The days blended together as they passed. Before Cody realized it, a week had already passed by. There was still tension between some campers, but to be completely honest… Cody didn't care; he spent most of his time playing video games with Noah. The two had quickly realized that they had more in common than they initially thought. Cody was able to make Noah laugh with some pretty bad jokes, and Noah was surprisingly able to slip in some book references. He wouldn't admit it out loud, but it made Cody happy; the two became close friends in such a short amount of time. Cody was honestly surprised they hadn't become good friends sooner.
The boys realized they needed to give their eyes a break from all those video games, so while Noah found a quiet corner to read in, Cody played frisbee with Trent, Geoff and DJ.
After a couple of games, Cody heard his stomach grumble.
"Hungry?" DJ laughed.
Cody nodded, "I didn't eat much this morning. I'll go get a snack!" and off he went to look for food. Chef Hatchet had told the campers that it was alright to enter his sacred space, the kitchen. The campers were wary when he started cooking dinner, but they were pleasantly surprised when the food was actually edible.
Looking through the cupboards, Cody laughed as he found a bag of BBQ chips. He made sure there was no hole in the bag this time and opened it. He savoured the taste; it wasn't every day he could actually enjoy the food at Camp Wawanakwa.
On his way back to the beach, he crossed paths with Noah, whose nose was in a book as he was walking back to the cabins.
"Hey Noah!" he greeted, "What are you reading?"
Noah didn't even look up from the book as he answered, "Something you'd find boring."
Cody furrowed his brow. "Why do you think that?" He said, grabbing another chip. He offered the bag to Noah, but he declined the offer.
Noah sighed and finally looked up from the book, "Cody, this is Philosophy," he said, "If I'm not mistaken, most people find Philosophy boring."
Cody shook his head. "It can't be that bad," he said. "Here, hold this." As he gave him the chips, he took the book, making sure not to lose Noah's page. He read the summary on the back.
Noah bit into his knuckle, trying not to laugh as Cody blinked, obviously not understanding a word that was written.
"So? What do you think?" Noah asked him with a smirk.
"It's…" Cody started. "It's not boring! I just don't…" he trailed off.
"Understand?" Noah asked.
"Exactly!"
Noah grabbed his book and gave Cody back the chips, "Philosophy is the different ways of thinking and understanding, you know?"
Cody nodded, then smiled. "Why didn't they just put that on the back?" he mumbled to himself but then perked up. "When you're done, could I maybe read it?"
It was Noah's turn to be confused. "You're kidding, right?"
Cody shook his head, "I want to give it a try!" He exclaimed, smiling, "and if I don't understand, I can ask you for help."
Noah looked down at his book, trying to hide the red creeping up his neck and onto his cheeks, ''Alright, I only have two chapters left. As soon as I'm done, I'll bring it to you."
"Oh, don't worry! Take your time, Noah!" Cody said with a smile. "See you later!" he said and went back to the beach.
Noah watched as Cody left, happily eating his chips. The boy's cuteness was going to be the death of him, he swears. He just shook his head and brought his attention back to his book.
And, in the blink of an eye, the whole day went by. The sun started setting, casting a beautiful orange and pink glow over the camp. Almost everyone was sitting next to the campfire, but Cody and Trent were talking near the boy's cabin. When they heard a branch crack in the woods, they looked up from their conversation, and suddenly, they saw Duncan pinning Gwen to a tree in the middle of a makeout session. Cody rolled his eyes. Did they have to do this in front of them? But obviously, Trent was bothered by the scene. He sighed sadly as he looked away.
Cody patted his shoulder reassuringly, "It's alright, buddy."
"I miss her, man. I was so jealous. They got along so well, and I didn't want her to leave me for him. I messed up big time, and now look," He gestured to the couple, "I can't help but feel sad…" Trent said.
Cody nodded, "I understand how you feel, but look at it this way; you guys are still friends. That's more than most people can say. She obviously still cares about you; when you and Duncan fought, she didn't tell you off. She just wanted her friend and her boyfriend to stop fighting."
Cody could see that his message was reaching Trent because his eyes widened in realization, and he smiled, "You're right, man."
"Of course, I'm right!" Cody said.
Trent patted Cody's back in appreciation, "Thanks for the talk. I really needed it."
"No worries, Trent. Talk to me anytime you need it, alright?"
Trent nodded and got up, stretching as he did. He bid goodnight, and with one last look at Gwen and Duncan, he walked back into the cabin.
Cody sighed happily; at least he was able to help someone feel better. He then saw Noah making his way towards the cabins and waved.
Noah replied with his own wave and eventually took a seat next to him. "It doesn't bother you?" he gestured to the couple making out in the woods.
Cody shook his head. "I moved on a while ago."
"Because of Sierra?" Noah asked.
Cody shook his head, "We're only friends," He then looked at Noah, a confused frown adorning his face. "What made you think I was with her?"
Noah chuckled, "Sorry, but we all know Sierra has feelings for you. I figured by now you might've started liking her back."
Cody sighed, "I know she still loves me, but I just don't see myself with her. The only reason I'd go out with her would be to make her happy.''
Noah nodded and smiled, "You're a good guy, Cody."
"Thanks… And besides, she's a good friend. I don't want to ruin that."
"It's understandable," Noah said.
Cody smiled. "I can't lose hope. I know I'll eventually find someone. I just have to be patient…"
"Yeah, and maybe you'll find that person sooner than you think."
Cody's eyes widened, and he looked at Noah, who yawned. "Anyways, I'm off to bed."
Noah got up and grabbed the bookmark out of his book, "Here, just as promised. Come find me if you have trouble understanding" Noah then wished him a goodnight and went inside.
Cody smiled, looking down at the book, "I guess I could start reading it." He made himself comfortable and opened the book to the first page.
A year ago, if you told Cody that he'd be reading a book on Philosophy, he'd laugh and tell you that you're crazy, but here he was, an hour later, still reading the book. It had gotten dark out, so his only source of light was the flashlight on his phone. He was so immersed in the book that he didn't hear Geoff coming out of the cabin.
"What are you doing?"
Cody jumped, not expecting someone to be there. "You scared the crap out of me, man." He put his hand on his heart, trying to calm it down, "Just reading."
Geoff laughed, making sure not to wake the others, "You've been spending way too much time with Noah, dude."
Cody rolled his eyes, "He's a nice guy," He turned the page after reading the last sentence.
Geoff shook his head. "It's pretty late. You should get some sleep."
'I'll go to bed after this chapter. I only have two pages left," Cody showed him the two pages.
"Alright, dude." He said and walked off in the direction of the outhouse.
When Cody finished the chapter, he let out a huge yawn and rubbed his sore eyes. He went back inside and got ready for bed.
Only half awake, Noah cracked an eye open and saw Cody gently place the book next to his laptop before digging into his bag for his PJs. He gently smiled and closed his eyes, letting the sounds of the wild outside and his campmates snoring lull him to sleep.
