The Bullhead set down roughly a kilometre from the White Fang camp behind a rather sizeable hill. Liam hopped off the craft and managed to key his radio to the frequency the pilot showed him.
"I'll radio when I'm ready for pick up," Liam said to the pilot as he rechecked his rifle.
"Copy that," The pilot radioed back as the Bullhead began to take off again. With that, Liam started the kilometre-long trek.
As Liam got closer to the camp, he found traps. Mostly tripwires with random metal knickknacks to alert the terrorists of anyone coming. He cautiously stepped over the tripwire in front of him while looking for other traps. He avoided a stray stick in his path as he quietly walked through the underbrush. He carefully moved branched out of the way as he went, making sure they didn't brush against him or loudly whip back into place. As he got closer, he could hear noises further into the brush.
He quietly stalked through the trees as meticulously as he could. He came upon a clearing that had tents before long, tarps cover what looked like boxes and patrolling terrorists. Liam could hear the crackling fires and the murmurs of conversations. The fires were relatively small, but they still gave off enough smoke. The smoke barely rose above the treetops. But then he heard one of the terrorists.
"I thought I heard something. I'm going to check it out."
Liam did his best to flatten himself against the tree he was behind. He listened to the soft footfalls as the terrorist walked closer to where he hid. Liam looked down to see a tiny twig near his feet. Silently, he bent down and picked it up. While it wouldn't be big enough to make a noise if Liam threw it against a tree, the snap would be just loud enough. He took it delicately between his index fingers and thumbs and wrenched both ends downward.
It gave an audible pop as the dryness of the twig made it just a little louder. While it wouldn't have been heard at the other side of the camp, the man approaching Liam definitely heard it. The terrorist muttered under his breath as he readied himself. Liam tightened his grip on his rifle.
Just as the terrorist was about round the tree, Liam suddenly appeared, smashing the rifle's stock into the nose of the terrorist. The terrorist landed on his ass with a hand on his face. Before he could make any more noise, Liam dragged him behind the tree. Being sure to cover his mouth. With one solid punch to the side of the jaw, the terrorist was out cold. Without any more unnecessary noise, Liam stepped into the clearing with his rifle raised.
Immediately he was met with two terrorists holding what looked like rifles, and another three carried swords. Liam made a single demand, "Surrender. And you'll be treated fairly."
"We'll never surrender to the likes of you, Human!" one of the terrorists spit venomously at Liam. One of the three terrorists that held swords charged Liam. He let out a yell with the sword over his head, ready to strike.
"Tch," Liam let out in annoyance as he sidestepped the charging man. He brought the stock of his rifle down on the back man's head as he stumbled past. Suddenly the two terrorists holding rifles started firing at him. Several shots were missed and landed somewhere in the forest behind Liam. He turned to face the terrorists as a few bullets impacted his armour. The bullets left minor scratches but no other visible damage.
Several more bullets continued to miss and hit Liam in his chest and shoulders. He raised his rifle and returned fire. His projectiles being far more impactful and meaningful. Two shots from the railgun carbine found themselves piercing the masks of the two terrorists that held the rifles. They over penetrated and went back through the camp into the forest on the other side. The two terrorists collapsed on the spot.
"I will not ask again. Surrender," Liam shouted forcefully at the remaining two. The two stared at the lifeless corpses of their allies that lay on the ground. Rather large holes where their faces used to be. One turned to Liam with his teeth bared. He was seething with rage. He charged with an animalistic growl coming from his throat.
As he got close, He started to swing his sword. Liam sidestepped the first strike. The terrorist continued his assault by bringing his sword up and attempted to strike at Liam's side. He took another step back, narrowly avoiding the blade. The terrorist raised his sword over his head with both hands; he brought the sword down with all his might.
Liam once again avoided the blade, but this time the tip became embedded in the ground. Without a second thought, Liam kicked the sword in the middle. The blade snapped in half as the terrorist attempted to wrestle it free. The terrorist stumbled backward and fell back, dazed suddenly. He brought the hilt up to inspect his weapon. His eyes widened in shock at the now broken blade.
Liam stood over him, placed a boot on his chest and aimed his rifle down at him, "it's over."
But the yell from Liam's side indicated otherwise. The last sword wielder came charging. He sighed as he turned to face the charging opponent. Liam stood his ground as the terrorist got closer. The sword came down towards Liam's shoulder. But he raised his arm and let the sword strike slide down his vambrace.
With the terrorist now off-balance, a swift, powerful punch to the side of the man's head knocked him out cold. Liam turned to the last conscious man on the ground.
"Whatever you were doing ends here," Liam said as he kicked the man's head and knocked him out. With the terrorist threat finally neutralized, Liam began searching the camp. He found lengths of rope that he then began to tie up the terrorists, making it impossible for them to escape when they woke up.
He went back to the tree he left the first terrorist he encountered. But when Liam rounded the tree, the terrorist was gone. He cursed under his breath as he turned back to the camp. Liam made his way over to the tarps that covered something. He gripped the edge of the tarp. As he was about to pull it off, he heard something muffled coming from underneath it.
He pulled the tarp off as fast as he could. He found cages underneath, along with civilians in them. Some looked unscathed, while others looked slightly emaciated. While they didn't look deathly thin, they still looked more slender than they should have been. Liam's blood boiled as he opened a coom link with the pilot that brought him.
"I'm done here. Bring medevac. There are prisoners," Liam said coldly. He didn't register the pilot's response as he set to work to open the cages.
Several minutes later, all the cages were opened, with the Human and Faunus prisoners huddled together outside. They stared at Liam warily as he double-checked everything. Once he was sure there were no more surprises, he walked over to the group of liberated prisoners. He knelt down before them and looked at them.
"Don't worry, everyone. A Bullhead with medics are on their way here as we speak. The White Fang are dealt with. There's nothing to hurt you here," Liam said to the group, trying to reassure them.
"And how can we trust you?" A man called from the middle of the group.
"I work with the city of Vale. They're the ones that sent me out here," Liam responded as he set his rifle carefully on the ground. He undid the chin strap of his helmet and took it off. He looked out over the group and watched their reactions. Several were visibly surprised by the significant scars on his face.
"What happened to your face?" A young Faunus girl asked. She looked to be younger than ten. She wore a pale blue dress with flowers and scuffed black leather shoes. She had a small set of doe ears on top of her head with light brown hair and blue eyes. She was looking at Liam with a curious but cautious look.
"I got into this fight with these bad guys. They gave me this to remember them by. But they didn't get away unpunished," Liam explained to the best of his ability to simplify it for the child while giving the best smile he could to her. The child's mother wrapped her in a hug from behind and gave Liam a look. He couldn't decipher the look he got as he heard the engines of a Bullhead fast approaching.
He picked up his rifle with his helmet that dangled from his hand. He looked up and watched the Bullhead descend into the clearing. Its landing gear deployed as it set down gently. The side door opened, and several medical personnel jumped out. They rushed over to the group of innocents and began checking on them. Liam walked over to the three tied-up White Fang members.
He observed them as they struggled with their bonds. He glared at them as one spit at him. The spit hit his chest plate, but before long, he stood up as he heard a second Bullhead. He wiped off his chest plate with his hand as he approached the second landing Bullhead. The side door opened, and out stepped a couple Vale police officers. Liam motioned to the three terrorists, and the officers simply nodded.
Once everyone was thoroughly checked and examined, the civilians began to enter the first Bullhead that arrived. Liam watched as almost everyone was on board the Bullhead. One of the medics walked up to him, "Aside from some malnutrition and dehydration, everyone seems to be okay. Some of the worse off people will probably have to make a stay at the hospital before they're good to go. The psychological impact is a different matter, however."
"Well, at least we got here before it got any worse," Liam commented. The medic only nodded as he left for the Bullhead. But before absolutely everyone was loaded onto the Bullhead, the mother and her daughter walked up to Liam.
"I just wanted to thank you. There's no telling what they would have done to us or where they would have taken us," The mother thanked Liam with her daughter in her arms.
"It's no problem, Ma'am. This is one of the reasons I joined up with GDI. To stop scum like this White Fang."
"GDI?" The woman questioned.
"Sorry, forget I mentioned it," Liam responded, quickly backtracking from his slip-up.
"Thank you," the young girl said with a smile on her face.
"You are most certainly welcome, young lady," Liam said as he smiled back.
"I think it's time for us to go," the mother said as she started towards the Bullhead.
"Goodbye," Liam called after them before he turned walked towards the police Bullhead.
Liam stepped off the Bullhead at Beacon Academy. Professor Ozpin and Goodwitch greeted him at the landing pad. Liam nodded as the Bullhead behind lifted off and went back to the city. Liam followed the Headmaster and Goodwitch back through the grounds of Beacon, towards Ozpin's office.
Liam stood in Ozpin's office with his helmet tucked into his side. The council of Vale sat on the screen in front of him. Ozpin sat behind the screen in his chair. One member of the council started, "Well done, Mr. Roberts. You exceeded our expectations. It is unfortunate one member managed to get away, and two ended up dead, but having three to question is quite a boon indeed."
"Just doing my job, Councillor," Liam responded.
"Yes, well, the White Fang having prisoners so close to Vale is troubling. We're doing everything we can to help those you rescued," the second councillor said in response.
"For now, we're keeping you out of the media. We don't need those vultures interfering with what you do," The third member of the council added on.
"Understood."
With that, the council bid farewell and the call ended. Liam still stood as Ozpin rose from his seat.
"Well, Mr. Roberts, it seems you've made a good impression on the council. Let's hope that is one of many successful missions in the future. You are free for the rest of the day."
Liam walked out of Ozpin tower holding his helmet by the chinstrap, his rifle slung over his shoulder. He walked down to the main boulevard of the grounds and returned to the building he was sleeping in. Liam walked down the hallway back to his room. Once he was inside, he set about taking off his armour. He leaned the rifle against the bed and set his helmet on his bed.
He undid the latches of his vambraces and set them on the bed. He pulled off his gloves and threw them beside the helmet. Next, he undid his pauldrons and then his rerebraces. As he started on his chest plate, he heard something come from his helmet. He pulled the latched torso armour over his head and set it down. He picked up the helmet and put it on. At first, all he heard was static, but then a clear voice came through.
"To any and all GDI personnel, this is Commander Hill, respond."
"Commander Hill, Lieutenant Roberts. Do you copy?" Liam hastily responded after he heard the radio.
"Roberts, where are you?"
"I'm in a city called Vale. Staying in the locals call Beacon Academy," Liam responded quickly.
"Activate your beacon. We'll come and get you," Hill said right before the radio went quiet. Liam removed his helmet and threw it on the bed again. Having only shed the armour on his upper body, he reached into a pouch on his hip and pulled the Scroll Ozpin had given him. He pulled it open and called Ozpin.
Liam stood by the landing pads with his leg armour and combat boots on. His helmet was attached to his belt by the chinstrap. He watched the skies as Ozpin walked up to his with Glynda close behind.
"What was it you wanted to talk to me about Mr. Roberts?"
Liam spotted an Ox transport being escorted by two Orcas and two Firehawks. Liam pointed to the five aircraft. Ozpin and Glynda looked to where he pointed and saw the crafts.
"I've never seen those types of aircraft in my life," Glynda muttered.
"That's because you would never have seen them before. GDI Ox transport, Orca scout and ground attack craft, and the Firehawk bomber and air superiority fighter," Liam said as he identified the craft.
"GDI?" Ozpin questioned and turned to Liam.
"Global Defense Initiative. International peacekeeping and antiterrorism. And I believe I just found my new commander," Liam explained and then commented as the Ox got closer and closer to the landing platform.
