explain this to Mom."
"Nuh uh, you doubted me buddy, if you don't explain this I will."
"Please? There's no way she'll let this go. Everyone in camp will know before the sun sets tomorrow!"
Jason seemed confused.
"I'm pretty sure Leo has invited himself over for lunch tomorrow. If mom mentions what happened to me. . . "
Jason handed over the ambrosia.
Percy
As he chomped on the ambrosia, he saw that they were almost at the apartment. Ahh, I can almost taste the cookies. Percy was thinking about how much he missed home when he felt a shiver run down the back of his neck.
He stopped walking and looked over at Jason. His friend was glancing around. It appears that he wasn't the only one who noticed something was wrong.
They continued walking.
"What do you think is following us?" Percy asked
"Dunno, empousai maybe? I'm not sure how many."
"Duck down the alley and let them corner us?"
"Set a trap. Good idea."
They strolled down the alley, waiting for the inevitable confrontation.
They waited for an incredible 15 seconds before breaking the silence.
"D'ya think they got lost?"
"I'm fairly certain they can smell us, Percy."
"Maybe we're just paranoid?"
"You're probably right, let's wait for a few minutes and then head back to your place."
Unsurprisingly, a few minutes was only one minute before the two got bored and wandered back to their initial destination. Home.
Natasha
Natasha was confused. She was monitoring S.H.I.E.L.D.'s extensive satellite imagery and facial recognition for Percy Jackson to inevitably be spotted, after all he was a civilian. Probably a civilian. Alright, probably not a civilian. She was still rattled by her recently regained memory and although Enhanced Individuals were no longer uncommon, having her memory tampered with was . . unpleasant.
She heard beeping, and realised that Jackson had been spotted. He was exiting a strawberry van – specifically Delphi's Strawberry Service – with another person (she assumed friend, but considered the hostage situation for a minute) that had stopped at Central Park. Natasha jumped on her motorcycle. She wasn't very far and Central Park had plenty of cover for surveillance.
She quickly caught up with the two of them and made sure she stayed back far enough not to be noticed. Though they seemed preoccupied. Beating up a chihuahua and an old lady? She squinted hard, remembering her memory of Jackson being able to manipulate what she saw, and saw that they were not having a violent episode against seemingly innocent bystanders. They were fighting a mutant beast of some kind with three heads and a snake lady using a glowing sword and an ancient looking dagger.
What. The. Hell.
In all her years, Natasha had seen a lot. But nothing equated to this. It was only her intensive training that allowed her to keep her cool long enough to watch Jackson and his friend turn the things(?) into dust. Literally. Where the beast and beast lady had previously been screeching was now a fine golden powder.
She sighed. Obviously she had to follow them.
Natasha watched as they began walking and arguing when Jackson hit the other guy with his bag. They argued some more and Jackson began walking ahead without his friend. She walked forward, blending in perfectly with her surroundings. She laughs silently to herself and thinks. Minutes ago, he was the epiphany of agility and grace when fighting a giant beast and now he trips over a tree root? Jackson really was a strange guy.
Now Jackson has a nice welt on his forehead to accompany the gash on his arm. Maybe she could get a blood sample. That's when the strangest part happens. Natasha sees Jackson eat what looks like a lemon square and then watches in disbelief as the welt fades and the gash closes up. She shouldn't be surprised. Of course they have magic lemon squares.
She continues to follow them when she notices a falter in their steps. The blonde one looks around suspiciously and she realises they know they're being followed. Damn.
Natasha looks around and runs down the nearest alley to climb up a fire escape to the roof, where she continues to follow them. She sees them go down a different alley and stop. They look around impatiently and she figures that they're waiting to see who was following them. Though she supposes they're probably waiting for a what, not a who.
She continues to follow them from the rooftop after they leave the alley and watches as they enter an apartment. Natasha can't follow them into the building so she watches from the adjacent building's roof for them to emerge on the floor of Jackson's mother's place. She climbs down from the roof and up the fire escape of Jackson's building to his apartment. She watches as the two settle down in the living room and begin arguing again. Natasha takes this opportunity to gently lift up the window of one of the rooms and climb through. It looks like she walked into Jackson's room, if the bronze armor strewn across the floor was any indication of the owner. She crept around quickly and bugged the room before leaving the way she came.
Percy
"You knock."
"No, you do it, it's your house. Hang on, don't you have a key?"
Percy looked sheepish.
"You lost it, didn't you."
"Shut up. Now knock!"
"Dude, you knock!"
All of a sudden, the door opened and a stern woman appeared in the doorway.
"Perseus Jackson." She raised an eyebrow.
Percy managed to drag his eyes up from the floor and look at his mother.
"Yes mother dearest?"
"No Iris Messages, no calls, no visits and no signs that you're alright for nearly two weeks. Two weeks!"
"I forgot?"
"You forgot. I thought you had been kidnapped again! Or died! I was going to march over to Camp Half-Blood and demand what had happened! You are so lucky that Chiron keeps an eye on you. If he hadn't called me, I would have dragged you back by the ear!"
There was only one thing that could save Percy now and the both of them knew it.
"Hello Mrs. Jackson."
Sally glanced over and the stern expression of motherly concern vanished. She smiled warmly. "Hello Jason, why don't you come in, I've just baked some cookies." She beckoned him inside. As Percy moved to follow, his mother stopped him.
Percy gulped and his mother looked at him sternly once more, before her expression softened and she gave him a hug. "Don't scare me like that, okay?"
"Okay." Percy mumbled into his mother's hair. He was much taller than her now. She let him through and closed the door.
Percy and Jason settled at the table as his mom brought over cookies.
"I've got to go visit a publisher for one of my books now, you two behave alright?"
They replied simultaneously.
"Yes mom."
"Yes Mrs. Jackson."
Sally smiled again at Jason, "Call me Sally, dear, Mrs. Jackson makes me feel far too old."
Jason grinned sheepishly, having been told the same thing every time he visited.
The two of them looked at each other intensely when they heard the door shut.
"Finding Nemo – "
" – Doctor Who Marathon"
"Aw come on man! We always watch Finding Nemo!"
"Because who doesn't like Finding Nemo!"
Percy watched as Jason sighed.
"Coin toss? Heads for Finding Nemo and Tails for Doctor Who?"
Percy was about to call Jason stupid when he remembered it wasn't his friends fault that he'd had so many head injuries.
"Heads for Doctor Who and Tails for Finding Nemo." Percy said
Jason looked confused. "Why does it matter?"
Percy sighed at his friend's obliviousness. "Because fish have tails?"
Jason facepalmed.
"Percy?"
"Yes, Jason?"
"Shut up."
Jason
Obviously it was tails and Jason was stuck watching Finding Nemo for the umpteenth time. It was when he was staring out the window in boredom as Percy stared raptly at the screen that he noticed a figure creeping up the fire escape. He shook Percy's shoulder hard.
"Ow, stop it."
"Percy, look, do you see that?"
"Duh, it's right in front of me?"
"What? No, not the movie stupid, the fire escape. There's someone there."
"Huh, oh yeah!"
"Shh, do you hear that? They've opened a window. Let's go see what they're doing."
"No, I bet they're the ones who've been following us. W.W.A.D.?"
"What?"
"What?"
Jason looked at Percy and raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, W.W.A.D.: What Would Annabeth Do?"
Jason had to admit, that was a good rule to live by.
Percy looked thoughtful. Jason watched as Percy turned up the volume of the T.V. and crept into the bathroom, grabbed a mirror, and headed down the corridor. Jason carefully followed. They went back to the lounge and ignored the T.V. waiting for the intruder to make a sound. When they heard a creak, they carefully followed it to Percy's room. Then, Percy angled the mirror so they could see inside without alerting the intruder. They watched as a red-headed woman dressed like she was going for a stroll in the park walked around, looking like she was inspecting random areas of the room. Then she quietly left back out the window, the only audible sound being the window.
Percy shot an alarmed look at Jason.
"Dude, what the Hades?"
