More 12x2 "Mamma Mia" scenes. This one is extended to what happened between Mary and Castiel after Dean went off alone to be captured.
Teachable Moment: The Company
The Impala roared as it pulled up behind Castiel's stolen pick-up truck. Dean walked up beside his friend, his mother following closely behind.
"Where's all this warding you mentioned?" the Hunter asked.
"It's cloaked. It's very powerful." The Angel glanced over his shoulder. "You brought your mother?"
Mary seemed to bristle at Castiel's lack of proper greeting. "Hello, Castiel," she said to try and make a passive aggressive point. Then she looked at her son who she argued with practically the entire drive. "Yes, he did."
Dean tried to stay on mission. "You sure there's anyone inside?"
Castiel shrugged. "No. The agent said the lease was handled long distance, but someone warded the house."
"I'm gonna go have a closer look," Dean announced. Dean turned around before Mary had taken two steps. "Mom, I got this."
With her Mom Voice on, she replied, "You can keep me from driving, Dean. Not from hunting."
Dean looked at Cas over her shoulder. She saw the couple's wordless exchange, it reminded her of the one she had with John. There was a sigh behind her, probably an eye roll too.
Castiel's deep voice was somehow gentle as he stepped into Mary's peripheral vision. "I'm locked out by the warding. I could use the company."
Mary hadn't agreed to anything yet, but Dean already accepted the new scenario. "Thanks," he said, smiled, and walked toward the house. [1]
Mary rolled her eyes, and then turned to Angel she'd seen act in roll of friend, bruiser, partner, and confident to her son. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of him or his relationship with Dean. Actually, she wasn't entirely sure what to make of Angels, in general. They were strong, are somehow "blasted away" and "locked out" by written symbols, and have this strange, powerful, shiny knife they seem to materialize out of their forearm.
Castiel didn't seem off-put by the silence, but he attempted small talk anyway. Mary assumed he recognized such a social situation might call for it. "Have you listened to any contemporary music?" he asked.
Mary shook her head. "I hadn't even thought about music changing. Dean played music I knew in the car." She snorted. "He probably was trying to make me feel comfortable."
Castiel raised an eyebrow. "Not likely. Dean's denies value in any music generated after 1979." He reached into his truck and unplugged a small rectangular device that looked like a remote control with one round button. "But I have heard from a reliable source that he likes Taylor Swift. [2] Although he still tries to tease me about using Agent Swift as an alias."
"Who's Taylor Swift?"
As he leaned his back against the side of the truck, Castiel looked up to formulate the most concise description. "A young pop-country star that sings about heartbreak." He fiddled with the object in his hand, rotating his thumb clockwise and counter clockwise around the central button. "I enjoy her lyricism as well, but I want to play Beyoncé for you. She released a new album this year, and I am still discovering new depths to the poetry, melodies, and personal and cultural history of her music."
Mary pointed at the remote in his hands. "That plays music?"
Castiel nodded. "Sam put this together for me. He helps me put new songs on it once in a while. This song has a 1970's funk undertone, so it might be not as… novel to you in that manner." Castiel pressed the play button. Mary was pleasantly surprised how familiar and new the song was to her ears. The spoken word part was something she was not used to, but she couldn't tell if it was because she didn't like it or because it was new. Castiel picked another song out, the music wasn't as familiar, but she could grove to it.
They barely reached the minute mark on the next track when Castiel's body straightened and eyes rolled back. "Dean's in trouble."
"What?! How do you know?" Mary asked, wondering if Angels had x-ray vision.
"He's praying to me." Castiel paused as he concentrated on the details on the message.
Mary stepped back. Prayers are actually heard? Who had heard her prayers over the years? Who had ignored them?
Castiel dropped his face and stared intensely at Mary. "Sam's alive, but in rough shape. Outside a cellar door there is spellwork that transported Dean inside and facilitated his capture. He saw only one human woman inside. She apparently enjoys torture and tea. Dean suggests and upper story window approach, hopefully bypassing more traps at the usual entrances."
Mary nodded. She knew it was a time of action and not to inquire more about Angels. "Good thing I wore my dancing shoes." As she ran toward the farmhouse, Mary saw Castiel glance at her feet, puzzled. Mary smiled.
