Thank you for coming back to read chapter three!
I need to thank my usual ones… Sohypothetically, Notanislander, and Cole. Without them, this would not be that good. Lol, I promise.
Chelle- thank you for answering my mechanic questions! Even when the mechanic the mister knows couldn't or wouldn't….
The 2011 Grand Jeep Cherokee is what shows up when you google the worst vehicle to work on. I didn't know this, but the engine would just stop at around 100,000 miles. Which if you drive the vehicle every day, would suck. That's what's wrong with this Jeep.
The next morning finds Rey in the garage doing paperwork. She only bought the house about six months ago and was overjoyed when she saw that the three-bay garage was set up to work on cars.
She cried when the seventy-year-old owner said that he was leaving the lift for her. He was moving to Florida to be with his grandkids and didn't need it anymore.
"Rey's Garage," she answers her cell.
"Hey, Rey, it's Han. I just picked up a tow. Are you ready for it?"
She glances at her little shop. "Yeah, what is it and what's wrong?"
"It's actually my son's car. He was headed out to go to the airport-"
"Where's he going?"
"Oh, work. He's a pilot. But he asked if I could take it to a good mechanic so I called you."
"Well, thank you," she answers with a smile. Han Solo may be retired, but that didn't stop him from buying a towing business to stay busy. His wife wasn't that happy when he bought the business, but she's still working, so he thought it was only fair that he have a new side hustle.
"See you soon." He hangs up and Rey realizes that he didn't tell her what he was bringing her.
"Oh well," she says to her neighbor's yellow lab, B.B. who comes over everyday to hang out in the garage with her while her owner, Poe is at work. "He never remembers to tell me what he's bringing me." The Lab wags her tail at Rey. "I know, I know. Do you want a cookie?"
The phone rings again and B.B. gives her the sad puppy-dog-eyes. "Hang on, let me get the phone," she says smiling at the pouting dog. "Rey's Garage."
"Hey! Are you busy?" Rose asks.
"I almost cancelled today, but Mrs. Jocasta is bringing in her car and if I'm not here when she does, well, she flips even when I tell her to just leave it in the parking lot. Did you make it to work?"
After dropping her off, Rose had gone home with Hux. Which was probably a good thing since Rey spent some quality time with her favorite vibrator. She can't remember if she went to sleep first, or the thing died. She still hasn't come home.
"I did. Hux and I are going to Twisted again tonight. Do you want to go?"
Her stomach flips, and she can't keep the silly grin off her face. Before she thinks, she asks, "Will Kylo be there?"
"No, he called Hux and said he was called into work." Rey can hear someone talking to Rose as she feeds B.B. a treat. "I've got to go-"
"Ok, bye." Rey turns off her cell as Han pulls in. "Crap," she whispers when she sees the Jeep on the back of the rollback. "Why in the world did you let your son buy that?"
He parks the bright blue truck in front of her doors. "Hey Rey!" He calls when he sees her through the garage door.
"Let me guess? Engine failure?"
Han goes ahead and climbs down. "He bought it and never asked for my opinion."
"Will it even turn over?"
"The Kid said that the lights came on, like normal, but then nothing. He was in a hurry, and called to ask me-" his phone rings, and she motions for him to go ahead and take it.
He steps away and she looks around to see where he could possibly park it. Her parking lot is sort of full but she supposes...
"I got another call," Han says as he hangs up. "What do you want me to do with this?"
"Well," she pauses. It's Friday, and while most of her work is done for the week, she has some oil changes and tune ups coming in today and tomorrow. "Do you think it needs a new engine?"
"Probably."
"Put it over there," she says as she points at the side of the parking lot. She looks at her watch. "I have several coming in today, but I'll look at it when I get a chance. It will probably be this evening."
"That's fine. The Kid won't be back until Monday night. The keys are in it," Han says as he climbs back into the driver's seat. "I'll text you his number. He can't talk in the air, but he does text."
She watches him move the truck, and tries to remember if Han has ever mentioned his son before. His wife, yes. She's a former senator, who even though she promised to retire, still volunteers and promotes her own charities which is what led Han to buy the roll back.
But what about his son? Why doesn't he ever talk about him?
"Mrs. Jocasta, I promise it will be ok."
"Are you sure, dear? But I can hear it still making that noise."
Rey has to bite her lip to keep from saying anything but instead goes back around to the front of the car. "Pop your hood," she says to the eighty-nine-year-old. She waits for the familiar click and then lifts the hood. She's still for a couple of minutes. "I don't hear what she hears," she whispers. She just finished changing her oil, and everything looks fine.
She gently lowers the hood and lets it drop in place. Instead of trying to tell her that it's nothing, she says, "I fixed it."
Mrs. Jocasta smiles. "You did! I don't hear it anymore! Thank you dear. I'll see you next month."
"Next month?" Rey asks as she pulls away. "I hope I wrote down what she wants me to do. Because I do not remember why she's coming in." She was her last scheduled client of the day and her eyes go to the maroon jeep sitting beside her garage. "Well, let's see what's wrong with you."
She walks over and opens the door. She slides in, and like she does every time she gets in a new vehicle, she looks around. The first thing she notices is the smell. Her eyes drift shut, and she inhales. She doesn't realize the little smile that curves her lips as she breathes in. "That's nice," she murmurs. Then it's like something triggers in her brain, because she realizes it's something she's smelled before.
She adjusts the seat. "He must be really tall," she mutters as she continues talking to herself. When she can reach the gas pedal, she tries to turn the key.
Nothing.
She pops the hood and walks around. The acrid smell of burnt oil makes her cough even before she gets the hood up. "Yeah," she says as she lifts it up. "That engine is bad."
Just as she reaches for her phone, it rings, surprising her. "Rey's Garage."
"Hey, I'm finally able to talk!" Rose exclaims.
"That was a long day."
"Yes, it was. I'm ready for tonight. Are you coming?"
It's six o'clock on Friday, and after seven oil changes, five of them having something else wrong with them, she's tired. "No, I'm ordering pizza and Netflixing and chilling by myself."
"That's sad."
"No, I'm fine, Rose. Besides if I don't go, then you and Hux can do whatever it is you two do and not have to worry about what I'm up to."
"That's true. You'll be alright?"
"Rose, go. I'll be fine."
"Bye," Rose says.
"Bye," echoes Rey. She hangs up and checks her texts.
-The kid is waiting to hear from you. His number is 828-777-5673
She looks at the time stamp and is surprised that she just got the text. Not sure what to do, she texts him back instead of calling.
-This is Rey from Rey's Garage. Your father brought me your Jeep earlier today.
-Hey. What do you think? How bad is it?
-Have you noticed it leaking anything before now? Some of the hoses are loose.
-Honestly, I've been gone for a month and this is the first time I was going to drive it.
-So, no weird smoke or smells?
-No idea.
-It's still not starting, and the burnt oil smell, I think there's been some serious damage.
Instead of texting, her phone rings with his number. "Hello."
"Rey? I figured you were a guy," the deep voice says on the other end.
She laughs, "I get that a lot. I like engines."
"Well, my dad brings you all his stuff, so you must be good."
"Well I do see him several times a week. Thank you," she answers, his deep baritone making parts of her quiver. "So, your engine- what do you want to do with it?"
"If it was yours-"
"I would get a new car?"
"That bad?"
"It is. Do you want me to start taking it apart and see if I can rebuild it? Or order a new one?"
She hears something beep on his end and he says, "I've got to go."
"Ok, bye." The phone clicks and she holds the phone away to see the screen. She takes a moment to add his number to her contacts, and that's when she realizes that she doesn't know his name. She types in Han Solo's son.
Then she calls the pizza place, shuts the hood of the Jeep and walks into the garage. Poe must have come home because she doesn't see B.B. anywhere. She turns off the lights, shuts the garage doors, and goes into her little house.
"One of these days, I'm going to be able to sleep in on Saturdays," her exhale is loud, even to herself in the empty garage. "But not today. At least I get to sleep tomorrow-"
"There you go again, talking to yourself," Poe teases her as he comes around the corner. B.B. follows closely to get a scratch and a morning cookie.
"Well, I have to talk to myself because no one else will." Poe gives her a look that she knows by now is a heavy mix of pity and disapproval. "What are you two up today?"
"We were hoping you could come to the park with us. When's the last time you took a Saturday off?"
She looks down at the desk calendar. "I've never taken a Saturday off. You know that."
"You work too hard," he says.
"Are you worried about me?" she asks, meeting his eyes. "Why are you worried about me?"
"Rey, I know what you're doing."
"I'm trying to run a business."
"You just opened a couple of months ago. You're not even making enough to hire somebody. Yet you make room from everyone that calls." He reaches across the counter for her. She isn't sure what to do, so she lets him take her hand. His finger rubs the top of her hand and for some reason, she can't stop watching him move.
She knows she should be enjoying this, but all she can think about is how she felt when Kylo was touching her the other night at Twisted.
How he left her breathless.
How he left her wanting.
How he left her needing more…
Not this icky feeling that leaves her wanting to go take a shower.
Her phone rings and she pulls her hand from Poe's and grabs her cell. "Rey's Garage."
"I'm surprised you're open today," the deep baritone that she is fairly certain she dreamed about last night says.
"Yes, no rest for the weary." Poe is mouthing something to her, and she says to Mr. Solo, "Hang on, my friend is trying to say something." She hears a chuckle then says to Poe, "are you going?"
"Yeah, I am." Poe looks sad, but before she can mention it, he's got B.B. and is walking out of her garage.
"Well, that was weird," she says.
"What happened?" he asks.
"You scared me!"
"Did you forget about me?"
"No," she says wishing that Poe didn't distract her like he just did. "Anyway, you never did tell me your name."
"I didn't?"
"Well I know your last name, it's Solo."
"Yes, and you're Rey."
"That's my name. Aren't you flying?"
"I actually just landed in London."
"That must be fun getting to fly everywhere?"
"Sometimes I'd rather be home," he says.
"There's no place like home."
"What?"
"Oh, you know, what Dorothy says in Wizard of Oz. Anyway, your Jeep?"
"How long have you owned your garage?"
"Oh. A couple of months now. I did work at the Chevy dealership in Asheville. What? Do you think I don't know how to work on vehicles?"
"No, nothing like that. I guess it's just nice to talk to someone from home."
"I understand that. How long have you been flying?"
"I first joined the Marines, even though Mother didn't want me to."
"Did she want you to go to college?"
"Yes. She wanted me to be a lawyer or go into politics like she did. I wanted to fly."
"Well, I'm glad that you're living the dream." They laugh together and she wonders what he looks like. "How long were you a Marine?"
"Not as long as I wanted to be. I cracked my sternum-"
"Ow!" She interrupts, rubbing her chest. "I bet that hurt."
"It did. They discharged me on medical discharge. As soon as I was better, I went to flight school."
"I would like to fly," she says wistfully. "I've never been more than two hours away from here."
"Really?" He answers. "That's a little-"
"Pathetic?"
"Sad." He pauses for a moment and she's not sure what to say when he continues, "One day, I'll take you anywhere you want to go."
"But, you don't know me."
"Yeah I do. You're a small-town girl who is doing everything she can to make it, when deep down she's waiting for her Prince Charming to come and sweep her off her feet."
"Oh ok." She bursts out laughing, and her heart does a little flip when he joins her. "Well then where is this Prince Charming?"
"Who knows because I don't." When he stops chuckling, he adds, "Well Rey, I've been awake for over twenty-four hours and have to be back at the airport in nine."
"Go to sleep."
"I plan on it," he pauses, and she wonders if he went to sleep. Then he whispers, "You're a surprise. Good night, Rey."
"Good morning- wait!" the phone clicks in her ear. "Damn it! You didn't tell me your name!"
He isn't sure who he just talked to, but he knows that he can't wait to call her back after he's had a long nap.
"Rey!"
"What?"
"I need more butter."
"More?" She opens the refrigerator. "I'm not sure if I have anymore." She moves some stuff around and finds another stick. Since Rey bought her little house, everyone always ends up at her house on Sundays.
Finn, her foster brother that she kept in touch with over the years, is at the grill that he bought her as a housewarming present cooking supper. Hux and Poe, from the looks of it are actually helping. Rose is in the kitchen helping Rey do the prep work.
And of course, B.B. is in the sun, dreaming of cookies.
Rey takes the butter out to Finn and hears Rose ask, "Really, Finn. You should go with us one night. You too, Poe."
"Go where," Rey asks. Finn does his I'm-really-uncomfortable-with-everything-around-me-cough where he's looking at her to save him and Poe, well she hasn't known him as long as the others, but he looks like he's in deep thought.
"Twisted. Since the membership drive was so popular, they are going to be adding classes and special events every week." And just as Rey is ready to ask, Rose answers for her, "And no, Kylo won't be there this week-"
"Extra work stuff," Hux finishes for her.
"Who's Kylo?" Finn asks.
"He does like a rope bondage show." Rey feels her face turning as red as Hux's hair. "Rey really liked it when we took her last week. She even got to meet him."
"Rose!" She hisses. Hux laughs, Poe looks like someone kicked B.B., and Finn looks like he has a million questions.
"You met him?" Finn asks.
"We danced-"
"Then he walked her out to the truck." Rose says with a smirk.
"Kriff!" Rey swears just as her phone that's still in the kitchen starts ringing. Even though her best friend is being annoying, she has to smile when she sees the caller id. "Hello."
"Rey." Mr. Solo grumbles. "Am I calling at a bad time? Are you open today?"
"Well, no I'm not. Actually, several of my friends are over and we are grilling. But your dad has brought me cars on Sundays before. Are you in the air?"
"Just woke up. It's raining in London, imagine that, and of course everything has been delayed."
"Does that mean that I won't be seeing you tomorrow?" She isn't sure why, but disappointment washes over her.
"No, Sweetheart," he rumbles and it sends a warm quiver through her. "It will be Tuesday."
"Well that's alright. If you want to, let me know a time when you'll be here so I won't be busy."
"I can do that."
"Thanks for letting me know, Mr. Solo."
"Mr. Solo?" He chuckles. "Did Dad not tell you my name?"
"No, he didn't. He called you The Kid."
"Sounds about right." He's quiet for a moment and she wonders what he's thinking when softly, he says, "Ben. My name is Ben Solo."
"Hello, Ben," she replies. She isn't sure about him, and she is probably wrong, but she wants to get to know him. After all he promised her a trip to wherever she wants to go, after all.
