On a Sea of Blood

In eerie, deafening silence the sheer endless planes of the sea of grass lay in front of him. It was totally windless, not even the slightest breeze was blowing that could have shaken the grass.

Slowly, he lifted a paw and watched the stream of blood flowing from it, painting the ground around him in red. Defiantly, he stomped it back down and strengthened his stance. There was nowhere to hide, he was alone, but still he wouldn't back away… even tough he didn't knew from what even.

Tremendous thunder shattered the silence and his gaze shot upward. It was as if the sky above was cracked open. Raging flames consumed the few visible stars and covered the clouds in a red an orange light, while lightnings flashed through them. And then there was a horrible scream.

His grandmother had told him stories of this. Of a creature, devouring all those who were foolish enough to wandered alone into the wastelands and died there. He came. He came to get him. There would be no escape, do he braced himself to encounter the beast.

Then the creature tore through the clouds. The ginormous wings of the vulture scattered the flames as they cut through them, every beat of them like a roar of thunder and his scream the most terrible sound Kani had ever heard. The grass that had been completely still just moments ago was ripped apart by the force of monstrous wings as the beast descended on the lion. All the blood, that had been pouring from him was whirled up and soaked his fur. The stench of thousands of dead bodies came from the vulture's throat and nearly hit him like a physical attack, but other than expected, the gigantic claws of the beast didn't grab Kani and it only rushed over him lifting itself up into the red shy again.

Kani turned around to see where the nightmarish creature was heading… and stared right into the face of a lion. He stood eye to eye with no one other than himself, yet the other one was incredibly strange to him. Without hesitation he pounced and buried his teeth in the lion's neck and crushed his windpipe. Without any resistance the other one fell to the ground and rattling took his last breaths while Kani watched himself dying while quivering in panic. The blood that was still running from his paw was nearly reaching over his feet by now, even though he knew that shouldn't be possible. Gasping, he stared at his own corps. Then, finally, he opened his eyes…

He lay on a bed of stomped down grass that had been messed up by his twitching limbs. The sky above was dark, but the stars were easy to spot between the few clouds that could be seen. Slowly, his heartbeat slowed down to a normal rate. He had been dreaming… but deep inside his heart, he was sure, it had been more than just that…

AN: Already by the first I was listening to "On a Sea of Blood" by Amon Amarth and having a closer look at the lyrics it seemed to me, it was describing someone's nightmare. Fittingly here we have Kani once again suffering one such, let's call it, "prophetic" dream.

Just as with the last chapters this one is based on the name giving song.

I hope, you liked it.
