Author's Note: Every other chapter will be from either Caroline or Wally's POV, since that's how the original books sort of did it. This one is from Caroline's POV.
My sisters and I found out about Mrs. Hatford contacting our Aunt a day after they spoke on the phone. She explained everything and said that Mrs. Hatford wanted to have a reunion this summer.
"What do you think?" She asked as we sat at the table for breakfast on the Saturday after they talked. I stared into my glass of orange juice silently. Eddie spoke up first.
"When would we go? I want to do some training this summer, too, before I leave for school."
"June," Aunt Bea replied.
Beth looked from Eddie to Aunt Bea and then at me.
"I'd like to visit the Hatfords. We haven't seen them in six years and it would be interesting to see what they're all doing now, to see how they've changed," she said.
They all turned to look at me. I don't know if they were afraid it would bring back memories that would make me upset or if they just thought that I may not want to see the Hatfords, or both.
"Sure, I'd like to visit them," I replied.
Aunt Bea discussed some of the details and then worked out the rest with Mrs. Hatford on the phone that weekend. She confirmed that we would be visiting them and she booked the rooms.
After school that Monday, I grabbed my phone and did a search for Wallace Hatford. I found his Instagram, but most of the pictures were of the Bensons. I saw that Bill Benson still had those powerfully blue eyes and dark blond hair; he was average height and looked to be in decent shape. Danny looked similar, but was on the shorter side and a little bigger around the middle than Bill.
I scrolled through the pictures silently when I heard a tapping on my door.
"Can I come in?" It was Beth.
"Sure," I called. She came into the room and sat on my bed.
"What's that?" She asked.
"Instagram, I looked up Wally and found his account. It's mostly pictures of the Bensons and his brothers," I replied, scrolling through to a picture of Peter making a funny face.
"Wow! Look at Peter, all grown up!" Beth said, scooting closer to look at the pictures too.
"Yeah, here's one of Jake and Josh," I said, moving to the next one.
Jake was smirking, wearing a baseball uniform shirt and jeans and Josh was smiling, but with no sports uniform on. They still looked very similar, except that Josh's hair was longer than Jake's and Josh wore glasses, while Jake didn't.
Beth smiled. "Josh is cute."
I swiped to the next picture, which was Josh and another girl. I pointed at the caption so Beth could see. It clearly labelled Josh and this girl as dating.
"Thinking he's cute doesn't mean I want to go out with him," Beth said.
I stared at the picture of Josh's girlfriend. She had wavy light brown hair and dark eyes; she looked familiar, but I couldn't remember her name. I didn't check to see if she was tagged in the photo.
"I'm not surprised he has a girlfriend, he was the nicest twin," I said and Beth grinned.
"So no pictures of Wally yet?"
"Nopeā¦" I swiped through a bunch more, all of the Bensons and Wally's other brothers together, playing sports of various types, standing around or being ridiculous and making faces. There was another knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in!" I called. Eddie entered and sat next to us.
"Just what I was thinking," she said with a laugh. I scrolled back through some of the images for her to study.
"Stop on Jake and Josh, I'm curious," Eddie said. So I found one of them and stopped. She leaned forward to study the pictures curiously.
"What do you think?" Beth asked and Eddie curled an eyebrow at her.
"About what? Jake?"
Beth nodded. Eddie shrugged.
"He's alright to look at, I guess. Tony Benson is cute, though. Not that it matters, it's not like we're staying long. This is Wally's Instagram?" Eddie asked and I nodded.
"We haven't seen Wally yet because he doesn't take selfies," Beth said.
"That's not that surprising, though, based on what I remember about him," I said.
Then, finally, there was a picture of Wally. It wasn't posted to his account, but to Bill Benson's account and tagged with Wally's username. It looked as if Bill had caught Wally off guard, because he was shirtless and half turned towards the camera with a mildly annoyed look on his face. His dark hair was tousled and thick and his eyes were intense.
"Okay, Wally Hatford, I did not expect that. Puberty was nice to him," Eddie said with a slight grin in my direction.
I felt heat rise in my cheeks as I stared at the photo. Wally was tall, with broad shoulders. He was in shape and muscular and wearing what looked like football uniform pants.
"Do you think we should contact them before we visit?" Beth asked.
I scrolled through some of the other photos. There were a couple more of Wally that were clearer and closer. His eyes were blue, but with those same flecks of brown and gold near the pupils that I remembered.
"I might look up the Bensons and message Tony and Steve, just to say hello. Maybe Jake, too, who knows. We'll see them when we get there, I'm not in any rush," Eddie replied.
She got up.
"I have work to do anyway."
She left the room, leaving Beth and I sitting there.
"Are you going to message Wally?" Beth asked.
"I don't know. I want to, but I don't know what to say to him. Are you going to message Josh or any of the Bensons?"
Beth nodded slowly.
"I think just Josh, maybe Tony and Steve. I might wait to see if they send me anything first. I don't know. Wouldn't want to make Josh's girlfriend angry."
She got up.
"I'll probably just lurk," she said as she left the room.
I spent the night debating with myself over whether or not I should send Wally a message. The next day I decided to send one after school. It took me at least ten minutes to figure out what to write because I didn't even know where to begin. I kept it short and simple and sent it before I could change my mind. It read: "Hey Wally, it's Caroline. I know it's been a while since we spoke to each other. My aunt said we would be coming to see you in June. How are all of you? What are you up to now?"
I went to rehearsal after sending the message. After blocking several scenes, we took a break and I checked my phone to find that I already had a response from Wally. I ducked into the dressing room and checked the message.
It read: "Hey Caroline! My mom told us about everything that happened. I'm sorry about your parents and for not keeping in touch. We're all pretty good, keeping busy with sports and stuff. How have you been lately?"
I had no idea what to say. What had his mom said to them about what happened with our parents? Had he looked it up online? I knew that there was plenty of information out there, just because my dad was well-known in that part of Ohio and his death made the news. Would I be angry if he had?
I hoped, at least a little, that Wally wouldn't go digging too hard, but that didn't mean Jake or one of the Bensons wouldn't and then show him.
I hid in the bathroom to compose a response.
"Busy with plays and choir at school. I'm at rehearsal right now, we're doing a musical called Bye Bye Birdie. I'm one of the main characters, her name is Kim McAfee. We're performing it for a competition. What's going on in Buckman?"
During the rest of rehearsal, my mind was focused on Wally's response. We rehearsed two of the musical numbers, blocked out more of the scenes, and went over lines repeatedly before Mrs. Young, our theater director, called it quits and we went home.
